DJ N.K. : ANGOLA ZURIK EP OUT NOW I-TUNES, BEATPORT, JUNO, AMAZON

Generation Bass presents: DJ N.K. – ANGOLA ZURIK EP

We at Generation Bass still remember the excitement when we first heard Kuduro. A fast, dangerous sounding blend of house and rap, sung/rapped in Portuguese at breakneck speeds. Like a house version of a voodoo chant. It took us hours, scouring the depths of the 2008/2009 internet, to find those first mp3’s. Mostly uploaded by a few guys in Angola who were lucky enough to have some internet, these were the 96kbs building blocks of a genre that still easily holds its own in 2014. The genre holds a special place in our hearts and we still love to play those cuts where they work best, on a dance floor. We are proud to present this great EP by established producer DJ N.K. (real name Pedro Cardosa) with some of the best modern Kuduro tracks we’ve heard in a long, long time!

DJ N.K. adds something new to the table as well. Besides his crystal clear production and razor sharp beats he throws in an excessive amount of percussion to give the rhythms even more drive. This is a 6 track EP that completely wipes the floor with so much generic music out there it’s not even funny anymore. This young producer from Lisbon and being half Angolan himself understands the strong points of a well produced beat like no other. Coming from a hip-hop background he slowly grew and kept on perfecting his skills. Since 2006 he’s been focussed completely on his Kuduro tracks and has been playing all over, along the likes of DJ Fofuxo, DJ Marfox and DJ Breaks.

This EP sees him drop 6 gems in 22 minutes, and not one of them wasted.

The EP kicks off with a statement of intent, “Angola Zurik” where he takes it back to some classic Kuduro. Filtered breaks, steady banging drums and syncopated percussion. Dare I say, better than anything Buraka has thrown at us in the last 3 years! “Apagao de Luanda” takes the tempo down a notch and then something miraculous happens. For the first time you can hear how close this music sounds to old school Chicago house. And just when you realise this, DJ N.K. throws in a load of percussion that makes it sound like an authentic tribal anthem. Mind Blown! The energy maintains very high with the next track, my personal favourite “Carnaval no Musseke”. Which, borders more on 3ball than any other cut on here, but also holds some crazy synths and zaps in the mix which propels this track like a rocket. The fourth joint “Na Namibe” throws in some real African flavour with the screeching monkey samples and the percussive melody that sounds like its being banged out on a coconut. An added bonus is the really gorgeous vocal line in there as well. The tribal influence is even clearer in the penultimate track “Noites do Mussulo” (‘Nights at Mussulo’, a club in Lisbon), which is stacked to the rafters with energetic conga and bongo percussion. I really, seriously cannot imagine anyone standing still when that track is played. Ever! “Transito das 07h” ends the bunch of with 3ball tribal percussion, wild vocal samples and a sh*tload of synths buzzing in your ear. A great close to a great EP of energetic, frantic music that perfectly bridges the gap between Africa and Europe!

Bison : The Wave Of Tarraxinha out now on I-Tunes, Beatport… [Purple Wow Tarraxo]

Bison cover

It’s Valentines Day and we couldn’t have hoped to drop anything more beautiful and romantic than this now classic and timeless EP.

It is out now in all Digital Stores worldwide.

Bison is one of our most exciting discoveries in recent years and a name to watch in 2014 and beyond. This guy puts the “Purple Wow” into Tarraxo!!!

Here’s what Okayafrica had to say about him:

Bison is an Angolan-born, Lisbon-raised young producer crafting trot-pace beats in the style of tarraxinha — a stripped and slowed-down take on Angolan kizomba that focuses on the rhythm and percussion of the track, rather than it’s song and vocals. Bison’s 5-track Wave Of Tarraxinha EP runs through different shades of the genre: from the brooding highlight “O Demonio Do Tarraxo,” which sheds light on a brand new use of G-funk synthesizers, to the fuzzed-out bass on “Future Tarraxo.”

