Sexxy Saturday Cumbia – January

Art by Tropi Delia

As we enter 2017 to the uplifting sounds of the cumbias of the future, we have been accumulating new tropical beats with more hunger than ever before. Below is a selection of this month´s cumbia orientated releases. We hope you enjoy:

 Silly tang selected:

 Dj Elwood – Live Set

To start this month is cold winter I wanted to introduce a Dj which I have never had the pleasure of seeing or meeting but always heard great feedback from his sessions! Actually a home bred Dj from France, Rennes. A city I have plenty of time for as I lived there for 2 years! This mix is a subtle blend between cumbia – Tropical bass and more modern beats such as global footwork. Really smooth from start to finish you can enjoy it whilst sipping on your hot wine!

Sauvage FM –Tropical Thug

Staying in the same region of the world here is an absolute killer mixtape by Sauvage FM called Tropical Thug. As I said this mixtape is badboy proper going in on the tropical bass and global madness, always with a hint of South America? I really dig his tunes and his production it’s always bass orientated to make you groove it hard!

Henry Cruz – Ta encendio el beeper

Now then I know this track is not totally cumbia, and I do apologise for the purists before they kill me J but all in all, this entire track has made my month a brighter and warmer place. Henry Cruz is his name and make you dance is his aim! This semi acid, footwork and salsa track has come out with perfect timing for us to get the aguardiente out, and forget about the winter.

Universal Sound – Dinamita

Universal Sound out of Buenos Aires is a new producer which I have come across and I have to say what a good pleasing surprise! This cumbia is simply based and very humbly put together but has so many little details that it comes together as a hit. Those vocals and breakdowns and real smooth and the 2nd drop is bass heavy trust me! Very groovy tune indeed big up yourself!

Club de Baile CD’M – Cumbia in Lab (Latin Bass Mexico Records)

I´m not sure if you have come across this huge Latin Bass Mexico records compilation? Every time they appear you know you will have a shower of amazing tunes for the rest of the year J On this note big up señor Oscilator Bass every time for his works within our cumbia world. Coming back on this track, first word is spacey, bubbly and fresh. The notes and works on the mids are wicked, like a wah-wah pedal for guitars if you know what I mean. Then a nicely garnished bassline and some sweet, discrete drums to help put this piece of art together.

Amambay 100000 – Chumbimba

Let’s get twisted shall we? I have always been a fan of Amambay 100000 ´s work but this time I had to share it with you guys. This broken down cumbia is a killer for any satanic rituals trust me J personally I love the accordion and this twisted like sounds coming from everywhere. Very square production, as always with this great maestro. It is barely legal to minors (under 18) I believe so go run grab it whilst you can!

Novalima – Como yo Captain Planet remix (Wonderwheel Recordings)

So having the album on vinyl in my collection when I saw the remix Ep coming out I was stung! Hooked, addicted! This remix is the one and only Captain Planet which always comes with very fresh instrumental and a mix down full of air and clarity. On here very classic Novalima track which he has blended into a sublime afro-latin dancefloor starter.

Chakana – Cumbia arper

This track is rave! From start to finish a proper cumbia rave anthem if you ask me. Everything in it has its euphoric tones and shades. Really nice classic guitar notes added on a super heavy linear cumbia beat with added raving effects. Really digging this and will be playing out a lot!

Pixi trace – Monte Bajo (Club Social Tropical)

Whilst we are raving well let’s stay in there and act cool ! A very acid track, this has blown me away properly. It is a heavily built riddim with these nail on board type noises which really blend in perfectly with the cumbia element. Such kicks and build up this tune for me has done it. Proper January rince out!

Jhon Montoya – Goulash Disko live set

Now quickly presenting this mix recorded at Goulash Disko festival which we have a had the pleasure of witnessing the whole Selva posse. Great mix all together and really fitting with the festival vibes. Sun, chill and well-being. Big ups Mr Montoya!

DJ Neber – Cumbia of the spirit

Bit of Cumbia and a bit of Hip-hop, “who ya gonna calla?”

Well we all know who we have to call the all mighty Dj Neber is always on the frontline with his fine style of cumbia turntablist! Really nice beat on this one especially the wobbly guitar and the high hat toned drum break. This is the far west within Dj Neber´s musical world.

Moto Kiatu – Malaria

No Mr Tang it’s not cumbia! It’s NOT CUMBIA!!!

Well sorry I know but this project is so exiting that I had to post something about it. Out mates from Madrid aka Sonidero Mandril y Manglar have come together to present to us Moto kiatu ¡ Very fresh very new so full of surprises this is the first mix they are presenting from the one and only jungle brother: MALARIA. If you don’t know of this killer Dj get to know, proper underground legend my tell ya!

Coconutah selected:

Tropikhongo & Pablo Pachacutik – Guerrero Andino (Lascivio Bohemia remix)

Lascivio Bohemia remixes Tropikhongo & Pablo Pachacutik electro cumbia style. A slow atmospheric burner, it creates an electronic andean vibe that make for a smooth, pleasant journey. Layers of synths blend with flutes and mallets blend seamlessly with guiros and percussion, making for a hypnotic, relaxing listen.

