SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – MARCH

Artwork by Tropi Delia

Here we go with March´s Sexy Saturday Cumbia selection. Summer is coming and there are millions of tropical cumbialistic goodies about. Here is this month´s finest – we hope you enjoy:

The Silly Tang selected:

Baja Frequencia – Que Calor

So this month I had to start my selection with this 100% HIT! From start to finish, this piece of music is pure dancefloor attitude and warmth!!! QUE CALOR!!!???

I have to say my good friends Baja Frequencia sent me this on a preview and I had the pleasure of rinsing it out on many dancefloors and oh my god, when that juke madness kicks in people go nutsoid! No joke! This production is getting Baja Frequencia onto bigger platforms and this hit is coming out on a double sided 7inch press on the all mighty Chinese man records.

SUPERSAN ft. Princesa – Musica Del Barrio

One of the best Djs I have ever seen out (in Goulash disko festival) and a truely nice person have come in combination between Panama Cardoon (Carnibal) and Mister Kentro (Balkan Riddims). The whole album is called “Half man, Half Clap” and is full of wonder, all recorded across various parts of the world. This particular track is probably the most cumbia orientated one hence why I chose it. A wicked featuring with a singer called Princesa this is for me THE summer hit J

Massive Attack – Teardrop (Tribilin Sound Remix)

Hit after hit I´m telling ya! We can definitely see that spring has arrived as all the major and minor cumbia producers are bringing the big guns they have been cooking for us all summer. I think every single post I have made in this blog has contained a track by the teacher aka the Tribilin Sound! This particular remix of his went straight to my heart, being from Bristol this anthem has had a lot of impact within the music panorama in our home city. Also I really love the way this is a pure cumbia but still as so much texture, put the volume up listen to this thin crackle, the heavy bass mid that comes in at the beginning, LISTEN TO IT J enjoy guys!

Sonora Machaca – Señora Mamacha (Regional Label)

Now for the first Ep of this month, I present to you the trio Sonora Machaca, the name itself it a hit J This Ep out on the world famous Regional label was cooked by Lufo (Bass), Qechuaboi (Rythm) y Rolo (melodies). I totally recommend, at first listen in the morning for pure energetic effect, the track titled “Ayahuasker”. Pure acid madness rince out. Really really love this Ep big ups J

A M A M B A Y 100 000 – El Leones

This producer has been very very consistent in bringing clean, quality and interesting cumbia rythms. On this particular track he has brought a lot of people to work together, here is the list of participants: Worked in the Studios Lauzanette, In France, music written by : AMAMBAY 100 000, lyrics: El Fino / Eskina Qom. Many of a time a I do not get to meet the people I publish on this blog, but this time Amambay 100 000 will be in Europe from May and hopefully we will be able to hear those lovely horns live in our radios how J

Ambivalent – R U OK (Kraut’s Minimal Cumbia Version)

Still carrying on with the big guns I have chosen to publish this track because I think the simplicity but the curves on this stems are amazing. I had never come across a Kraut track that had these cumbia fills but I have to say I love it. The very slowed down vocal also adds a lil “rebajado effect” which always hits my inside J Very nice track for a opening tune or maybe a dark after party 😉

Thornato – El Oro De La Tolita feat. Grupo Taribo (Wonderwheel Recordings)

One of the biggest players in the game has brought out his musical genius to us once again. I have been a fan of Thornato for years and always loved his work. When I heard he was bringing new material I got very excited and now I cannot stop playing it out or in my home all the time. I think he has really grasped the struggle sound that makes this music so beautiful. In Madrid here we sometimes say that my hermano el Coconutah is the Marimba king, but here he is getting some challenges by the Thornato. Very very big track indeed for everyone to enjoy J

Sunka – Colombian Party (Galletas Calientes Rec.)

So Who Knows about the big mighty producer SUNKA now? Who knows about Galletas Calientes? Well I do and you all should to by now! I have posted a preview last month so I wont say to much on this apart from, run go tell your friends.

Kazike en Estado de trance – cumbia de la buena para Conspiraciones tropicales en la 88.6 fm.

This is an honour, a privilege and of course a pleasure to present this mixtape to you guys. I have a lot to say about this mixtape as it has a lot of angles to be covered. First of all the man behind it is my cumbia teacher. Yes you heard right, before meeting Kazike en Estado de Trance about 6 years ago now I had no idea what cumbia was. So imagine my excitement when he recorded this mix to present different types of cumbias to us. Now then to talk about our posse, crew called Conspiraciones Tropicales. We have started to run a weekly show on every Friday from 21h till 22h. You can get logged in at 88.6 FM. You will hear a lot of quality music and projects from all of us down here in the wild Madrid city.

Dj Guaguis (Ali Gua Gua) – FOREVER ALONE

Now now now J A Mexican female producer I have never come across but that I really like. The beat production is amazing and I thought I would post a little something of her works. It seems like she is very female orientated which I believe is a must in the cumbia and all musical world. You can hear a very deep cumbia production with hints of electro resonating in your ears. The vocal is pure protest and romance which I believe is a pure cumbia combo 😉 Big ups Dj Guaguis!

El Cifickzer- Kumbia Impresionante (Rebajado Mx)

Mr El Cifickzer and Rebajado mix did you say? Well it seems this way! So here it is this cumbia producer -who I love the simplicity of – is bringing us a very very dark cumbia with hints of murder, blood and satan J A very basic selection for all your sunny summer sets J No honestly this track has a lot of dark vibes and me like it.

Kaygee selected:

Cerrero feat. Lucía Pulido – Pedacito de esperanza (Nicola Cruz remix) (llorona records)

WAOW ! Nicola Cruz strikes again. This is an absolute tuuuune ! It has a catchy deep & dense bassline with a relatively minimal but potent beat all brought together with Lucía Pulido’s chant !!! And that flute/gaita just hits the spot ! This tune has been on repeat for the past 8 days, and will stay as so for a good while.