Here’s what The Fader said:

“Bison is able to maintain the tarraxinha groove, people who dance tarraxinha can get down to his beats. I inadvertently tested it on my girlfriend, who enjoys dancing kizomba, and immediately demanded I put this song on her phone seconds after I started playing it”

Here’s what we say:

Generation Bass presents Bison: “The Wave of Tarraxinha EP”

Tarraxo, Tarraxinha, Zouk, Zouk Bass, Kizomba, Ghetto Zouk and Cabo Love. Those genres, those names only mean so much, but what does matter is that a whole new wave of young African producers and talent in the African Diaspora has come to light. Those who have been following Generation Bass the last couple of years know what we are talking about. As our search for that perfect beat continues, we’ve been bumping into a LOT of mid tempo music from Africa. And we’ve unearthed a landslide of new percussion driven music that is begging for a western club audience. Our latest lump of gold is this truly awesome EP by a young guy called DJ Bison.

DJ Bison aka Felisberto is 23 year old. He was born in Benguela, Angola and raised in Lisbon, Portugal. He started producing music in 2008 and names the godfather of Angola’s Kuduro scene, DJ Znobia as his main influence. Znobia is not only credited as one of Kuduro’s most prolific producers, but his slower Tarraxinha stuff has made quite the impact as well. That’s also the current genre name Bison and other younger producers are using. Musically it’s a stripped down version of Kizomba, with a clear focus on the rhythms and percussion and less about the song and vocals. That’s also the offering on this great EP.

The five cuts on here all show the forward thinking, modern take on Kizomba and Zouk.

The EP kicks of with the clicky kicks of “O Demonio Do Tarraxo”, a moody take on the genre with dark brooding strings and an almost g-funk melody line. Pure and uncut awesomeness!

The second cut is “My Love” which reminds us almost like the dreamy quality some of the Coco Bryce tracks have. A deep kick and snappy reverbed claps keep it minimal and give it that hip hop, head bop feel for long night time drives.

Next is “Ghetto Tarraxo”, which is all percussion and the same sluggish strings. The melody gets dropped in that synthy pan flute sound we all used to hate on in the 80’s, but is def back in the audio palette since deep house made its comeback.

“Future Tarraxo” sounds like a cross between a Miami Vice soundtrack and something you’d imagine gets played at a big city club where superstars hang out. Opposing melodies and great warped drive on this one.

The last cut is “Dangerous Tarraxo” which sounds like a next generations “Moments in Love”. Lush and warm sounds, clear and bright percussion and all-round great cinematic feel. This cut has got it all!

If this EP is anything to go by, the future of music is indeed firmly rooted in its percussive past. But it brings something new to the table. Modern, beautiful production and deep, resonating beats. This is the African Diaspora at its very best. This is the sound of Dj Bison!

CASTRO – WHO AM I EP OUT NOW IN DIGITAL STORES WORLDWIDE

Castro- Who Am I EP Artwork

This great EP is out now and available in most digital stores worldwide.

Since his debut on Enchufada’s infamous Upper Cuts series back in October, Castro is back with his first EP ‘Who Am I’. Featuring beautiful, hand painted artwork from fellow weshman ‘Snowskull’, and a remix from London’s own ‘SPRT ANML’, BBC Radio 1 support from Branko on his first ‘In New DJs We Trust’ and Adam Walton’s Musical Mystery tour – this certainly has been a package worth waiting for. Castro’s ‘Who Am I’ EP is an exploration of global textures, harmonic complexity and hard hitting Tropical Bass music.

‘Sea Monkeys’ begins with a nod to the tuned mallet percussion sounds being utilised by Bonobo, Jamie XX, French Express or Nine Toes’ recent smash ‘Finder’. This aspect of Castro’s music is not to be over looked, as it points to a huge influence in his sound – UK Bass. This is something that he strives for in every production: an opportunity to bring the eclectic, worldly tones of the Tropical Bass movement to a UK audience.

‘Warning’ is a track that Castro started drafting many a moon ago – when the fresh up-tempo garage/house sounds of Redlight were smashing the UK charts. Castro shelved the idea back in 2011 and revisited it in the summer of 2013 whilst living in Greece. The nod to the UK Bass scene is again, very prominent in this track. This is evident in the jazzy chord stabs and the warm organ that pumps throughout the cacophony of vocal chops. Castro is bringing Tropical Bass to the UK and this EP is a great start.

Here’s something that most DJ/Producers simply cannot match, watch him in action doing live renditions of tracks from his awesome EP:

KJs – MUTANTS EP OUT NOW [ZOUK BASS]

v9

This EP was free a few weeks ago, it is no more, and so if you wanna cop this, which you do, all you now need to do is to click on buy at one of the digital stores.

