SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – FEBRUARY

Artwork by Ze Archnouf

So how are we all doing in this cold month of February? Probably freezing for some of you, but don’t worry, we have a nice & varied cumbia selection to warm you up !

SILLY TANG Selected:

To start this month I couldn’t have published anything else than this unbelievable acoustic video of Kumbia Boruka. I love the energy and vibes coming of this, I do feel like we miss some original cumbia bands such as this one and it seems like France has been the country many have based themselves in. Lovely, freezing bit of cumbia here, which honestly will make you melt! That trumpet! Come on! Pure love for this!

Now this is another real heart warmer but this one is a little hotter on the chillies! Once again Galletas Calientes comes back with an amazing release. This is the first single from Sunka album “Colombian Party”, released March 27 2017 on Galletas Calientes Records, featuriing Mc Jhon Pri (Systema Solar) & Marlen Obregón (Afrotumbao / La Mojarra Eléctrica). I have to say the production is so so tight! These heavy kicks followed by an unreal bassline and then the modern finish with those real subtle mid bass added in! I cannot wait for the whole project to come together because this is going to be off the roof! I´m sure they will be pre-releases appearing soon!

Just very quickly, but it had to be mentioned, this amazing live video where you can see the whole power of one of our favourite bands! Sidi Wacho coming to take over the world !

Hello to some quality tripped out world, with this track from El Peche. Honestly, this is some pure deep down production here. I have to say I have played this track on and on and I still find lots of new added surprises in the mix down. The fusion between these really electronic sounding beats and the Amazonian vocals is just so on point. And then this big fat bassline comes in and all you can do is brok-out hard! Very big tune, which you can grab from his bandcamp.

Here´s a nice mashup now! I was basically wondering through the internet, when I found myself cruising my whole lounge, dancing at one point and looked down and here it was, the mashup that you are hearing now. It’s from a producer from Mexico called Enrikisimo; it’s a great refix of a Campirana cumbia and the rapper called Comprendes Mendez and a little bit from a Uk band at the end which I cannot remember the name !

Sumohair always surprises me and I think that’s why I love his music so much. The ideas coming out of this producer´s brain are excellent and always brings me summer before its time ! So once again, Sumo Hair has smashed the granny out of this track, very subtle bassline on a subtle beat, with amazing vocals and this very addictive liquid mid which makes the whole sound very aquatic.

Ok ok, so I have to admit normally the slower part of this genre is excellent but not my priority to represent on here as my partners do an amazing job at it already. On this particular track I just got hooked at the beginning by its very continuous bassline and guitar groove. Only these two things! I promise to god! I have hooked my brain on it, so you can imagine, that when the flutes kicked in and the bassline doubled I just went mental. Very clean and dark track, coming from JAJA as a remix for the great Nicola Cruz.

Now onto the big boys with this one killer album from the all mighty Oscilador Bass directly outta Mexico! What can I say this album titled “Native” is a proper piece of artwork. The production is very very tight as always from him, the vocals and textures make you think you are actually within the Amazon forest and the artwork concludes this album by being a great piece of Cumbia history!

And when I said now with the big boys I didn’t mean only Oscilador! Here’s one of my all-time favourite producers for many reasons! First of all I think his sound are very futuristic and groovy for the cumbia genre, secondly because he is a truly real nice dude and finally because he lives in Britanny where I´m sure it is not the most tropical weather !

This track came out to help a great project, of which I will now talk about:

So this is something I do not really do, publishing my own work but this time it is to present this amazing idea by Fertil discos records and Folcore records. Please listen to the track but pay more attention to this:

Here is a sample of what we can make. Help us make history by reversioning the work of the Argentine musicologist, Leda Valladares, in a double-vinyl phonographic edition that will take you across the sound universe of ‘canto con caja’ from the Andean highlands to the electronic music perspective, through covers and remixes by featured producers and singers of the Iberoamerican scene such as Chancha Via Circuito, El Remolon, Tremor, Tonolec, Intiche, King Coya, Soema Montenegro, Miriam Garcia, Qechuaboi, Cherman, Nixtamal, Doma Tornados, among others.

Oh hello! Did you say cumbia? Did you say Dub? Well here I am then ! This mix is from the well-known Bombombum, and is true pleasure to the ears; trust me daddy! I do not know what this artist uses for his mixtapes but honestly they just flow out of his hands and into my ears. He has now released a couple of them in the last month so I present to you this one but go check his soundcloud for more delights!

Here´s another player in the game I would love to meet up as he seems to be a proper legend! Here’s a mixtape from Secta Selectah for our great friends from Radio Rebajado. I have been rinsing this mix for the last couple of weeks and I can truly say it’s a grower! At the beginning it sounded nice but nothing special but then after many listens now I can testify it is pure fayah!

And to finish this month I wanted to ask our readers: Who knows about Acid techno? Well I can tell you that Lascivio Bohemia has definitely heard something about it. This track has been staying in my mind for weeks now and I cannot wait to play it out to a mad crowd. I have to say that I truly believe he has magic in his hands and this is just the beginning of his musical career and life. I cannot wait for more works from him, for me one of the greatest cumbieros to come out in the last couple of years.
KAYGEE Selected:

What a pleasure to start my selection with a new edit by El Búho. When you think you’ve already heard his best edits, he strikes again and comes up with this type of soothing progressive cumbia version. It evolves very slowly and subtlely, catching you on the way, and bringing in these beautiful touches and atmosphere he has.

Here’s a little taste of what Festival Nomade must have been like, in shape of a lovely compilation. This tune in particular is by M.RUX, a producer who I first heard of on Frente Bolivarista & Voodoohop, as well as in several wicked mixes he’s been uploading, and I must say I’m a big fan! This is another great example of how effective and powerful a repetitive and progressive approach can be.  It feels like a slow tribal ritual of some kind, in a thick, humid and smoky environment: I love it!! Make sure you check out the whole compilation; it’s full of absolute gems, moving towards a slightly more electronic & deep side of the tropical jungle! Get the whole comp. on: https://nomaderecords.bandcamp.com/

I didn’t know the original tune but I absolute adore what Barrio Lindo did to it. It feels like he’s added some kind of deep underwater bassline to this moving voice, with a hint of shakers and flutes to top it up. It’s always a real pleasure to hear his new productions.

Another beauty has just landed on Shika Shika, and this time it’s by Guazu. His new Ep is amazing, but I must say that this tune got me in a different way. The percussions really create a powerful atmosphere with a set of emotive synths & melodies, and a beautiful marimba to top it off! It’s got the whole package: the vibes, the groove and the emotion!!

This is proper tropical African vibes straight from Toulouse with the all mighty Yeahman back with another banger! His productions are so tight and groovy; he just nails it every time! Keep an eye out for the badman, and check out the rest of this beautiful EP out on Carnibal Records with tunes from Nirso, Timboletti & Hammond Classics. You can purchase the full EP on: https://carnibalrecords.bandcamp.com/album/carnibal-016

Here’s a wicked preview of Lagartijeando’s forthcoming album – El Gran Poder – out soon on Wonderwheel Recordings. They describe his works as “psychedelic dance tracks (which) latch onto everything from traditional folk sounds from the Bolivian altiplano to the jungle beats of Brazil.” The charango loops give the tune a great vibe, accompanied by a beautiful sounding flute and chant, combining this traditional root with a wicked light & sunny dancefloor orientated beat. This album will be released on vinyl; you can pre-order you LP on: https://wonderwheelrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/el-gran-poder

There’s been a whole set of remixes of this tune floating about for a while now, but this one brings in a new and different flavour: it gets even deeper!! This is exactly the type of tune that deserves to be heard on a big sound system, to appreciate the full experience of how deep Eduardo Zambrano has just gone, with a feeling of old school Deep Medi vibe.

Yes yes ! I hadn’t heard anything from these guys in a while and I was glad to hear this wicked dubbed out new release. I love Dub in general, and have had the pleasure of hearing many different approaches to it, but these guys really nail it! They manage to mix all of these dubbed out little details, skanks and synths to a different beat & atmosphere than the one usually found in dub; these sounds take you deep into the tropical jungle rather than towards the usual Jamaican vibe, and it’s a really nice change!

Stream on: https://rolandobrunoysuorquestamidi.bandcamp.com/

Big ups to Rolando every time! For those of you who like us have had the pleasure of seeing his shows, guitar moves and beautiful shirts live, here’s a reminder of what it sounded like! And for the others: enjoy Rolando Bruno & his guitar, accompanied this time by ‘El Grupo Arevalo’.

We’re clearly moving away from the traditional cumbia here, and going towards the more electronic & housy part of this scene (which I am absolutely loving at the moment), with this new release on Tropical Twista Records by Kraut, which definitely deserves to be listened to; and here’s what Kraut has to say about his own work: “It doesn’t matter where you come from, music is the universal language to move, to feel, to dance without cultural boundaries. Universo sin Fronteras is a story about blending rhythms, melodies and cultures.”

Big ups to all the producers out there who bring out so many new sounds every month for all of us to enjoy, travel, dance or relax, and big ups to all you readers with whom we really enjoy sharing this post with every month.

March is just around the corner, and we’re already looking forward to hear what it has in mind for us.

Saludos from La Selva,

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – DECEMBER

Artwork by Tropi Delia

So this is the last post from us for 2016 ! We believe 2016 was a very hard year for some but in general Cumbia has helped us through it and gave us that big smile we hope you are all having whilst reading this. Thank you so much for keeping this blog alive and generally giving us the love to carry on writing about this magical music.

THE SILLY TANG SELECTED

Kazike en Estado de Trance Mixtape 032 – Festival Nomade Colombia

To start my selection I have the pleasure and honour to present this absolute badman mix from a person that is very important to me! Yes: Kazike en Estado de Trance is his name and he is the person who taught me everything I know about classical vintage cumbia. A great person and also a great maestro. Here he presents to us a really well put together mix for the Colombian festival that is “Nomade” organised by Mr Toe. Enjoy!

La Orrorosa Feat. El Hijo De La Cumbia – Infeccion Tropikal

So now let’s get started with the cumbia punk, one of my favourite fusions within this musical scene. New track from La Orrorosa of the disc “infección tropical” with the participation of Emiliano Gomez (El Hijo de la Cumbia). The rhythm and vocals couldn’t go better together to be honest. Really powerful track which I recommend to any Cumbia-Punk lover.

