Ya Tosiba – Mollah The Machine & Remixes

This release was sent to me some time back by Center of the Universe, must have been close to 2 years ago and I just discovered that I never gave it any blog love, great music never dates and this deserves some shine, even if it’s belated.

You may have heard a couple of these tracks before if you’ve checked out my Arabtronix mixtapes.

This is Transnational Skweee much in the vein of our most recent Center of the Universe release “Never Mind the Boreks”.

Ya Tosiba is a Berlin-based duo producing bass-heavy riddims with energetic female vocals. On the mic we have Zuzu Zakaria, the versatile singer who uses mainly found, historical lyrics in her mother tongue Azeri. On synths and drum machines we have Mesak. The head of the fantastic Harmönia label has his roots in Finland, he is one of the pioneers of Scandinavian Skweee music.

Azeri for those that don’t know is the mother tongue of Azerbaijanis or Azeris, also known as Azerbaijani Turks – a Turkic ethnic group living mainly in Iranian Azerbaijan and the independent Republic of Azerbaijan.

There’s a bunch of remixes too and here’s what the label said about these:

Ya Tosiba are a Berlin based band connecting raw, funky syn- thetic rhythms with female vocals. Mesak is one of the pioneers of the scandinavian music genre called Skweee. The energy of his beats fits perfectly to Zuzu’s vocals in her mother tongue Azeri.

In summer 2014, Ya Tosiba have released the single “Mollah The Machine” on Pingipung which quickly sold out. Today Pin- gipung present three remixes of German artists, two of which are also released on a 7inch vinyl.

RSS Disco remix Maşin by Ya Tosiba. The DJ and producer trio from Hamburg focus on the bassline and make the synth pads shimmer. The original Ya Tosiba song is about the sudden appearance of cars in the streets of Baku in the 80s. It’s a more than perfect cruising track now!

Patric Catani aka Candie Hank mixes a hilarious, bouncing version of Molla, paying tribute to Zuzu’s funky meykhana vo- cals. This remix perfectly captures the hilarious, crazy qualities of the original and turns them into something huge.

Schlammpeitziger, the Cologne based veteran of electronica, finally adds his melodic genius to the same track, Molla. As shown on his album “What’s Fruit” on Pingipung in autumn 2014, he is never tired of adding just one more harmony or note to his disco production. The result is as always very charming and unexpectedly danceable.

Sebastian Mullaert – A Strangely Isolated Place

Past few weeks been finding a lot of interesting DJ Mixes over any blindin’ tracks on soundclaart. This is a great one, moody, deep and very atmospheric.

Here’s what the Swedish producer/dj says:

n January I recorded a DJ mix for the great website “A Strangely Isolated Place” ( astrangelyisolatedplace.com ). The mix turned into a deep and emotional journey reaching from ambient to slow techno and electronica. If you’re up for a deep journey I highly recommend it … And as always; a lot of music from me in the mix; this time mostly Wa Wu We and Ooze music … Both released and unreleased.

Wish you a joyful journey,
Sebastian Mullaert

The Chillout Effect

troyboi cover

Not that i didn’t want to write anymore. I think i just needed time to find something appropriate to write about, something also suitable for you readers.

Luckily my SC and my mailbox got me a bunch of new interesting sounds. I hope you’ll love them, a couple of them are really surprising…

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/199729097″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

Why this mixtape ? You might feel disappointed by my choice. Lots of Brostep, poppy synths and female casual vocals. True. But there are a bunch of really acute great choices. I could write about the sounds without mentioning my source. So whatever we may think of this tape, San Francisco DJ and producer Illenium deserves to be rewarded for picking up and assembling these sounds.

In this tape you’ll find this rather amazing track by Troyboi, half of the very creative Londonian SoundSnobz duo. Difficult to find a category for their music, it’s something of their own.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/191348859″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

This track by Andru. deserves also some good attention.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/140782983″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

Ambient synths, fat kicks and ghostly vocals. The result is really appealing.