(P.S: check out his soundcloud, where he’s dropped some very sweeeeet previews of forthcoming releases)

Mr Toé Feat Bima Inuma. – NOSOTROS

We move on straight into another journey, but this time in the hands of Mr Toé. I always love his work, and he has once more shown his skills. He has a very ritualistic and repetitive approach, which brings in a slow trance feeling, bringing you right into the middle of the jungle with all these lovely atmospheres.

AUMA – A Thing Called Cumbia (Edmoon Records)

We’ll stay into the deep vibes and travel with Edmoon Record’s forthcoming new release: AUMA.

“AUMA is mestizaje, is water and oil, is traditional ecuadorian music and strange sounds of the future.” This track is a preview single of his upcoming debut album, to be released in april, leaving us eager to hear the rest.

ElPeche – Rosas Bandidas (Pigmalião Remix) (Tropical Twista Records)

We’re moving towards a slightly more electronic and dancefloor approach to today’s scene, and this is a great example of how well it can work. It’s part of an ElPeche remix EP that has just been released on Tropical Twista Records, and Pigmalião has really managed to fuse his imprint into an already incredible tune.

Álvaro Llerena Martínez – Vaca Paria (Rafael Aragón Remix) [Premiere THUMP]

And while we’re on the dancefloor, let’s keep on skanking with this great remix by our beloved friend: Rafael Aragon ! We’ve all heard him rinse out dancefloors with this massive build up for a good while now, and I never get bored of it. You can finally enjoy it at home, with an exclusive première on THUMP.

Lagartijeando – Antofagasta de la Sierra (El Búho’s Diurnal Remix) (WONDERWHEEL Recordings)

Another great release on Wonderwheel Recs.; this label has been dropping some great material recently and it looks like there’s loads more to come. This one is a remix of one of Lagartijeando’s tracks from his forthcoming album by the one and only El Búho and as always, he ‘s nailed it. It’s a really atmospheric yet rhythmical tune, with really pure and crispy sounds; I love it !!!

Felipe Granda – Janaxpacha (Canal Dub)

The journeys don’t stop this month ! This track is part of an incredible 2 part compilation, which you can download and enjoy for free thanks to Canal Dub !!! Absolute big ups for these compilations, which always bring out new and different rhythms & sounds from all over the place, and have brought to me many new artists who I didn’t know (thank you!). For example: Felipe Granda, with this track. We enter a darker side of things, with a crunchy and profound vibe, echoed & synthed out to psych-up the whole thing beautifully.

Barrio Lindo Feat. Lulacruza (Shika Shika)

http://remezcla.com/releases/music/barrio-lindo-otono-primavera-track-premiere/

Make sure you click on the above link and enjoy this premiere of Barrio Lindo’s forthcoming album on the all mighty label Shika Shika, featuring the wonderful Lulacruza for this track. Keep your ears out for the whole thing, it will be dropping in digital format on April 6th, followed by a limited Vinyl edition.

Quantic & Nidia Gongora – Que me duele ? (Tru Thoughts Records)

Aie aie aie ! Pero que me duele ? When my sister sent the link of this tune after it just showed up on the web, my day started with a full buzz of sunshine and positive energy, and I’m sure a lot of you here with enjoy this bit of curulao! The vocal is stunning, the rhythm is insane, the marimba is next level: It has it all !!! This is our first taste of what’s to come on Quantic’s forthcoming album, and it’s looking great.

Pata De Perro – Live @ TBF2016

For those who like a bit of live business, here’s an extract of Pata de Perro’s performance last year. A wonderful mixture of afro-caribbean sounds with a lovely dose of dubbed out effects, synths and guitars.

La Dame Blanche – Dos Caras (feat. Celso Piña & Serko Fu)

So this one was a great surprise for me. It’s not usually the type of rhythm and vocals that do it for me, but I don’t know if it’s Celso Piña’s dubbed out accordion that did it or what, but it’s FAT !

Polymiller- Cumbia Vocoder

And while you’re on youtube, you must check this spaced out disco cumbia business; just enjoy the experience.

Yo soy la Cumbia – Teaser – Documental

Here’s another great insight into Cumbia for us to look forward to, with an hour long documentary, which will be brought to us by YO SOY LA CUMBIA.

Coconutah selected:

Nicola Cruz – Danza De Vision (Multi Culti )

Another tune from Nicola in this month´s edition, I know. However this one is a tasty flute based groovy cumbia – Im sure it sounds banging on the dancefloor! The lovely flute riffs are complemented by a pulsing cumbia rhythm that makes great use of percussion to get the flow going. Check it out!

Jin Yerei – Vos Solo (El Remolon Remix) (Fertil Discos)

Part of Jin Yerei´s “Foráneo, Cálido, Pasmoso” remixes (part 1) that features versions from Barda, San Ignacio, dj DJ Karen, and Camanchaca (amongst others), this version of vos solo by El Remolon is a great electro cumbia re-dub of the original that will really get you travelling. Light and airy highs and pounding percussion accompany the arpeggiated synth beautifully, while added synths add to the psychedelic atmospheres. This tune, as well as the rest of the album, is amazing!

Jin Yerei – Introspection (Cha.Cho Remix) (Fertil Discos)

So here we go with part two, with killer tunes by another selection of awesome artists from around the globe. Here is Cha.Cho´s of Yin Jerei´s “Introspection”, a deep tribal affair better enjoyed at high volumes and in an inebriated state. Trippy, squelchy synths and syncopated percussion ride rolling high hats; this is fat! Big up to all artists involved.