Jota Karloza – Ugate Sooraj (SolSelectas)

So as I might have said before since I saw Barrio Lindo this summer I truly discovered a love for this downtempo minimal stuff and I have to say it is growing J On this particular track Jota Karloza brings us some deep ethnic vocals on a really rounded bassline. The label “Sol Selectas” always brings us the cream of the crop and on this one they have really upped the game once more. Recommended for any time spent on the beach or as my partner in crime would say in any hammock 😉

VIVOTROPICAL – Cumbia De Los Pajaritos (cover De Los Mirlos)

Who has seen “Stranger Things “? Well if you have, this is the Cumbia version of the synthesised soundtrack. Well not really as El Búho brought a version a while back. But you will see what I mean when you press play on this track. VIVOTROPICAL is a producer I have just discovered who seems very fluid and locked on his synth game! The beat is nice but very simple and lineal with this main guiro line, but the main work is in the composition and deepness of the effects. Brilliant vibes and I believe this has already reached our alien friends in outer space!

Metralleta De Oro – Doing Time (Sumohair Remix)

YES! It seems like Sumohair lives in a constant summer state, more productions he brings out, the more I need sun, cocktail and chilling L.A style. This refix of the classical “Sublime” track is all to love. Nicely made bassline rounding up some light drum breaks followed by some ragamuffin arrangements. What is there not to like about this eh? So go on if it is rainy or grey where you are close the curtains, get a cocktail and put volume on full blast!

Fokus – Amazonico

When Eastern Europe meets Colombian cumbia what does it give you, you might ask? Well I will reply with great joy: this is what it gives you. An absolute belter of a tune J a truly inspirational and nice friend has brought me this killer track a few weeks back and wow. He has also asked me to work on a colab with him so watch out in 2017 for the Fokus vs Silly tang stuff to appear. Coming back on this track with an amazing effort from a Jungle producer background and as always a superb construction with deep subs to get us jumping.

SCBdB – Jeden

So while we are in Eastern Europe I got sent this mix via soundcloud by this upcoming artist called “SCBdB” (be careful about the spelling he is meticulous) 😉 So this amazing journey within the deeper vibes of cumbia has totally rocked my world. On a different tip than the previous mix by KAzike, this takes us on a deeper more electro side of the spectrum. The great news is that you will be able to stream his first performance live on our first show of the radio via our: la Selva Radio J

Los Wemblers de Iquitos – Lamento del Yacuruna (Tribilin Sound Remix)

Back to basics children, back to basics. Every time I see a Tribilin Sound track come up I´m like a kid at Christmas, believe me. So when this appeared and I saw “Los Wemblers” and “Tribilin Sound” on this remix, every day is the 25th of December for me now. Really subtle as always but truly refined tune with this amazing guitar, that backs up the Wemblers. Some psychedelic notes in here and some really echoed out instruments: a perfect combination from the mighty Tribilin Sound aka Alvaro Ernesto.

Julio Inti – Cumbia Dub La Venenosa vol7

Here we have another fusion which I love within this Cumbia world, Dub and Cumbia mixed together in a superb mix brought to us by “Julio Inti”. As you may know this is an area of expertise for me and I have to say hats down to one of the best compiled mix of these two genres meeting each other. Run go tell your friends!

LolaManola – Psicosis Fem & Sziget Fest (presentación)

Here she is, our famous local from Madrid, “ Lola Manola”!! Very young on the capital´s scene, she has really made a great effort and impression on us. We have had the pleasure of hearing her a couple of times now and believe me she knows what she is doing. Here is a mixtape she brought us as promotion for the two nights she rocked in Madrid, “Psicosis tropical” and “Conspiraciones Tropicales”. Get your ears around it and it will make you digest a big New Year lunch or brock out to a pre-new year party J

Aslán Dub System feat. Jef Stott – Soñar (Global Barrio)

The label Global Barrio which is new to me has had an amazing impact bringing some quality music to our ears, thank you Aslan Dub. Trust me this compilation is pure gold! I have chosen this particular track to present it to you because as I said earlier Dub and Cumbia I just love it. But this is not any Dub, the production and slickness of these sounds are real soft and marvellous. Really great, great work thank you so much.

RCA & Tropikhongo – Delicia (Bleepolar Remix) (Regional Label)

Our friends from Regional never sleep, FACT. No, only kidding, but they are really active all the time which is a blessing for our scene. Here is a remixed Ep by RCA & Tropikhongo called Delicia. I chose this version because of its dancefloor potential. I can promise you that this track by the Colombian “Bleepolar” well mixed is a killer for the hips!!!

Turbo Sonidero Presenta: Kumbias Macabras en Acetato (Records)

To end my part of the selection for this year and this month who else than Turbo Sonidero! If you know how to get hold of these guys please contact me via “Silly Tang” as I have some projects but never managed to get in touch J To get back to this mix, it is as always very true and generous on the cumbia level. From the first tune you can hear the purity of the music that these boys bring. I´m a real big fan of this collective.

KAYGEE SELECTED:

Rio Mira – Adios Morena (AYA Records)

This was released just after our post last month and has been on repeat since then ! The original tune is simply fantastic, and is followed by 4 great remixes by Nicola Cruz, Kaleema & Chancha Via Cicuito, M.RUX, and Midnight Ravers. Adios Morena is the first single of Rio Mira’s forthcoming first album ‘Marimba del pacifico’ so make sure you keep en eye out!

Barrio Lindo & Wende Wen – El Humo del Fasito (Damas Gratis cover)

Stream: https://barriolindo.bandcamp.com/track/el-humo-del-fasito-damas-gratis-cover

Barrio Lindo teamed up with Wende Wen for a new ep, which includes this beautiful chilled out cover of Dama Gratis’ tune “El Humo del Fasito”.

Matanza & Oceanvs Orientalis – La Luna Y El Lobo (Jhon Montoya Expedition) (Shika Shika)

Waow waow & waow ! What a great journey !! I love the slow & minimal aspect of the original tune, but I must say Jhon Montoya absolutely nailed it with this remix. The progressiveness and atmospheric violin he adds is just perfect ! That’s another one that has been on repeat for the past month.

El Búho – Mañana En Tepoztlán (Pata De Perro Remix) (Global Barrio)

I’m a big fan of the band Pata de Perro and a huge El Búho fan, so this could only be a winner for me! They have added a proper live dubbed out groove to the original tune and it sounds great! As mentioned above by the Silly Tang, this tune is part of an amazing compilation, Global Barrio’s Vol. 1, so make sure you check out the whole thing.

Mercedes Nasta – Paricutín (El Búho Edit)

The man never stops and it’s becoming a monthly tradition to post about his new tunes and edits, with this one going out to Mercedes Nasta. He’s done it again and manages to take us on a wonderful journey into his world accompanied by Mercedes Nasta’s lovely soothing voice.

LEDA Edits Vol.1 (Fertil Discos & Folcore)

We mentioned their campaign last month and here are the first two versions of this incredible forthcoming double-vynil, which will also include great artists like Chancha Via Circuito, Tremor, Tonolec, Intiche, King Coya, Soema Montenegro, Miriam Garcia and Doma Tornados, among others. For now, here is El Remolon’s deep bass driven remix, and a wicked progressive edit by Barda. You can still support the campaign on: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/el-camino-de-leda-compiling-leda-valladares-music#/

Bomba Estéreo – Raíz (Nicola Cruz Remix)

This is an absolute beauty of a tune! Nicola Cruz just landed! He brings so much texture and depth to the remix, incorporating Liliana Saumet’s voice perfectly ! It’s part of Bomba Estereo’s brand new ‘Amanecer Remixed’ album so get on it while it’s hot !

Señor Chancho Meets El Buga – Conga Dub (Shango Records)

Fresh sounds straight out of Shango Record’s oven with this banger by Señor Chancho & El Buga. Pure dubby tropical sounds with wicked flutes and synths to groove up the whole thing, without forgetting a fat beat and a fat bassline: I love it ! This tune is part of the ‘Bora Bora’s Mist’ Compilation, which is full of other great tunes so make sure you check it out: http://www.junodownload.com/products/bora-boras-mist/3303520-02/

La Walichera – Sendero (King Coya Remix)

Out on La Walichera Remix Vol. 1, here’s King Coya’s cumbia bass remix of the tune Sendero. He brings an original intake to the tune, with very few drums and nearly no kicks but it works really well.

Eduardo Zambrano – Llamacornio (Edmoon Records)

Let’s travel to the Andes with Eduardo Zambrano’s new album. I had been waiting for this one, and it was definitely worth the wait. His music is hard to describe as it covers many genres whilst incorporating different influences, and that’s part of why I love it! He brings a potent electronic touch to the more traditional and emotional side of his tunes, switching from one rhythm to another so smoothly, and always progressing along the tune.

Lascivio Bohemia – La Cumbia Quitapenas

Yes yes and more yes ! Another great project by the above mentioned Eduardo Zambrano is Lascibio Bohemia, and it’s hot ! He goes back to the more traditional side of things on this one and brings to us this beauty, with heavy guiros and powerful flutes! It’s part of a new 3 track EP so hit play and enjoy the whole thing. “This is a tribute to Sixto Silgado, Paito & Los Gaiteros de Punta Brava, life was better after having seen them live”

VA Hystereofônica Vol. 1 (Tropical Twista Records – 2016)

Very happy to hear Tropical Twista’s first compilation entirely dedicated to female artists: “Here we have artists that come from different branches that ensnare the electronic Latin-American scene in the most variable sonic textures and beats per minute. There are twenty-two women involved in this project – and only women – , some already established and some new potencialities among them, gathered by Ágatha Barbosa (Cigarra) in a big net on the Hystereofônica project.”

The Nu LatAm Sound – Ecuador Episode 3 – The Andes Sounds (ZZK Films)

Here’s the third episode of ZZK’s series on new Latin American sounds, focusing this time on Ecuador and the Andes Sound. It’s always a pleasure to watch these episodes. Enjoy ! The fundraiser they had put in place to continue these audiovisual projects was reached so we can expect more to come 🙂

Paloma del Cerro en Tomate la tarde

Nice interview with Paloma del Cerro + live performance on Argentinian TV.

Don Plok – Mercedes Sosa – La Carta (remix) (La Bicha Producciones)

Don Plok in the place straight from Argentina with a live remix of Mercedes Sosa’s ‘La Carta’.

Chancha Via Circuito ft. Miriam García – Como Noide (en vivo en La Trastienda)

Chancha Via Circuito’s live performances are becoming more and more impressive, and including more & more people to the show; here’s an extract of what went on in La Trastienda

Sonido Gallo Negro – Mambo Egipcio

Brand new bangin’ psychedelic cumbia by Sonido Gallo Negro, announcing their forthcoming album ‘Mambo Egipcio’

Son Palenque – A PILA EL ARROZ

Son Palenque have just brought out a brand new video clip straight from the beach for us to enjoy.

