Like Merecumbe and cumbia master PACHO GALAN
He was the creator of a huge variety of rhythms and mixes of those, among which the merencumbé, chiquichá, tuqui- tuqui, mece – mece are specially remembered. Autodidactic, when he was young he learned to play the trumpet and the guitar in Barranquilla, city where he moved to after finishing his primary studies at Soledad, where he was born in 1906. When he was
thirty and until his death in Barranquilla in 1979, he did and composed all kinda folklore including porro, cumbia, gaita and merercumbe. His songs include Boquita Sala, Rio Y Mar, Fiesta de Cumbia, Cumbia Alegre and Ay Cosita Linda, which became one of his most famous after Nat King Cole recorded his own rendition of the song. If you like Old Skool Cumbia from Colombia, artists like the great Alfredo Guiterrez, then it’s also worthwhile checking out some other popular regional folk styles from Colombia including Vallenato (from Colombia’s Caribbean region) .
You can find and download some really tasty folkloric Cumbia and VallenatoRIGHT HERE
One of the most popular forms of CUMBIA is the bigband style stuff developed in the 50’s & 60’s. Of course this is very understandable, lush arrangements really add to the vibe and the percussionists and horn players go all out on this stuff. I’ve just found this cut at the AFRICOLOMBIA blog. Check it out!