Animal Chuki remix “Beto Kele” – NOVALIMA (Wonderwheel Recordings 2017)

Another Novalima remix, this is a real rebajada stomper. The Peruvian band´s vocals mix amazingly with the slow pounding rhythm whilst the low and dirty bass is perfect for slow head shaking on the dancefloor. Animal Chuki have been bringing big, dubby tracks recently, and this is no exception. Big tune.

Dj Padrinomixsonidero – Cumbia Picosita 2017 Limpia Los Pipopes

https://soundcloud.com/djpadrinomixsonidero/004-la-cumbia-picosita-2017-grupo-los-pipopes

Straight from New York, Dj Padrino delivers a lovely grooving, old school Mexican cumbia, with layers of synths and crazy guitar riffs all over! Great sound, great production, this is definitely a catchy riddim. Check it out!

El Extravagante – Altiplanica (Tribilin Sound Remix) (Regional Label)

Out on Sello Regional, el extravagante´s Patiperro EP is a must listen. Between banging Cumbia tunes like La cumbia de Chile, resides tribilin sound´s interpretation of Altiplanica. In his recognizable style this is an evolving, continuous journey that will make you want to listen again, and again. There are also remixes from a handful of other amazing artists to listen to, making for a nicely round, full EP.

Panther Panther! – Dunobizeh (Hawaii Bonsai Records)

Swiss label Hawaii bonsai records presents Dunobizeh by Pink Panther, along with a whole series of tasty remixes by the crème de la crème tropical artists around. It has a definite cumbia orientation with lots of catchy synth and guitar riffs, intricate psychedelic progression, and a good variety of punchy tropical beats. Amongst other little gems, check out the Yeahman or Sonido profundo remixes!

Turbo Sonidero – La Kumbia Del Trompas (Feat. Talacha) #fucktrump

In typical turbo sonidero style, this tune is a pretty relentless, synth driven, sonidero trip with heavy guiros and haunting vocals. The warping synths and samples contribute to making a trippy experience! Fuck trump.

Kaygee Selected:

Pol Nada – Canto a la paz (Jin Yerei remix) (Fertil Discos)

Big ups Jin Yerei on this one ! I’ve been rinsing his music lately and he never stops to surprise me. Here, he has kept the vocal from the original tune and added a relatively minimalist yet powerful beat, creating this deep, crunchy and progressive atmosphere that he usually has. Keep an eye out for Jin Yerei as he’ll be releasing more beauties like this one very soon! You can check out the original tune, as well as a brilliant remix by Dandara on the full release: https://soundcloud.com/fertildiscos/sets/pol-nada-canto-a-la-paz

Sidirum – Costa Sureña (ft. Barrio Lindo)

I think I missed that one in time for last month’s post so here it incase you hadn’t heard it! It’s always a ‘full experience’ to listen to Sidirum’s music. He always takes the subs one step deeper and I love it! He just dropped a new EP, ‘LUNA EP’, in which he teamed up with the all mighty Barrio Lindo for this tune and created this beautiful trip, with a very repetitive and hypnotizing approach for our delight. Make sure you check out the whole EP.

V.A. – Mare Insularum (Shika Shika)

So this one is a very special release for myself & Coconutah, in which we were very happy and honored to be included in, alongside so many great artists that we love and often mention on this blog ! This compilation, released on Shika Shika, is a journey itself; it covers many different rhythms and atmospheres, taking you through different electronic worlds and settings, whilst enhancing the whole effect with more traditional instrumental moments! I could go on about it, or I could simply recommend you to sit back, hit play, and enjoy !!

Nicola Cruz – Cantos de Vision (Multi Culti)

So while we’re on the deep vibes, think I can mention this big release on Multi Culti, which will also be released in 12” format ! The all mighty Nicola Cruz strikes again showing us just how he does it ! Absolute vibes and instrumental emotion in this ep, in which Nicola Cruz once more manages to bring the roots to the dancefloor, in what they describe as “a psychedelic replanting of folkloric roots”.

It’s great to see this genre of music finally seeing the light on vinyl format!

El Extravagante – Ancestral (Patiperro EP – Regional Label)

As mentioned above by Coconutah, shout out to Regional for this release, which also includes this beauty by El Extravagante and 5 wicked remixes by Tribilin Sound, Señor Chancho, Derrok, Franco Franco and El Buga. I had never heard of El Extravagante but was very happy to discover his works and especially this tune, which takes us straight across a few oceans and land straight on Oriental grounds, with repetitive sitars, chants and percussions to take you into a total trance. Make sure you check out the whole EP, and enjoy the free download, as always on Regional Label!

El Remolón – Energy Control

El Remolon is another one of these producers who knows how to push the subs a little further and release this type of bass driven minimal digital cumbia beat, full of space synths to build up on the final effect. Rinse out !

San Ignacio & Ubunto – Dois Mil Cinco (Quiero Recordings)

What an epic tune! It’s part of Quiero Recording’s wonderful fifth compilation, and brings in a special psychedelic funky and almost ritualistic atmosphere, which really works! The rest of the compilation is full of great sounds, approaching different areas than this one, so make sure you have a listen!

TREMENDA JAURÍA – Nos deseo // feat KUMBIA QUEERS

We’ve mentioned this new band from Madrid on here a few times already and they are back with a new set of tunes based around loads of great featurings. This one is a collaboration with the tropical punk band Kumbia Queers. They bring in the ‘villera’ side of things, and take Tremenda Jauria on a more ‘cumbia tip’, than the straight ‘reggaeton reivindicativo’ they usually go for. Keep an eye out for these guys, they are up for it and rinsing dacenfloors !