Festival Nomade 2017

For those of us who couldn’t go to this lovely festival in Colombia, here’s a little glimpse of what went on ! Festival Nomade has another editon coming up in Chile so keep an eye out !

Fania Presents: MANANA Cuba Festival

Great insight into the legendary Fania Records label and the recent Manana Festival which took place in Cuba not so long ago, bringing together both traditional and electronic worlds by including a fabulous list of bands and djs.

As always, here are some of the mixes which I have had the pleasure of hearing over the past month:

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – NOVEMBER

sexy123

Art by Tropi Delia

This month, La selva moves into winter cumbia style, with bigger warmer basslines  to keep everyone cosy at home and on the dancefloor! There are loads of amazing tunes out, here is a selection of the best below! We hope you enjoy!

Silly Tang selected:

Carmelo Torres

http://uonset.com/es-ES/descubrir/52-world-music/357-carmelo-torres

To start this month Sexy Saturday Cumbia, some very sad news indeed, but that we can all help towards. The great maestro Carmelo Torres got his sweet accordion robbed last week. Here is a page where you can actively participate in the buying of a new one for him. Even if you cannot put any money, share it! A very good cause for a much needed artist

Lascivio Bohemia – La Visherita Flashera

To follow getting on some deeper vibes via our champion Lascivio Bohemia ! Once again he comes through with a delicate but very hard hitting cumbia called, La Visherita Flashera. The production behind this man is top notch every time but in this one we can feel the drum patterns being really worked on. Very spooky synth or instrument noises which would have blended perfect into your Halloween fiesta.

San Ignacio – Os Ventos (Fertil Discos)

I wanted to stay within deep cumbia and what better track to bring you than this one by San Ignacio! Also on a great label which I have had the pleasure of meeting the owner, the great Jin Yerei . Normally not my type of music but this track caught my ear via its guitar strings and deep kicks. Very soothing tune indeed.

Stereo Beaver – Pelicula (Folcore)

Let’s stay down there within the deepness for a while eh! This is an altogether bomb of a compilation compiled by the mighty label Folcore. Lots and lots of good tunes on here but a couple have really grabbed me. I’m not sure what exactly pointed me in choosing this particular track apart from the way it has been put together. I think the lay out is absolutely on point. And as the winter is settling here in Madrid this melody goes perfectly with the clouds passing by.

Nixtamal – Eru Ara (Folcore)

So people will start saying “your French, his French” you campion him a lot! Well lol I have actually never had the pleasure to meet Nixtamal and I can tell you I would love to! Now to come back to music and production (no hippie business here). This track also to have come out on the Folcore compilation first of all has vocals which reminded of the very famous French film “The Chorists” even though I’m sure it’s not taken from there. That’s what grabbed my ears first and then the pushy mids Nixtamal always brings in his tunes are larger than life. Lovely drum work, but oh god I love this bassline!!!

Poupa Honk – The Great Dog (Folcore)

So this month for me Folcore came and did it properly, and I know personally that next month they have plenty of other surprises.

So this track is by a producer I didn’t know before, which really interested me because he has come through with a whole album of various beats. I love strings and kicks so you will understand why I chose this one to present this album.

Loquera Tradición – Santa Muerte

As you might have realised, I dig a lot of acoustic Cumbia and I truly respect its foundation. Where here is a cumbia track which blends at first the very sharp acoustic sounds and then drops into a slow digital monster! Never came across these guys but I love the way they combine the old and the new.

El Remolon – Radio Gladys Palmera

Here I wanted to present this fabulous video of the great El Remolon which I met last month. This video has been shot in the studios of a great local radio called “Radio Gladys Palmera” which I really respect for all there efforts and work. To come back to the video this is from his new EP on Fertil Discos called Senderos. A very political piece of music if you ask em and here an superb version of the track called “Guerreros del Amor”.

Aztek 732

Was it Halloween this month passed? Well yes it was if you weren’t already aware… No this mix is no joke! A person I had the pleasure to meet about a year ago has dropped this killer skilled mixtape for all our Halloween musical needs. I have to say sometimes in the Cumbia world we encounter some djs which are good but not topatop, well here is an ill mixed session by Aztek732!

Dj Masaya

Cumbiah! Mixtape (Selected and Mixed by Dj Masaya)

https://www.mixcloud.com/estebanmasaya/cumbiah-mixtape-selected-and-mixed-by-dj-masaya/

Just a little mention of this real nice mix from our good mate my Dj Masaya ! Look out for its filled proper nice cumbia hits and as always very smoothly mixed from the most famous moustache in the cumbia world.

Rafael Aragon

And to finish my month´s selection who else than our top shotter badboy Rafael Aragon. Real tropical vs Bhangra gangster this time he has come to run it with this tight little mix dedicated to the Colombian folklore. It is filled of rudeboy styles and proper dapper tunes. (Hopefully Mr Rafael would have got the joke) No seriously this is an excellent mix to get more Colombian musical culture within you!

Coconutah selected:

6Blocc – Ragga Cumbia 4

Bass music producer 6Blocc presents a “round of cumbia edits of classic reggae and dancehall classics”. What a great release! I have been secretly hoping to have cumbia edits of these classics for years, and here they are! Brought together by heavy bass and trappy cumbia beats, this is sure to get the dancefloor grooving!

Angeles Azules – Cumbia Suavecita (Nacho Libre Remix)

Digital style! Atmospherics, synths and guitars take you on a journey into digital cumbia as a stylish beat pumps in the background. Sound good? This is cumbia suevcita remix by Nacho Libre.

Dengue Dengue Dengue! – The Enemy (Sonidero Sabotaje Bootleg Remix)

Here´s a nice little edit of Dengue Dengue Dengue´s the enemy, remixed into a slow cumbia sonidera style stomper. It keeps the vocal hooks and the atmosphere while radically switching the beat up – the guiros are pretty relentless and the result is hypnotising.  Check out Sonidero Sabotaje!

Jairo Mendez & Tropikore – Peru Bass (6to Aniv. Cassette Blog)

Bass cumbia in full glory with Jairo Mendez & Tropikore distilling a cut of dirty, bassy cumbia, full of their signature sound. Wobbly bass lines are matched to perfection with a funky guitar and choice vocal cuts, while a heavy guiro rounds it off. Check this badboy out!

Kaygee selected:

Kike Pinto – Mi Corazon (El Búho Edit)

What better way to begin my month’s selection than with an edit by El Buho. I will probably be repeating myself when I say that he has once more managed to bring in his world to the original tune with smooth and deep touches all around whilst keeping the original folkloric vibe. It’s an absolute beauty !

El Búho – Pehuenche (Gente De Los Piños) (D R O S S E L)

And this month El Buho delighted us with another release, which came out on an amazing compilation: ‘VAgabunden Teil 1’. The whole tune is incredible, but I’m sure you will notice how the subs just take you to the next level. I simply recommend that you press play and enjoy the journey. And don’t forget to check out the whole compilation, which has loads of great tracks including a wonderful one by San Ignacio.

Cigarra – Hilda (Dj Nirso Edit) (Tropical Twista Records)

This is a beautiful spaced out edit by DJ Nirso. It has a lovely electronic approach to the usual cumbia beat, with a load of atmospheric shakers and cowbells to enhance the trip. It’s always a pleasure to hear Nirso’s works. Make sure you check out the whole Remix Ep on https://tropicaltwistarecords.bandcamp.com/album/cigarra-l-mbica-re-edits-tropical-twista-records-2016

INTICHE – Zurka (Cassette Blog)

Now this is hot hot hot !!! Cassette Blog have just released another one of their banging compilations, celebrating their 6th anniversary, and Intiche landed with this incredible bass business. The progression in the whole tune is amazing; it takes you, slowly but surely, into a profound undergound atmosphere.

Grab the whole compilation for free on https://cassetteblog.bandcamp.com/

King Coya feat. La Walichera – Tierra de King Coya (ZZK Records)

Yes yes yes, King Coya is back ! Here’s the first preview of his forthcoming second album on ZZK Records. This tune shows a great mix of traditional elements mixed in with heavy kicks, basslines & spaced out synths for an all in one wicked tune, leaving us eager to hear the whole album in 2017.

LA VIDA ES DURA (versiondub) INTI ZIMAN

Some of them drop cumbia bass, and Inti Ziman has just dropped Salsa Bass !! Absolute rinse out ! I love how he has maintained most of the salsa rhythm and added a fat bassline to it.

Bert Kaempfert – Afrikaan Beat (Time to beat)

So this is not cumbia, nor salsa, but I’m sure a lot of view here love a bit of Samba, and especially when it has a hint of drum’n’bass added to it ! Straight out of Madrid, Time To Beat always releases some really nice sunny and groovy dnb edits. Make sure you also check the salsa dnb edits he has on his soundcloud.

Ondatrópica – Hummingbird

Ondatrópica are preparing a new album, ‘Baile Bucanero’ on Soundway Records or 2017 and it’s looking tasty.

Tropical Frequencies: A brief history of Peruvian cumbia (Native Instruments)

Native instruments are coming up with interesting short videos recently, including this one, with a little introduction into part of the traditional Peruvian cumbia sounds.

Like every month, as well as he great amount of releases that have come out, there has been a huuuuge amount of lovely mixtapes from all over the place for us to enjoy, and here are some of them:

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA — OCTOBER

sex-sat-cumbia-dar-al-naim-2

Artwork by Dar Al Naim

So here we go for this month´s edition of Sexxy Saturday Cumbia. The autumn is always a prolific period for musical releases, and as you will see below, this time has not disappointed. Check out a fresh selection of cumbia inspired tunes below:

KAYGEE selected:

Frente Bolivarista Vol.4 – Nômades

Has Christmas arrived a few months early? Well it certainly looks like it. This compilation has come out straight from the woods, after another great Nomade gathering, which was held in Germany not so long ago. The track list is simply perfect and includes some of my favorite producers of the moment such as Pigmalião, Vruno, Matanza, Spaniol, Dandara, Kurup, El Remolon, Intiche, and many others that I had the pleasure of discovering.

“Nomade is a festival, music label and artist collective seeking new sound territories merging the contemporary to the ancestral Latin America folk.”

Hit play and enjoy the whole lot!

