Sexxy Saturday Cumbia – January

Art by Tropi Delia

As we enter 2017 to the uplifting sounds of the cumbias of the future, we have been accumulating new tropical beats with more hunger than ever before. Below is a selection of this month´s cumbia orientated releases. We hope you enjoy:

 Silly tang selected:

 Dj Elwood – Live Set

To start this month is cold winter I wanted to introduce a Dj which I have never had the pleasure of seeing or meeting but always heard great feedback from his sessions! Actually a home bred Dj from France, Rennes. A city I have plenty of time for as I lived there for 2 years! This mix is a subtle blend between cumbia – Tropical bass and more modern beats such as global footwork. Really smooth from start to finish you can enjoy it whilst sipping on your hot wine!

Sauvage FM –Tropical Thug

Staying in the same region of the world here is an absolute killer mixtape by Sauvage FM called Tropical Thug. As I said this mixtape is badboy proper going in on the tropical bass and global madness, always with a hint of South America? I really dig his tunes and his production it’s always bass orientated to make you groove it hard!

Henry Cruz – Ta encendio el beeper

Now then I know this track is not totally cumbia, and I do apologise for the purists before they kill me J but all in all, this entire track has made my month a brighter and warmer place. Henry Cruz is his name and make you dance is his aim! This semi acid, footwork and salsa track has come out with perfect timing for us to get the aguardiente out, and forget about the winter.

Universal Sound – Dinamita

Universal Sound out of Buenos Aires is a new producer which I have come across and I have to say what a good pleasing surprise! This cumbia is simply based and very humbly put together but has so many little details that it comes together as a hit. Those vocals and breakdowns and real smooth and the 2nd drop is bass heavy trust me! Very groovy tune indeed big up yourself!

Club de Baile CD’M – Cumbia in Lab (Latin Bass Mexico Records)

I´m not sure if you have come across this huge Latin Bass Mexico records compilation? Every time they appear you know you will have a shower of amazing tunes for the rest of the year J On this note big up señor Oscilator Bass every time for his works within our cumbia world. Coming back on this track, first word is spacey, bubbly and fresh. The notes and works on the mids are wicked, like a wah-wah pedal for guitars if you know what I mean. Then a nicely garnished bassline and some sweet, discrete drums to help put this piece of art together.

Amambay 100000 – Chumbimba

Let’s get twisted shall we? I have always been a fan of Amambay 100000 ´s work but this time I had to share it with you guys. This broken down cumbia is a killer for any satanic rituals trust me J personally I love the accordion and this twisted like sounds coming from everywhere. Very square production, as always with this great maestro. It is barely legal to minors (under 18) I believe so go run grab it whilst you can!

Novalima – Como yo Captain Planet remix (Wonderwheel Recordings)

So having the album on vinyl in my collection when I saw the remix Ep coming out I was stung! Hooked, addicted! This remix is the one and only Captain Planet which always comes with very fresh instrumental and a mix down full of air and clarity. On here very classic Novalima track which he has blended into a sublime afro-latin dancefloor starter.

Chakana – Cumbia arper

This track is rave! From start to finish a proper cumbia rave anthem if you ask me. Everything in it has its euphoric tones and shades. Really nice classic guitar notes added on a super heavy linear cumbia beat with added raving effects. Really digging this and will be playing out a lot!

Pixi trace – Monte Bajo (Club Social Tropical)

Whilst we are raving well let’s stay in there and act cool ! A very acid track, this has blown me away properly. It is a heavily built riddim with these nail on board type noises which really blend in perfectly with the cumbia element. Such kicks and build up this tune for me has done it. Proper January rince out!

Jhon Montoya – Goulash Disko live set

Now quickly presenting this mix recorded at Goulash Disko festival which we have a had the pleasure of witnessing the whole Selva posse. Great mix all together and really fitting with the festival vibes. Sun, chill and well-being. Big ups Mr Montoya!

DJ Neber – Cumbia of the spirit

Bit of Cumbia and a bit of Hip-hop, “who ya gonna calla?”

Well we all know who we have to call the all mighty Dj Neber is always on the frontline with his fine style of cumbia turntablist! Really nice beat on this one especially the wobbly guitar and the high hat toned drum break. This is the far west within Dj Neber´s musical world.

Moto Kiatu – Malaria

No Mr Tang it’s not cumbia! It’s NOT CUMBIA!!!