Also included in the mix, this track by Elènne feat. Mothica has the nice groovy seducing flavour represented by the Alt RnB trend. Downtempo with lots of sidechain compressing, beautiful vocals cutting through in the soundmix.

Elènne is a project created in 2013. The band (or solo artist) in based in Stuttgart in Germany.

All the sounds can be downloaded for free. I have to say it requires some efforts however, some of you will not take the step as you have most of times to follow the artists via Artist Intelligence Service (which i do not appreciate, even though it’s effective for the artists) or create a Dropbox account. It’s really up to you. It’s not bad to follow an artist that gave you something you like, maybe it’d had been more pleasant to do it without so much sollicitation…

S T Λ R B R E Λ D : Darkover EP

A very impressive maturity in concept and in sound from these 2 teenagers, 14 & 17 years old respectively outta of the Italian dance scene.

They have just released their EP and it’s a really incredible collage of atmosphere and sound taking in Ambient, DnB and Electronica. It really is hard to believe that guys as young as this have managed to create these phenomenal soundscapes. They spent a year working on these tunes and the concept is about an imaginary planet which has four moons (Idriel, Liriel, Kyrrdis and Mormallor).

Watch out for these boys:

Grab the EP from Bandcamp:

Desert Wave is an Arabic/Eastern themed concept which is both ambient and rave in equal measure.

It conceptualizes a hallucinogenic & psychedelic vibe where you can trip’ the **** out either in mellow mood at the Sand Dunes (dreaming your dreams) or more upbeat at the Light Fantastic, raving till dawn.

Part 1 – Trippin’ at the Sand Dunes:

A collage of cinematic, ambient & club sounds draw from music made by emerging artists from the Middle East, artists from the past, western artists with an interest in the Middle East, movie soundtracks, the deeply spiritual, video game composers and much, much more. Nestled amongst all of this is one of the world’s greatest ever rock bands but in this collection they are made to sound just as anonymous as many of the other artists they feel comfortable to sit with in the mix, truly hUMBled 🙂

DesertWave – Part 1 Trippin’ at the Sand Dunes (March 2015) by Dj Umb on Mixcloud

Part 2 – Trippin’ the Light Fantastic:

The higher octane side embraces psychedelic club sounds that take you on a shamanic journey that lilts you into a deep trance and draws from music on the leftfield of the dance world. Here you get the latest underground merging with some classic and relatively unknown material of the past and some real curveballs thrown in to add that unique experience from 60’s drone merchants, 70’s & 80’s Electronic pioneers, one of the 90’s biggest Electronic acts and also North African infused Krautrock and finishing with musicians in North Africa paying homage to a Rolling Stone.

DesertWave Part 2 – Trippin’ the Light Fantastic (March 2015) by Dj Umb on Mixcloud

Here’s some of the Artists on the mixes, which might come as a bit of a surprise to some of you:

Regarded as one of the greatest ever Krautrock albums, this debut release by German band Agitation Free saw them taking in the Middle Eastern vibes as far back as in 1972.   Heavily inspired by Egypt and full of “dueling guitars, spacy synth work, desert rhythms and taped sounds of dusky cities… adding depth and spice to the otherwise smooth, Teutonic grooves.”

This is one of the greatest ever albums in any genre and I would strongly reccommend that you buy the whole album.

The vibe of the track I used just fitted this whole concept in feel and atmosphere and it’s relative anonymity just added to its allure!

Another act from the 60’s who were hugely influential in both the Krautrock and Electronic worlds.  In 1983 though they released an album called “Hyperborea”.

“‘No Man’s Land’ was a tour de force of conception full of spirited North African pipe and drum inflections. Its oriental flavour was increased by the use of exceptionally crafted electronic sitar and tabla sounds. With its hazy Moroccan dance feel and use of additive and cyclical melodies ‘No Man’s Land’ was an entrancing nine minutes of luminous Dream music.”

The track I used just sets off the second ambient passage of Part 2 perfectly!