El Remolon – Senderos (Fertil Discos)

So here it is, El Remolon’s new album released a few weeks ago on Fertil Discos. From what I read on their website, this work seems to be a new step for him, taking a new direction, slightly more experimental than his usual banging digital cumbia. The variety of beats and influences found in this album is really interesting: “It travels across rhythms and formats: acid sounds, house reminiscent bases, trap, deep voices, autotune and synthesizers that could either come from a minimal track or a cumbia villera”. I really look forward to hearing these new beats live on a big soundsystem.

PrΛ.Λ.H – Chamada Remixes (Nomade Records)

What a release! I must say I was already a huge fan of the original mix, so hearing so many new versions in the hands of Vruno, Pigmalião, RLHBSLCN, Dandara, Steffen Kirchhoff, Trippin Jaguar and Ninze was just one big auditory orgasm. They have all stayed quite close to the original vibe and structure of the tune, whilst adding their delightful touch to it, which brings them all together in one beautiful EP full of organic & deep sounds, and electronic layers thus creating new textures for our pleasure; and the good news is that their will be more similar projects to come.

P.r.Λ.Λ.H ~ Chamada (Jota Karloza remix)

I don’t really know why this one wasn’t released on the above mentioned EP but it definitely deserves a good listen. Jota Karloza is on my radar these days and has been coming up with some absolute gems. His remix is simply beautiful, with new crunchy details appearing here and there, enhancing his vision of the whole thing; he has also kept the original feeling and progression of the tune, and it works really well.

El Buga – Mini Conga Remixes (Regional Label)

Another remix EP was released on the all mighty Regional Label, including 6

great remixes by Larry SKG, DJ Nirso, VSKA, Mambisa, Bagre and Dúli. They are all really good in different ways, even though they all used the main flute and congas in similar ways to the original; but I must say I have a little ‘penchant’ for Dúli’s spaced out version.

I’m really enjoying the amount of remixes coming out recently, from all over the place; a proof of the constant exchange and will to share, explore and develop new ideas together.

coss – Nagual (El Búho Remix)

“Please enjoy this lovely collection of colourful music gems and take part of this journey thru time and space, silence and recreation.”

El Búho strikes again! I didn’t know the original tune, or any of the other 5 producers involved in this remix EP, but as always, El Búho has hit the spot! He always manages to create his own textures, taking you on a journey into his world. I love it.

Xique Xique – Xaxoeira (Nicola Cruz Remix) (Magic Movement)

It must be the month of remixes or something because loads are coming out from all over the place, and another great one has just landed! I loved the original tune and I must say that hearing the much-loved Nicola Cruz’s remix of it put a big smile on my face. It’s a really nice 4/4 progressive beat which slowly, but surely, gets you grooving, and builds up really well to a lovely 6 minute journey.

Universildo – Pru Etnico (Shika Shika)

Shika Shika is one of the labels of the moment, releasing beautiful journeys from all around the globe. This tune is part of “Botanas II” EP by Universildo, which if I understood correctly was made in collaboration with Chancha Via Circuito. I didn’t know anything about this project but loved it straight away and really look forward to hear more from where that came from. It feels like a deep shamanic dream into their worlds.

RAYADOR – Esquinas (WIP)

El Rayador is back! I hadn’t heard anything from him in a while and was really pleasantly surprised to hear this tune. A banging cumbia beat with a hint of hip hop and a fat bassline to get the groove going. Straight from Cordoba in Argentina, keep an eye out for this guy.

Nicolas Jaar – No (Other People)

https://soundcloud.com/ilttcom/nicolas-jaar-no

So here it is, a cumbia beat in a Nicola Jaar album (out now on his new album ‘Sirens’). This had to happen; it’s probably his Chilean roots slowly coming back to him. I must admit that I wasn’t totally convinced when I first heard it, but I think it’s what we call a ‘grower’. The more you listen to it, the more you get it, and the more you love it ! I heard Jin Yerei drop it in one of his sets the other day in Madrid and that’s when I realized what a good tune it was.

Kumbia Queers – Una, Dos, Ultraviolenta

(Cover de Los Violadores)

After seeing them in what was probably one of the best cumbia gigs I’ve seen recently, I was happy to hear a new cover from the Kumbia Queers. The energy they have is impressive, and the fusion of genres they manage to create is just amazing: proper tropical punk business.

Izem – Hafa (Soundway Records)

For all the Izem fans out there you will be happy to know that his beautiful album ‘Hafa’ is now being released by Soundway Records ON VYNIL!!! And to celebrate the occasion, here’s a little freeby from them. You can order the vinyl directly from:

https://www.soundwayrecords.com/Shop/DownloadDetails?rid=SWR_RE_115

Lascivio Bohemia – Nos faltan 43

Many of you will remember the horrible disappearance of 43 students in Mexico about two years ago; a tragedy which is unfortunately not unusual over there. Lascivio Bohemia has decided to commemorate the event trough this tune and video. “No more state crimes in any country of the world”.

Download full EP at: https://lasciviobohemia.bandcamp.com/album/nos-faltan-43

Tremenda Jauría – Con tol deskaro

Straight from Madrid, these Kumbiaton lovers have been rinsing dancefloors and festivals all around Spain for the past few months, with a touch of punk attitude and a hint of autotune, which actually works really well! If you don’t know them get involved, even though I must say that the real effect of this band really comes out during their concerts.

El Camino de Leda: Recopilando a Leda Valladares (Fertil Discos // Folcore)

Some great campaigns are seeing the light these days and this is one of them. Fertil Discos & Folcore are teaming up for a tribute to the Argentine singer Leda Valladares’ works by working on vinyl release with works from Chancha Via Circuito , El Remolón , TREMOR , King Coya , Soema Montenegro , Miriam García , Paloma del Cerro , Barda , San Ignacio, SidiRum , INTICHE , Doma Tornados , Uji , Celeste Y Las Mil Jarillas, Camanchaca , Pol Nada , Juan Sorrentino , El Pastiche , Mutienigga, and Qechuaboi. I’m really happy to see more and more vinyls appearing in this scene. I won’t say anymore, apart from the fact that I really hope they reach their goal for us to hear the final result very quickly. Find all the info you need about this campaign on: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/el-camino-de-leda-compiling-leda-valladares-music#/

ZZK Films Crowdfunding 2016

Here’s another really interesting campaign to support. Also from Argentina, the ZZK family wishes to continue spreading their love for the Latin American culture but this time under a visual format. I mentioned their first documentary a few months ago on this blog, and really like the idea of seeing more of them, and getting more insight into this scene which we’re currently bathing in.

Support the campaign on: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bring-compelling-latam-stories-to-world-with-zzk-music-films#/

La Cumbia del Magic Conch Spell – Fanfare Concha Mama

I don’t really know what to say on this one, the video is so…..original.

Hit play and enjoy !

Like every month, on top of the incredible amount of releases we have the pleasure of sharing with you guys, here are some mixtapes for you to enjoy:

MATANZA – R.A.Z.A.

Sidirum – Skyy Vodka Mix 16

Bleepolar Mixtape 030 – Festival Nómade Colombia

Peter Power – Voodoocast 009 (Voodoohop)

Jhon Montoya – elita Milano Mixtape

Nixtamal – Mixtape for Inna di Mood & Groovalizacion

JULIO INTI – Sarradinha Parisina Brazilucinado

SILLY TANG Selected:

Los Mexaterrestres – Kumbia Galáctica (ft.DucNoize x Fricci)

Here we go for this month´s selection ! Very exciting time for all cumbieros as the September low has passed, and now we can start creating and getting used to our winter on this side of the globe.

This first track is from Los Mexaterrestres from their album called Kumbia Galactica ! great algum which as the name say covers a very deep spaceship type of cumbia and lyrics ! I personally love the effects and rapping over the rhythms, the heavy kicks on there with the little flute added towards the end to give it a special finish. Great job !

SAN PAOLO – Mágico González – ░░ ▀▀ ░░ тємplо░░ ▀▀ ░░

Our Madrid loco, very crazy and very sexy Magico Gonzales comes at us with this hybrid of a track. Very different from his latest work he takes us on a ride through various breaks, trap, reggeaton all followed by this Indian guitar chord. The bassline of this track is to watch out for as it is very stinky indeed. Magico Gonzales once again, coming with surreal material – music and video. Great work from this locooooooo!

Kumbia Boruka ft. Celso Piña – El Porro Magangueleño

So here we go up a level in my eyes as this is a track by a band I have been championing for a while, featuring the all-time master who is Celso Piña. I personally absolutely love this song. It has all the best components you would want in the perfect cumbia track. AMAZING instrumental as always from Kumbia Boruka and really deep, heart felt vocals. I cannot insist enough that if you have the pleasure to have a visit from Kumbia Boruka in your town go and see them, they are to Europe for me the essence of the cumbia culture and sound.

América afroindígena – Yuka – Las pilanderas (sesión en vivo)

To stay in this kind of acoustic and general rooted cumbia vibe here is a live recorded version of Yuka and a track called Las Pilanderas. I have posted about this label before, they are doing some great work putting out these raw recordings and sharing this original sound so we can really feel like we’re in the middle of the amazon. Please go and check them out, give them a like and a helping hand as we need more projects such as this one to keep this sound truly living on.

Vermilion Bird – Cumbia Mala (Wile Out)

So now we have been through the less electronic side of cumbia for this month, lets go deep and get ravey! Here we have a very dark tune by the Argentinian born, New York based producer Vermilion Bird. A dedicated member of New York’s global bass family, she comes at us with some nasty, moody cumbia, released via the While Out label. The title says it all really “Cumbia Mala,” evil cumbia. The production on this one is so deep. Lots of wicked bassline swaps and rhythm changes. I love the panning work and the horns really makes the tune sound vicious. Love it !

Niño Virtual – La barata fue de Elotes

You want to go in this month ¿ Really in ¿ Well go run tell your friend we have a new killer on the scene ! Niño Virtual with this killer track: La Barata fue de Elotes. What can i say this track combines heavy as bassline with heavy lineal breaks which keeps it Wells tructured and mental changes. I´m not sure how I have never come across this producer but trust me this is fire! The song makes me feel like ants are crawling all over me but in a good way J

STACKED – Rocky Wellstack x MAKI – Hechizo [ADE SPECIAL]

Now we’re all in, we can go further and keep on raving hard ! ha ! This is an instant hit. I know it is not totally cumbia and it has very heavy Moombathon influences but the original sample and for me the best parts of this tune are the cumbia instrumentals and cumbia beats. Then saying this the whole production on this is off the hook. These kicks and highs are just lush and well the vocal instrumental absolute killers when it comes to make you bum shake!