Well sorry I know but this project is so exiting that I had to post something about it. Out mates from Madrid aka Sonidero Mandril y Manglar have come together to present to us Moto kiatu ¡ Very fresh very new so full of surprises this is the first mix they are presenting from the one and only jungle brother: MALARIA. If you don’t know of this killer Dj get to know, proper underground legend my tell ya!

Coconutah selected:

Tropikhongo & Pablo Pachacutik – Guerrero Andino (Lascivio Bohemia remix)

Lascivio Bohemia remixes Tropikhongo & Pablo Pachacutik electro cumbia style. A slow atmospheric burner, it creates an electronic andean vibe that make for a smooth, pleasant journey. Layers of synths blend with flutes and mallets blend seamlessly with guiros and percussion, making for a hypnotic, relaxing listen.

Animal Chuki remix “Beto Kele” – NOVALIMA (Wonderwheel Recordings 2017)

Another Novalima remix, this is a real rebajada stomper. The Peruvian band´s vocals mix amazingly with the slow pounding rhythm whilst the low and dirty bass is perfect for slow head shaking on the dancefloor. Animal Chuki have been bringing big, dubby tracks recently, and this is no exception. Big tune.

Dj Padrinomixsonidero – Cumbia Picosita 2017 Limpia Los Pipopes

https://soundcloud.com/djpadrinomixsonidero/004-la-cumbia-picosita-2017-grupo-los-pipopes

Straight from New York, Dj Padrino delivers a lovely grooving, old school Mexican cumbia, with layers of synths and crazy guitar riffs all over! Great sound, great production, this is definitely a catchy riddim. Check it out!

El Extravagante – Altiplanica (Tribilin Sound Remix) (Regional Label)

Out on Sello Regional, el extravagante´s Patiperro EP is a must listen. Between banging Cumbia tunes like La cumbia de Chile, resides tribilin sound´s interpretation of Altiplanica. In his recognizable style this is an evolving, continuous journey that will make you want to listen again, and again. There are also remixes from a handful of other amazing artists to listen to, making for a nicely round, full EP.

Panther Panther! – Dunobizeh (Hawaii Bonsai Records)

Swiss label Hawaii bonsai records presents Dunobizeh by Pink Panther, along with a whole series of tasty remixes by the crème de la crème tropical artists around. It has a definite cumbia orientation with lots of catchy synth and guitar riffs, intricate psychedelic progression, and a good variety of punchy tropical beats. Amongst other little gems, check out the Yeahman or Sonido profundo remixes!

Turbo Sonidero – La Kumbia Del Trompas (Feat. Talacha) #fucktrump

In typical turbo sonidero style, this tune is a pretty relentless, synth driven, sonidero trip with heavy guiros and haunting vocals. The warping synths and samples contribute to making a trippy experience! Fuck trump.

Kaygee Selected:

Pol Nada – Canto a la paz (Jin Yerei remix) (Fertil Discos)

Big ups Jin Yerei on this one ! I’ve been rinsing his music lately and he never stops to surprise me. Here, he has kept the vocal from the original tune and added a relatively minimalist yet powerful beat, creating this deep, crunchy and progressive atmosphere that he usually has. Keep an eye out for Jin Yerei as he’ll be releasing more beauties like this one very soon! You can check out the original tune, as well as a brilliant remix by Dandara on the full release: https://soundcloud.com/fertildiscos/sets/pol-nada-canto-a-la-paz

Sidirum – Costa Sureña (ft. Barrio Lindo)

I think I missed that one in time for last month’s post so here it incase you hadn’t heard it! It’s always a ‘full experience’ to listen to Sidirum’s music. He always takes the subs one step deeper and I love it! He just dropped a new EP, ‘LUNA EP’, in which he teamed up with the all mighty Barrio Lindo for this tune and created this beautiful trip, with a very repetitive and hypnotizing approach for our delight. Make sure you check out the whole EP.

V.A. – Mare Insularum (Shika Shika)

So this one is a very special release for myself & Coconutah, in which we were very happy and honored to be included in, alongside so many great artists that we love and often mention on this blog ! This compilation, released on Shika Shika, is a journey itself; it covers many different rhythms and atmospheres, taking you through different electronic worlds and settings, whilst enhancing the whole effect with more traditional instrumental moments! I could go on about it, or I could simply recommend you to sit back, hit play, and enjoy !!

