SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – DECEMBER

Artwork by Tropi Delia

So this is the last post from us for 2016 ! We believe 2016 was a very hard year for some but in general Cumbia has helped us through it and gave us that big smile we hope you are all having whilst reading this. Thank you so much for keeping this blog alive and generally giving us the love to carry on writing about this magical music.

THE SILLY TANG SELECTED

Kazike en Estado de Trance Mixtape 032 – Festival Nomade Colombia

To start my selection I have the pleasure and honour to present this absolute badman mix from a person that is very important to me! Yes: Kazike en Estado de Trance is his name and he is the person who taught me everything I know about classical vintage cumbia. A great person and also a great maestro. Here he presents to us a really well put together mix for the Colombian festival that is “Nomade” organised by Mr Toe. Enjoy!

La Orrorosa Feat. El Hijo De La Cumbia – Infeccion Tropikal

So now let’s get started with the cumbia punk, one of my favourite fusions within this musical scene. New track from La Orrorosa of the disc “infección tropical” with the participation of Emiliano Gomez (El Hijo de la Cumbia). The rhythm and vocals couldn’t go better together to be honest. Really powerful track which I recommend to any Cumbia-Punk lover.

Jota Karloza – Ugate Sooraj (SolSelectas)

So as I might have said before since I saw Barrio Lindo this summer I truly discovered a love for this downtempo minimal stuff and I have to say it is growing J On this particular track Jota Karloza brings us some deep ethnic vocals on a really rounded bassline. The label “Sol Selectas” always brings us the cream of the crop and on this one they have really upped the game once more. Recommended for any time spent on the beach or as my partner in crime would say in any hammock 😉

VIVOTROPICAL – Cumbia De Los Pajaritos (cover De Los Mirlos)

Who has seen “Stranger Things “? Well if you have, this is the Cumbia version of the synthesised soundtrack. Well not really as El Búho brought a version a while back. But you will see what I mean when you press play on this track. VIVOTROPICAL is a producer I have just discovered who seems very fluid and locked on his synth game! The beat is nice but very simple and lineal with this main guiro line, but the main work is in the composition and deepness of the effects. Brilliant vibes and I believe this has already reached our alien friends in outer space!

Metralleta De Oro – Doing Time (Sumohair Remix)

YES! It seems like Sumohair lives in a constant summer state, more productions he brings out, the more I need sun, cocktail and chilling L.A style. This refix of the classical “Sublime” track is all to love. Nicely made bassline rounding up some light drum breaks followed by some ragamuffin arrangements. What is there not to like about this eh? So go on if it is rainy or grey where you are close the curtains, get a cocktail and put volume on full blast!

Fokus – Amazonico

When Eastern Europe meets Colombian cumbia what does it give you, you might ask? Well I will reply with great joy: this is what it gives you. An absolute belter of a tune J a truly inspirational and nice friend has brought me this killer track a few weeks back and wow. He has also asked me to work on a colab with him so watch out in 2017 for the Fokus vs Silly tang stuff to appear. Coming back on this track with an amazing effort from a Jungle producer background and as always a superb construction with deep subs to get us jumping.

SCBdB – Jeden

So while we are in Eastern Europe I got sent this mix via soundcloud by this upcoming artist called “SCBdB” (be careful about the spelling he is meticulous) 😉 So this amazing journey within the deeper vibes of cumbia has totally rocked my world. On a different tip than the previous mix by KAzike, this takes us on a deeper more electro side of the spectrum. The great news is that you will be able to stream his first performance live on our first show of the radio via our: la Selva Radio J

Los Wemblers de Iquitos – Lamento del Yacuruna (Tribilin Sound Remix)

Back to basics children, back to basics. Every time I see a Tribilin Sound track come up I´m like a kid at Christmas, believe me. So when this appeared and I saw “Los Wemblers” and “Tribilin Sound” on this remix, every day is the 25th of December for me now. Really subtle as always but truly refined tune with this amazing guitar, that backs up the Wemblers. Some psychedelic notes in here and some really echoed out instruments: a perfect combination from the mighty Tribilin Sound aka Alvaro Ernesto.

Julio Inti – Cumbia Dub La Venenosa vol7

Here we have another fusion which I love within this Cumbia world, Dub and Cumbia mixed together in a superb mix brought to us by “Julio Inti”. As you may know this is an area of expertise for me and I have to say hats down to one of the best compiled mix of these two genres meeting each other. Run go tell your friends!

LolaManola – Psicosis Fem & Sziget Fest (presentación)

Here she is, our famous local from Madrid, “ Lola Manola”!! Very young on the capital´s scene, she has really made a great effort and impression on us. We have had the pleasure of hearing her a couple of times now and believe me she knows what she is doing. Here is a mixtape she brought us as promotion for the two nights she rocked in Madrid, “Psicosis tropical” and “Conspiraciones Tropicales”. Get your ears around it and it will make you digest a big New Year lunch or brock out to a pre-new year party J

Aslán Dub System feat. Jef Stott – Soñar (Global Barrio)

The label Global Barrio which is new to me has had an amazing impact bringing some quality music to our ears, thank you Aslan Dub. Trust me this compilation is pure gold! I have chosen this particular track to present it to you because as I said earlier Dub and Cumbia I just love it. But this is not any Dub, the production and slickness of these sounds are real soft and marvellous. Really great, great work thank you so much.

RCA & Tropikhongo – Delicia (Bleepolar Remix) (Regional Label)

Our friends from Regional never sleep, FACT. No, only kidding, but they are really active all the time which is a blessing for our scene. Here is a remixed Ep by RCA & Tropikhongo called Delicia. I chose this version because of its dancefloor potential. I can promise you that this track by the Colombian “Bleepolar” well mixed is a killer for the hips!!!

Turbo Sonidero Presenta: Kumbias Macabras en Acetato (Records)

To end my part of the selection for this year and this month who else than Turbo Sonidero! If you know how to get hold of these guys please contact me via “Silly Tang” as I have some projects but never managed to get in touch J To get back to this mix, it is as always very true and generous on the cumbia level. From the first tune you can hear the purity of the music that these boys bring. I´m a real big fan of this collective.

KAYGEE SELECTED:

Rio Mira – Adios Morena (AYA Records)

This was released just after our post last month and has been on repeat since then ! The original tune is simply fantastic, and is followed by 4 great remixes by Nicola Cruz, Kaleema & Chancha Via Cicuito, M.RUX, and Midnight Ravers. Adios Morena is the first single of Rio Mira’s forthcoming first album ‘Marimba del pacifico’ so make sure you keep en eye out!

Barrio Lindo & Wende Wen – El Humo del Fasito (Damas Gratis cover)

Stream: https://barriolindo.bandcamp.com/track/el-humo-del-fasito-damas-gratis-cover

Barrio Lindo teamed up with Wende Wen for a new ep, which includes this beautiful chilled out cover of Dama Gratis’ tune “El Humo del Fasito”.

