MIDWEEK MIXXXTAPES! ERWTENPELLER, THESILLYTANG, HELLFYRE CLUB

Ghetto Vader
3 badassss mixtapes this week beginning with an epic concept dubstep mix from erwtenpeller (still working out how you’re supposed to pronounce that one), some balkan bass from Thesillytang and wonky gangstaism from Hellfyre Club

Before we jump in though here’s a quick plug for anyone hungry for some global bass in the West country, I’ll be spinning at the Old Fire Station in Bristol on Saturday night, check it: BENIN CITY + DJ Andy Kisaragi & Dj Mon @ The OLD FIRE STATION

Right, got that off my chest, now lets check out those mixes:

This mix is a couple of years old now, but someone just sent it in and I had to post it. Writing these posts I end up listening to a lot of mixtapes, and many of them end up blending into one massive metamix in my brain. Not so this one which sticks out at least 55 million km. Reinvienting Jeff Wayne’s classic / ridiculous (depending on your point of view – for me it’s both in equal measure) 1978 War of the Worlds concept album as a dubstep mix, utilising Richard Burton’s narration and selecting tunes which carry the mood of the story… for me it works incredibly well, a really inspiring mix which explores the possibility of a DJ creating something which is far more than the sum of its parts, but which still works in the club.

There’s a lot of hatin’ in the comments at the end of the mix, where a Pendulum tune sneaks in after the conclusion of the narrative… It does kind of change the mood but actually for me it really works as a sort of ‘end credits’ soundtrack, which lifts the mood & changes the pace yet still carries some of the overall feeling of the mix. And it’s a big tune! (whatever you think of them now, it’s hard to deny that they made some tuuuuuuunes back on that first album).

Hellfyre Club

prometheus mixtape

Great little discovery here via Passion of the Weiss – 20 minute mixtape from LA based rap crew Hellfyre Club. According to the LA Times they’re ‘finding a happy middle ground between street and scholastic, political and profane’
not quite sure about that, there’s some clever lyricism on here but just because you’re not an idiot does that make your flow scholastic? Anyway I get what they’re trying to say & there is definitely a happy middle ground being found here, between super wonky and super commercial, this tape is well worth a listen. Hilarious beat on ‘Pussy in the Air’… rrreeoowwrrr!