Baru – The white elephant

Travel to a very deep, dark place where the sun is just about to rise with Baru´s white elephant. Didjeridoo, Balafons, and organic percussion create a lovely melodic layer that contrasts with an awesome “underwater” feel. Sexy cumbia beats pulsing underneath round it all off nicely to create a great atmospheric track.

Tropikore – Pa bailala en kimono (Feat. Rocko Akordeon & CBass) (Le Ronca Records)

Here is a killer dancefloor cumbia by Tropikore featuring Rocko Akordeon & CBass. This will rock any party with a fat cumbia techno vibe, some distorted, cut up vocals, some dirty mid range growls and wobbles, and a huge sub bassline! Check it out!

Pico Gallo – We Cum In Piss Drownnwu -ściągać, pobierać !!!

Dark and disturbing vibes here by Polish producer Pico Gallo. “We cum in piss” is a take on the famous sample from Mars attack, complete with an original, rolling cumbia beat, and some extraterrestrial synths and basslines. It certainly sounds like Alien abduction – come and ride the spaceship!

Saludos a todos, and see you next month for more delicious sounds !!!

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – DECEMBER

Artwork by Tropi Delia

So this is the last post from us for 2016 ! We believe 2016 was a very hard year for some but in general Cumbia has helped us through it and gave us that big smile we hope you are all having whilst reading this. Thank you so much for keeping this blog alive and generally giving us the love to carry on writing about this magical music.

THE SILLY TANG SELECTED

Kazike en Estado de Trance Mixtape 032 – Festival Nomade Colombia

To start my selection I have the pleasure and honour to present this absolute badman mix from a person that is very important to me! Yes: Kazike en Estado de Trance is his name and he is the person who taught me everything I know about classical vintage cumbia. A great person and also a great maestro. Here he presents to us a really well put together mix for the Colombian festival that is “Nomade” organised by Mr Toe. Enjoy!

La Orrorosa Feat. El Hijo De La Cumbia – Infeccion Tropikal

So now let’s get started with the cumbia punk, one of my favourite fusions within this musical scene. New track from La Orrorosa of the disc “infección tropical” with the participation of Emiliano Gomez (El Hijo de la Cumbia). The rhythm and vocals couldn’t go better together to be honest. Really powerful track which I recommend to any Cumbia-Punk lover.

Jota Karloza – Ugate Sooraj (SolSelectas)

So as I might have said before since I saw Barrio Lindo this summer I truly discovered a love for this downtempo minimal stuff and I have to say it is growing J On this particular track Jota Karloza brings us some deep ethnic vocals on a really rounded bassline. The label “Sol Selectas” always brings us the cream of the crop and on this one they have really upped the game once more. Recommended for any time spent on the beach or as my partner in crime would say in any hammock 😉

VIVOTROPICAL – Cumbia De Los Pajaritos (cover De Los Mirlos)

Who has seen “Stranger Things “? Well if you have, this is the Cumbia version of the synthesised soundtrack. Well not really as El Búho brought a version a while back. But you will see what I mean when you press play on this track. VIVOTROPICAL is a producer I have just discovered who seems very fluid and locked on his synth game! The beat is nice but very simple and lineal with this main guiro line, but the main work is in the composition and deepness of the effects. Brilliant vibes and I believe this has already reached our alien friends in outer space!

Metralleta De Oro – Doing Time (Sumohair Remix)

YES! It seems like Sumohair lives in a constant summer state, more productions he brings out, the more I need sun, cocktail and chilling L.A style. This refix of the classical “Sublime” track is all to love. Nicely made bassline rounding up some light drum breaks followed by some ragamuffin arrangements. What is there not to like about this eh? So go on if it is rainy or grey where you are close the curtains, get a cocktail and put volume on full blast!

Fokus – Amazonico

When Eastern Europe meets Colombian cumbia what does it give you, you might ask? Well I will reply with great joy: this is what it gives you. An absolute belter of a tune J a truly inspirational and nice friend has brought me this killer track a few weeks back and wow. He has also asked me to work on a colab with him so watch out in 2017 for the Fokus vs Silly tang stuff to appear. Coming back on this track with an amazing effort from a Jungle producer background and as always a superb construction with deep subs to get us jumping.

SCBdB – Jeden

So while we are in Eastern Europe I got sent this mix via soundcloud by this upcoming artist called “SCBdB” (be careful about the spelling he is meticulous) 😉 So this amazing journey within the deeper vibes of cumbia has totally rocked my world. On a different tip than the previous mix by KAzike, this takes us on a deeper more electro side of the spectrum. The great news is that you will be able to stream his first performance live on our first show of the radio via our: la Selva Radio J

Los Wemblers de Iquitos – Lamento del Yacuruna (Tribilin Sound Remix)

Back to basics children, back to basics. Every time I see a Tribilin Sound track come up I´m like a kid at Christmas, believe me. So when this appeared and I saw “Los Wemblers” and “Tribilin Sound” on this remix, every day is the 25th of December for me now. Really subtle as always but truly refined tune with this amazing guitar, that backs up the Wemblers. Some psychedelic notes in here and some really echoed out instruments: a perfect combination from the mighty Tribilin Sound aka Alvaro Ernesto.

Julio Inti – Cumbia Dub La Venenosa vol7

Here we have another fusion which I love within this Cumbia world, Dub and Cumbia mixed together in a superb mix brought to us by “Julio Inti”. As you may know this is an area of expertise for me and I have to say hats down to one of the best compiled mix of these two genres meeting each other. Run go tell your friends!

