DRUMSTEP IS COMING

phpJdHO1l

WHAT IS DRUMSTEP?

URBAN DICTIONARY:

A sub genre of drum and bass where the beat structure is “half time” but the remaining elements still adhere to the usual tempo and melody pattern style

“Just left the studio session with excision downlink and evol intent!! Started on some heavyyyy drumstep :)” – DATSIK

“Drumstep is basically half tempo dnb”

“Same bpm as dnb but same techniques as dubstep ….hence Drum-step”

“Drumstep is taking the double time theory and applying it to DNB…. example: 140bpms feels like 70bpms in dubstep, drumstep is something like 180bpms but feels like 90bpms…. someone correct me if im wrong here… a perfect example would be the “Quarks” song by Dirty Phonics”

“I meant half time, i dont know what i was thinking, too much music theory runnin through my head….and Arron Silverstien, The middle part off Against the Machines is Drumstep i believe, its a 3 part song basically with 3 distinctively different drops.”

DUBSTEP FORUM

So, any of you guys interested in producing tunes in this genre?just uploaded a mix to get you heated.

Description: Minimix by bilsiactracklist1. Eggchan – On the road now2. Skream – Midnight request line (zinc rmx)3. Bilsiac – We control it4. Dj Hazard – wicked so5. Bilsiac – Blood on the line6. Bilsiac – Lonely Department7. Jazzsteppa – Two

Euhm…I may be wrong but…isn’t it just dubstep tracks remixed into DnB?

No need to call it Drumstep…

don’t want to call it drumstep either, but there is a clear difference between regular drumnbass and this genre.  Whatever it’s called, i love to mix it, and id love to have some more tracks like this.

Wtf are you talking about? This is just drum and bass, what is this clear difference you talking about? Is it because of the snare? Is it because it isn’t using the generic amen break style beat? This is silliness!

Ok its drumnbass, the snare is just repeated half the time it is used in regular dnb.  i think it gives a new perspective. btw check out this topic since there are also people who think it is not just clear dnb

half-step-dnb-drum-n-bass-dubstep-170bpm-dubstep-t89027.html

Also the snare is in between where the 2 generic snares would be which gives it the generic dubstep swing. I do like it don’t get me wrong but at the end of the day it’s just another style of drum and bass in my opinion. Didn’t read anyone calling this Drumstep in that thread?

why the fuss over a word?  its just music

Isn’t this just dubstep at 170 bpm? That’s that that’s bad.

Sometimes you have to speed things up a bit, like something I vaguely remember “Wouldn’t it be terrible if Led Zeppelin made all their song at 140 bpm?”.

god, get it right boys, half step dnb is basically hip hop.

LOL!!!!

I do quite like returning to some hip hop vibes though, as I was mainly into hip hop when I started producing.

These are a couple of my “drumstep” attempts…

I won’t say what it is, but it is at 170 bpm. Check it out!

Mayur from Bandish Projekt was in the UK a few weeks ago and as always it’s fun spending time with this dude cause his thinking and ideas are always freshhh and off the radar..lol..

After he gave me a masterclass on how to execute a perfect Indian mash up, he gave me one of the best Indian Dubstep mash ups I’ve ever heard. Then finally he gave me a great mash up of a Nitin Sawhney track.

THE ART OF MAKING A SIMPLE MASH UP

Although it is hard to people to remember what we post, it’s been a while since i (caballo) did a cumbia post;
I took my time listening to most of the new stuff out there, GREAT THINGS!! but my favorite one is still being one of the most underground forms of them: CUMBIA MUFFIN!!
The name is taken from Sargent Garcia’s CUMBIA MUFFIN ALBUM, which basically, is a re-recording jam from his tunes in a Colombian cumbia style, and Garcia’s amazing raggamuffin flow.
Hopefully we can post some of the original Cumbia Muffin some day…It is a jewel.. The art is also made by AFROMESTIZA, same guy who made LATINO RESISTE

To give you an example of CUMBIA MUFFIN this is from Mexican master TJF SOUND

Vallenatos GOGO! Very Be Careful!

phpbWZRNn

No thats not a bad spelling thang in the title of this post. It’s the name of one of the nicest Vallenato bands in the US right now. VERY BE CAREFUL! – Very Be Careful is a homegrown L.A. band that plays Colombian vallenato music, a traditional cumbia sound that centers around the accordion, backed with percussion and bass. Members include: Ricardo “Ricky G” Guzman on accordion and vocals, Arturo “Brickems” Guzman on bass, Craig “Peabody” Martin on guacharaca, Dante “The Rip” Ruiz on campana, and Richard “Mil Caras” Panta on caja vallenata.