Matanza & Oceanvs Orientalis – La Luna Y El Lobo (Jhon Montoya Expedition) (Shika Shika)

Waow waow & waow ! What a great journey !! I love the slow & minimal aspect of the original tune, but I must say Jhon Montoya absolutely nailed it with this remix. The progressiveness and atmospheric violin he adds is just perfect ! That’s another one that has been on repeat for the past month.

El Búho – Mañana En Tepoztlán (Pata De Perro Remix) (Global Barrio)

I’m a big fan of the band Pata de Perro and a huge El Búho fan, so this could only be a winner for me! They have added a proper live dubbed out groove to the original tune and it sounds great! As mentioned above by the Silly Tang, this tune is part of an amazing compilation, Global Barrio’s Vol. 1, so make sure you check out the whole thing.

Mercedes Nasta – Paricutín (El Búho Edit)

The man never stops and it’s becoming a monthly tradition to post about his new tunes and edits, with this one going out to Mercedes Nasta. He’s done it again and manages to take us on a wonderful journey into his world accompanied by Mercedes Nasta’s lovely soothing voice.

LEDA Edits Vol.1 (Fertil Discos & Folcore)

We mentioned their campaign last month and here are the first two versions of this incredible forthcoming double-vynil, which will also include great artists like Chancha Via Circuito, Tremor, Tonolec, Intiche, King Coya, Soema Montenegro, Miriam Garcia and Doma Tornados, among others. For now, here is El Remolon’s deep bass driven remix, and a wicked progressive edit by Barda. You can still support the campaign on: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/el-camino-de-leda-compiling-leda-valladares-music#/

Bomba Estéreo – Raíz (Nicola Cruz Remix)

This is an absolute beauty of a tune! Nicola Cruz just landed! He brings so much texture and depth to the remix, incorporating Liliana Saumet’s voice perfectly ! It’s part of Bomba Estereo’s brand new ‘Amanecer Remixed’ album so get on it while it’s hot !

Señor Chancho Meets El Buga – Conga Dub (Shango Records)

Fresh sounds straight out of Shango Record’s oven with this banger by Señor Chancho & El Buga. Pure dubby tropical sounds with wicked flutes and synths to groove up the whole thing, without forgetting a fat beat and a fat bassline: I love it ! This tune is part of the ‘Bora Bora’s Mist’ Compilation, which is full of other great tunes so make sure you check it out: http://www.junodownload.com/products/bora-boras-mist/3303520-02/

La Walichera – Sendero (King Coya Remix)

Out on La Walichera Remix Vol. 1, here’s King Coya’s cumbia bass remix of the tune Sendero. He brings an original intake to the tune, with very few drums and nearly no kicks but it works really well.

Eduardo Zambrano – Llamacornio (Edmoon Records)

Let’s travel to the Andes with Eduardo Zambrano’s new album. I had been waiting for this one, and it was definitely worth the wait. His music is hard to describe as it covers many genres whilst incorporating different influences, and that’s part of why I love it! He brings a potent electronic touch to the more traditional and emotional side of his tunes, switching from one rhythm to another so smoothly, and always progressing along the tune.

Lascivio Bohemia – La Cumbia Quitapenas

Yes yes and more yes ! Another great project by the above mentioned Eduardo Zambrano is Lascibio Bohemia, and it’s hot ! He goes back to the more traditional side of things on this one and brings to us this beauty, with heavy guiros and powerful flutes! It’s part of a new 3 track EP so hit play and enjoy the whole thing. “This is a tribute to Sixto Silgado, Paito & Los Gaiteros de Punta Brava, life was better after having seen them live”

VA Hystereofônica Vol. 1 (Tropical Twista Records – 2016)

Very happy to hear Tropical Twista’s first compilation entirely dedicated to female artists: “Here we have artists that come from different branches that ensnare the electronic Latin-American scene in the most variable sonic textures and beats per minute. There are twenty-two women involved in this project – and only women – , some already established and some new potencialities among them, gathered by Ágatha Barbosa (Cigarra) in a big net on the Hystereofônica project.”

The Nu LatAm Sound – Ecuador Episode 3 – The Andes Sounds (ZZK Films)

Here’s the third episode of ZZK’s series on new Latin American sounds, focusing this time on Ecuador and the Andes Sound. It’s always a pleasure to watch these episodes. Enjoy ! The fundraiser they had put in place to continue these audiovisual projects was reached so we can expect more to come 🙂

Festival Nomade 2017

For those of us who couldn’t go to this lovely festival in Colombia, here’s a little glimpse of what went on ! Festival Nomade has another editon coming up in Chile so keep an eye out !

Fania Presents: MANANA Cuba Festival

Great insight into the legendary Fania Records label and the recent Manana Festival which took place in Cuba not so long ago, bringing together both traditional and electronic worlds by including a fabulous list of bands and djs.

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA — OCTOBER

sex-sat-cumbia-dar-al-naim-2

Artwork by Dar Al Naim

So here we go for this month´s edition of Sexxy Saturday Cumbia. The autumn is always a prolific period for musical releases, and as you will see below, this time has not disappointed. Check out a fresh selection of cumbia inspired tunes below:

KAYGEE selected:

Frente Bolivarista Vol.4 – Nômades

Has Christmas arrived a few months early? Well it certainly looks like it. This compilation has come out straight from the woods, after another great Nomade gathering, which was held in Germany not so long ago. The track list is simply perfect and includes some of my favorite producers of the moment such as Pigmalião, Vruno, Matanza, Spaniol, Dandara, Kurup, El Remolon, Intiche, and many others that I had the pleasure of discovering.

“Nomade is a festival, music label and artist collective seeking new sound territories merging the contemporary to the ancestral Latin America folk.”

Hit play and enjoy the whole lot!

El Remolon – Senderos (Fertil Discos)

So here it is, El Remolon’s new album released a few weeks ago on Fertil Discos. From what I read on their website, this work seems to be a new step for him, taking a new direction, slightly more experimental than his usual banging digital cumbia. The variety of beats and influences found in this album is really interesting: “It travels across rhythms and formats: acid sounds, house reminiscent bases, trap, deep voices, autotune and synthesizers that could either come from a minimal track or a cumbia villera”. I really look forward to hearing these new beats live on a big soundsystem.

PrΛ.Λ.H – Chamada Remixes (Nomade Records)

What a release! I must say I was already a huge fan of the original mix, so hearing so many new versions in the hands of Vruno, Pigmalião, RLHBSLCN, Dandara, Steffen Kirchhoff, Trippin Jaguar and Ninze was just one big auditory orgasm. They have all stayed quite close to the original vibe and structure of the tune, whilst adding their delightful touch to it, which brings them all together in one beautiful EP full of organic & deep sounds, and electronic layers thus creating new textures for our pleasure; and the good news is that their will be more similar projects to come.

P.r.Λ.Λ.H ~ Chamada (Jota Karloza remix)

I don’t really know why this one wasn’t released on the above mentioned EP but it definitely deserves a good listen. Jota Karloza is on my radar these days and has been coming up with some absolute gems. His remix is simply beautiful, with new crunchy details appearing here and there, enhancing his vision of the whole thing; he has also kept the original feeling and progression of the tune, and it works really well.

