In a scene that is bursting with potential, moombahton producer Jay Fay fits in just fine. On his new EP for Generation Bass, Mashitup, the young tropical bass wunderkind continues to impress the world with a progressive take on the genre’s bold new style. Rarely can someone who’s scarcely past the age of 18 say that they’ve spent half of their life in music, and even rarer than that, have shared stages with the superstar likes of Drake, Steve Aoki, Rusko, Mount Kimbie, Big K.R.I.T, Wale, and Big Sean.
A drummer since the age of nine, this producer and DJ started out as a mash-up wizard before his interest in bass-heavy underground styles of the moment, including indie hip-hop, dancehall and African kuduro made him a prime candidate for Moombahton stardom.
Generation Bass is proud to unleash a collection of tunes that give a taste of the St. Louis, Missouri native’s talents. The title track, Mashitup, sees him soldering tribal beats onto bashment-tinted electronica as his patented builds and drops lead you through peaks and valleys, while the party-starting jackhammer that is Killswitch, produced with Australian Moombahtonista J-Trick, seems to hint at a cinematic armageddon at 110bpm with its foreboding mix of Dutch house warning sirens and cavernous reverbed sweeps layered over intricate, impulsive beats.
Mashitup comes fast on that back of a string of successes for the young prodigy, having released two EPs already this year, Bonkers and $$ OOPS $$, which caught the ear of the likes of Skream, Toddla T and DJ Craze. His trademark hard-hitting jams like Sabro and Jungle, his contribution to the The Rise Of Moombahton compilation, are hi-tech omens – foreboding signs that something major is about to happen. Sturdy drums, low, stomach-rumbling snares, double-tempo percussion and feverish melody synth lines are aimed at your feet.
Jay Fay is the complete package, a producer who has superior production skills, knows no boundaries and has an imagination that leads him to untraveled pathways. The inventor of Moombahton, Dava Nada, has already thrown his weight behind this kid, now it’s time for you to pledge your allegiance to Jay Fay!