Ondatrópica – Lazalypso

It’s always a pleasure to hear a new tune from Ondatropica, and see how they bring so many elements, band members, sounds, rhythms, etc… together with perfection! I look forward to hear their new album to be released soon!!!

Sidi Wacho – Buena Onda (Videoclip)

Big ups to Sidi Wacho; I absolutely love this band and everything they do, and here is a brand new video clip of their great tune ‘Buena Onda’ for our pleasure, including the usual good vibes and musical delight.

KUMBIA BORUKA Live Au Transbordeur – “LA VIDA SE VIVE”

Here’s a little extract of what goes on when Kumbia Boruka come and play live; this was taken from one of their shows in their current hometown @ Le Transbordeur (Lyon, FR).

We hope you enjoyed the selection! See you next month.

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – DECEMBER

Artwork by Tropi Delia

So this is the last post from us for 2016 ! We believe 2016 was a very hard year for some but in general Cumbia has helped us through it and gave us that big smile we hope you are all having whilst reading this. Thank you so much for keeping this blog alive and generally giving us the love to carry on writing about this magical music.

THE SILLY TANG SELECTED

Kazike en Estado de Trance Mixtape 032 – Festival Nomade Colombia

To start my selection I have the pleasure and honour to present this absolute badman mix from a person that is very important to me! Yes: Kazike en Estado de Trance is his name and he is the person who taught me everything I know about classical vintage cumbia. A great person and also a great maestro. Here he presents to us a really well put together mix for the Colombian festival that is “Nomade” organised by Mr Toe. Enjoy!

La Orrorosa Feat. El Hijo De La Cumbia – Infeccion Tropikal

So now let’s get started with the cumbia punk, one of my favourite fusions within this musical scene. New track from La Orrorosa of the disc “infección tropical” with the participation of Emiliano Gomez (El Hijo de la Cumbia). The rhythm and vocals couldn’t go better together to be honest. Really powerful track which I recommend to any Cumbia-Punk lover.

Jota Karloza – Ugate Sooraj (SolSelectas)

So as I might have said before since I saw Barrio Lindo this summer I truly discovered a love for this downtempo minimal stuff and I have to say it is growing J On this particular track Jota Karloza brings us some deep ethnic vocals on a really rounded bassline. The label “Sol Selectas” always brings us the cream of the crop and on this one they have really upped the game once more. Recommended for any time spent on the beach or as my partner in crime would say in any hammock 😉

VIVOTROPICAL – Cumbia De Los Pajaritos (cover De Los Mirlos)

Who has seen “Stranger Things “? Well if you have, this is the Cumbia version of the synthesised soundtrack. Well not really as El Búho brought a version a while back. But you will see what I mean when you press play on this track. VIVOTROPICAL is a producer I have just discovered who seems very fluid and locked on his synth game! The beat is nice but very simple and lineal with this main guiro line, but the main work is in the composition and deepness of the effects. Brilliant vibes and I believe this has already reached our alien friends in outer space!

Metralleta De Oro – Doing Time (Sumohair Remix)

YES! It seems like Sumohair lives in a constant summer state, more productions he brings out, the more I need sun, cocktail and chilling L.A style. This refix of the classical “Sublime” track is all to love. Nicely made bassline rounding up some light drum breaks followed by some ragamuffin arrangements. What is there not to like about this eh? So go on if it is rainy or grey where you are close the curtains, get a cocktail and put volume on full blast!

Fokus – Amazonico

When Eastern Europe meets Colombian cumbia what does it give you, you might ask? Well I will reply with great joy: this is what it gives you. An absolute belter of a tune J a truly inspirational and nice friend has brought me this killer track a few weeks back and wow. He has also asked me to work on a colab with him so watch out in 2017 for the Fokus vs Silly tang stuff to appear. Coming back on this track with an amazing effort from a Jungle producer background and as always a superb construction with deep subs to get us jumping.

SCBdB – Jeden

So while we are in Eastern Europe I got sent this mix via soundcloud by this upcoming artist called “SCBdB” (be careful about the spelling he is meticulous) 😉 So this amazing journey within the deeper vibes of cumbia has totally rocked my world. On a different tip than the previous mix by KAzike, this takes us on a deeper more electro side of the spectrum. The great news is that you will be able to stream his first performance live on our first show of the radio via our: la Selva Radio J

Los Wemblers de Iquitos – Lamento del Yacuruna (Tribilin Sound Remix)

Back to basics children, back to basics. Every time I see a Tribilin Sound track come up I´m like a kid at Christmas, believe me. So when this appeared and I saw “Los Wemblers” and “Tribilin Sound” on this remix, every day is the 25th of December for me now. Really subtle as always but truly refined tune with this amazing guitar, that backs up the Wemblers. Some psychedelic notes in here and some really echoed out instruments: a perfect combination from the mighty Tribilin Sound aka Alvaro Ernesto.

Julio Inti – Cumbia Dub La Venenosa vol7

Here we have another fusion which I love within this Cumbia world, Dub and Cumbia mixed together in a superb mix brought to us by “Julio Inti”. As you may know this is an area of expertise for me and I have to say hats down to one of the best compiled mix of these two genres meeting each other. Run go tell your friends!