El Buga – Mini Conga Remixes (Regional Label)

Another remix EP was released on the all mighty Regional Label, including 6

great remixes by Larry SKG, DJ Nirso, VSKA, Mambisa, Bagre and Dúli. They are all really good in different ways, even though they all used the main flute and congas in similar ways to the original; but I must say I have a little ‘penchant’ for Dúli’s spaced out version.

I’m really enjoying the amount of remixes coming out recently, from all over the place; a proof of the constant exchange and will to share, explore and develop new ideas together.

coss – Nagual (El Búho Remix)

“Please enjoy this lovely collection of colourful music gems and take part of this journey thru time and space, silence and recreation.”

El Búho strikes again! I didn’t know the original tune, or any of the other 5 producers involved in this remix EP, but as always, El Búho has hit the spot! He always manages to create his own textures, taking you on a journey into his world. I love it.

Xique Xique – Xaxoeira (Nicola Cruz Remix) (Magic Movement)

It must be the month of remixes or something because loads are coming out from all over the place, and another great one has just landed! I loved the original tune and I must say that hearing the much-loved Nicola Cruz’s remix of it put a big smile on my face. It’s a really nice 4/4 progressive beat which slowly, but surely, gets you grooving, and builds up really well to a lovely 6 minute journey.

Universildo – Pru Etnico (Shika Shika)

Shika Shika is one of the labels of the moment, releasing beautiful journeys from all around the globe. This tune is part of “Botanas II” EP by Universildo, which if I understood correctly was made in collaboration with Chancha Via Circuito. I didn’t know anything about this project but loved it straight away and really look forward to hear more from where that came from. It feels like a deep shamanic dream into their worlds.

RAYADOR – Esquinas (WIP)

El Rayador is back! I hadn’t heard anything from him in a while and was really pleasantly surprised to hear this tune. A banging cumbia beat with a hint of hip hop and a fat bassline to get the groove going. Straight from Cordoba in Argentina, keep an eye out for this guy.

Nicolas Jaar – No (Other People)

https://soundcloud.com/ilttcom/nicolas-jaar-no

So here it is, a cumbia beat in a Nicola Jaar album (out now on his new album ‘Sirens’). This had to happen; it’s probably his Chilean roots slowly coming back to him. I must admit that I wasn’t totally convinced when I first heard it, but I think it’s what we call a ‘grower’. The more you listen to it, the more you get it, and the more you love it ! I heard Jin Yerei drop it in one of his sets the other day in Madrid and that’s when I realized what a good tune it was.

Kumbia Queers – Una, Dos, Ultraviolenta

(Cover de Los Violadores)

After seeing them in what was probably one of the best cumbia gigs I’ve seen recently, I was happy to hear a new cover from the Kumbia Queers. The energy they have is impressive, and the fusion of genres they manage to create is just amazing: proper tropical punk business.

Izem – Hafa (Soundway Records)

For all the Izem fans out there you will be happy to know that his beautiful album ‘Hafa’ is now being released by Soundway Records ON VYNIL!!! And to celebrate the occasion, here’s a little freeby from them. You can order the vinyl directly from:

https://www.soundwayrecords.com/Shop/DownloadDetails?rid=SWR_RE_115

Lascivio Bohemia – Nos faltan 43

Many of you will remember the horrible disappearance of 43 students in Mexico about two years ago; a tragedy which is unfortunately not unusual over there. Lascivio Bohemia has decided to commemorate the event trough this tune and video. “No more state crimes in any country of the world”.

Download full EP at: https://lasciviobohemia.bandcamp.com/album/nos-faltan-43

Tremenda Jauría – Con tol deskaro

Straight from Madrid, these Kumbiaton lovers have been rinsing dancefloors and festivals all around Spain for the past few months, with a touch of punk attitude and a hint of autotune, which actually works really well! If you don’t know them get involved, even though I must say that the real effect of this band really comes out during their concerts.

El Camino de Leda: Recopilando a Leda Valladares (Fertil Discos // Folcore)

Some great campaigns are seeing the light these days and this is one of them. Fertil Discos & Folcore are teaming up for a tribute to the Argentine singer Leda Valladares’ works by working on vinyl release with works from Chancha Via Circuito , El Remolón , TREMOR , King Coya , Soema Montenegro , Miriam García , Paloma del Cerro , Barda , San Ignacio, SidiRum , INTICHE , Doma Tornados , Uji , Celeste Y Las Mil Jarillas, Camanchaca , Pol Nada , Juan Sorrentino , El Pastiche , Mutienigga, and Qechuaboi. I’m really happy to see more and more vinyls appearing in this scene. I won’t say anymore, apart from the fact that I really hope they reach their goal for us to hear the final result very quickly. Find all the info you need about this campaign on: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/el-camino-de-leda-compiling-leda-valladares-music#/

ZZK Films Crowdfunding 2016

Here’s another really interesting campaign to support. Also from Argentina, the ZZK family wishes to continue spreading their love for the Latin American culture but this time under a visual format. I mentioned their first documentary a few months ago on this blog, and really like the idea of seeing more of them, and getting more insight into this scene which we’re currently bathing in.

Support the campaign on: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bring-compelling-latam-stories-to-world-with-zzk-music-films#/

La Cumbia del Magic Conch Spell – Fanfare Concha Mama

I don’t really know what to say on this one, the video is so…..original.

Hit play and enjoy !

Like every month, on top of the incredible amount of releases we have the pleasure of sharing with you guys, here are some mixtapes for you to enjoy:

MATANZA – R.A.Z.A.

JULIO INTI – Sarradinha Parisina Brazilucinado

SILLY TANG Selected:

Los Mexaterrestres – Kumbia Galáctica (ft.DucNoize x Fricci)

Here we go for this month´s selection ! Very exciting time for all cumbieros as the September low has passed, and now we can start creating and getting used to our winter on this side of the globe.

This first track is from Los Mexaterrestres from their album called Kumbia Galactica ! great algum which as the name say covers a very deep spaceship type of cumbia and lyrics ! I personally love the effects and rapping over the rhythms, the heavy kicks on there with the little flute added towards the end to give it a special finish. Great job !

SAN PAOLO – Mágico González – ░░ ▀▀ ░░ тємplо░░ ▀▀ ░░

Our Madrid loco, very crazy and very sexy Magico Gonzales comes at us with this hybrid of a track. Very different from his latest work he takes us on a ride through various breaks, trap, reggeaton all followed by this Indian guitar chord. The bassline of this track is to watch out for as it is very stinky indeed. Magico Gonzales once again, coming with surreal material – music and video. Great work from this locooooooo!

Kumbia Boruka ft. Celso Piña – El Porro Magangueleño

So here we go up a level in my eyes as this is a track by a band I have been championing for a while, featuring the all-time master who is Celso Piña. I personally absolutely love this song. It has all the best components you would want in the perfect cumbia track. AMAZING instrumental as always from Kumbia Boruka and really deep, heart felt vocals. I cannot insist enough that if you have the pleasure to have a visit from Kumbia Boruka in your town go and see them, they are to Europe for me the essence of the cumbia culture and sound.