If you love Zouk Bass, you need this, even if you don’t, you still need this!

Generation Bass presents: KJs “Mutants EP”

The stronghold of global bass, zouk bass and all things innovative in the field of music, Generation Bass, is back with a team of ace producers. KJs are three producers based in Manchester and London. They produce global, tropical and zouk bass, house, kuduro and UK funky at the highest level possible. With their roots deep in the UK’s dance music heritage, Manchester producers KJs (Taz, James and Phil) have a long working partnership. First, promoting club nights and DJing; which led naturally on to producing music.

In 2010 they started the KJs as a project to produce Global Bass flavoured tracks, getting support from DJs such as Branko, Toddla T and Flore. They instinctively embraced the Zouk Bass movement that Buraka Som Sistema and Generation Bass exposed the wider world to, and began experimenting with its sound. The result is an unbelievably heavy EP with serious bass pressure in different shapes and sizes. Blending global bass elements with Zouk’s tempo and percussion is so logical; you wonder why nobody did it before. The production is sharp and crisp and has everything you would need to turn any dance floor upside down. A blend of dance hall’s best elements and syncopation and that clangy mid range 3ball and zouk-esque percussion gets topped here by some deep synths, that sometimes reminisce of late nights and getting drunk with your mates doing silly dances.

The “Mutants EP” is five tracks deep and bounces back and forth across all the genres mentioned before. ‘Ape Shake’ kicks off with an infectious rhythm right away and swings back and forth like crazy, the kick drums follow the piano and bass line and squeaky synths and shakers add that feeling of tropical heat. ‘Pressure’ takes us closer to dancehall territory with its pronounced conga’s and typical Jamaica swagger. ‘Closer’ guests Vieka on vocals and is one of those more clubby moments on the EP, when organ deep house stabs pair up perfectly with Zouk percussion. Amazing! The fourth cut on here, ‘Sands of Alexander’, brings something distinctly oriental to the table with its samples and percussion and oriental styles synth motif. Yet again the deep kicks propel the riddim here and take it home to where it belongs, blasting out of a club sound system. Closing cut ‘Ziren’ kicks of a bit darker than the rest of the EP, as if to give us a foreboding warning of things to come. Its reggaeton and moombahton influences are clear though and that bass drum that accents the melody is just perfect. It’s easy to say this track has a cinematic feel to it, because it’s an instrumental jam, but this really brings images to mind of long, late night drives, heading for trouble. Be sure to grab this EP soon as it’s a prime example of the power of zouk and the sheer quality of these cats. KJs for the win!

1418418_10153362931325251_550290403_n

6 months ago JSTJR was a barely known name, yet now he is one of America’s hottest young producers and one of its fastest rising stars in the American underground dance community.

JSTJR’s Zouk Bass anthem “Cerveja” was released just over 6 months ago on the “Zoukology” EP. It caused some major ripples in the dance community and is now rightfully regarded as a seminal Zouk Bass release and an instant classic.

A few months back we decided to organize a Remix Contest and we chose 7 winning entries. These winners were chosen simply because their tracks moved us all in one way or another and we felt they brought something new, different and/or exciting to the track.

There is a variety of dance genres represented in the winning entries, everything from Bass through to New Orleans Bounce music aka “Twerk”, Tarraxinha aka Zouk Bass, Moombahton, Kuduro/Jungle hybrids and Zouk Bass/Twerk hybrids aka Twerk Bass and/or Twerkaxinha.

You can now grab all the winning entries in glorious WAV format.

Generation Bass Presents : Insane Fennel "From Russia With Love" [OUT NOW]

fennel sml

This great album has seen this Artist’s name emerging into the stream of consciousness of many of the big names in this scene and deservedly so because nobody sounds like Insane Fennel and he has a truly unique voice.  After a period of being free, this album is now on sale and no longer free.

Insane Fennel is certainly a name to watch.  Since bursting onto the Zouk Bass scene, he has been one of our favourite artists in that scene.  He fuses African Tarraxo beats, Juke and DnB with native Russian melodies and instrumentations and it’s an intoxicating & enthralling combination.

His music is melodic, cinematic, exciting and moving. He paints a soundscape that is unique to him and that’s what we love about him.