LolaManola – Psicosis Fem & Sziget Fest (presentación)

Here she is, our famous local from Madrid, “ Lola Manola”!! Very young on the capital´s scene, she has really made a great effort and impression on us. We have had the pleasure of hearing her a couple of times now and believe me she knows what she is doing. Here is a mixtape she brought us as promotion for the two nights she rocked in Madrid, “Psicosis tropical” and “Conspiraciones Tropicales”. Get your ears around it and it will make you digest a big New Year lunch or brock out to a pre-new year party J

Aslán Dub System feat. Jef Stott – Soñar (Global Barrio)

The label Global Barrio which is new to me has had an amazing impact bringing some quality music to our ears, thank you Aslan Dub. Trust me this compilation is pure gold! I have chosen this particular track to present it to you because as I said earlier Dub and Cumbia I just love it. But this is not any Dub, the production and slickness of these sounds are real soft and marvellous. Really great, great work thank you so much.

RCA & Tropikhongo – Delicia (Bleepolar Remix) (Regional Label)

Our friends from Regional never sleep, FACT. No, only kidding, but they are really active all the time which is a blessing for our scene. Here is a remixed Ep by RCA & Tropikhongo called Delicia. I chose this version because of its dancefloor potential. I can promise you that this track by the Colombian “Bleepolar” well mixed is a killer for the hips!!!

Turbo Sonidero Presenta: Kumbias Macabras en Acetato (Records)

To end my part of the selection for this year and this month who else than Turbo Sonidero! If you know how to get hold of these guys please contact me via “Silly Tang” as I have some projects but never managed to get in touch J To get back to this mix, it is as always very true and generous on the cumbia level. From the first tune you can hear the purity of the music that these boys bring. I´m a real big fan of this collective.

KAYGEE SELECTED:

Rio Mira – Adios Morena (AYA Records)

This was released just after our post last month and has been on repeat since then ! The original tune is simply fantastic, and is followed by 4 great remixes by Nicola Cruz, Kaleema & Chancha Via Cicuito, M.RUX, and Midnight Ravers. Adios Morena is the first single of Rio Mira’s forthcoming first album ‘Marimba del pacifico’ so make sure you keep en eye out!

Barrio Lindo & Wende Wen – El Humo del Fasito (Damas Gratis cover)

Stream: https://barriolindo.bandcamp.com/track/el-humo-del-fasito-damas-gratis-cover

Barrio Lindo teamed up with Wende Wen for a new ep, which includes this beautiful chilled out cover of Dama Gratis’ tune “El Humo del Fasito”.

Matanza & Oceanvs Orientalis – La Luna Y El Lobo (Jhon Montoya Expedition) (Shika Shika)

Waow waow & waow ! What a great journey !! I love the slow & minimal aspect of the original tune, but I must say Jhon Montoya absolutely nailed it with this remix. The progressiveness and atmospheric violin he adds is just perfect ! That’s another one that has been on repeat for the past month.

El Búho – Mañana En Tepoztlán (Pata De Perro Remix) (Global Barrio)

I’m a big fan of the band Pata de Perro and a huge El Búho fan, so this could only be a winner for me! They have added a proper live dubbed out groove to the original tune and it sounds great! As mentioned above by the Silly Tang, this tune is part of an amazing compilation, Global Barrio’s Vol. 1, so make sure you check out the whole thing.

Mercedes Nasta – Paricutín (El Búho Edit)

The man never stops and it’s becoming a monthly tradition to post about his new tunes and edits, with this one going out to Mercedes Nasta. He’s done it again and manages to take us on a wonderful journey into his world accompanied by Mercedes Nasta’s lovely soothing voice.

LEDA Edits Vol.1 (Fertil Discos & Folcore)

We mentioned their campaign last month and here are the first two versions of this incredible forthcoming double-vynil, which will also include great artists like Chancha Via Circuito, Tremor, Tonolec, Intiche, King Coya, Soema Montenegro, Miriam Garcia and Doma Tornados, among others. For now, here is El Remolon’s deep bass driven remix, and a wicked progressive edit by Barda. You can still support the campaign on: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/el-camino-de-leda-compiling-leda-valladares-music#/

Bomba Estéreo – Raíz (Nicola Cruz Remix)

This is an absolute beauty of a tune! Nicola Cruz just landed! He brings so much texture and depth to the remix, incorporating Liliana Saumet’s voice perfectly ! It’s part of Bomba Estereo’s brand new ‘Amanecer Remixed’ album so get on it while it’s hot !

Señor Chancho Meets El Buga – Conga Dub (Shango Records)

Fresh sounds straight out of Shango Record’s oven with this banger by Señor Chancho & El Buga. Pure dubby tropical sounds with wicked flutes and synths to groove up the whole thing, without forgetting a fat beat and a fat bassline: I love it ! This tune is part of the ‘Bora Bora’s Mist’ Compilation, which is full of other great tunes so make sure you check it out: http://www.junodownload.com/products/bora-boras-mist/3303520-02/

La Walichera – Sendero (King Coya Remix)

Out on La Walichera Remix Vol. 1, here’s King Coya’s cumbia bass remix of the tune Sendero. He brings an original intake to the tune, with very few drums and nearly no kicks but it works really well.

