DJ KOX TORTUGA

Covered him briefly on last week’s Sexxy Saturday Cumbia post too.

He is the host of Dubtronik Radio, former member of KOXMOZ and our good mate Juan Data did a more extensive post on him recently which you can read at his HARD DATA BLOG.

In the past couple of years, DJ Kox Tortuga has also started exploring cumbia and blending it into his trademark cosmic-dub sound (some of his unreleased cumbia remixes can be heard in Juan Data’s megamixes).

Recently he was featured in the Agrupación Mamanis remix-tribute album with a remix of the Cucumelo song.

Here’s a long DJ set of his where he mixes cumbia and dub, it’s over an hour long and it’s called Sonido En Motado.

Download Here

Also here’s a new cumbia track he sent to me last week, it’s a DEMO but grab it for free download:

VINTAGE CUMBIA

Some vintage Columbian Tropical Cumbia here, I think, not sure, no info on the tracks, no info on the guy who uploaded them, maybe one of you could shed some light on the music?

I’m sure it’s Colombian stuff from the 70’s?

One, a streamer only and the other a free download!

  1. “El Combo de las Estrellas” is a tropical music band with 30 years of trayectory, founded and managed by Humberto Muriel, located in Medellín, Colombia. Many musicians have past along this orchestra (as Jairo Paternina). Their first hit was “Te lo juro yo” in 1977.

they recorded songs from a variety of Important songwriters as Gildardo Montoya (go to: http://equinoxio.org/columnas/recordando-a-gildardo-montoya-compositor-de-la-plegaria-vallenata-789-789/)

the song “piel de Luna”, for what I read, it seems it was wrote by Mario Pereyra? (I´m not sure), and recorded by EL GRAN COMBO… into the CD “Sin comentarios”.

  2. I live in brussels and I sometimes go to the parties of el sonidero quilombo, all I know about them is they are a brussels based argentinian/chilean soundsystem, they do monthly “clandestino” parties and they created a style called “reggecumbé” mixing roots reggae and cumbia. They’re said to have some political activities linked with some comunist or anarchist groups from chile and argentina, but I’m not sure about that