Why this, why now? I can almost hear you think? Well, the weather is super nice out today and I’ve been blasting their albums all morning. I thought, why not give these guys some extra shine right now!  with recent write ups on MUDD UP and XLR8R, It’s not hard to imagine them becoming a household name soon. As one critic said referring to the Central American parranda style of VBC: “like it or not, punker or sonidero, new-ager or new-waver, b-boy or cowboy, sober, drunk, few can elude the rump rousing radar of a VBC parranda”…

BRILLIANT BLK JKS

phpWSMfVE

Something a little different from down South this week: a rock group from Johannesburg – albeit one who aren’t afraid of electronic producers re-grooving their guitar-laden Afro-funk.

BLK JKS’ (pronounced ‘Black Jacks’) debut South African EP ‘Mystery’ caught the interest of Diplo when he toured SA in 2007, and he got them a slot at the SXSW Festival. Their performances there snagged the attention of both The Fader mag – who put them on the cover of their March 2008 Africa issue – and the Secretly Canadian stable, home to Antony & The Johnsons, jj and Yeasayer. The label sorted some recording time at the legendary Electric Ladyland studio and lent them the production expertise of Secret Machines’ Brandon Curtis, and the result was the ‘After Robots’ album, which garnered plenty of positive reviews and favourable comparisons to the likes of TV On The Radio.

BLK JKS 2

More importantly (for this blog at least), BLK JKS have no qualms with having their material remixed for the dancefloor. Last year, Ghostly International’s Osborne devised a mysteriously deep version of “Mystery”, and more recently Carlos Ramos of Midnight Rockers Express fame (a legendary 80’s NY spinner who’s played alongside the likes of Alpha Blondy and Hugh Masekela) retooled “Summertime” into a dubby, Shelter-esque disco workout.

Right now the SA quartet are going from strength to strength: they just won Best Alternative album at the South African Music Awards, they’re one of the few local acts playing at the pre-Soccer World Cup concert (alongside the likes of Amadou & Mariam and, er… Shakira) and a new EP called ‘Zol’ (which is local slang for marijuana) is out in June, conveniently coinciding with that gig.

You can get a bunch of free BLK JKS tunes on RCRD-LBL, or grab the ones below…

BONUS: Here’s the video for their debut international single, “Molalatladi”:

PS. On a less auspicious note, BLK JKS recently collaborated with “superstar” DJ Tiesto on a track that’s available as a free download… If that’s your cup of tea then you can get it here.

BxP Soundsistema – Balkan train / Lord of the hansarings EP

phpEX6BJV

Here’s a great release by the same peeps who brought us that massive ANALOGIK track last year Gipsy Kings with Malente and Dex.  I grabbed it from my homie Mikael Palner whi I’ve been in touch with for  afew years now in connection with Analogik.

Mikael runs Urban World Records and the blog too which is well worth checking out on a reegular basis.

Here’s what the label say about this new release:

Here at UrbanWorld we like to travel, we like the sounds of travel and we like to combine it in new and exiting ways. An artist who is brilliant in combining music from around the globe is Kosta Kostov of the BxP Soundsistema, born in Bulgaria, he grew up surrounded by the unique balkan music. Moving to Cologne in Germany opened his mind to clubmusic where he is the main force behind the clubs Balkan Express and Favela Blast and resident DJ of Global Player, the Funkhaus Europe Club.

On his first EP as BxP Soundsistema he is combining the sounds from the Balkan Express and Favela Blast parties, powerful balkan beats with a dancehall rhythm. He worked on this project with the greek funky breakbeat producer & dj George Fotiadis, featuring the serbian MC Killo Killo, Princess Julianna, a Jamaican singer and MC based in London and the Moroccan ribab & violin virtuose player Foulane. An important part of the production and the live shows of BxP Soundsistema is the Greek bouzouki player & percussionist Dimitrius Goldfinger Pingios. The result is fresh new production of own compositions, remixes and mashups, in which the balkan & mediterraneum meets all the nice flavas from dub & reggae through funk & breaks till basss and electro. As if this was not good enough we called Shazalakazoo to get the real sound of balkan disko, BadboE to funk it up bigtime and Al Lindrum to take it all the way to Jamaica.

Kosta Kostov will be in the USA in August 2010 (1/8-18/8) playing at the NYC Tabor Gypsy Festival (13-15/8), if you are interested in making a booking please contact him at kostov “at” gmx.de

Copia Doble Systema: Al Lindrum’s mix is a kicking combination of the dancehall vibe and balkanism!

Eastenders: yess!!! kosta has done it in full effect. with all his cologne- and worldwide buddys. what a train-ride!! who needs planes anyway? catch it! peace, stefan

Dunkelbunt: very very nice. I like every single release on uwr. this label melts all stilez and bring together all the headz from the global beats scene…!

WHAT IS THE LATIN ASS BANGER RESPONSE TO THE MASSIVE DUBSTEP SO DJ’s CAN HAVE IT ON THEIR SETS? MOMMBAHTON
Dave Nada
invented Moombahton (pronounced Moom-buh-tone) at his little cousin’s house party when he slowed an Afrojack remix down to 108 beats per minute. Since then, he’s been making reggaeton-tempo edits of Dutch house and tropical house, and clubs have been going crazy for the stuff.