Eduardo Zambrano – Llamacornio (Edmoon Records)

Let’s travel to the Andes with Eduardo Zambrano’s new album. I had been waiting for this one, and it was definitely worth the wait. His music is hard to describe as it covers many genres whilst incorporating different influences, and that’s part of why I love it! He brings a potent electronic touch to the more traditional and emotional side of his tunes, switching from one rhythm to another so smoothly, and always progressing along the tune.

Lascivio Bohemia – La Cumbia Quitapenas

Yes yes and more yes ! Another great project by the above mentioned Eduardo Zambrano is Lascibio Bohemia, and it’s hot ! He goes back to the more traditional side of things on this one and brings to us this beauty, with heavy guiros and powerful flutes! It’s part of a new 3 track EP so hit play and enjoy the whole thing. “This is a tribute to Sixto Silgado, Paito & Los Gaiteros de Punta Brava, life was better after having seen them live”

VA Hystereofônica Vol. 1 (Tropical Twista Records – 2016)

Very happy to hear Tropical Twista’s first compilation entirely dedicated to female artists: “Here we have artists that come from different branches that ensnare the electronic Latin-American scene in the most variable sonic textures and beats per minute. There are twenty-two women involved in this project – and only women – , some already established and some new potencialities among them, gathered by Ágatha Barbosa (Cigarra) in a big net on the Hystereofônica project.”

The Nu LatAm Sound – Ecuador Episode 3 – The Andes Sounds (ZZK Films)

Here’s the third episode of ZZK’s series on new Latin American sounds, focusing this time on Ecuador and the Andes Sound. It’s always a pleasure to watch these episodes. Enjoy ! The fundraiser they had put in place to continue these audiovisual projects was reached so we can expect more to come 🙂

Paloma del Cerro en Tomate la tarde

Nice interview with Paloma del Cerro + live performance on Argentinian TV.

Festival Nomade 2017

For those of us who couldn’t go to this lovely festival in Colombia, here’s a little glimpse of what went on ! Festival Nomade has another editon coming up in Chile so keep an eye out !

Fania Presents: MANANA Cuba Festival

Great insight into the legendary Fania Records label and the recent Manana Festival which took place in Cuba not so long ago, bringing together both traditional and electronic worlds by including a fabulous list of bands and djs.

As always, here are some of the mixes which I have had the pleasure of hearing over the past month:

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA

sex-sat-cumbia-septiembre

Artwork by ATILA

Cumbia and tropical bass continue to advance all over the world this summer, with the genres being featured in many gigs and festivals this summer. As always, releases seem to pick up in September as artists come back from their interdimensional travels and return to work. This time is no different as enormous amounts of quality cumbia is to be found. Here are some choice cuts from this month!

 KAYGEE selected:

San Ignacio – Casiotone Rosa LP (Casa Caos / Fertil Discos)

Proper deep tropical business from Argentina with San Ignacio’s new LP released in conjunction with two labels which are bringing out some great stuff recently: Casa Caos & Fertil Discos. They also invited several other artists to bring out some special edits for the occasion.

San Ignacio has managed to “incorporate his passion for literature and music” in this beautiful journey. The sounds are profound, really well produced, liberating a powerful atmosphere along the EP. Some tracks like ‘Os Ventos’ or Yule & JGB’s rework of ‘Ou Não É’ stand out for me, but I strongly recommend you listen through the whole thing; it’s a beauty !

Palenque Records Afrocolombia Remix (preview clips) (Galletas Calientes Rec.)

What a great surprise that was; I didn’t see that one coming: a 5 track remix series “to pay a tribute to Palenque Records who are celebrating 20 years of musical activism in 2016”. Galletas Calientes Rec. chose 5 artists who are currently moving the tropical / global bass scene around the world and who have now delivered 5 great remixes: Solo Moderna, Motin, Ghetto Kumbé, Dj Sabo and Rafael Aragon. All 5 of them have really managed to keep the essence and magic of the original tunes, and bring these traditional champeta & currulao rhythms straight to the dancefloor. It’s out soon on vynil on Galletas Calientes Records, so pre-order it while you can at: http://www.toolboxrecords.com/fr/product/26627/oriental-jazz-cumbia-gypsy/galletas-calientes-10/

Jhon Montoya – Chuquy (Barrio Lindo Remix)

Barrio Lindo en la casa! I always love his productions; they are so tight and create such a great atmosphere. This one has a lovely repetitive and catchy groove to it, just in place for that amazing flute to come in and hit the spot.

We had the pleasure of meeting and seeing both John Montoya and Barrio Lindo play live this summer on a ‘paradise beach’ in Croatia: it was simply fantastic.

Kike Pintos – Zorro Negro (Barrio Lindo Remix)

And here’s another remix from Barrio Lindo; the man never stops! This time he takes us on a journey straight into the Andes with a tribute to the great Kike Pintos. You can once more feel a superb ambiance building up in the tune, full of delayed details and heavy subs to bring the whole trip together. Love it!

El Búho – Cumbia de las Cosas Extrañas

I haven’t seen this new series that every one is going on about at the moment, but I’ll happily enjoy El Búho’s edit of the themetune. This edit is so potent; its strong psychedelic cumbia beat evolves so well with these incredible atmos and crunchy noises all around. I don’t know what else to say, it’s simply beautiful!