EL Barba Dub – “F…- .. N “

Ok on this track I have to admit as an English speaker first the title shocked me a bit and I didn’t want to post anything related to the bad word 😉

Saying this I know the man having worked on projects with him and I know how South American people say this word. No racism involved and in this particular tune it is actually based on humour. I don’t know if you have seen the videos shared by this dwarf who so badly wants to be a black person? (if not check them out,. Hilarious) Well this track is dedicated to that fella. You can diefenetly recognize the production from El Barba those breaks and this particular instrument he loves so much. Really nice and humoristic tune hermano J

COCONUTAH Selected:

NEGRO DUB – SNAPCHAT CHAT

This is a fun electro cumbia tune from Negro Dub. A sweet build up based around a high pitched up vocal leads to a funky drop where some amazing swirly synths and pads combine with a rolling, percussive cumbia beat to create a dancefloor smasher. Undoubtedly a great option for warming up the club!

Shushupe – Semarang (Tribilin Sound Remix)

Tribilin sound presents a new remix of a Shushupe tune, a heavy bass roller with a Indian atmosphere. Slow paced but with a huge sound, this is sound system cumbia. Eery atmospheres and hindu flutes create a dense, almost claustrophobic feeling, and round off the whole. Love it!

Orihuela M.S.S. – Esta Madre No Tiene Nombre Pero Se Baila Bien

We only just missed this one last month, so here it is! Stomping Mexican cumbia can be crazy, with a fine example here by Orihuela M.S.S . This track is relentless as it never stops growing, and the acid synths are absolutely rinsing! The drums are particularly great and have loads of wicked glitch / reverby FX. Check it out!

Orihuela M.S.S – 24 años de decepciones

I just couldn’t resist publishing this second belter from Orihuela M.S.S, as this is another journey of its own kind. Described as Cumbia Digital Acida, this will hit the dancefloor hard. As usual in his productions, synths are very present and always have awesome, intricate variations.

Bosq y La Candela All-Stars – Ron Blanco Con Coco ft. Luis De la Rosa Solá

Not strictly Cumbia per se, I still wanted to present part of Bosq´s new projects with La Candela All-stars. Described as Reggae salsa, this is a funky number with a great vocal “featuring the immensely talented lead singer of Orquesta Macabeo” and some beautiful instruments in the background!

Dj Brian Lopez – Dance With The Devil (Cumbia Remix)

https://soundcloud.com/djbryandallas/dance-with-the-devil-cumbia-remix

And here we continue with the Mexican sonidero vibes, with some satanic cumbia! Its name says it all; this tune will turn you into a devil worshipper. Dance with the devil!

Erick Jaimez – El Cumbiambero LP

Here is a new Cumbia Lp by Mexican tropical master Erick Jaimez. It has a very Sonidero, rebajado feel all around but covers a variety of styles, from pure cumbialist, instrumental versions, to more minimalist, heavier, trappy styles. There are thirteen tunes so definitely something for everyone over the album. Boom ting!

Loko Bono Ft. Acapulco Zombie – (%_!_¨¨¨_779= Deep Latino $$HIT

https://soundcloud.com/acapulco_zombie/loko-bono-ft-acapulco-zombie-779-deep-latino-hit-c8_0

And another Mexican banger to end this month´s selection! Here is Loko Bono featuring Acapulco Zombie with an atmospheric, hip hop inspired track.

We hope you have enjoyed this month´s selection!

See you very soon for some more crazy cumbia action.

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA

sex-sat-cumbia-septiembre

Artwork by ATILA

Cumbia and tropical bass continue to advance all over the world this summer, with the genres being featured in many gigs and festivals this summer. As always, releases seem to pick up in September as artists come back from their interdimensional travels and return to work. This time is no different as enormous amounts of quality cumbia is to be found. Here are some choice cuts from this month!

 KAYGEE selected:

San Ignacio – Casiotone Rosa LP (Casa Caos / Fertil Discos)

Proper deep tropical business from Argentina with San Ignacio’s new LP released in conjunction with two labels which are bringing out some great stuff recently: Casa Caos & Fertil Discos. They also invited several other artists to bring out some special edits for the occasion.

San Ignacio has managed to “incorporate his passion for literature and music” in this beautiful journey. The sounds are profound, really well produced, liberating a powerful atmosphere along the EP. Some tracks like ‘Os Ventos’ or Yule & JGB’s rework of ‘Ou Não É’ stand out for me, but I strongly recommend you listen through the whole thing; it’s a beauty !

Palenque Records Afrocolombia Remix (preview clips) (Galletas Calientes Rec.)

What a great surprise that was; I didn’t see that one coming: a 5 track remix series “to pay a tribute to Palenque Records who are celebrating 20 years of musical activism in 2016”. Galletas Calientes Rec. chose 5 artists who are currently moving the tropical / global bass scene around the world and who have now delivered 5 great remixes: Solo Moderna, Motin, Ghetto Kumbé, Dj Sabo and Rafael Aragon. All 5 of them have really managed to keep the essence and magic of the original tunes, and bring these traditional champeta & currulao rhythms straight to the dancefloor. It’s out soon on vynil on Galletas Calientes Records, so pre-order it while you can at: http://www.toolboxrecords.com/fr/product/26627/oriental-jazz-cumbia-gypsy/galletas-calientes-10/

Jhon Montoya – Chuquy (Barrio Lindo Remix)

Barrio Lindo en la casa! I always love his productions; they are so tight and create such a great atmosphere. This one has a lovely repetitive and catchy groove to it, just in place for that amazing flute to come in and hit the spot.

We had the pleasure of meeting and seeing both John Montoya and Barrio Lindo play live this summer on a ‘paradise beach’ in Croatia: it was simply fantastic.

Kike Pintos – Zorro Negro (Barrio Lindo Remix)

And here’s another remix from Barrio Lindo; the man never stops! This time he takes us on a journey straight into the Andes with a tribute to the great Kike Pintos. You can once more feel a superb ambiance building up in the tune, full of delayed details and heavy subs to bring the whole trip together. Love it!

El Búho – Cumbia de las Cosas Extrañas

I haven’t seen this new series that every one is going on about at the moment, but I’ll happily enjoy El Búho’s edit of the themetune. This edit is so potent; its strong psychedelic cumbia beat evolves so well with these incredible atmos and crunchy noises all around. I don’t know what else to say, it’s simply beautiful!

[WeAreMadeOfLove] WAMOL II (Lump Records)

https://soundcloud.com/lump-rec/sets/lmp17b-wamol-ii

If you enjoyed the vibes of the last few tunes I mentioned, I really recommend you listen to this release, one of Lump Records’ latest ones. It has 2 awesome remixes of Jota Karloza’s ‘Om’. We’re moving one step away from the traditional cumbia beats but I’m sure alot of you will enjoy the deepness and heavyness of these remixes. They are both different and bring out distinctive parts of Jota Karloza’s original tune, which make them come together really well in this EP.

Lascivio Bohemia – In love with u

I think I just missed this one last month, but here it is incase you also missed it. Psychedelic cumbia business in the hands of the great Lascivio Bohemia. His productions are always so original, and so genuine. They are always evolving and moving around, bringing in darker elements when you expect it the least, grabbing you with them on the way. I can’t wait for this one to be released. Big ups!!!

Biomigrant ft Fredys Arrietaft & Toño García – La Muerte (Regional Label)

Last but not least for this month’s selection is this amazing tune by Biomigrant, which is part of his new album recently released on Regional Label. What a tune! The whole album reflects how Biomigrant has “inspired himself from the richness of rhythms found in Latin-America and amplified them with the power of electronic music”. Make sure you check the whole album out, and once more big ups to Biomigrant and Regional Label on this one!

And here’s a little extract of Biomigrant in full live flute business:

While we’re at it, here are some other sweet live sessions , documentaries, videoclips, etc… which have come out this month:

Picó: La Máquina musical del Caribe- La historia detrás de las máquinas

A wicked series of episodes, that takes us on short journeys into the Carribean Pico Culture. Make sure you check the newest episodes on: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCvD1zljWpKtioLCH5T3qZg/videos

La Nueva Vida Del Guakamayo (Spanish) El Velero Estudio – #1 (Partir De 0…)

It’s amazing to follow Srgt Garcia’s adventures in his ‘sailing studio’. The boat is slowly, but surely, shaping up and looks like we’re going to be hearing more from ‘El Guakamayo’.

Echoes ECR Cap. 9: Primera Parte

A nice insight into the origins and current musical movement happening in Ecuador which we are all following through artists like Lascivio Bohemia, Nicola Cruz, Quixosis, Huaira,…

Silly tang selected:

NEGRO DUB REMIX – CELSO PIÑA (REINA DE CUMBIAS)

Two very big names in the industry have come together on this remix. You can feel the very warm, dubby bassline from Negro Dub which brings this cumbia to its true colours. Then we have the king of the cumbia and his accordion with this very unique sound and way of giving us the latin American feeling.

Swindle – Connecta Ft. Ricardo China

For my 2nd choice this month I wanted to bring one of my favorite producers from the last 3 years to the table. SWINDLE is a true underground veteran and keeps on lighting us with his UK bass music hits and then takes the time to produce beautiful pieces such as this one. His production is always very based on those tight drums and a very deep bass sound. You can feel the London vibe coming straight at ya!

Eyeunle: guiro para change – America afroindigena label

Here we have a very authentic and rooted cumbia sound with proper traditional instruments. I absolutely love this song. Not my traditional selection but when it comes to music made with such respect and truthfulness to its roots I just cannot stop getting inspired by its sound and spirituality. Out on the label America Afroindigena please go and get yourself this masterpiece on soundcloud for free!

Loko Bono – Sistema beat Andino Steppa remix:

Now you might know or not know that I come from the Dub scene and I truly love this music. Cumbia came along a long time after I started this love of music J So when the master Loko Bono comes forward to present us this Steppa masterpiece I just couldn’t control myself. I had to mix it and remix it for almost a whole night! The production is very nice and has totally managed to get to that Hard Steppa style, but for me what breaks it down is the vocal. This voice is truly a blessing from the sky.

Yo me Llamo Cumbia radio show – Tribilin Sound

So this is not the first time I share one of these podcasts and really they are all amazing J

I wanted to bring this one out because of two tracks which stood out for me. First of all the Loko Bono remix mentioned above and then the unreal track by Tribilin Sound called X E*vax – Hijas! It is a half breed of Cumbia and Juke together with a totally twisted melody pon top. Really dig the man´s work recently getting into more bassline vibes.

