MIDWEEK MIXXXTAPES: D’HANA AND RIZZLA, DEVILLE & KIWISTAR!!!

DJ MIXXXES

Mixxxtape time my friends! 3 awesome mixes here, with a queer global bass starter from D’Hana and Rizzla, global bass main course of no particular orientation from DeVille and finishing with an electro swingin dessert from Kiwistar… Let’s do this:

D’Hana and Rizzla

via Dave Quam, here’s a badasssss mix from D’Hana and Rizzla taking in “AGGRESSIVE, OVER-EDUCATED, BANJEE CVNT, URBAN UNDERGROUND POP MUSIC b/w QUEER GLOBAL BASS”.

Dave Quam’s own verdict: “I fuck with this hard” – which I’m guessing is a seal of approval?

DeVille

DeVille

DeVille just sent this mix in full of GB faves including a tune from the forthcoming Sabbo release on GB Digital… Here’s what he had to say about it:

A mix of brand new stuff and some old stuff I dug out across the spectrum of international bass for my friends Abstractor in Venezuela. It mixes UK bass attitude with all the other music from around the world that inspires me. Featuring a couple of tracks I picked up on Generation Bass like Heartbreak and of course Sabbo, some blends I made for the mix and a couple of exclusive forthcoming Senseless tracks from Maga Bo and JTRP. Enjoy!

Kiwistar

Ah, electro swing… I’ve always been a massive swing fan and have always played swing in my sets, but somehow managed to come late to the electro swing party. In fact I discovered it by accident – in an extremely round about way – after having a nostalgic dig into psy trance, which led to progressive, which led to minimal, which led to Basti Grub’s minimal swing tech, to M.In’s less minimal swing house, and eventually the whole electro swing scene. I then got asked to play an electro swing night and proceeded to consume every tune available, so I’m now something of an electro swing expert, and also, if I’m honest, a little bit sick of it. I still love a bit of brass mixed in with, well, anything really, but the basic Parov Stelar / Caravan Palace – type electro swing mould is basically just one idea repeated ad nauseum, and it gets a bit sickly. Especially after last summer, when it seems everyone discovered the genre, and there was DJ mix after DJ mix posted online with tracklists which were literally just Parov after Parov. That’s weak – fair enough if you just wanna make a little mix to bump in your car or whatever, but don’t expect anyone to be impressed.

Anyway, I think I was actually meaning to talk about this Kiwistar mix, which is great, staying with the harder edge of swingin house and electro, although one Parov tune sneaks in near the end. The Dutty Moonshine opener is a killer.

haha no need to apologise kiwi! Parov, Palace et al have their place, and you found that place in your mix…! It’s just when people don’t bother exploring a genre further than the tip of the iceberg that it gets annoying…