The sustained oriental drones in this epic track had to be included.

The track in the mix beautifully concludes the second ambient passage in Part 2 before the mix really starts to rise up a few gears with more dance oriented material.

Led Zeppelin are well known for their forays into Middle Eastern music with their world conquering “Kashmir” track and they have hinted at the Middle East in other tracks like “Friends”.  From the same album as Kashmir, I used a track that has all the eerie, transcendental atmospherics of the kind of vibe I wanted to create for the first mix  and I think it is snuck in there (in edited form) in completely mysterious and anonymous fashion.  If you didn’t know Led Zeppelin material, you couldn’t be blamed for not recognizing it was a tune from one of the world’s greatest ever rock bands.

No, it’s not “Galvanize”, a track that was based on “Just Tell Me the Truth” by Morocco’s Najaat Aatabou.  It was originally a big hit in Morocco in or about 1993 and was sampled by the Chemical Brothers in their worldwide hit “Galvanize” in 2005 which sold over one million singles.

I was lucky enough to be 1 of only 2 people ever to be granted permission to license this track for a compilation, my Experience Morocco comp.  The other being, PAUL BOWLES!!!!  Indeed the track on my & Paul Bowles’ compilations is only an MP3.  A WAV version does not exist.  Najaat had agreed to re-record the track for me at the time of my compilation but it didn’t happen in the end cause she suddenly wasn’t in the mood for it!!!!

The Chemical Brothers track that I have used in Part 2 came much later than Galvanize and it’s a heavy, Big Beat Floor Stomper of a Middle Eastern tinged track that has been grossly overlooked.  I hope more people find it now or pay more attention because of its inclusion in this mix.

Amongst all the big ass dudes in the mix, who are in the minority, there’s some equally enthralling little known guys like The Blue Lily Commission aka Steve Palmer from my neck of the woods.  He makes global music that also fuses synthesisers into the swirly mix and some of his tracks are an intoxicating brew like the one I used which is probably one of my favourite tracks over the 2 mixes.

Please check out his material, some of it is pretty mega:

What can you say about this man and that hasn’t been said before…..BLADERUNNER……!!!

I have used a few tracks, one from that soundtrack and a few from other albums and one that is not him but which might be mistaken for him.

He is the master at evoking future sounds and when those sounds have a Middle Eastern tinge, it’s better than sex!

Yellow One Second

Yello were one of the first Electronic acts that intrigued me and I’ve been a huge follower of them since they hooked me in. There’s a great Snake Charmer-esque track by them that I’ve included in this mix, it’s brilliant.

The Master Musicians of Jajouka

We were lucky enough to include a transcendental track by these legendary dudes on our Transnational Dubstep Compilation when they teamed up with Dub Gabriel and ex-Bauhaus & Love & Rockets bassist, David J.

“The Master Musicians of Joujouka are Jbala Sufi trance musicians most famous for their connections with the Beat Generation and the Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones.”

I’ve taken a track from their Sub Rosa release which is in the praise of the last coming of Brian Jones and it’s dead trippy – “brahim jones joujouka very stoned”!!

Stephane is a French composer of video game music and his Dune soundtrack is legendary.

The tracks here on Part 1 are renditions of the Dune soundtrack played through dunemidi.exe in DOSBox.

Another French Composer best known for working with Luc Besson.  He’s done some great soundtracks, many of which include arabic inspired sounds.

Other Artists

If you’re into the Arabic Undeground, you’ll know some of the other stuff by dudes like Professor Genius, Crackboy, Legowelt, Acid Arab, El Mahdy Jr and our Generation Bass dude C-Productions!

Love is a Mix_Tape : Love Underwater

underwater-gallery-1 Jason Taylor

Dusting off my old mixtapes i got my hand onto the first mix of my Love Underwater series
Experimenting slow-motioned sounds and #seapunk inspired tracks (when #seapunk was still an obscure chaos of juked r’n’b and future garage) i finally ended with something that really satisfied me.