LolaManola – Psicosis Fem & Sziget Fest (presentación)

Here she is, our famous local from Madrid, “ Lola Manola”!! Very young on the capital´s scene, she has really made a great effort and impression on us. We have had the pleasure of hearing her a couple of times now and believe me she knows what she is doing. Here is a mixtape she brought us as promotion for the two nights she rocked in Madrid, “Psicosis tropical” and “Conspiraciones Tropicales”. Get your ears around it and it will make you digest a big New Year lunch or brock out to a pre-new year party J

Aslán Dub System feat. Jef Stott – Soñar (Global Barrio)

The label Global Barrio which is new to me has had an amazing impact bringing some quality music to our ears, thank you Aslan Dub. Trust me this compilation is pure gold! I have chosen this particular track to present it to you because as I said earlier Dub and Cumbia I just love it. But this is not any Dub, the production and slickness of these sounds are real soft and marvellous. Really great, great work thank you so much.

RCA & Tropikhongo – Delicia (Bleepolar Remix) (Regional Label)

Our friends from Regional never sleep, FACT. No, only kidding, but they are really active all the time which is a blessing for our scene. Here is a remixed Ep by RCA & Tropikhongo called Delicia. I chose this version because of its dancefloor potential. I can promise you that this track by the Colombian “Bleepolar” well mixed is a killer for the hips!!!

Turbo Sonidero Presenta: Kumbias Macabras en Acetato (Records)

To end my part of the selection for this year and this month who else than Turbo Sonidero! If you know how to get hold of these guys please contact me via “Silly Tang” as I have some projects but never managed to get in touch J To get back to this mix, it is as always very true and generous on the cumbia level. From the first tune you can hear the purity of the music that these boys bring. I´m a real big fan of this collective.

KAYGEE SELECTED:

Rio Mira – Adios Morena (AYA Records)

This was released just after our post last month and has been on repeat since then ! The original tune is simply fantastic, and is followed by 4 great remixes by Nicola Cruz, Kaleema & Chancha Via Cicuito, M.RUX, and Midnight Ravers. Adios Morena is the first single of Rio Mira’s forthcoming first album ‘Marimba del pacifico’ so make sure you keep en eye out!

Barrio Lindo & Wende Wen – El Humo del Fasito (Damas Gratis cover)

Stream: https://barriolindo.bandcamp.com/track/el-humo-del-fasito-damas-gratis-cover

Barrio Lindo teamed up with Wende Wen for a new ep, which includes this beautiful chilled out cover of Dama Gratis’ tune “El Humo del Fasito”.

Matanza & Oceanvs Orientalis – La Luna Y El Lobo (Jhon Montoya Expedition) (Shika Shika)

Waow waow & waow ! What a great journey !! I love the slow & minimal aspect of the original tune, but I must say Jhon Montoya absolutely nailed it with this remix. The progressiveness and atmospheric violin he adds is just perfect ! That’s another one that has been on repeat for the past month.

El Búho – Mañana En Tepoztlán (Pata De Perro Remix) (Global Barrio)

I’m a big fan of the band Pata de Perro and a huge El Búho fan, so this could only be a winner for me! They have added a proper live dubbed out groove to the original tune and it sounds great! As mentioned above by the Silly Tang, this tune is part of an amazing compilation, Global Barrio’s Vol. 1, so make sure you check out the whole thing.

Mercedes Nasta – Paricutín (El Búho Edit)

The man never stops and it’s becoming a monthly tradition to post about his new tunes and edits, with this one going out to Mercedes Nasta. He’s done it again and manages to take us on a wonderful journey into his world accompanied by Mercedes Nasta’s lovely soothing voice.

LEDA Edits Vol.1 (Fertil Discos & Folcore)

We mentioned their campaign last month and here are the first two versions of this incredible forthcoming double-vynil, which will also include great artists like Chancha Via Circuito, Tremor, Tonolec, Intiche, King Coya, Soema Montenegro, Miriam Garcia and Doma Tornados, among others. For now, here is El Remolon’s deep bass driven remix, and a wicked progressive edit by Barda. You can still support the campaign on: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/el-camino-de-leda-compiling-leda-valladares-music#/

Bomba Estéreo – Raíz (Nicola Cruz Remix)

This is an absolute beauty of a tune! Nicola Cruz just landed! He brings so much texture and depth to the remix, incorporating Liliana Saumet’s voice perfectly ! It’s part of Bomba Estereo’s brand new ‘Amanecer Remixed’ album so get on it while it’s hot !

Señor Chancho Meets El Buga – Conga Dub (Shango Records)

Fresh sounds straight out of Shango Record’s oven with this banger by Señor Chancho & El Buga. Pure dubby tropical sounds with wicked flutes and synths to groove up the whole thing, without forgetting a fat beat and a fat bassline: I love it ! This tune is part of the ‘Bora Bora’s Mist’ Compilation, which is full of other great tunes so make sure you check it out: http://www.junodownload.com/products/bora-boras-mist/3303520-02/

La Walichera – Sendero (King Coya Remix)

Out on La Walichera Remix Vol. 1, here’s King Coya’s cumbia bass remix of the tune Sendero. He brings an original intake to the tune, with very few drums and nearly no kicks but it works really well.

Eduardo Zambrano – Llamacornio (Edmoon Records)

Let’s travel to the Andes with Eduardo Zambrano’s new album. I had been waiting for this one, and it was definitely worth the wait. His music is hard to describe as it covers many genres whilst incorporating different influences, and that’s part of why I love it! He brings a potent electronic touch to the more traditional and emotional side of his tunes, switching from one rhythm to another so smoothly, and always progressing along the tune.