América afroindígena – Yuka – Las pilanderas (sesión en vivo)

To stay in this kind of acoustic and general rooted cumbia vibe here is a live recorded version of Yuka and a track called Las Pilanderas. I have posted about this label before, they are doing some great work putting out these raw recordings and sharing this original sound so we can really feel like we’re in the middle of the amazon. Please go and check them out, give them a like and a helping hand as we need more projects such as this one to keep this sound truly living on.

Vermilion Bird – Cumbia Mala (Wile Out)

So now we have been through the less electronic side of cumbia for this month, lets go deep and get ravey! Here we have a very dark tune by the Argentinian born, New York based producer Vermilion Bird. A dedicated member of New York’s global bass family, she comes at us with some nasty, moody cumbia, released via the While Out label. The title says it all really “Cumbia Mala,” evil cumbia. The production on this one is so deep. Lots of wicked bassline swaps and rhythm changes. I love the panning work and the horns really makes the tune sound vicious. Love it !

Niño Virtual – La barata fue de Elotes

You want to go in this month ¿ Really in ¿ Well go run tell your friend we have a new killer on the scene ! Niño Virtual with this killer track: La Barata fue de Elotes. What can i say this track combines heavy as bassline with heavy lineal breaks which keeps it Wells tructured and mental changes. I´m not sure how I have never come across this producer but trust me this is fire! The song makes me feel like ants are crawling all over me but in a good way J

STACKED – Rocky Wellstack x MAKI – Hechizo [ADE SPECIAL]

Now we’re all in, we can go further and keep on raving hard ! ha ! This is an instant hit. I know it is not totally cumbia and it has very heavy Moombathon influences but the original sample and for me the best parts of this tune are the cumbia instrumentals and cumbia beats. Then saying this the whole production on this is off the hook. These kicks and highs are just lush and well the vocal instrumental absolute killers when it comes to make you bum shake!

EL Barba Dub – “F…- .. N “

Ok on this track I have to admit as an English speaker first the title shocked me a bit and I didn’t want to post anything related to the bad word 😉

Saying this I know the man having worked on projects with him and I know how South American people say this word. No racism involved and in this particular tune it is actually based on humour. I don’t know if you have seen the videos shared by this dwarf who so badly wants to be a black person? (if not check them out,. Hilarious) Well this track is dedicated to that fella. You can diefenetly recognize the production from El Barba those breaks and this particular instrument he loves so much. Really nice and humoristic tune hermano J

COCONUTAH Selected:

NEGRO DUB – SNAPCHAT CHAT

This is a fun electro cumbia tune from Negro Dub. A sweet build up based around a high pitched up vocal leads to a funky drop where some amazing swirly synths and pads combine with a rolling, percussive cumbia beat to create a dancefloor smasher. Undoubtedly a great option for warming up the club!

Shushupe – Semarang (Tribilin Sound Remix)

Tribilin sound presents a new remix of a Shushupe tune, a heavy bass roller with a Indian atmosphere. Slow paced but with a huge sound, this is sound system cumbia. Eery atmospheres and hindu flutes create a dense, almost claustrophobic feeling, and round off the whole. Love it!

Orihuela M.S.S. – Esta Madre No Tiene Nombre Pero Se Baila Bien

We only just missed this one last month, so here it is! Stomping Mexican cumbia can be crazy, with a fine example here by Orihuela M.S.S . This track is relentless as it never stops growing, and the acid synths are absolutely rinsing! The drums are particularly great and have loads of wicked glitch / reverby FX. Check it out!

Orihuela M.S.S – 24 años de decepciones

I just couldn’t resist publishing this second belter from Orihuela M.S.S, as this is another journey of its own kind. Described as Cumbia Digital Acida, this will hit the dancefloor hard. As usual in his productions, synths are very present and always have awesome, intricate variations.

Bosq y La Candela All-Stars – Ron Blanco Con Coco ft. Luis De la Rosa Solá

Not strictly Cumbia per se, I still wanted to present part of Bosq´s new projects with La Candela All-stars. Described as Reggae salsa, this is a funky number with a great vocal “featuring the immensely talented lead singer of Orquesta Macabeo” and some beautiful instruments in the background!

Dj Brian Lopez – Dance With The Devil (Cumbia Remix)

https://soundcloud.com/djbryandallas/dance-with-the-devil-cumbia-remix

And here we continue with the Mexican sonidero vibes, with some satanic cumbia! Its name says it all; this tune will turn you into a devil worshipper. Dance with the devil!

Erick Jaimez – El Cumbiambero LP

Here is a new Cumbia Lp by Mexican tropical master Erick Jaimez. It has a very Sonidero, rebajado feel all around but covers a variety of styles, from pure cumbialist, instrumental versions, to more minimalist, heavier, trappy styles. There are thirteen tunes so definitely something for everyone over the album. Boom ting!

Loko Bono Ft. Acapulco Zombie – (%_!_¨¨¨_779= Deep Latino $$HIT

https://soundcloud.com/acapulco_zombie/loko-bono-ft-acapulco-zombie-779-deep-latino-hit-c8_0

And another Mexican banger to end this month´s selection! Here is Loko Bono featuring Acapulco Zombie with an atmospheric, hip hop inspired track.

We hope you have enjoyed this month´s selection!

See you very soon for some more crazy cumbia action.

 Kaygee selected:

V/A – Entre Tiempo Y Espacio (Tropical Twista Records – 2016)

WAOW ! I wouldn’t know where to start with this one. There are loads of amazing compilations coming out these days, but this one hits the spot on the variety of artists and diversity of sounds & rhythms it offers: “As a whole, the album offers an exquisite journey into the mysteries of time and space and reflects a Latin America that is united through a new musical scene that is strong, independent, transcending geographical barriers, and creating new connections.”

Make sure you listen to the while thing, it’s full of gems, as mentioned by the Silly Tang further below.

YEAHMAN! – Minca

Confluencias I: Selva (Shika Shika)

This track is just bangin’. It has it all: a sick beat, a wicked groove, and most of all, a set of beautiful and pure sounding instruments. I’m not sure how they were recorded or sampled or whatever, but they sound great. YEAHMAN is on my hotlist these days; he’s releasing some great tunes. Keep an eye out for the man !

This tune deserves its place in this great compilation, brought to us by Shika Shika. I love that they always find new artists from around the globe; this compilation has indeed brought to my attention many new ones who I had never heard of and who produce some serious tunes !!

GUAZÚ – El Club del Condor

Confluencias II: Montaña (Shika Shika)

And if one wasn’t enough, here’s another set of tracks for our delight from Shika Shika, with the second part of ‘Confluencias’. Another great selection for us to enjoy, with tunes from Nicola Cruz, Spaniol, Quixosis, amongst others; but there’s one that stuck out for me every time I listen to it. He was a stranger for me: Guazu. His tune is so deep, powerful, with a hint of darkness, slowly progressing towards the top of that mountain ! I love it !

Urban Cosmonaut Tales (Urban Cosmonaut Radio)

It’s like Christmas has come early, and it’s snowing tunes and compilations in August ! It’s amazing ! They are all so diverse, and bring to us so many new artists who deserve to be heard around the planet; as seen in Coconutah’s selection further below.