From the backwash beating the cliff of a mysterious land to the tropical beaches of Brazil, there’s a bit of everything in it.

If you need some downtempo time and dream of what’s going to be your next holiday, this might be for you !

Available on mix.dj as usual (sorry not widget, but streaming from the website is super easy). Just follow the link :

Beat Garden Compilation 4 by Gergaz

beat garden 4

Gifted. This simple word sums up the amount of talent, energy of the artists who composed the tracks of this fourth compilation.

It’s not the first time we talk about Gergaz label, almost a year ago we presented FVLCRVM‘s Notch EP and the third Beat Garden compilation which was already impressive. This Slovakian label managed to gather excellent artists like Jimmy Pé, FVLCRVM, Floex and many others to give some of the best slo-motion, downtempo, abstract music. If you like sounds accurately worked on, wide ambient atmosphere and uplifting beats this comp as everything present on the label is for you.

And guess what, this comp comes as a pay-what-you-want download, so you have little excuse not to get it !

Sinerise : Calling

The brilliant Canadian producer Sinerise is back with a great EP of down tempo Garage with some remixes taking in lush atmospherics.

You can preview one of the tracks and grab the rest via her Bandcamp.

OVERTURE. Bound by growth, our third verse carries us lightly, with the wind.

ARIA. With open sails our humble producer & vocalist, SINERISE, introduces herself to the world with a visceral, brooding haze of downtempo garage. Layers of vocal harmony coalesce with driving low end as our hero’s debut single has her pushing forward, back to the wind.

CHORUS. Navigating uncertain waters, both SUBMERSE & Brooklyn trio ARCHIE PELAGO challenge the brewing storm, reinterpreting our hero’s account with a story entirely of their own respective design.

CODA. Limited to 200 press, the pink 10″ vinyl will available worldwide on 24 February 2015 but can be purchased in advance on Valentine’s Day, 14 February 2015, exclusively from this store.

Tipper – CoSM Ambient Set

The masterful Tipper who once got a bollocking in 1997 at the V Festival from The Prodigy’s stage manager, because the band couldn’t hear itself due to the excess volume emanating from Tipper’s soundsystem from his 1970s Dodge Challenger car which was fitted with 6 x18″ subwoofers and a Funktion-One mid/tops speaker unit.

Once upon a time Tipper also brilliantly mastered our Generation Bass Presents Transnational Dubstep Compilation, which was a huge coup for us.

He has just dropped this amazing Ambient set consisting of originals tracks and recorded at CoSM and featuring tracks spanning the last 15 years.

Knowa Lusion and The Human Experience : When Worlds Collide Free EP [Transnational Space Bass]

You should recall Knowa Lusion aka Knowone from the brilliant Transnational Dubstep Compilation we released a few years back with his Cumbia Dub contribution.

On this new EP he teams up with The Human Experience aka David Block and the 2 of them have been friends and collaborators for many years.

“When Worlds Collide” is a selection of their finest work together, bringing both of their styles and skills to bear, combining rhythms, instruments and sounds from around the world and beyond with some fresh tasty beats and bass. @Other Side of the Tracks” features Chicago’s legendary MC Zulu. “Chasing Thunder” features drums by world bass producer DrumSpyder.”

Really feeling the atmospherics on this release, Transnational sounds travelling into outer space.

“Lazer Dreams” is as its title suggests, a sonic emotional exploration into Dreamy Space Beats with a touch of Lazer Bass.

“The Other Side of the Tracks” features MC Zulu who is mentioned for the second time on the blog today. This time the pair go into Dub Reggae Glitch mode with Mc Zulu sounding like a RastafarI in Space!

On the third & title track, “When Worlds Collide”, the pair land on the moon and delve into more emotional Glitch Hop Beats.

The final track “Chasing Thunder” sees them incorporating Indian themes with Arabic Bellydance percussion by DrumSpyder in the context of Glitched Space Bass Beats.  My fave of the tracks!