Shushupe – sarayacu taricaya ep:

Now listen to this kick and bassline starting this track. Fabulous track with those acid melodies coming in. I cannot stress enough how amazing the production for this EP is – very very potent indeed. I think this type of EP has a place within the tropical world but also on many other fronts such as Minimal techno – or even disco. Really clever and ear pleasing piece of music!

El Cifickzer X El Kombo Kolombia – El chavo banda se siente relajado (Hnry X Sonidero Sabotaje Edit):

Once again I mention the Rebajado Mix crew, Hnry and El Cifickzer I know J But honestly I think I´m developing an addiction to cumbia rebajada and well they just do real good works these days and it seems they are not here to stop. So we can hear the original vibes to this track by El Cifickzer and then those slight kicks coming in by Hnry! Really nice and smooth cumbia we have here for everyone to enjoy free of charge so go run tell your friends!

Rebel up ! Soundclash – Andres Landero – Rosa y Mayo (Rebel Up! Duckfood Remix):

Would you like some bassline cumbia for your ears ? Well if you have some huge bass sound system en casa please turn it up!!! This version by Rebel Up Soundclash of a classic cumbia is a real sound system artillery. Big ups and we hope they carry one bring in on some nice remixes or even original Cumbia tracks!

Secta Selectah – El acordeon:

https://soundcloud.com/sectaselectah/secta-selectah-el-acordeon

Now this all time player has come to us with a track that reminds me of a Totty style cumbiaton! Real nice groove on this one helped by this accordion and those breaks within the tune. You can also hear those samples coming in everywhere as the song plays which gives a real nice originality to the beats!

Cal Jader – Movimientos Nueva Colombia mix:

London Calling ? No its Colombia calling J

The mastermind behind the mighty events “Movimientos” has just landed in Colombia a few days ago from what I know and to promote his stay he delivered this sublime mixtape. I know this is the end of summer but for Mr Jader it seems winter doesn’t exist ! Special request on his travels!

Larry SKG : SmallFall – Jungler (Marimba Remix)

Getting to the end of my selection for this month but I couldn’t let you go before mentioning this amazing piece of music. I had never heard of SKG before, a producer from Greece. He has nailed it with this remix. I love the Marimba instruments and love this really ill sound he has blended with it. I´m sure a lot of music will come out from this very talented producer so keep your ears out.

Moonanga – Tropical mix

genn-bass-4

Stream: https://www.mixcloud.com/MOUNANGA/100tropical-mix-by-moonanga/

And to finish off this real good month of Cumbia I wanted to introduce you to this band. It’s a duo, a very loco guy and a lovely female accordionist. Let’s say the guy goes by the name of Chongo Reinhardt and the lady of “ I mas”. Together, they form the all mighty Moonanga! We have had the pleasure of spending lots of time with them this summer and trust me they are full of new sounds and treasures coming out. Here is a presentation mix they made filled of classic and twisted dancefloor killers.

Coconutah selected:

Morenita (Sonido Satanas Remix)

Part of a new remix LP on Tropic-all, this cumbia remix by Sonido Satanas delivers on all levels. Classic Mexican vocals combine with catchy synths and instruments and a groovy bassline in great style. Good tune for the dancefloor, arriba la bebida!

Lascivio Bohemia – La Visherita Flashera

Lascivio bohemia features again for a brand new electro cumbia release, la Visherita Flashera. A very organic buildup is followed by some more “villera style” electronic synths and leads to an eery, spooky drop. This is a great mix of potent sounds and has a very original side.

DJ Caution – Hot Steppa

This new offering from DJ Caution is red hot. A very sexy electro cumbia, dancehall inspired stomper, it brings great vibes whenever it plays. Badboy pitched down vocals ride a carribean, tropical drum beat while an amazing accordeons spices things up. Tune!

Pinduca — Mistura de Carimbó com Ciranda (iZem’s Tropical Discoteq Special Fix)

Izem presents a cool Little edit of a original brazilian gem. Heavy shakers, a sweet cumbia groove and a catchy melody bring this number into 2016. This is very fresh and very tropical.

The Rebel – Cumbia Dub

This little nugget carries its name perfectly, and manages to build an old school 70´s dub feeling into the drums with tasty guiros over the top. A classic dub bassline and some swirling synths round the track off. Big up!

Dunkelbunt – Duck Polk

I don´t think I had ever seen Dunkelbunt, Balkan and swing legend, make a entry into the cumbia scene. This is forthcoming on his album and is certainly an original beat. Just like the previous tune, this rides that fine line between cumbia and dub perfectly. The acid guitar sounds absolutely amazing – it will trip you out.

Thanks for listening and reading and see you next month!

We are back and pleased to be here once again with our monthly cumbia selection!!

It never seems to get old as this edition delivers more than ever before!

We hope you enjoy:

KAYGEE:

Inti Che – Manantial (Folcore/Konn Recordings/Aztec Electronic Music)

This is one of the greatest releases that I have had the pleasure of listening to this month. Inti Che never fails. Hypnotic atmos and synths progressively meet potent drums and shakers, and create this all in one profound dense atmosphere. The panning on these tracks is fantastic and boosts the whole experience so well. I couldn’t choose one track to represent the whole album, so make sure you check out the whole thing. There’s even a track featuring Rodrigo Gallardo from Matanza. And thanks to those involved in making this album free to all of us !

Lulacruza – Orcas Remixed Vol. 2 (Black Swan Sounds)

Uno Resuena (Chancha Via Circuito Remix)

lulacruza

(Link to bandcamp: http://music.lulacruza.com/album/orcas-remixed-vol-2 )

I mentioned Nicola Cruz’s remix from the 1st volume of Orcas Remixes a few months back and was pleasantly surprised to see the Vol 2 taking shape so quickly, and with great names on board: Chancha Via Circuito, David Last, King Coya & MI. Chancha Via Circuito’s deep & organic remix of ‘Uno Resuena’ has left me eager to discover the 3 other remixes which should be available by the time you read this blog. In his remix, I love how Chancha integrates his world into the original vibe of the tune; you can really feel his sounds progressively surrounding her voice; the drop half way through is amazing !!!!

If you missed them, don’t forget to check the original ‘Orcas’ album released on Jumpsuit Records in April 2015, & ‘Orcas Remixes Vol 1’ released a month ago on Black Swan Sounds with remixes by Nicola Cruz, El Búho, SaQi & Sleepers Work.

VA – Sonidos De La Jungla (Fértil Discos)

“After receiving contributions from more than 40 artists, Fértil Discos is pleased to announce its first compilation, gathering the most interesting representatives of the south american electronic scene. Following the wave initiated by albums such as Chancha Via Circuito’s Amansara and El Remolón’s Selva, we’ve decided to adopt this environment as an inspiration, taking home recordings of birds, crickets, rivers, ayahuasca’s ícaros and amazonic sounds as leit motivs.” (Fértil Discos)

This album is beautiful and brings a really diverse insight into the current tropical wave. The sounds are organic, crunchy, vibrant, true,,…. and each track feels like it could be a different path in the jungle. And to make it all even nicer, the whole thing is available for free. Thank you to Fértil Discos and all the artists involved in this album.

Lascivio Bohemia – María Arrullá la Guagua

https://soundcloud.com/lasciviobohemia/mariaarrullalaguagua

“María arrullá la guagua = María calma al bebe = María calm the baby.”

Absolute tune !!! It has been on repeat since he kindly sent it to us a few weeks ago. Thank you from La Selva. The vocals are amazing, so powerful; just like the more instrumental moments in the tune, with beautiful marimbas, violins, bongos, congos, ….and a wicked subtle, crunchy bassline. The tune continuously evolves, with really good drops catching you on the way! The great news is that this is apparently one of the tracks from his forthcoming EP !

Gaiteiros De Lisboa – Se Fores ao Mar Pescar (El Bu?ho Remix)

https://soundcloud.com/el-buho/gaiteiros-de-lisboa-se-fores-ao-mar-pescar-el-buho-remix

I’d never heard of the Gaiteros De Lisboa and was amazed when I heard these pipes ! We’re used to tracks with LatinAmerican gaita sounds in them, but here, combined with the melancholic vocals, they bring you into a completely different world; it’s more like a slow walk along the misty Lisbon waterfront. El Búho has kept the essence of the vocals and pipes and added a lovely deep beat to them, full of atmos, reverbs, delays, and little details that enhance the whole atmosphere. Love it !

Tactical Groove Orbit – Trujillo Alto (TGO feat Calle 13 “Atrevete te”)

Tactical Groove Orbit has released several really cool remixes and new tunes over the past few months, but this one is a personal favorite. Proper dancefloor business. The production is really tight and potent. I hadn’t heard anything using Calle 13 vocals in a while and it was worth the wait; they work really well here. TGO also leaves a lot a room in his tune for the instruments to take over and add to the festive and bouncing vibe. We will have the pleasure of playing with him for the first time in Rodez (FR) next week, alongside many other french tropical ravers (more info: Balkan Vs Tropik https://www.facebook.com/events/363453160445203/ )

Tribilin Sound – Cholo Cósmico

This guys never stops ! Everytime I am on soundcloud I have the great surprise to see that he has uploaded something new, and this time he’s gone deep and I love it.

A deep and thick atmosphere with heavy cowbells and shakers that take you on a 4 minute journey into some sort of synthesized tropical jungle. Close your eyes and enjoy.

Chakana – Inkarri (Colectivo Huachuma)

Another incredible musical journey ! Seems like 2016 is starting off with a very deep and atmospheric vibe; I like it !! Thanks to the almighty Silly Tang for sending this one my way. I had heard of the Colectivo Huachuma and their parties around Rennes in France (check them out if you are in the area), but hadn’t had the pleasure to hear Chakana’s productions before. This tune is a constant progression and develops profound sounds, with new elements and superb vocals that come & go in such a smooth way that you are taken into a progressive psychedelic tropical journey right into the Andes !

Shika Shika – Flavour of the Month – Barrio Lindo

https://soundcloud.com/shikashikacollective/flavour-of-the-month-enero

And you can keep on travelling with the Second mixtape in the Flavour of the Month series on Shika Shika, which was released at the end of January and mixed by Barrio Lindo. It’s a beautiful hour long smooth tropical trip around the globe with a great selection of tunes, including some amazing forthcoming releases which I had the pleasure to discover.