Here, Urban Cosmonaut Tales travels through the tropical diversity of this globe, stopping in different electronic environments. I strongly recommend you take the time to enjoy all of the tunes. They are all very different and come together very nicely in this compilation. The tune ‘Uwi’ by Geju, Betelgeize & J.O. seems perfect to close the whole thing!

ElPeche – Calorzito (Tropikalia Vol.1) (University of Tropical Sound)

Who said compilation ? Here’s another one fresh on the block, straight from the University of Tropical Sound, who we had the pleasure to see play and meet @Tropical Camp. Here’s another great variety of artists, including our beloved Silly Tang and 2G1B and many other ones who we often mention on this blog, as well as this banger by ElPeche. I’d heard this accordion before and really love how he’s used it here, with that groovy guitar and a fat bassline! Wicked !

And if you’re in for a more Shamanic type of experience, check out El Camo’s Ritual.

Contoneo Tropical 2016 (Taciano Records)

conteneo tropical

Stream/Download: https://tacianorecords.bandcamp.com/album/contoneo-tropical

And here’s another compilation that’s well worth a listen. It has a totally different approach to the sounds than the ones mentioned above and definitely has some heavy dancefloor bangers in there!

Vruno – Oxytocin (AKUMANDRA)

Bim ! Vruno’s in the place ! I adore his productions, and particularly enjoy the slow and progressive touch he has! A deep techno beet & bassline to get you going and allow all the rest to slowly build around you. You can really feel how this story needs these 8 minutes to be fully enjoyed & completed ! Big ups !

Make sure you check out the label AKUMANDRA ! Proper deep world business to make you travel through their amazing releases.

Intiche – Ulmos

intiche

Stream/Purchase: http://intiche.bandcamp.com/album/ulmos

This beauty also came out at the end of last month. A wonderful musical journey signed by Intiche. Another slow & progressive approach which always works on me, leaving time to appreciate the whole atmosphere and thickness of the tune, catching every little sound & detail right into the jungle.

With so much music for our ears, here are a few good videos to check out:

The Nu LatAm Sound – Ecuador Episode 1 – The Amazon Voices (ZZK Films)

I was really looking forward to this coming out and really enjoyed the watch. It gives us a great insight into the Ecuatorian artists, influence, roots, environments present in todays scene, and how they are reviving and merging with ancestral sounds. This will be a great set of episodes to watch.

Animal Chuki – Luna (Radio Gladys Palmera)

During their stay in Madrid for Guacamayo Tropical’s event, Animal Chuki recorded this live version of one of their new tunes @ Radio Gladys Palmera. Really nice chilled vibe on this one !

Sesiones Bajo Tierra – QUIXOSIS – “Cordillera” (Episodio2)

Episode 2 of ‘Sesiones Bajo Tierra’ brings to us Quixosis performing ‘Cordillera’ live. I think we just went one floor deeper; I love it !

Lulacruza – Gente Mariposa @ Szimpla Kert

While we’re on the live performance, you can enjoy Lulacruza’s performance of ‘Gente Mariposa’ @ Szimpla Kert in Budapest. Her voice is beautiful; I really hope to see her live soon.

Nomad Frequencies – Teaser Medley 2016

Here’s a wicked project we had the pleasure of seeing live a few months ago in France, a French live duo between machines & instruments, who go from Cumbia to world techno/trance with a hint of Balkan d&b. Great live show !!

Mataga – Mixtape · Viveylate Radio 1×012

Another interesting journey but this time in a flight straight to Brazil with Mataga, presented to us by Viveylate Radio.

And like every month, on top of all these tunes, compilations, videos, projects, which I mentioned above, there are always some delightful mixtapes to be enjoyed, here are some of them:

San Ignacio \IST 045 (Casa Caos)

YEAHMAN! InterCities # 5 (Summer Moments MixTape)

Sonikgroove World Electronica Mixtape

Griffin Crafts – Flavour of The Month -Julio (Shika Shika)

Silly Tang Selected

Kumbiamberos Internacionales – El Siguiente Nivel Vol. 12

This month of August is hot, festive and full of vibes as always! To start my selection this month I wanted to forward this compilation full of great artists. Some of my favourites of course; Turbo Sonidero, Dj Classic y mas! A very good selection out of the true cumbia family from, Mexico, Argentina and USA. All in all, very classic and unmissable with a twist of craziness!

Señor Chancho – Bacallao (Tropical Twista Records)

On this original killer track was the all mighty Bacallao. And then, I came across this remix with the all-around Cumbia Rastafari lol Señor Chancho ! The production of Señor Chancho, one half of the Regional label, is always getting much tighter and solid by the months. This unreal and futuristic beat must hit all the chill outs this summer to get people vaping and getting some cocktails down! So fresh it reminds me of a blend between a strawberry mojito and a lime ice cream 😉

Bigote – Tabaco (Tropical Twista Records)

The grime village king is back for more as always ! On this tip he hits a very deep note with these succulent vocals and this low deep bass. In some notes of this tracks it reminds me of a Mala (DMZ) production because of its atmos and all around production deepness. Bigote is part of the might label Caballito but this has been released on another label called Twista Records. Get the towel out and go run to the beach to stick this on your mp3 players 😉

Unqa – Panoja De Quinua

Now this is what I called a discovery ! The first kick and low bass reminds you of a funky disco tune . Then, Unqa follows with some lovely dubby effects and tribal percussions. On a very minimal tip, this tune is actually full of suprises. Love the flute with a slight effect added on and the real groovy bassline. Great song once again to listen once your sat in your hammock enjoying a nice beer.

VA – Y Desde Monterrey (Rebajado Mx)

Now now now J Another compilation in one month – what a month ey ! This time around it is the Mexican collective Rebajado Mix which are bringing this delight full of Cumbias Rebajadas. The history of this genre is funny and interesting you should check it out if you don’t know it. Rebajado mix have managed to combine such a list of wicked producers under one roof. Producers such as Hydro Selekter – Hnry – Freebot. Really great work from all producers and a superb compilation from it !

El Buga – Mini Conga (Señor Chancho Remix)

Now it seems like Señor Chancho is in full form at the moment. Inspiration and remixes and its best, two great artists from the tropical scene in one superb track. Really groovy bassline with some hits of marimba and flutes works a treat on this one. As I said before it seems like Señor Chancho is full of love for the dub these days and that shows in his production. Really recommended track and also free to grab so go run tell your friends, and keep an eye out for more remixes of ‘Mini Conga’ to follow on Regional

Chakruna – Sabor a Selva ([email protected])

Chakruna is a producer I had never heard of if i´m honest but I came across this video the other week and it totally gripped me. I love the combination first of all of old and new technologies. Transmitted here is an old cumbia song remixed via Maschine MPC type and added effects on top of that. All manual control, and lovely composition of breaks. I´m sure we will see more from this guy.

