Amidst the onslaught of EP’s, LP’s and even OPP’s that I usually face and write about (happily, maybe onslaught has a negative connotation) there was one that wasn’t pressed on me. The style of music is outside my usual blogging so I couldn’t find a place for it. It was funny because while doing my usual blogging gigs I was listening to this one a lot.
Calavera Calavera is an electronic project from Madrid. It was formed in 2009 by Mr. Calavera calavera aka Teto who is behind the keyboards, samplers and programming. Also in the group is Raul Biloxi on guitars and keyboards and Omar Les ole on bass and guitars.
What makes Calavera Calavera worthy of a Generation Bass posting status is a few things. Their new album ‘The Fearless Vampire Killers’ featuring a fusion of electronic styles which upon first glance of their cover one might assume it’s just another goth-raver-industrial or what have you, album. This is not true at all. While keeping a theme of darkness these tracks can exist in many circles, it’s EDM that you can also chill and listen to. They aren’t afraid of writing melodies which I found rare these days. Who would have thought that melodies in music would be a rare concept in electronic music? Well as I stated these tracks are full of powerful melodies amidst the darkness and beats. I come from the Miles Davis belief that one must search for and pull out the melody within the melody within the melody until you die. That’s just what these guys do.
What’s also surprising is how well their track D.I.S.C.O. fits with the rest of the album, it is straight upbeat nu disco with wobbles. Then track 10 comes in ‘Our Last Summer’ to bring down the energy with a beautiful melodically chill peacefulness, but just as you get comfortable it goes into a crazy drop. I like their use of melody intertwining through the crazy dubstep, electro, and house beats.