Dj Turbo Boom-Boom – Tropical Hit Parade 2016

https://soundcloud.com/djturboboomboom/tropical-hit-parade-2016-turbo-boom-boom/comment-269806362

“3 hours Tropical Beat & Tropical Bass demo mix 2016”

It’s not often that you have 3 hours of spare time to listen through a mix of that length, but when you do, or when you have a few mates at home for a few drinks, you’ll be glad to have this great selection by the French Dj Turbo Boom-boom. Originally from the Grenoble and Saint-Etienne area, where he is still involved in the organization of several tropical parties such as ‘Tropical Clash’, he is now based in Paris and ready for some action ! This mix covers it all, in a really nice varied way, with classics, older tunes and recent releases of Cumbia, TropicalBass, Afro, Caribbean, Latin, Champeta, Kuduro, Tribal, Bullerengue ..

Perro Agradecido – Mata Hari Spy Dance (Official Video)

A cool new video came out last month from the Mexican psychedelic cumbia band Perro Agradecido. Might be a good opportunity for us ‘guiris’ to take note and learn a few moves.

This video reminded me to listen to their last album again,’Ánima en Pena’, which came out last summer. Pure psychedelic chicha business ! It’s amazing.

La Yegros – Chicha Roja (Official Video) (Soundway Records)

La Yegros is coming back at us with a new album in March: ‘Magnetismo’, to be released on the great label Soundway Records. Meanwhile, here is a really cool animated video for one of the tracks on the album. It’s sounding & looking great: full of life, with a catchy rhythm, traditional instrumentals, subtle electronic hints, her lovely voice,…. ! As most of you will be, we are really looking forward to and are curious to hear the whole album. Keep your eyes out.

A Musical Journey – ZZK Films

“A Musical Journey is a documentary film exploring the story of the Argentine digital cumbia movement accompanying a band as they tour across Europe for the first time.”

ZZK Films brings to us a great insight into La Yegros’ band’s first European Tour, as well as a great outlook on the label itself, and an interesting overview of the development and growing of this tropical/cumbia scene all over Europe. It’s really worth a watch.

For all English speakers, the documentary is subtitled !

Keep informed about all forthcoming ZZK Films on http://zzkfilms.com/

THE SILLY TANG:

Celia Cruz – Virgencita (Happy Colors Remix) (Fania Records)

I have to say I was gobsmacked when I saw this title appear on Fania Record´s soundcloud page. Celia Cruz remixed by the one and only Happy Colours. It has both the Celia and the Colours vibe and it creates this unique piece of sublime music.

Zurvolt – Shake (Caballito Netlabel)

Once again Caballito brings us some pure niceness ! This time it is the producer called Zurvolt who brings us this Ep “Tentacion” which to be honest is an all in one banger release! I love the production and the dark edge to some of these tunes. I choose this particular one because it has this kind of Dinamarca sound. Very dark but still very dancehall orientated.

Tropical Terror – Crujiente (Caballito Netlabel)

While I´am talking about Caballito, this is another work that was put out this month on their label. Watch out! This one is much more Cumbia orientated and has the perfect twisted psychedelic flavours we all love. Get a snake and start teaching him how to dance 😉

Radio Rebajado Vol.3 (Rebajado Mx)

https://soundcloud.com/rebajadomx/radio-rebajado-vol3

Rebajadoooooo ! I wanted to mention this radio show somewhere on the blog as it is a show I follow regularly. On this mix you can get some previews of some tracks by our hermano El Barba Dub, El Buho o Los Brujos. A very fine selection of lovely cumbia. Big up Radio Rebajado !

Turbo Sonidero Mix for Club Chai

Now this mix ! Once again THIS MIX ! I came across it at the beginning of the month and I truly love it ?¡ All the cumbia versions are very solid and it has this slight twist which makes the whole mix a very trippy journey ! Big up Turbo Sonidero everytime !

Bigote – Xiloton (Caballito Netlabel)

The new village grime favourite Mr Bigote once again hits us with this dope beat. Following the lines of artists such as the N.A.F.F.I crew, this track has the ability to make you feel intensely strange and make you brock out at the same time.

HNRY – Dónde estás Satanás!

Here we have it for me; The banger of the month. This track brought to us by HRY is a real pleasure to the ear for me, as I love the original. The re-edit of it sounds great. Minimal work but a true refix that keeps a real nice deep production. Been listening to this on loop all month !

Kumbia Boruka – Live 2015

Kumbia Boruka is a group originated from Lyon, France and when I caught a glimpse of this live video it really made me want to dig more into what they do and maybe try to get myself to Lyon to see them live¡ Wicked old school sounding cumbia band¡

COCONUTAH:

La Sound – Diplo’s Riddim (Cumbia Reboot)(WorldwideMX)

Take your shoes off and get your booty shaking, this lovely bit of cumbia injected tropical funk really does the job. It combines catchy accordeon hooks with a lovely guitar and some sweet, sweet electronic atmos including everything from vocal cuts to party lasers. A nice fresh tune that makes you wish summer were here already!

DJ Caution – Donna Summer Vs Fito Olivares

One of the main protagonists of Madrid’s explosing tropical scene, Caution never fails to blend his sense of humour with a sense for the dancefloor. This Mash up features Donna Summer and Fito Olivares, an 80´s disco classic combined with a cumbia booty shaker. I haven´t had the opportunity to play this in the club yet but as usual it’s pretty tight and I can just imagine the happy faces!

Haris Pilton – Green Mamba 2016 (cumbia version)

Haris Pilton is back with a trademark Balkan Cumbia style, mixing catchy eastern riffs from a variety of instruments with mad vocals and a stepping beat. It also espouses a dub influence – I´m pretty sure this will sound good on a big system. Big up!!

Pablo Pachacutik – Afro-Andino (Hermanados En El Ritmo) (Regional)

Regional Label always brings something slightly different to the table. This release is no exception and sees Pablo Pachacutik bring us some cumbia mentalism. The album boasts a variety of style and features an avalanche of crazy sounds, where trippy synths mix with futuristic influences to great effect. Roll one up – it is a very interesting listen.

Club Popozuda Mixtape #42 (Andrés Digital)

https://soundcloud.com/clubpopozuda/club-popozuda-mixtape-42-andres-digital

As usual from Andres Digital, expect an absolute belter of a mix for this 42nd mixtape from club Popozuda. He mixes guiros with ragga, tropical bass and moombah with a dancefloor vibe. Check the tracklist out, and enjoy the tunes. Don´t forget to get your lighter out!

Tincan – Ora Esatta Cumbia Edit

This is some experimental orchestral cumbia business! Epic uplifting melodies blend with lazer sounds with some crazy electronic beats for a pounding backdrop. Tincan brings some very original ideas to cumbia here, got to love the way it drops.

La Inédita – Chicha chicha (Pachanguito Remix)

This is a great piece of music – Pachanguito nails it with a party banger: this has upbeat fast cumbia beats and some great guitars and organs. The vocal touch on the top rounds it off nicely. A track for festivals and the great outdoors as it has a very summery vibe, it no doubt will work in the club just as well.

Cumbia With Colors (Dj Neber)

DJ Neber has undoubtedly been polishing his Hip hop cumbia style for a long time, and it really shows with a nicely executed stepper. Rootical colombian cumbia with hard hitting beats!

Folcore 050 – Sampler

This album was only slightly too late to fit into our last edition, so we were keen to make it up this time. This is a nicely varied LP with a nice mix of artists. There are some great cumbias, a few tropical dancefloor numbers, but also some tasty experimental / chill out bits. Listened to as a continuous LP, I found it really put me into a space, hitting me in all the right places. Check it out, there is something for everyone in this Folcore release.

CONSPIRACIONES TROPICALES MADRID, VOL1

Madrid´s tropical music scene has been making waves for a good couple of years, and, like a tropical avalanche, the progression seems to grow at exponential speed. Aside from the many parties that take place week in week out (special mention goes to Guacamayo Tropical, Sonidero Mandril, Manglar, and the many other very special events one can have the pleasure of attending), the radio shows (La Selva), Madrid´s tropical scene is also special for the collective it has progressively spawned, Conspiraciones Tropicales.

A meeting point where the city´s artists come together to promote the scene and culture, organise events, and showcase Madrid´s finest tropical creations.

After a long tropical winter, one of the collective´s many projects has borne its fruits. This one will get you sweating so hard you will remember the experience. Conspiraciones Tropicales Vol1 showcases a special part of Madrid´s nightlife, and the album certainly provides a tasteful example of what to expect in these gatherings.

Featuring a very special mix of tracks, Los Candeleros kick things off with a trippy chicha track. 2G1B delivers a killer 8 bit track featuring Secta Selectah, DJ Caution does his thing and gives us a funky Dembow that will rock any dancefloor, while Cholofoniks follows with an incredibly rolling experimental cumbia.

Guacamayo tropical brings the Jungle didjeridoo madness: Tropical Yisus´ contribution is a tasteful 80´s remix, and la Tremenda Jauria have an atmosperic electronic cumbia (beautiful!). Skywaka shakes up the dance with a lifting champeta, and Coconutah & Kaygee bring marimba flavours to 2016. Finally, the Silly tang offers an incredible dancefloor remix of a Juaneco classic!

The compilation was released on the 15th of February thanks to CASSETTE BLOG (BIG UP!), and is available for free download:

Conspiraciones Tropicales-Compilado Vol 1 (por Pablo Borchi – Exclusivos Cassette)

We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we did 🙂

Thanks to all for reading as always, and see you next month!

SEXY SATURDAY CUMBIA

sex at 4

Art by Tropi Delia

Here we go with our fourth edition of sexy saturday cumbia – may 2016 be the most year tropical so far!

2015 was a year full of great releases, nice cumbia related surprises, and amazing new artists pushing through. These new additions combined with the old heads bringing out some incredible material has meant it has been a real pleasure to be involved. This year seems to be kicking off in style right away: the selection below is representative of this trend with some very recognizable names, and some less so. Cuuuummmmbiaaaaa!

KAYGEE recommends:

Scotch Bonnet – The Stinger (SidiRum Edit) (Sonido Trópico)

It had to happen and here it is: a Scotch Bonnet tune with a heavy guiro on it! Big up SidiRum for this lovely Cumbia Edit of ‘The Stinger’. This would be a great one to drop in the UK, where shakers and tropical shirts are still in a shady area growing slowly but surely. This edit, which is downloadable for free, is part of the ‘Sonido Trópico Vol.1’ compilation, which I have listened to many times and appreciate in different ways and from a different approach every time. The tracklist looked promising, and the result is wicked. The selection of artists englobes a wide range of influences and genres all found in today’s nucumbia/tropical scene, well represented in all of the tunes. Make sure to check the whole compilation out.