[WeAreMadeOfLove] WAMOL II (Lump Records)

https://soundcloud.com/lump-rec/sets/lmp17b-wamol-ii

If you enjoyed the vibes of the last few tunes I mentioned, I really recommend you listen to this release, one of Lump Records’ latest ones. It has 2 awesome remixes of Jota Karloza’s ‘Om’. We’re moving one step away from the traditional cumbia beats but I’m sure alot of you will enjoy the deepness and heavyness of these remixes. They are both different and bring out distinctive parts of Jota Karloza’s original tune, which make them come together really well in this EP.

Lascivio Bohemia – In love with u

I think I just missed this one last month, but here it is incase you also missed it. Psychedelic cumbia business in the hands of the great Lascivio Bohemia. His productions are always so original, and so genuine. They are always evolving and moving around, bringing in darker elements when you expect it the least, grabbing you with them on the way. I can’t wait for this one to be released. Big ups!!!

Biomigrant ft Fredys Arrietaft & Toño García – La Muerte (Regional Label)

Last but not least for this month’s selection is this amazing tune by Biomigrant, which is part of his new album recently released on Regional Label. What a tune! The whole album reflects how Biomigrant has “inspired himself from the richness of rhythms found in Latin-America and amplified them with the power of electronic music”. Make sure you check the whole album out, and once more big ups to Biomigrant and Regional Label on this one!

And here’s a little extract of Biomigrant in full live flute business:

Silly tang selected:

NEGRO DUB REMIX – CELSO PIÑA (REINA DE CUMBIAS)

Two very big names in the industry have come together on this remix. You can feel the very warm, dubby bassline from Negro Dub which brings this cumbia to its true colours. Then we have the king of the cumbia and his accordion with this very unique sound and way of giving us the latin American feeling.

Swindle – Connecta Ft. Ricardo China

For my 2nd choice this month I wanted to bring one of my favorite producers from the last 3 years to the table. SWINDLE is a true underground veteran and keeps on lighting us with his UK bass music hits and then takes the time to produce beautiful pieces such as this one. His production is always very based on those tight drums and a very deep bass sound. You can feel the London vibe coming straight at ya!

Eyeunle: guiro para change – America afroindigena label

Here we have a very authentic and rooted cumbia sound with proper traditional instruments. I absolutely love this song. Not my traditional selection but when it comes to music made with such respect and truthfulness to its roots I just cannot stop getting inspired by its sound and spirituality. Out on the label America Afroindigena please go and get yourself this masterpiece on soundcloud for free!

Loko Bono – Sistema beat Andino Steppa remix:

Now you might know or not know that I come from the Dub scene and I truly love this music. Cumbia came along a long time after I started this love of music J So when the master Loko Bono comes forward to present us this Steppa masterpiece I just couldn’t control myself. I had to mix it and remix it for almost a whole night! The production is very nice and has totally managed to get to that Hard Steppa style, but for me what breaks it down is the vocal. This voice is truly a blessing from the sky.

Yo me Llamo Cumbia radio show – Tribilin Sound

So this is not the first time I share one of these podcasts and really they are all amazing J

I wanted to bring this one out because of two tracks which stood out for me. First of all the Loko Bono remix mentioned above and then the unreal track by Tribilin Sound called X E*vax – Hijas! It is a half breed of Cumbia and Juke together with a totally twisted melody pon top. Really dig the man´s work recently getting into more bassline vibes.

Shushupe – sarayacu taricaya ep:

Now listen to this kick and bassline starting this track. Fabulous track with those acid melodies coming in. I cannot stress enough how amazing the production for this EP is – very very potent indeed. I think this type of EP has a place within the tropical world but also on many other fronts such as Minimal techno – or even disco. Really clever and ear pleasing piece of music!

El Cifickzer X El Kombo Kolombia – El chavo banda se siente relajado (Hnry X Sonidero Sabotaje Edit):

Once again I mention the Rebajado Mix crew, Hnry and El Cifickzer I know J But honestly I think I´m developing an addiction to cumbia rebajada and well they just do real good works these days and it seems they are not here to stop. So we can hear the original vibes to this track by El Cifickzer and then those slight kicks coming in by Hnry! Really nice and smooth cumbia we have here for everyone to enjoy free of charge so go run tell your friends!

Rebel up ! Soundclash – Andres Landero – Rosa y Mayo (Rebel Up! Duckfood Remix):

Would you like some bassline cumbia for your ears ? Well if you have some huge bass sound system en casa please turn it up!!! This version by Rebel Up Soundclash of a classic cumbia is a real sound system artillery. Big ups and we hope they carry one bring in on some nice remixes or even original Cumbia tracks!

Secta Selectah – El acordeon:

https://soundcloud.com/sectaselectah/secta-selectah-el-acordeon

Now this all time player has come to us with a track that reminds me of a Totty style cumbiaton! Real nice groove on this one helped by this accordion and those breaks within the tune. You can also hear those samples coming in everywhere as the song plays which gives a real nice originality to the beats!