Nicola Cruz – Cantos de Vision (Multi Culti)

So while we’re on the deep vibes, think I can mention this big release on Multi Culti, which will also be released in 12” format ! The all mighty Nicola Cruz strikes again showing us just how he does it ! Absolute vibes and instrumental emotion in this ep, in which Nicola Cruz once more manages to bring the roots to the dancefloor, in what they describe as “a psychedelic replanting of folkloric roots”.

It’s great to see this genre of music finally seeing the light on vinyl format!

El Extravagante – Ancestral (Patiperro EP – Regional Label)

As mentioned above by Coconutah, shout out to Regional for this release, which also includes this beauty by El Extravagante and 5 wicked remixes by Tribilin Sound, Señor Chancho, Derrok, Franco Franco and El Buga. I had never heard of El Extravagante but was very happy to discover his works and especially this tune, which takes us straight across a few oceans and land straight on Oriental grounds, with repetitive sitars, chants and percussions to take you into a total trance. Make sure you check out the whole EP, and enjoy the free download, as always on Regional Label!

El Remolón – Energy Control

El Remolon is another one of these producers who knows how to push the subs a little further and release this type of bass driven minimal digital cumbia beat, full of space synths to build up on the final effect. Rinse out !

San Ignacio & Ubunto – Dois Mil Cinco (Quiero Recordings)

What an epic tune! It’s part of Quiero Recording’s wonderful fifth compilation, and brings in a special psychedelic funky and almost ritualistic atmosphere, which really works! The rest of the compilation is full of great sounds, approaching different areas than this one, so make sure you have a listen!

TREMENDA JAURÍA – Nos deseo // feat KUMBIA QUEERS

We’ve mentioned this new band from Madrid on here a few times already and they are back with a new set of tunes based around loads of great featurings. This one is a collaboration with the tropical punk band Kumbia Queers. They bring in the ‘villera’ side of things, and take Tremenda Jauria on a more ‘cumbia tip’, than the straight ‘reggaeton reivindicativo’ they usually go for. Keep an eye out for these guys, they are up for it and rinsing dacenfloors !

Ondatrópica – Lazalypso

It’s always a pleasure to hear a new tune from Ondatropica, and see how they bring so many elements, band members, sounds, rhythms, etc… together with perfection! I look forward to hear their new album to be released soon!!!

Sidi Wacho – Buena Onda (Videoclip)

Big ups to Sidi Wacho; I absolutely love this band and everything they do, and here is a brand new video clip of their great tune ‘Buena Onda’ for our pleasure, including the usual good vibes and musical delight.

KUMBIA BORUKA Live Au Transbordeur – “LA VIDA SE VIVE”

Here’s a little extract of what goes on when Kumbia Boruka come and play live; this was taken from one of their shows in their current hometown @ Le Transbordeur (Lyon, FR).

We hope you enjoyed the selection! See you next month.

CHUCK UPBEAT – LAO KICK/SHENG IT [ORIENTAL BASS]

“Oriental Bass” is a subgenre, an idea born thanks to the musical experiments started in China by Howie Lee and his crew. A mixture of modern electronic music such as EDM, Future Bass, classic Hip-hop beats and Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese traditional music instruments, samples, sounds and atmosphere.

Chuck Upbeat started experimenting with this sound by releasing an “Oriental Bass” EP where he showed Asian inspired music transformed into dance bass beats. The EP was a surprising thing for Global Bass scene traditionally ruled by Tropical rhythms and sounds but luckily it was greeted by many underground producers in USA, Europe and what is more important by musicians from China, Korea and Vietnam.

The new EP is another step in this direction. Chuck Upbeat made two original Bass tracks mixing samples of traditional Chinese opera and orchestras. Practically no electronic synths were involved. Instead samples of Chinese sounds were transformed into synths. This approach makes the sound to be really unique.
“Lao Kick” is a mixture of EDM and TRAP genres with massive bassline kick and epic Chinese orchestral samples, while “Sheng It” is a deeper thing to play on dancefloors full of Chinese drums and cymbals with classical Chinese sheng instrument.

Global Bass genre shows that there are no genre limits in fact and a true fusion of cultures, rhythms and sounds take this music to another level!

Produced, mixed, mastered and released by Chuck Upbeat in 2016.