[Artwork: Alexey Tompson]

Insane Fennel is one of the most powerful representatives of Russian underground Transnational Bass scene. The starting point of his musical activity is considered to be in 2005 participating in grindcore group “Katse”. His passion for electronic music led to experiments with techno, dnb, dubstep but his meeting with Zouk Bass in the Buraka Som Sistema Boiler Room rolled his neck in the direction of a new ZOUnd.

Bellybelle : Cumulonimble Ep [Beats Me]

bellybellesml

Been really feeling beats from this artist from Portland, Oregon and so really pleased to be able to drop this EP from her on our label.

She covers a variety of different genres and most tracks I can’t really label, which is always a good thing. It’s just deep and atmospheric in parts with hints of ambient but always staying faithful to the dancefloor. She calls them “Beats Me” or “Cuddle Bass” and I lke that!

Here’s what she says about herself:

avatars-000014801233-a836wi-crop

Grew up in NYC. Moved all around the US. Now living in Portland, OR. I make music. I hope to make music that inspires you and makes you feel. Something. Anything. Don’t be afraid to feel. Ever.

Transcend.

Because Life is a celebration.

You can grab her EP in 320 MP3 format for free for a few days.

Alternatively you can purchase it in glorious Wav format.

Generation Bass presents: Bellybelle “Cumulonimble EP”

Being on the frontline of musical developments isn’t easy. It puts you in the awkward position of having to label an artist. To brand him or her in a specific style, or reference other acts that sound similar. That’s all fine and dandy if it’s clear, but in the grey areas of genres, beyond the outlines of what’s already there, you are going to have to make up new names for stuff. So to keep it simple for all of you, we thought we’d just stick to the term ‘Bass Music’ for this EP. Of course that’s nowhere near the right description for music this varied, but hey, it’s a starting point!

This is the low-end heavy universe of Bellybelle, who moved from NYC to the capital city of weird, Portland, Oregon. Those are the two worlds that are coming together on this collection of tracks as well. Big city sounds and down to earth beats collide with lush melodies and swirling synths with an almost psychedelic edge. Sometimes the tracks are close to skweee, sometimes they are almost footwork, but the combination of that sturdy low-end and the fizzing high is consistent within all four tracks.

‘Smolder’ kicks off with some solid 909/808 sounds and a wonky bass line that alternates to a steady throbbing pulse. After about a minute and a half the doomy, floating string synths come in and give the entire track a dark, menacing feel.

‘The Nature of Impossibility’ is something completely different, coming in on a hip hop tempo with lighter air and it’s almost chip tunes-like synths, this is a track that feels a lot more positive. When even bird sounds and sparkly synths come in half way, you know Bellybelle is giving you some breathing room before the stuttering footwork like snares and claps come in.

The third cut ‘The Nostalchemist’s Stone’ also starts off sounding light and almost like on of our favourite skweee artists: Coco Bryce. Never a bad thing! ‘The Nostalchemist’s Stone’ is as close to a ‘real’ skweee song as we are going to get on this EP and Bellybelle uses all the trademark elements to full effect, topping it off with a layer of synth strings for good measure.

The closing track ‘With-Out’ takes us back to the rapid-fire sounds of footwork and traps though, with phased and flanged oriental elements in the melody as well. The snare and hi-hat double tempo blasts keep the flow of the song going though and the riddim keeps pushing your neck muscles to bounce on.

Bellybelle says she makes because ‘Life is a celebration’, and although this EP has some joyous moments, it’s also a dark affair with interchanging bass lines and complex drum programming. The tension between those two is what makes great music. It’s also what makes Bellybelle’s “Cumulonimble EP” sound more urgent, more interesting than other producers in the wide range of bass music anno 2013!

CROOKED BOIS : CROOKED BOIS & MACHETES EP OUT NOW

crooked

This fabulous Zouk Bass Ep by 2 German guys, Lee Bass from Gato Preto and Chaikov who have come together to form the duo now known as “Crooked Bois”, is out now.

On their debut Zouk Bass EP they drop 3 banging tracks that stay faithful to the Tarraxinha riddims from Angola but they add their own European influence with a touch of UK Bass to the mix.

The EP contains 3 sublime tracks and most certainly one likely summer Anthem, the glorious and wonderful “INU” or “I Need You” taking the lead.  The EP exhibits all the characteristics that Buraka Som Sistema spoke about when they mentioned Zouk Bass, the elements of Angola, the Caribbean and UK bass.