Lascivio Bohemia – La Cumbia Quitapenas

Yes yes and more yes ! Another great project by the above mentioned Eduardo Zambrano is Lascibio Bohemia, and it’s hot ! He goes back to the more traditional side of things on this one and brings to us this beauty, with heavy guiros and powerful flutes! It’s part of a new 3 track EP so hit play and enjoy the whole thing. “This is a tribute to Sixto Silgado, Paito & Los Gaiteros de Punta Brava, life was better after having seen them live”

VA Hystereofônica Vol. 1 (Tropical Twista Records – 2016)

Very happy to hear Tropical Twista’s first compilation entirely dedicated to female artists: “Here we have artists that come from different branches that ensnare the electronic Latin-American scene in the most variable sonic textures and beats per minute. There are twenty-two women involved in this project – and only women – , some already established and some new potencialities among them, gathered by Ágatha Barbosa (Cigarra) in a big net on the Hystereofônica project.”

The Nu LatAm Sound – Ecuador Episode 3 – The Andes Sounds (ZZK Films)

Here’s the third episode of ZZK’s series on new Latin American sounds, focusing this time on Ecuador and the Andes Sound. It’s always a pleasure to watch these episodes. Enjoy ! The fundraiser they had put in place to continue these audiovisual projects was reached so we can expect more to come 🙂

Paloma del Cerro en Tomate la tarde

Nice interview with Paloma del Cerro + live performance on Argentinian TV.

Festival Nomade 2017

For those of us who couldn’t go to this lovely festival in Colombia, here’s a little glimpse of what went on ! Festival Nomade has another editon coming up in Chile so keep an eye out !

Fania Presents: MANANA Cuba Festival

Great insight into the legendary Fania Records label and the recent Manana Festival which took place in Cuba not so long ago, bringing together both traditional and electronic worlds by including a fabulous list of bands and djs.

As always, here are some of the mixes which I have had the pleasure of hearing over the past month:

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – APRIL

pelolargo

Art by Tropi Delia

Welcome to SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA April Edition with la Selva!

It´s almost summer here in Madrid and many other places, so people are getting up and ready to get it on! This calls for an excellent cumbia tracklist to bob along to, so here we go with this month´s selection.

THE SILLY TANG selected:

iLLBiLLY HiTEC ft. Sonido Satanas – Suena

The first track of this month´s Sexy Saturday cumbia is a total hit by absolute hit makers. I have had the pleasure of meeting Sonido Satanas and trust me these guys are the tits. It has also been a while following Illbilly Hitec and all I have for their productions is love and respect. They always produce amazing drum work, and this banger really shows mutual work between the two gangs.

Chucko – Cumbia Pal Body (Original Mix) [ClubSocialTropical]

An excellent Ep brought to us by Club Social Tropical. A very ragga orientated cumbia which drops into a wobble bass. For sure, a dancefloor killer and very tight post production. I had not come across these guys yet, so watch out they are on fire!

Meia-lua – Lord Breu (PRAGATECNO djs)

This is the 2nd time I post on this particular producer and I love the lineal but potent work he does. Lord Bleu ! Oh lord have mercy ! This is a grower and for a sure a very Dj friendly track. For anyone who loves progressive type music this is for you. Real nice track siir ?

Candeleros – Chicha y Wanton (Live Sala Juglar) (Tierra Candela)

Oye oye esos Candeleros ! Our mates Los Candeleros have put up this live version of their first hit single Chicha y Wanton. I particularly like this version as it ends on a sublime dubby outro. Big ups guys lovely live work.

Dazed Dog – Lao Lao

https://soundcloud.com/dazed-dog/dazed-dog-lao-lao

I absolutely love this type of crossbreed music making. Here we have a tight Chilean type intro that breaks into the weirdest and nicest bassline. Dazed dog made this tune free download, so I would suggest to jump on the occasion and grab a bargain banger !

Niggas In Paris Feat YEYO PEREZ (Remix ADRIAN ZA) (Kumbale)

Our brother from Pacha Mama familia, the one and only Secta Selecta brings the hit of this month for me. Featuring our good friend Yeyo Perez, this tune condenses two worlds. The world of Cumbia and the world of Rap music so well. I truly recommend you grab yourself a copy of this marvellous Ep.

Winick – No Comprendo

Our Russian friend Mr Winick loves his darker styles, and this is how we started chatting to each other. On this Ep he presents a proper hybrid of Cumbia which, in all honesty, could just be translated as Russian cumbia styling. Lovely production and very interesting ideas. Check it out !

Taiwan MC – What A Joy (Baja Frequencia remix) (Chinese Man Records)

Here we have the latest remix by the French southerners Baja Frequencia. It’s so hot, it’s very hard to handle ! Trust me daddy! From day one I loved almost all their productions and tracks, and they have gone all out for this DiskoDub Ep remix. Oh what a joy it is to hear this track on repeat 😉

Los Pirañas – Festival Festina Lente discos en *matik-matik*

To finish this month´s selection I wanted to include this live by Los Pirañas. Amazing group which could remind us of The Meridian brothers – or even Los Candeleros. I love the way their band sounds tight but at the same time very laid back. And the entire guitar part just takes me on many journeys ?

Lascivio Bohemia – Afro Andes EP (Edmoon Records)

EP of the month ?! EP of the year ?! If you haven’t heard it, get on it now ! I have had it on repeat for the past 3 weeks, at home, in my car, and when we play out ! Amazing ! I think the great thing about this ep is found in the length and progression of each tune: they never stop evolving, developing and surprising you until the end with new rhythms and broken beats. It’s a powerful experimental electronic trip into the deepness of the Andes ! add some stunning vocals, some Afro touches and a hint of bass and you’re there ! I could go on and on about this EP, I love it, so I simply recommend you hit play and enjoy the while lot. Big ups Edmoon Records & Lascivio Bohemia for this release !