To end this month’s selection I would like to add some info on where to grab your musical hits at festivals this summer. Here is a list of festivals where you will definitely have a good dance:

Tropical CampIbogaGoulashBalterVisual BrazilFusionBoomtownSecret Garden Party

Coconutah selected:

Sistema Beat Andino – Cumbia Explosiva remixes (Regional Label)

Regional label is an amazing outlet and an even better inspiration for many artists and music lovers. Here they do not disappoint; Sistema Beat Andino open the ball with Cumbia Explosiva, a brooding cumbia dub riddim that takes no prisoners. The torrent of remixes that follow are very diverse , going all the way from sonidero vibes with Sonido Mamalon´s version, to a more trappy version courtesy of Mister teen, to a full steppa dub experience thanks to Loko Bono. Small Fall & Owem G, Barda, El Buga, and Lascivio Bohemia round off the compilation. Big up to all involved for this great EP!

Dr. Dre’s Cumbias (Sumohair Remixes) (Kumbale)

Sumohair returns on German label Kumbale with some two chronic tunes that will take you back, back, back…. Featuring legendary Dr Dre, these are dynamic cumbialistic riddims that are full of chops, changes, and funny little edits.

Nato – Babiley (Urban Cosmonaut Tales)

“Bed time stories you tell to a younger generation”, Urban cosmonaut radio presents a compilation of down tempo, melodic tunes. Here, we focus on Babiley by Nato. Charango´s combine with spacy synths, crazy oriental vocals and groovy percussion to great effect. Very relaxing!

G-Sound – Ritmo Universal Feat. Los Master Plus (Rebajada)

Cumbia dub vibes on show from G-sound with Ritmo Universal, featuring los Master plus with awesome rebajado vocals. G-sound´s signature sound is present with layers of catchy synths and a ton of trippy FX. The rhythm is slow and langorous while the bassline has a deep, gravely touch. Great summer tune.

Tribilin Sound X E.Vax – Hijas (Terror Negro Records)

Tribilin sound is ever-present on our monthly cumbia blogs, and for good reason; new tracks are frequent and always bring heavy, heavy vibes! This is no different, as this collaboration with E. Vax takes us to the very core of spacy electro-cumbia. Check it out!

Motin – Salida Del Sol

Here are some techno-cumbia vibes to begin rounding off this month´s selection; Motin presents Temazcal EP. This is a journey through electro Andean sounds. Harmonious flute and string lines capture the listener´s attention, while a heavy techno beat is accompanied by some cumbialistic Guiros and percussions. Both tunes are a must-hear!

Selector Guita – Business, Share Trades, Easy Money

And an added bonus to finish this summer edition of Sexxy Saturday Cumbia: worldwide, heavy-hitting money maker Selector Guitar presents ‘Business, share trades, easy money’. A very futuristic, capitalism driven sound, this is not traditional electro-cumbia but is an interesting blend between juke, trap, and guiro-madness. Funny vocals add a Guita touch to uplifting stabs and accordion melodies.

We hope you enjoyed this month´s tropical summer selection! See you next month for more stomping, psychedelic cumbia.

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA WITH LA SELVA – HERE WE GO WITH THE MARCH EDITION

As usual, it is a pleasure to present March´s edition of Sexxy Saturday Cumbia. An incredible variety of incarnations of cumbia await below – cumbialistic sounds abound this month, from the most natural to the strangest you will hear in a while, organic bands as well as dirty electronic beats. It´s a true delight to realise that we keep discovering new names and new influences, and that cumbia keeps on surprising us week after week.

 Silly Tang selected:

Julio Inti – Afrolatinbass Venenosa Vol6

I wanted to start my monthly selection with an amazing selection from Julio Inti. A big producer from Paris who has been bringing real freshness to the scene. This mix boasts a good range of new and old sounds, and especially contains a track from my hermano Coconutah!

Culemba – Nunca Pares De Explorar

https://soundcloud.com/sonido-fronterizo/culemba-dub

Here we have an AMAZING new project coming out of Spain which my good mate Sr Luftansa is part of. A group called Culemba, composed of instrument players and digital beat makers. The sound coming out from this group for me is a real grower! They really take so many influences I love it. From dubby beginnings with a hint of chicha guitar and a groovy bassline. Amazing song, big ups familia!

Coconutah – No No No Remix

Here it is! I have been hearing this badboy tune for sound checks and mixdown checks but it has finally arrived here and as a free download! My selvatic brother the all mighty Coconutah drops this killer dancefloor tune juste as the sun starts to shine here in Madrid. What to say very addictive sample to start with, a very complex drum pattern which could remind us of some of the trap snares coming out these days, and sublime horns as backing. Big up my main man!

KayGee – Tropical Sucio mix

https://soundcloud.com/kaygee_laselva/tropical-sucio-en-la-selva-radioshow-23-02-2016

This is the dark side of my second main man and all round player Kaygee man dem ! This fine mix was recorded in our studio for a live session. I really dig the futuristic touch that runs through this selection. I think Kaygee has gone far, the mix is well designed and titghly assembled. I personally love Kaygee´s darker side !

A Toda Madre – Tumba (Caballito Netlabel)

Here we have it, the fine EP brought to us by caballito by the legendary Atodamadre ! Some very experimental tunes which have a balanced influence of tropical and cumbia – this could make any mental patient normal again ? I really dig how everytime the badman from Donostia looks to reach new heights and is not scared of breaking boundaries. This very dark and atmospheric tune could remind us of the beginnings of DMZ or NAFFI. Big ups pirata!

Nazar – Tyranny (Track Meet)

https://soundcloud.com/trackmeetdjcrew/nazar-tyranny

Now what do we have here? A cumbia hybrid brought to us by the very fine producer called Nazar, a track titled Tyranny. As you have probably noticed over the months, I love fusional music that brings essences of cumbia and other darker electronic music. This track is a HIT ! Some very acidy parts and a constant drum pattern followed by a hefty bassline. A delicious piece.

Grita – Drog 16 – Club Súper Sol Mixtapes

Mmmmmmezclada y editada en el estudio de Club Super Sol en Granada. This mixtape has the dark and obscure vibe that hits me deep within. It is a blend of cumbia, electro, reggaeton and porn, all in one to make you sweat, have sex or dry in the sunlight. Very very interesting selection coming at us from El Drog!

Los Gaiteros De San Jacinto – La Cumbia Es Pa’ Gozar

Mathias aka Galletas Calientes who is a legendary Dj and label owner from france but now residing in Colombia has brought us this magnificient piece of vinyl on Galletas Calientes his own label. Such a pure and original vintage cumbia sound, this is a piece of plastic which will go very fast so try and get your copy asap!!!

Tremenda Jauría – Esta noche

To finish my selection, I wanted to bring to your attention the band called Tremanda Jauria. They have been rocking Madrid and the whole of Spain, and I´m pretty sure they are about to rock a town very near you very soon! This clip is from their track called Esta noche, a pure cumbiadelic tune with gorgeous vocals and a really nice post production sound. Big up guys !

Kaygee selected:

Jin Yerei – Foráneo, Calido, Pasmoso (Fertil Discos)

I have slowly been discovering Jin Yerei’s sounds here and there, and just got completely englobed into them with this album, which came out as Fertil Discos’ fifth instalment. I love travelling through music and this has taken me straight from my desk in Madrid to an incredible journey through dense, atmospheric and mystical rainforest paths. All the sounds are so deep, and so well produced. It’s a real pleasure to listen to the entire album as a whole.