Kicking Off 2017 With The New Dark Generation

2017 will see a rise of Lovecraftian, cosmic horroresque aesthetics

2016 slipped away without a spotlight for a development in music that has come into full force over the course of this year, completely out of view of most blogs and music magazines, even independently of the internet avant-garde’s metal fetish. It is one of the most successful stories of how a music movement can be assembled from different genres and musical backgrounds. Meet the new dark generation.

I’m calling it a generation rather than a movement or a scene because not all of the artists are necessarily connected or would recognise each other as part of the same thing. Rather there are smaller groups and scenes, probably more than there are on my radar right now, that are making forward looking, multi-genre music with a dark twist. With the facebook group Dark Electronic Music, I’ve tried to tie all of these small movements together and to some extent this was successful, but still far from where I’d hope it will move. But all of these movements and scenes have grown and diversified this year and that is something which can never deserve enough support.

Some household names and some new names to support. Also I lost a bit sight on the techno, hardcore and industrial side of things, so that’ll be saved for next time.

1. Hexx 9 records (label)

Of all the labels and collectives out there, few embody what I call the ‘new dark generation’ as on point as the New York based trailblazers of Hexx 9. Born out of the post-witchouse movement, they have released next generation gothic music on the interface of witch house, industrial, ritual ambient, drone, noise rave, dub, trap and more. Even Abu Ama‘s Arabic ambient dub tarraxo has found a warm home at the label.

2. 209 SINS

With separate projects known under different pseudonyms, 209 SINS is one of the most consistently active Soundclouders, combining repost selections with own productions and mixtapes: れモモ刀下∨ㄥ 匕卄丹れム乙 for vocal hiphop, ᴆ ᴀ ᵛ ᴵ ᴆ † ᴌᴬ ᴮ 0 ᵙ ℜ for hard-hitting industrial DnB rave crossovers, Philip K. Decker for cinematic ambient influenced instrumental tracks and yunΠg≠wellbutriΠ for mixtapes.

3. ßęđŧīmĕ Šŧōŗĩėş

We’ve supported the Paris based prodigy ßęđŧīmĕ Šŧōŗĩėş and his alter-project Shinji (now [lyn]) several times before on the blog, but 2016 was the year where he put himself on the map, both with his two artistic projects and with his avant-witchhouse Facebook channel U+06e9. An autodidact classical singer, electronic producer and improvisationalist, bedtime stories’ has developed an impressively unique style, individually, without following any trend. Although he calls it ‘classical witch’, the sound transcends the witch house genre in every possible aspect, while its relation to classical music is even more intriguing. ßęđŧīmĕ Šŧōŗĩėş is a neoromantic, early-classical punk, reclaiming the sound and aesthetics of thoroughly elite, institutionalised entities as a tool for improvisational self-expression.

I’m looking forward to what 2017 will bring. Yet for now, ‘Gaia’ (Hexx 9, September 2016) is ßęđŧīmĕ Šŧōŗĩėş’ defining release.

Ģăīă was a project created by an unknown entity, a creature able to bend the nature of things and able to change reality by interacting with dreaming people. Ģăīă was able to save lives, but playing with human psyche is not without consequences, and most of the dreamers died. Only a few stayed alive, connecting with nature to transfer the energy of the entity into the lands. Now, Ģăīă is all around us and influence our reality, but maybe this reality is just a lng dream orchestrated by Ģăīă itself.

One of the exiting aspects of ßęđŧīmĕ Šŧōŗĩėş is that he knows how to deconstruct his own sound, combining elements of it such as the gothic opera singing, with vastly different vibes such as this industrial, rhythmic ambient track collab with Achromatic Residue.

4. Volkanos

Another very active producer and scene pusher involved in blending witch house elements with industrial ritual ambient music is Volkanos from Denver, U.S. Involved with the Hexx 9 label as well as the dark experimental techno label Tenebrous Music. Grown up in a family involved with Wicca and Shamanism, Volkanos always had a vision of fusing music with symbolism, mythology and ritual choreography. Expect a more in-depth interview soon on the blog!

Volkanos’ style: suggestive horroresque soundscapes, blended with organic percussion and witch house flavoured rave synths

https://soundcloud.com/v0lkanos/all-souls-mixtape

The All Souls mixtape which came out around halloween is one of my favourite mixes of 2k16, particularly because Volkanos, next to myself, is one of the only artists in the world fusing witch house, dark techno and 209 sins style industrial bass music with the dark flavoured side of ‘avant garde club’

5. Young Yogi

Supported several times before, Young Yogi, alter-project of GAMEFACE, is paving the way ahead of the dark trap microgenre which GAMEFACE has been building for about two years now, steering away from sounds of EDM trap as well as from post-internet cloud trap into a more unique and conceptual direction. Young Yogi’s sound combines the explosive tension and monstruous 808 bass of the new dark wave of cloud trap and with psychedelic uplifting melodies and cyber-utopian mystical thematics.