Matanza – Existencia

Ok so this is clearly moving away from the traditional Cumbia, but I am sure a lot of you will enjoy these beautiful sounds as much as I did. Great new tune from Matanza: progressive, organic & tribal journey ! The vocals and the instruments are perfectly accommodated into this deep electronic surrounding. The production is so tight, as always. And to top it off, a remix by Nicola Cruz: proper crunchy business ! (that cowbell is wicked). You can feel his touch adding to the groove whilst keeping the original essence of the tune ! I’m a big fan ! This was announced as the first extract of Matanza’s forthcoming album “Existencia”, so keep your ears open for more sounds !

Lulacruza – Orcas Remixed Vol. 4 (Black Swan Sounds)

For those of you who read this blog on a monthly basis, you will know that it’s a pleasure for me every month to discover 4 new remixes of Lulacruza’s Orcas album (now on Vol 4 of remixes) The first one this month, in Montoya’s hands: boooom ! Proper deep underwater bass business ! So thick and profound ! I can’t wait to hear it on a big sound. That’s another wicked version of ‘Uno Resuena’ to enjoy ! Following a similar chilled vibe, but with less bass, hehe, there’s EVHA remix of ‘Lagunita’: it sounds acoustic and pure ! Really nice. As for Feathericci’s downtempo version of ‘El Agua Abarca’, I really enjoyed the progression in this one – with a nice housey drop half way through. Finally and with a different approach to the others, you can also enjoy a groove to Duke Mushroom’s electro/club remix of ‘Comandante’.

Santos – [10/2/1950]-[23/3/1994]

So this new Santos tune appeared a few weeks ago ! Hell YES ! It’s some kind of Psychedelic tropical spaced out experience ! It’s amazing ! The echoes, the highs, the space business, the fat bass, everything builds up to these amazing ‘Santos synths’ !

San Ignacio – Lo único que hay es el Amor Remixes (Sub Klub Recodrs)

I just about missed it when it came out last month: a really interesting release by San Ignacio, spreading the love, with 3 remixes. The tunes are all really different from one another, but really work together as a release. They go from San Ignacio’s deep eletrobass tropical vibe, to Relo’s chilled touch, to Black Mandingo’s tropical disco twist, finishing with a great dubby remix by Señor Chancho. Nice one !

Saudade – Bonga & Cesária Évora (Thomscat Remix)

I don’t really know how to classify this but that doesn’t matter, it’s a lovely remix, with a wicked progressive gentle beat slowly taking you all the way ! Lovin’ the vibes, even though I think this deserves to be enjoyed on a sunny beach, maybe in or very close to a hammock.

El Búho – The Day Is Mine (special mashup)

It seems that there’s always new tunes from El Buho to share with you guys, he never stops, so hear we go for this time, with a nice chilled ‘owl bass’ mashup, or more precisely: “A Saturday inspired mashup of a wonderful arpeggic 90s harp sample with some ghostly-sweet vocals, a bit more harp and a some swirling bass 🙂 “ as he says. I’m pretty sure this one would fit right in with the previous hammock possibility I just mentioned.

Cumbia de las Flores – Nochi & Jleon (Video Oficial) (Caballito)

You remember when we mentioned the wicked remix EP of Nochi & Jleon’s Cumbia de las Flores released on Cabaillito ? well here’s a brand new video for our pleasure. I’ve said it before but I really like seeing the visual aspect of things taking shape with today’s sounds ! It adds yet another approach and experience to the whole thing. And it’s true, we all love visuals

On another note, it seems that ZZK are launching something new, and it’s looking tasty: AYA RECORDS. http://ayarecords.net/

Please take a look and spread the word. Their work with ZZk has been and still is incredible & revolutionary, and i’m really looking forward to see what they have in the pipeline with this project. There are already 3 sounds that you can discover on their page: Mateo Kingman, Evha & Rio Mira.

Sauvage FM – Cumbia Tierrabomba feat. W (Studio Version) (Vlad)

Oh yes, and to finish off, here’s the badman Sauvage FM ft. W in a wicked studio version of ‘CUmbia Tierrabomba’ ! Big ups to these guys and what they bring to that part of France !

COCONUTAH selected:

Cholazo sound system – Cholazo

This is a stunning introduction to Cholazo sound system from Chile. A nice slice of psychedelic cumbia fully complete with swirling guitars, flutes, chopped up vocal samples, and a nice steady backing groove. The progression of instruments hits the spot and keeps the tune vibing right up until the very last beat, and contrasts with the more electronic drums. Boom tune!

Arrabalero – Llorando-en-monclova

The flavour of the month is definitely twisted and psychedelic as we follow on with a huge tune by Arrabalero. This is hypnotic cumbia trance and really takes you on a trip between the spacey synths, the rebajado vocals and the huge drum mix. You end up cumbia-lobotomised and slighty confused 🙂

Latin bass Mexico Records Volume 5

http://www.latinbassmexico.com/

lbmr05

Another wonderful compilation from Latin bass Mexico Records, expect a variety of different flavours spread over 4 volumes. There´s enough music here to have a full blown rave and there some real nice cuts over the compilations. Check it out, get on the download and rave out! In the meantime, here are some choice cuts:

The Silly tang feat Itus – No Surrender

Huge tune from the Silly Tang featuring Itus, this is a cumbialist dub bomb ready to explode at any time. The intro is hypnotic, with a mix of trippy sounds, beautiful cwind instruments and drums that create an awesome cumbia atmosphere. When some bass drops you´ll feel it, this goes deep down into the deeper regions of bass with an awesome dubby flavour. Temazo!

Tropical Yisus – Volando

Volando by Tropical Yisus is definitely another trippy number. This is fast, body shaking tribal cumbia that will set the dancefloor alight. A pounding bass rides the rhythm whilst eery FX and noises stimulate the listener´s brain in strange places. Check it out!

Jhon montoya – Cumbia de red

Jhon montoya is on full form and as usual his music is very beautiful, and blessed with a sweet organic touch – Cumbia de red combines layers of guitar / charango riffs and solos with deep synths and some soft druims to great effect.