Cal Jader – Movimientos Nueva Colombia mix:

London Calling ? No its Colombia calling J

The mastermind behind the mighty events “Movimientos” has just landed in Colombia a few days ago from what I know and to promote his stay he delivered this sublime mixtape. I know this is the end of summer but for Mr Jader it seems winter doesn’t exist ! Special request on his travels!

Larry SKG : SmallFall – Jungler (Marimba Remix)

Getting to the end of my selection for this month but I couldn’t let you go before mentioning this amazing piece of music. I had never heard of SKG before, a producer from Greece. He has nailed it with this remix. I love the Marimba instruments and love this really ill sound he has blended with it. I´m sure a lot of music will come out from this very talented producer so keep your ears out.

Moonanga – Tropical mix

genn-bass-4

Stream: https://www.mixcloud.com/MOUNANGA/100tropical-mix-by-moonanga/

And to finish off this real good month of Cumbia I wanted to introduce you to this band. It’s a duo, a very loco guy and a lovely female accordionist. Let’s say the guy goes by the name of Chongo Reinhardt and the lady of “ I mas”. Together, they form the all mighty Moonanga! We have had the pleasure of spending lots of time with them this summer and trust me they are full of new sounds and treasures coming out. Here is a presentation mix they made filled of classic and twisted dancefloor killers.

Coconutah selected:

Morenita (Sonido Satanas Remix)

Part of a new remix LP on Tropic-all, this cumbia remix by Sonido Satanas delivers on all levels. Classic Mexican vocals combine with catchy synths and instruments and a groovy bassline in great style. Good tune for the dancefloor, arriba la bebida!

Lascivio Bohemia – La Visherita Flashera

Lascivio bohemia features again for a brand new electro cumbia release, la Visherita Flashera. A very organic buildup is followed by some more “villera style” electronic synths and leads to an eery, spooky drop. This is a great mix of potent sounds and has a very original side.

DJ Caution – Hot Steppa

This new offering from DJ Caution is red hot. A very sexy electro cumbia, dancehall inspired stomper, it brings great vibes whenever it plays. Badboy pitched down vocals ride a carribean, tropical drum beat while an amazing accordeons spices things up. Tune!

Pinduca — Mistura de Carimbó com Ciranda (iZem’s Tropical Discoteq Special Fix)

Izem presents a cool Little edit of a original brazilian gem. Heavy shakers, a sweet cumbia groove and a catchy melody bring this number into 2016. This is very fresh and very tropical.

The Rebel – Cumbia Dub

This little nugget carries its name perfectly, and manages to build an old school 70´s dub feeling into the drums with tasty guiros over the top. A classic dub bassline and some swirling synths round the track off. Big up!

Dunkelbunt – Duck Polk

I don´t think I had ever seen Dunkelbunt, Balkan and swing legend, make a entry into the cumbia scene. This is forthcoming on his album and is certainly an original beat. Just like the previous tune, this rides that fine line between cumbia and dub perfectly. The acid guitar sounds absolutely amazing – it will trip you out.

Thanks for listening and reading and see you next month!

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – MAY

pelolargo

Art by Tropi Delia

Before we start this months musical intake, here’s is a little ‘aparté’ on a solar powered festival organised by good friends of La Selva and great tropical lovers and promoters, in which we will have the pleasure of mixing with many of the artists who we often mention on this blog:

FESTIVAL TROPICAL CAMP (Tierra Candela & Guacamayo Tropical)

trop camp full fly

“Tropical Camp is a gathering in a beautiful natural spot where tropical music and environmental conscience meet.”

And it’s exactly what it says on the box: Wapapura’s solar powered sound system, a wicked line up, in a great natural environment & surroundings: get involved ! Tickets are flying and they are still really cheap! If you need more info check out their webpage http://tropicalcamp.es/ and watch how it all went on last year

And now, down to the music, with loads of great releases, compilations, mixtapes and videos that came out along the past month. We never stop to be surprised and this is what is great about what is happening musically at the moment, with new ideas rising from the past with a stop in the future on the way.

KAYGEE selected:

Kechifla (La Niña) Inti Ziman Revisited Ocho Y Media

Every month there are a few tunes that go round and round in repeat in my speakers, and in May, this was one of them. It has all the ingredients perfectly blended together into one wicked latin bass banger ! The electronic beat and melody are really potent and go really well with all the shakers, cowbells, percussions, trumpets….as well as with that beautiful vocal ! I really look forward to this one being released!

Mr. Toé – Ícaro Marirí (Viaje Andino 1 – Regional Label)

“Welcome to the most outstanding musical reunion of contemporary artists coming from Latin America and related diaspora with “Viaje Andino”, a two volume soundtrack presented by Regional label and Arte Usable.”

Now that’s been played in and out for the past week over and over again, they couldn’t have described it in a better way; this is indeed an “outstanding” musical journey straight into the Andes! Propper jungle business ! Every tune is amazing; but to try and represent the whole lot, I chose to bring to your attention Mr Toé’s ‘Ícaro Marirí’. It might have a little more of an electronic approach to the journey, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy how deep, organic and truthful it sounds, with a lovely subtle slow-housey groove & bassline; and that vocal is the cherry on the cake ! Make sure you check out the whole double-compilation on http://www.selloregional.com/

You’ll also find a tune from the Viaje Andino 2 selected by The Silly Tang below.