Nochi – Cumbia de la Flores EP (Caballito)

Caballito dropped a fabulous remix EP of Nochi’s ‘Cumbia de las Flores’. The original mix shows pure cumbia vibes, with a heavy beat and a few darker subs and basslines, to create a great tune overall. On top of that, you can enjoy 5 great different remixes by top producers Bigote, Caballo, Dj Neber, El Búho and Tribilin Sound, who all added their personal touch in a really interesting way.

Paloma del Cerro – – Para Bien Remixes

(Listen & Download the whole compilationfor free on https://palomadelcerro.bandcamp.com/ )

I have listened to this compilation several times and tried to select one tune for this blog which would best represent it, but I couldn’t. They are all so different, yet all representing the scene of the moment in their own way. 17 remixes with influences of techno, house, psytrance, drum&bass, tribal, bass, experimental, etc. It is great to hear so much diversity in one compilation, and great to discover so many new artists in it who I had never heard of, amongst the other big names.

Joás Santos – Rio Azul (Kurup Edit)

You couldn’’t classify this as traditional cumbia, but the beat, the shakers and the organic sounds used definitely bring us to a Latin American rain forest, where the atmosphere is dense and tropical, and where the sounds of nature are omnipresent. Great tune!

Lascivio Bohemia – Pobrecito mi Cigarro (Mashup Mexico Soberbio Music & Pa Changes)

Great remix by Lascivio Bohemia, who seems to be on top form these days, releasing a huge amount of wicked tunes and remixes. This one, part of the 30 tune EP, Chico Che – El Tributo, seemed to be special one for him, remixing the classic ‘Pobrecito mi Cigarro’, and he nailed it! Wicked remix in which he brings the original tune to the dancefloor with a heavy beat and potent electronic melodies.

Dj Neber  -– Amar Es Tortura (Kumbale)

I hadn’t heard anything from Dj Neber in a while and was pleased to see this release on Kumbale. The name of the Ep is pretty deep, translated as ‘To Love is Torture’, but it’s actually quite representative of the selection of Dj Neber’s remixes used for this ep; as you can also tell when listening to the lyrics he used. To these relatively melancholic atmospheres, he manages to create a special vibe by adding a heavy hip-hop beat, giving the original tune a nice added groove to it.

Kosta Kostov – Zukiada feat. BxPs (Rocky Marsiano Remix) (Cassette Blog)

Another great ep has dropped: Zukiada – Kosta Kostov + Remixes. Here, Rocky Marsiano brings a slightly heavier cumbia and electronic approach to Kosta Kostov’s original tune, whilst keeping a lot of the original vibe. Make sure to check the whole ep, as they are all bangers. The synth in the original mix is simply amazing! We had the pleasure of enjoying one of Kosta’s sessions on a beach in Croatia 2 years ago @ Goulash Disko festival, pure global lushness for a sunny afternoon!

Tribilin Sound – Barrancore (TropiKhongo Remix)

I never really know what to expect with TropiKhongo and that’s what I love about him. This is a cool remix of Tribilin Sound’s tune Barrancore, in which TropiKhongo managed to keep Tribilin Sound’s deep and progressive atmosphere, which I really enjoy, whilst adding a nice catchy cumbia beat to it.

Now here are two beautiful chilled out mixes to finish off my selection:

Shika Shika –- Flavour of the Month

I think every time El Búho does a mix, I have it on repeat until the next one he does; and it’s just happened again. Here, he presents the first mix for Shika Shika: December’s flavour. Every time I listen to it, I enjoy new parts of it. So many great tunes, so many new artists for us to discover, it’s an all in one journey to be enjoyed over and over again.

Zlow & Low –- Rafael Aragon

Last but not least, one of La Selva’s very good friends, with whom we will have the pleasure of mixing in Rodez (Fr) on February 27th: Rafael Aragon. You’ll usually find him rinsing out dancefloors around 4-6am, but you’ll also discover a more chilled, world/ethnic and psychedelic side to him a few hours later in sessions like this one for the Portuguese program Zlow and Low. It’s a true journey around the world, but with your eyes closed! Love it!

THE SILLY TANG recommends:

Jomax La Farra – Cumbia de mi Tierra

I will start this first wintery selection with this heart warming tune. It´s an all time classic re-worked into a very clever and ear catching hit for a perfect dancefloor warmer 🙂
Bigote – Lean ft. Danni Mastah (Kumbale)

Bigote is like the grime badman every village wants! This tune has such energy and atmosphere that it had to come out from such a forward producer. This is much more of a soundboy track that will blend in the more obscure parts of the cumbia gene.

Love Carnival – Mango Park – Bajo Latino Mix

There he is! Mr Mango Park huge selektah is getting super props up in Bristol. He has been a good friend and a huge inspiration to the whole bristol tropical scene! I have to say hands down to a true pioneer in our city.

Qechuaboi – – Blahblahblah Ep (Folcore)

Out on the infamous Folcore, Mr Qechuaboi has cooked a very weird, slight sub genre cumbia. The production and mastering on this is so tight it might open the fridge for you! Once again this will fit perfectly into a darker set of the tropical genre.

Haris Pilton – – Cumbia Raggatiko

https://soundcloud.com/harispilton/haris-pilton-cumbia-raggatiko

My main eastern connection! They call him the him the Ragga cumbialist, jeje. No, honestly this song is a great mashup from the one and only Haris Pilton. This man gets his hands dirty on any kind of style. And his vocal capabilities are so sexy!

Sistema Beat Andino – Todo Sigue Igual (Aconcamarga Colectivo)

Waow waow waow and, well, WAOW! I came across this half breed of Cumbia and heavy dub and it sounded so good! A new producer to my ears, the great Sistema Beat Andino drops the very subtle but nevertheless great track called “Todo Sigue Igual” – for all dub and soundmen out there!!!!

The Gardener – Caballito Mixtapes

To finish my selection for this month Generation Bass I wanted to highlight this very obscure but full of vibes mix from The Gardner on Caballito´s netlabel! A great mix for after party of simply when you feel a bit mental of to much cafeine!

COCONUTAH recommends:

Freak Castro – La Cumbia Ninja (Tropikore Sensei Remix)

Tropikore always seems to hit the dancefloor spot nicely in his productions and this remix is no exception, with a nice upbeat feel and good progression. Different synths spiral in and out whilst a pounding eclectronic drum rhythm marks the beat. The intro sets a nice cumbia vibe, and when it drops, trippiness and danciness are on the menu!

Lascivio Bohemia & Dealer Kid – Take Off your Shoes and Dance (Edmoon Records)

https://soundcloud.com/edmoonrec/lascivio-dealerkid-takeoff

There is already a lascivio bohemia tune in this edition, but I couldn´t resist including this Cumbia jungle banger. It starts of as a bassy cumbia belter with trippy synths and a nice dubby feel, moves into some slightly dirtier mids – and then turns you upside down with a wicked jungle breakcore drop. The rhythm changes are absolutely amazing. Take off your shoes and dance!

Cumbia Drive – The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme)

Carefully coinciding with the release of the latest episode of starwars, this tune feeds us a bit of the saga, differently. Classic polished upbeat Cumbia drive beats accompany the famous theme tune, alternating between light and darker atmospheres. Very nicely put together, listen to this if you want to meet darth vader.

Erick Jaimez – El Danzon

https://soundcloud.com/erickjaimez/erick-jaimez-el-danzon

Erick Jaimez kicks off the year with a cumbia trap banger, a nice rebajada remix starting with a sweet mexican cumbia atmosphere. The drop into trap is expected but doesn´t disappoint, and brings such a low sub that your neighbours will thank generation bass for it.

Salvador Araguaya – Fumo de Cobra (Sonido Trópico)

Part of Sonido Trópico   Vol.1, covered higher up in the blog by Kaygee, Salvador Araguaya presents an amazing amazon jungle tinted cumbia, where tribal voices and wooden flutes combine with psychedelic organs to keep you grooving all along. Nicely progressive from a drum perspective, it starts of slow with some soft bongos, before building into meatier kicks, snares, and claps. As said previously, be sure to check this great compilation out.

Territorio Comanche ft. Puloy – Cumbia Resistencia

Territorio Comanche is back with a tasty beat, kicking off with a nice cumbia build up with a mix of several instruments and synths that fit together real nicely. When it drops, the vocal is a nice surprise, and delivers a relentless energy to the tight, constantly evolving beats. There are loads of layers of bongos and many other surprises, check it out!

We hope you enjoy the selection. Once again a tropical new year to everyone!!

Remember when we mentioned rumors of an exclusive Cocotaxi mix for La Selva? Well we had the pleasure of ending 2015 with it. Make sure to check it out:

Thanks again to both of them!

Doma Tornados : Cumbia Cuantica [DubTech Cumbia]

Great new DubTech Cumbia release by our friend Doma Tornados who curated the awesome SoundAmerica Compilation series for our blog in the early days. He’s also a great producer to boot and this is his latest creation Dubtech Cumbia!

Would have preferred the first track as a pure instrumental or with the omission of the “how low can you go” sample and it needed to be at least twice in length, time-wise, as it just gets going and then it ends but you want it to carry on. I hope a longer/extended edit becomes available totalling at least 8 minutes in length as it could be quite a stomper for the dance floor.

The second track, the slow dub version has the length, 14 minutes in total and is full of ambient shoegazey atmosphere and anticipation.

Great stuff and free:

Qechuaboi – Topiqé?

One of the most creative members of the Cumbia Digital revolution is inarguably Qechuaboi. His weapon of choice is Korg Electribe, which is one hell of a machine. As far as hardware goes for electronic music production, you can’t beat the EMX-1 in my opinion. Perhaps your opinion is different but I’d need a seriously convincing debate in order to change my mind on this matter. And Qechuaboi has mastered it.

Qechuaboi, while difficult to spell his name correctly, is not difficult to spot when it comes to his distinct sound. Cherman of Folcore brought him to my attention a year or two ago and he’s had my attention ever since.

Now Folcore releases his latest EP titled Topiqé? it’s a lovely three track EP featuring the above mentioned distinct Qechuaboi sound. A free download, this is a good return both from Folcore and from Qechuaboi.

Folcore has another dope release to add to their busy EP release week. Tropical Terror is a force to be reckoned with. The new EP Midnight Trooper is intense. Mixing Cumbia and Electro into  Tropical Bass goodness, this Salvadorian artist shows us something new and very interesting.

The EP has three tracks, two originals titled Midnight Trooper and Cochinaza, along with a remix of Midnight Trooper by Luis Andino.