Thank you for reading – we hope you enjoyed the selection and look forward to next month´s even sunnier edition.

Essential EP’s #4

EssentialEPs4

Exciting releases are coming in a much faster tempo than we can keep up with. That’s why you’ll find some older stuff in here too. We’ve got a diverse selection of styles again. With quite a lot of future bass this time, for Generation Bass standards, but also a couple of impressive classic-tropical releases. Add these treasures to your sets and playlists this summer and get a taste of the directions in which music is heading!

Previous essential EP’s >> #1 ; #2 ; #3

1. Shinji Myst LP

Shinji from Paris is one of the most multi-faceted upcoming young producers today, whose deconstructionist style covers everything between kawaii vibes, classical music, witch house and breakcore. I interviewed him earlier this year and there he announced that his track Vers Les Etoiles was going to be part of a bigger release to be called Myst. This extensive 12-tracks long album is finally out now, released by our friends over at internet-underground label URL Future!

If you liked the emotional delicacy of Vers Les Etoiles, the album is a straight eye opener. Listening to it feels like accompanying the producer’s on an ayahuasca trip into the deepest crypts of his inner being. In an interview with Cvltstars blog Shinji explains: “Myst […] has to be read as a contraction of ‘My Mist’. […] The artwork is a modified picture of me holding a coral, surrounded by an opaque fog […] an insight into the tortured mind behind this…” Myst is the musical crystallisation of Shinji’s philosophy: representing the voice of what he calls the ‘singularities’ of this world. The growing number of rejected young people in our society who fail to find their identity in any existing group, wandering through life like a gasseous molecule in empty space.

Press play and be tossed around the entire emotional spectrum on the waves of ethereal ambient noise, retro-gothic synthpop, neo-classical harmonies, melancholic vaporwave and more.

2. F L ♥ R E S フラワ  ズ 3 EP

URL Future also released another marvelous EP I’ve been sleeping on last month, but which would have been one of my favourites if I had known about it. Flxres (‘flores’ or ‘flares’, not sure..) フラワーズ is a promising new-generation electropop project based in Menifee, USA. At the beginning of this year we announced a comeback of 80s electronica and it is very fascinating to see it happen in front of your eyes. The most exciting thing is that this exploration of 80s and early 90s sounds is led by a generation who hasn’t lived those days, being entirely free from the purist urge to preserve a genre’s ‘heyday sound’ behind sterilised glass walls.

In many ways, ズ 3 EP is in fact much more a fresh eruption out of the depths of the internet than it is a traditional retro-project. The bubbling, subterranean magma goo, gushing out microgenres like witch house, vaporwave and bubblegum bass now seems to bring out a sound that resembles the spirit of 80s, gothic flavoured cyberpunk, reinventing it as if it has never existed before. Long, black trenchcoats, cybernetic implants, rainy neon cityscapes and dim blue lit underground clubs where sweaty industrial bands perform for a small, drugged crowd swaying back and forth to the ethereal, dystopian grooves. Flxres shows a future which is still ahead of us.

3. Monotronique Afrika EP

Stumbling across this pearl of a release, it’s almost unbelievable to find out how underrated this promising avant-garde grime producer from Ukraine is. His style brings in mind highly respected front-runners like Fatima Al Qadiri.

It may be bold to draw such comparison for a beginning producer but the similarities with Fatima Al Qadiri go even deeper. Afrika EP in essence does with Africa what Fatima’s ‘Asiatisch‘ did with the Far East: it takes you on a virtual trip into an imagined, rather than the actual Africa. By evoking a similarly hollow, plastified experience, it makes you wonder what is left if after all the layers of meaning Western society attaches to the most diverse continent on the planet, have evaporated into the air. What’s left is minimalistic, polyrhythmic percussion, accompanying distant fragmented snippets of imagery that isn’t there and gets destroyed in the experience. This makes Afrika EP therefore vastly different from traditional ‘tribal ambient music’ or artists like Clap Clap, who create a thick, prescribed ambiance that should contrast with our own, unable to free themselves from presenting Africa through ongoing Western cliches of primitive tribalism and savage beauty.

Brilliant avant-garde kuduro from a producer who is there to stay!

4. Mareaboba Bioamorfo

The Mexican acid-cumbia experimentalist Maraboba is a producer whom we haven’t blogged as much in the past as I expected. Shame on us, because Mareaboba is one of the more interesting names from the still vibrant digital cumbia underground, which is temporarily off my radar but has an important place in my heart.

Bioamorfo is a unique release, coming from the direction of psychedelic cumbia experimentalism of artists like Tu Guaina or 420 Music Flavor, but at the same time becoming so dystopian that it can be seen as an example of the growing fusion of global, non-Western rhythms with the dark-hard side of electronic music.

Caballito is also an interesting label which, like us at Generation Bass, forms in many ways a bridge between and the global avant-garde and the now marginal turn-of-the-decade ‘tropical’ scene which have become completely different worlds.

5. Alfonso Luna Alfonso Luna EP

If there is anyone who stays faithful to the original movement of tribal prehispanico and at the same time keeps innovating it, it is the Monterrey based techno-folklorist Alfonso Luna. He releases exciting new stuff on a monthly basis and, unique for most 3ball producers after the earliest oldskool perdiod, experiments with different rhythms and tempos that deviate from the standard 140 BPM syncopated-cumbia groove.

In Alfonso Luna EP, released by our friends from Kumbale in Germany, he shows the best of the entire spectrum of his diverse style. With tracks like ‘El Dios Luna’ and ‘Mexica’, he deviates even more from the conventional paths than usual, getting into experimental techno and deep-dub territory. 3ball prehispanico and techno go very well together and I hope this EP will inspire producers to release more of such experiments in the near future!