Rodrigo Gallardo – Agua De La Tierra (Pata De Perro Rmx)

I am a big fan of the original tune, and a big fan of Pata de Perro, so this was just perfect for me; Pata de Perro has made a wicked groovy and dubby version of it ! They have kept most of the actual tune and added their dubbed out touch and instruments to it and it works really well. I have seen a few videos of the band in Mexico and would really love to hear and see all this live. Make sure to check out their soundcloud page where you can find two other new tunes, as well as a great ‘Buenaventura Mixtape’ !

Lulacruza – Orcas Remixed Vol. 3 (Black Swan Sounds)

vol 3

http://music.lulacruza.com/album/orcas-remixed-vol-3

It’s becoming a habit and I love it: once a month for the past few months, we have been getting new remixes of Lulacruza’s Orcas album, and this month, they have done it again, with remixes from Desert Dwellers, San Ignacio, Brian Mayhall, and El Remolon. The diversity found in all these remixes is insane. I was actually surprised to see Desert Dwellers appear here, and was really happy when I heard their remix of Uno Resuena. Enjoy!

Lulacruza – Uno Resuena

And while we’re talking about Lulacruza, here’s a new video clip. This tune deserved it’s own video clip. Love it !

Duli – Litoral Ep (La Chimba Discos)

This was completely new to me and what a great surprise ! Andean Bass with heavy guiros, and even heavier kicks, in some kind of psychedelic digital chicha space machine. Take all that and add some fat basslines and you get it ! It’s amazing, and these synths are just banging ! And to top it up, you can enjoy a dembow remix by El Buga, as well as the Inti Kunza Tropical Austral Dub Remix.

History of Colour – Calidoso (Shika Shika)

We had the pleasure of enjoying El Buho and Barrio Lindo’s first collaboration in their project ‘History of Colour’ a few years back with their release on ZZK Records, and now they’re back with another EP, ‘Calidoso’, and it’s one beautiful journey “inspired by slow-dance and flitting between andean folk, marimba, electronica and organic sounds.” (Shika Shika). They have created a great project together, in which both of their sounds, vibes and production touches get together to create the unique atmosphere found in this EP.

The digital download is free but if you want to grab this release on Vynil, please support their campaign and reserve your advanced copy: https://qrates.com/artists/shika.shika/items/11661?show_complete=true#

And while we’re talking about Barrio Lindo, check out this video: “a visual representation” of his Kayak Break EP: https://vimeo.com/158534959

Magico Gonzalez – Pc Futbol (Caballito Netlabel)

Not much is known about Magico Gonzalez, but he has just landed on Caballito’s Netlabel with some heavy Chip Tune Cumbia Bass business ! The whole thing is really interesting, there’s no other way to put it: he mixes typical PC sounds with fat 8bit beats and electronic mayhem and it works! The whole Ep goes from cumbia to reggaeton, with a bit of tribal, merengue, and dubstep; but the guiro is always there !!!

Silly Tang Ft Marta Margaix – Cumbia De Calais (Migrant Beat Foundation)

This is our Silly Tang’s input to one hell of a compilation, which was released this month “to raise money and awareness for those in need who have been displaced by war and oppression in their own countries”.

I’m glad to see him throw the Cumbia into the compilation, with a nice deep & progressive approach to his beat! The vocal is perfect!

Silly Tang’s tune is the only Cumbia beat you’ll find on there but please make sure you check the whole compilation out: support the cause and enjoy a wide range of amazing tunes, going from dub to glitch-hop https://migrantbeatfoundation.bandcamp.com/

Sidi Wacho – Salam Wacho

Check them out ! A perfect blend between Cumbia, Balkan and Rap, even though they prefer to describe it as “a popular expression made in Lille (Fr) & Santiago (Cl) with committed texts which ‘sting’ and remind us that “La Lucha Sigue”.

They manage to blend all of the previously mentioned genres so well, and bring it all to life in this video, also promoting the release of their first album !

Having grown up in France and having seen the direction that part of the French music hip hop scene has been taking, I must say I’m really happy to see a French rapper involved in this project ! Saidou , Jeoffrey (MAP), Juanito Ayala, Boris Viande, DJ Antu, Fred “El Pulpo” Savinien are all involved in many other projects but this one is looking tasty !

Candeleros – Chicha y Wanton (Tierra Candela)

Another great band to keep an eye out for right now, and good friends of La Selva, are the Candeleros. Straight outta Madrid, they are ready and eager to make you dance. Here’s an extract from one of their last concerts in Madrid. This song in particular is some kind of journey from Woodstock to Beijing stopping through Colombia & Venezuela; it has it all !

Nicola Cruz – Prender El Alma (ZZK Records)

Enjoy this great psychedelic video of Nicola Cruz’s ‘Prender El Alma’. I’m sure most of you will have listened to this tune many times and will enjoy these visuals to enhance the journey into the andes.

And just in case you missed it, La Yegros’s album has just popped up ! King Coya’s production is really tight, as always ! These guys are going global, they’re spreading the tropical vibes everywhere, making many people aware that this scene actually exists https://www.soundwayrecords.com/Shop/DownloadDetails?rid=SWR_RE_99

Coconutah selected:

Aurita Castillo y su Conjunto – Chambacu (El Buho Rio Edit)

“a trip down a tropical river” sounds about right for this one of several of el Buho´s new edits. Tastefully revisited with his usual dubby touch, this one adds deep, hypnotic jungle atmospheres to the original, all while keeping the original vibes, melodies, and of course that unforgettable flute that doesn´t seem to ever get old.

Real Cumbia Activa (RCA) – La Cumbia De Reynaldo (Original Mix)

Another big dubby cumbia banger, this will go down as well on a sweaty dancefloor at 3:00 in the morning as it will to warm up a festival on the beach in the up and coming season. This is a true electronic cumbia beat and comes along with thumping bass and beats as well as some lovely trippy dubby sounds and fx. Great Style by RCA.

Camanchaca – TC2000 (Tribilin Sound Remix)

Tribilin Sound´s remix of TC2000 from his alter ego touches upon another style of digital cumbia. This is an electronic, techno infused beat from start to finish, and is one of these really progressive, slowly evolving, entrancing riddims. Big atmospheric pads combine with Tribilin´s rythmic guiros and percussions to great effect, taking the listener into a hypnotic roll.

Doña Chona (Los Tioz Edit) (Worldwide Mx)

Newly released on Worldwide from Monterrey, a label in full form at the moment. This is a heavy cumbiaton which starts with a stupendous build-up and drops into moombah cumbia mayhem. Dancefloor rinse out for sure.

Kuppo – Via Lactea (El Buga remix) (Shango Records)

Out on Shango Records, and “Electronic Afrotropicalismo” is what they stand for. It is certainly a catchy term and the music really doesn´t disappoint, in this case a remix by el Buga, “Via Lactea”, a Afro tropical cumbia that showcase some catchy african guitar riffs combined with afro-colombian beats, a great combo!