7. SADWRIST

Mad genius of the witch house scene, playing with thematics and imagery sometimes too gruesome for even me to share. When he disappeared from all his social media platforms at some point last year I, and probably more with me, was honestly worried he’d put an end to his life. But he came back and has been uploading so much fire lately, venturing from his already rough and eclectic twist on witch house further  into noise, breakcore, hardcore, dark trap and black metal.

***

8. RARE AKUMA

Especially Sadwrist’s more trap leaning work would probably fit the new #RAGECORE genre, created by the Antwerp based beatmaker Rare Akuma. Pushing a blend that is sitting somewhere in between drill, deathstep and metal, Rare Akuma bridges the worlds of hiphop, loud bass music and the rise of metal in the electronic avant-garde.

9. ATILLA THE HVN & NOIRE ANTIDOTE †

The witch house scene in the Netherlands is small and fragmented. The people that make it are not really connected into one scene. In fact, there isn’t really a scene at all. The genre is just getting a bit more known over here only recently (then I’m not talking about Crystal Castles) among the new generation of dark-alternative leaning fans who can nowadays listen to anything from vaporwave or sad rap to anime music or whatever edgy genre the internet has spit out over the last years. Producers are a different story. With Atilla The Hvn and Noire Antidote there are two great forward looking examples, one coming (as far as I can tell) from industrial techno, the other (alter-project of Benjamin’s Plague) coming from the cybergoth-industrial scene.

From Tilburg, home base of Generation Bass, Atilla the Hvn seemed to come out of the blue when I first discovered him last year, but apparently he has not only been experimenting with witch house for more than two years, has a solid following and is well connected in different forward looking corners of music. If I may bet on any producer from the Netherlands to rise to greater heights in 2017, Atilla The Hvn is the one.

Dark melancholic trance & hardcore beautifully blended and distorted into a powerful emotional rave flavoured soundscape.

I’ve known the guy behind Noire Antidote for a while (never met him in person tho) because of my occasional adventures in the industrial scene and how much I like dark electro, I was even happier to find out that within the remnants of the gothic scene at large, there is interest in witch house as a direction to go into. Not that I have anything particular against industrial hardcore or psytrance, but with self-proclaimed scene destroyer DJ Krat (industrial hardcore/rhythmic noise), the psy/goa scene or wallowing in German festival nostalgia as the only three options, witch house was never embraced by the gothic scene in the Netherlands so far. In 2017, things have changed. Whether it makes sense or not to still talk about a gothic scene is irrelevant. Noire Antidote is making great music and actively reaches out to crowds with livesets on industrial minded festivals, without the need for a witch house scene.

10. The Enigma TNG

Back in the days I’ve suppored The Enigma TNG, still one of my all-time favourite producers, as an example of what an eclectic, multi-genre cyberpunk flavoured dark music future could look like. Almost two years later, he is still going strong, consistent pushing and developing his unique style. And where back then, he was a solitary pioneer with a solid following mainly in the world of cybergoth-electro and alternative electrostep, today his sound, involving elements of metal and cinematic epic orchestral music, is being mentioned as an inspiration for the direction in which the club avant-garde will be moving in 2017.

His newest album, ‘Midnight’, came out in October last year.

11. Toxic Embryo

Upcoming live electronic formation and enfant terrible of the dark-alternative scene in the Netherlands. Drawing inspiration from sources like Babymetal, BOTDF, anime music and nightcore, Toxic Embryo’s twist on dark electropop possesses the same post-ironic DIY edge as PC Music’s bubblegum rave or Elysia Crampton’s conscious use of cartoonish horror elements and recontextualised pop sentimentality. The nostalgic, trancy neo-rave melodies and anime-esque adventure lyrics combined with campy cyberpunk aesthetics will leave the traditional electropop fan in utter confusion whether this is a joke or truly garbage. Yet at the same time, this androgynous blend of hyperpop and angelwave, fused with metal, hardcore, trance, rap and live performance is exactly where the avant-garde of internet culture will be moving in 2017.