6. Sonido Berzerk Unworthy EP

On the cover art I made some weeks back I forgot to put a reference to the London based label Etoro Records that released it, so here still a major shoutout. The bass alrounder from Veracruz, Mexico, must be a familiar name for dedicated readers. His eclectic style combines grime, juke, jungle, hiphop, dub and dembow blended together with a melodic chill flavour. This makes him fit seamlessly into the post-EDM global avant-garde, global bass fused with future beats and the internet-underground.

Unworthy EP is such an EP which is as much future beats as it is traditional global bass. Deep dub techno, afrohouse, baile funk, salsa, bachata, juke, kuduro, kizomba, merengue and deephouse.. everything is fused together organically into a thoughtful, slightly melancholic trip which is best listened to alone at a late summer night.

7. La Fama Blanca Baile Tropicante

Baile tropicalte is a compilation and La Fama Blanca is not technically the author but he is the host of the recurring Baile Tropicante tropical club nights in Lisbon. Even though the tropical movement as we have known it in the past is no longer at the forefront of the global music avant-garde as it was back in 2010, it has retracted into a thriving and vibrant underground which keeps on generating treasures.

This grand compilation features many Generation Bass household names as well as some lesser known artists, all more than worth checking out: the Dutch organic tropical duo UMOJA, the Chilean digital cumbiambero Señor Chancho, the Peruvian rising tropical indie duo Animal Chuki, the Argentinian Latin-dub producer El Barba Dub, the Argentinian tropical bass duo FAAUNA, Caballito Netlabel nestor and tropical vanguardist BIGOTE, the French soulful tropicalist iZem, the Brazilian alternative tropical project Sistema Criolina, the Spanish cumbia fusionist DJ Caution, the Madrid based Colombian organic cumbia duo Guacamayo Tropical, the Mexican extraterrestrial cumbia futurist Asagi Saund, Caballito affiliated ‘graveton’ bangerista Grita, and Kzike Guacamayero Cumbiero who I believe is one half of Guacamayo Tropical.

Baile Tropicante are 15 tracks full of organic dub influenced Afro-Latin grooves. A warm-memory infused sound which, for our generation, can perhaps already be called ‘classic’.

8. Moniker Thousand Bit

Bangeristas attention!! The American bass duo Moniker are an upcoming name in the future bass world and his style is absolutely RAD! This is forward-looking bass music at its full potential, involving complex rhythms, diverse percussion sounds and a storehouse of influences when it comes to synth sounds. Much future bass today seems to go down the same road towards destruction as EDM, falling in the pitfall of replicating the same formulas over and over, even before the genre has fully replaced EDM as the new commercial grab bag of everything electronic. But Moniker shows how it can be done and the result is brilliant, intense and uplifting!

Guest appearances are made by the Generation Bass affiliated crew BANGANAGANGBANGERS, the Dutch bass bangerista Subp Yao, the Utrecht based future beats alchemist Frenquency, the enigmatic prodigy Rustybird, and the psychedelic bass alchemist from Cincinnati, Spankalicious.

GROVESTREET
World Series Vol.7

Trax Couture is a London Based avant-garde label, club-night and clothing store created by the forward looking cultural alrounder Rushmore, one of the influential voices of the London club underground. Their monthly ‘World Series’ LP series has been running since about a year now, showcasing the promising underground artists, mainly in the vibrant area where flavours like ghetto-house, vogue grime and juke are constantly being blended into new exciting sounds.

This time (actually I realised the next edition is out already..) it is the internet-underground inspired futurist GROVESTREET, an absolute must-follow for Generation Bass readers, who delivers 5 magnificent tracks which combine the most unlikely genres such as industrial techno, experimental ambient, vaporwave and grime!

 Lege 伝説
The Colours EP

Lege Kale is a skilled producer whose style reminds in more than one aspect of Mr. Carmack’s uncategorisable eclecticism. It’s not future beats (in the narrow sense), not trap, not instrumental hiphop but truly something in between. “Who cares?” you may ask, but it does matter in a time where most new musicians copy fixed formats all the time and genres, even umbrella terms like EDM and future beats, lose creativity and diversity almost as soon as they become ‘a thing’.

In a sense, ‘The Colours EP’ is the chill answer to Moniker’s ‘Thousand Bit’, also combining catchy beats, delicious polyrhythmic percussion and subtle well-produced synth work in a brilliant way. I’d love to see him collab with Moniker in the future!

Lascivio Bohemia
Le Rumbé Saboralia

It’s been a while since I have had the time and opportunity to pay attention to one of the most promising newcoming labels of last year: Regional from Chile. They’ve released quite some great stuff in the meantime so I picked the release that I found most exciting of all: an experimental 11 track electro-folklore album from the Ecuadorian alrounder Lascivio Bohemia. Cumbia is blended with other prehispanic Andean and Afro-caribbean rthythms such as mambo, dembow and downtempo 3ball, accompanied by extensive sampling and dreamy as well as rough, experimentally flavoured synths.

Le Rumbé Saboralia connects the haydays of Sexxy Saturday Cumbia to the fast changing global music landscape of today!

SIMPIG
Strangers LP

SIMPIG, formerly known as the duo Shake it Maschine & Mr.Pigman, from Switzerland are probably a new name for many Generation Bass followers but not if you’re familiar with the vibrant underground of juke, footwork & alternative trap which is constantly feeding new sounds into the future-bass/futurebeats movement. A name to keep an eye on definitely!

Strangers LP is a breathtakingly perfect artwork of complex rhythm and melody. Traces of juke, footwork, jersey club, grime and trap can be recognised but the whole of every track transcends genres completely. The melodic work is a true composition that goes beyond club music, dragging you into an almost cinematic grippingly melancholic, future-noir scenery!