Xuxa Santamaria – Conquistador (Turbo Sonidero remix)

Big up to Turbo Sonidero for the weird and wonderful beats, in this a remix of “conquistador”. I love it when the guiros kick in, great laid back psychedelic spooky vibe with some brilliant mallet type percussion. The twisted vocals add to the tension and atmosphere, and some dark swirling synths and FX round the tune off. Good trip into the wilderness!

We hope you enjoy the selection and see you next month for some more CUUUUUmmmmbia!

Mega Mixtape Roundup

HolographicFoil

It’s high summer now. In the Netherlands we’re experiencing a heatwave as we speak, but the important thing is that summer is usually one of the most crucial periods that shape the course music will take that year. So what has caught our ears lately. I made a selection of mixtapes that show the energy that’s coming from the most exciting undergrounds rigth now.

1. Classical Trax & BREAD : The Mix

Forget about EDM, if you hadn’t already done that. ‘Trax club’ is officially the new centre of gravity of global underground sounds. I could (and soon will) write an entire post about this amazingly energetic scene and its relation to the expression of non-white LGBTQ identity. It’s a fascinating melting pot of the most extravagant house and bass music, both old and new, mixed with sounds out of the non-western undergrounds, often with as much as possible inclusion of the scenes behind these sounds. The result is a unique blend of grime, Jersey/Philly/Baltimore club, dancehall, reggaeton, baile funk, kuduro, gqom and more.

Classical Trax is the platform that manages to draw together the exciting undergrounds from London, Stockholm, Lisbon and Mexico City. This week they teamed up with the San Francisco based avant-garde club BREAD for a peek into the future of music for at least the second half of this decade and probably many more years to come..

The mixtape is a teaser for the club night hosted by Classical Trax in BREAD later this month, BE THERE!

https://soundcloud.com/classicaltrax/classical-trax-and-bread-the-mix

2. GIL : Desultory Mix

Via the Classical Trax scene I encountered the enigmatic but absolutely genius dj GIL, from Switzerland, who got discovered by Thump to release this mouth watering avant-garde baile-trap stomper for THUMP.

‘Desultory Mix’ shows, perhaps even better than the BREAD mix, the sound of the new generation of global club music. Less Jersey club and future grime in this one, here the focus is on dembow, bubbling and post-dancehall.

This mix is one of my absolute favourites of this year!

3. Santa Muerte : Mixpak FM 085

The avant-garde urban latin duo Santa Muerte has featured a several of times on our blog already and their name has been rising ever since. Just last week they featured on the influential next-generation-dancehall platform Mixpak‘s mixtape series Mixpak FM, bringing a fresh blend of the best from the underground hubs like NY, London and Lisbon.. from avant-garde reggaeton to kuduro and future grime!

4. NON Records : Death Drop From Heaven

NON Records is by far the most exciting project launched in 2015. NON is a new label and platform created by ANGEL-HO (Cape Town, South Africa), Nkisi (London, UK) and Chino Amobi (Richmond, USA), focusing on music coming from Africa and the African diaspora. Style wise it embodies the perfect fusion between the trax avant-garde and the fusion of the dark-alternative music undergrounds with urban and Afro-diasporic vibes.

Death Drop from heaven was their kickoff mixtape, showcasing the radically countercultural style they are pushing. Death Drop From Heaven is a gripping, politically conscious dystopian blend of dark ambient flavoured vogue, kuduro, afrobeat and gqom from exciting better and lesser known artists including Arca, GHE20G0TH1K legend Venus X and the South African avant-gardist Bogosi Sekhukhuni !

5. Venus X : i-DJ session

Venus XGHE20G0TH1K‘s influence on nightlife, music, fashion and culture over the last half decade can hardly be underestimated. After a temporary break to resist commercial attention and appropriation, her trailblazing events in New York are back. Vice’s cultural inspiration platform i-D invited her to host an i-DJ mixtape session and showcase the range of flavours and vibes to be found at GHE20G0TH1K nights and in the vibrant community, also very closely integrated with the trax scene, around them.

This vibrant mixtape is a rollercoaster ride that moves from flavours like ghetto house and vogue to kuduro, Chicago drill and dembow!

6. Joao Pavigo : MIX PUTARIA

The Brazilian futurist Joao Pavigo is the trax scene connection for baile funk. This brilliant mixtape shows the most exciting tracks where baile funk meets the avant garde flavours embodied by the undergrounds of London, Stockholm and Mexico City, even blending in some kuduro and 3ball towards the end!

https://soundcloud.com/joaopavigo/mix-putaria

7. DJ Fasta : The Fastape Volume 2

Then now some attention for the Dutch urban eclectic scene. I’ve been talking a lot about this movement in my pieces about the history of genres like bubbling and moombahton but the blogs never seem to give this stuff the credit it deserves. Let’s just get real about it. Most people who read blogs like this one still think that the whole idea of fusing urban-electronic beats from places like Angola, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Brazil was invented by these blogs. Which would be the same as crediting Daniel Haaksman for baile funk or Frederic Galleano for kuduro. Blending dance genres from Latin-Caribbean, African and Middle Eastern countries and combining them with flavours like hip-hop, RnB and house has been bread and butter in the Dutch urban club scene for decades. Long before anything like the blogosphere existed.

The different cultural backgrounds present in the Dutch cities have always brought about a blend of different styles, with bubbling, dancehall, kuduro, azonto and kizomba being the most important ones. Less baile funk, 3ball and cumbia yet, mainly because there aren’t that many Brazilian, Mexican or Argentinian youths living here, but I’m convinced these flavours too will get embraced at some point. The formula of Diplo and the whole Hollerboard leading up to Mad Decent is basically a weak American ripoff of this vibrant scene in the Netherlands. The sound has become more mainstream flavoured over the years but the ease with which genres are blended into one another is brilliant and inspiring as ever!

DJ Fasta is an established name in the Netherlands and beyond, a producer-DJ who delivers the freshest eclectic tracks, bootlegs and mixtapes. Check out the new edition of his FASTAPE series, hosted by MC Ashwin Jaydee!

8. Versano Laroz : So Fucking Amazing Mixtape Part 6

Versano Laroz is another important name. This rad 6th edition of his So Fucking Amazing Mixtape series came online last week. A little more focused on trap and hiphop than Fasta’s mix but that’s the point, it all goes together and people dig it. Check out the other editions here!

10. El Buga : Internationally Unknown Mixtape

Last year, the Chilean underground label Sello Regional was the most promising newcomer. And rightly so, because in the meantime, while we haven’t had enough time to blog their newest releases, they have developed into an ever more established player in the Chilean underground music landscape. El Buga is one of the founders and label owners of Regional who recently took his first steps towards a solo project which explores territory beyond the scope of Regional, more influenced by African flavoursand dub than the conventional deep Andean electrofolk and cumbia of the label.

This second edition of Internationally Unknown is a blend of Africa and the Andes with an organic dub-touch, featuring a wide range of better and lesser known artists like Rafael Aragon (France), Erick Rincon (Mexico), DJ Yirvin (Venezuela) and DJ Explosao (Angola).