Kraut – Especias EP (Shika Shika)

Big ups to Shika Shika for this release. I had never heard of Kraut, and was really pleased to discover his debut EP: Especias. The whole EP (previewed in the above link) is an amazing journey across different musical worlds and continents, and starts with a particularly great one straight into the Andes, with the tune ‘Selva’. You can really enjoy how clear all the instruments sound; you can feel their texture. Listen to the whole EP on bandcamp: https://shikashika.bandcamp.com/album/especias-ep

El Milagro Verde – AQHATA TOMANI

This is brand new to me and I freckin’ love it. This is the first tune to El Milagro Verde’s first EP ‘San Lunes’. It’s some wicked “huayno cumbia electro” as he calls it. Heavy guiros and shakers, powerful melodies, strong kick, spaced out echoes….let me say no more, hit play and enjoy !

Lulacruza – Orcas Remixed Vol. 5

orcas vol 5

Stream and download on: http://music.lulacruza.com/album/orcas-remixed-vol-5

It’s always a pleasure o discover a new volume of Lulacruza’s Orcas remix album. They are once more all different, innovative, surprising, elegant,….whilst keeping Lulcruza’s deep essence. Vol. 5 includes 4 names which I didn’t know and had the pleasure of discovering thanks to this release: KR3TURE, Roscius, Srikalogy and Psilosamples

Moonanga – Modular Cumbia Bounce (Live Extract of Psychedelokumbia)

Great friends of La Selva: Moonanga ! This live extract is taken from a new duo they are creating, combining one nutty guitarist & beat maker with his lovely accordionist. Their musical story is too long to go into right now, but for now, here is their stop into South American influences.

And while we’re on the live business, here’s a great video of Chancha Via Circuito & Tremor performing ‘Manoteo en menor (Tremor Remix)’ together:

With so many great mixtapes seeing the light recently, I thought I would share with you some of the ones which I have had the pleasure to listen to this past month:

P.r.Λ.Λ.H – Mixtape – Festival Nomade

Great festival, great producer and great session ! He has a slow, deep & downtempo approach with the “base of the cumbia and the power of various percussion and melodies”. This is a powerful scenic journey into the depths of South America.

Métron Musik Mixtape – 024 – Vruno

This series of mixtapes always delivers quality, and for their 24th instalment, they present to us Vruno. This is another artist who really makes me travel. I particularly enjoy how he marries both electronic and organic worlds. You can feel all the influences of his roots brought subtly into newer berlin sounds. I really enjoy this fusion.

Dj Antü – Kalakuta Sur Color 3 – RSR – Genève

In a completely different vibe, DJ Antü, who is now based in Lyon just uploaded this wicked little mix recorded live a few weeks ago! Bringing back the classics in a more traditional approach, it’s a great and sunny mix, ready for the summer to come; I just wish it was a little longer to keep on dancing !

La Sardina – Caribe Psicodélico

This is fresher than fresh ! Brand new selektah just landed in Madrid. This mix is a a wonderful psychedelic journey into traditional Caribbean rhythms. Straight back to the roots, and to the dancefloor. Enjoy !

And before I pass on to my partner in crime Silly Tang, here are a few interesting videos which I believe you might enjoy, starting with Sidirum, one of the artists who will be at the Tropical Camp Fest, who has just released a wicked new video for his track ‘Intercambio’:

Make sure you also check out Rolando Bruno’s new video for his tune ‘Mi Chilota’, featuring……

And on another note, here’s an interesting interview with Grant C Dull (El G) from ZZK Records:

 THE SILLY TANG selected:

Caballo & Chuck Upbeat – Mirale Esa Nalga (Latino Resiste)

Here we have another month of pure magic and craziness within the cumbiaaaa world! This hit comes from the hands of two big producers: Chuck Upbeat and Caballo on Latino Resiste. Its more of a Reggaeton dancefloor killer than a typical cumbia but such a good track ! Some of it will remind you of this style that Happy Colours has.

Shushupe – Flor del Diablo (Viaje Andino 2 – Regional Label)

Regional once again has brought us a sweet compilation full of wonders. This original and down tempo track is a real smooth piece of niceness. Shushupe a producer which I had never come across delivers a real traditional and at the same time dubby cumbia !

$ele¢tor Gui†a ¥€ – Mis Ñerys – Ratekas ($ele¢tor Guita Dinero Remix)

New kid on the block; no one knows where he comes from or where he lives but all we know he loves money and the gangster attitude. He must be such a rude boy! On this cumbia he brings us exactly these vibes. Half normal half juke styling I really like the moodiness of this release.

G-Flux – Cocaina (Hawaii Bonsaï Records)

First of all a huge big ups to Hawaii Bonsai records for bringing this excellent compilation out on vynil. A format not very frequently used amongst the tropical labels but which is always respected for the amount of work it takes. A little example of the goodness of this compilation is this track by G-Flux. A track called Cocaina where the use of synth and harps is so tight and so relaxing. Big up every time to the G-Flux!

Maki & Beni – Shangó

A new producer to my ears but such a talented artist. Maki brings us this subtle and energetic cumbia. A very dark and aquatic sound which blends perfectly with this type of electronic cumbia. A lot of real good music on this soundcloud so run go tell your friends !

El Cifickzer – Kumbia De La Derrochona (La Malamaña)

Very traditional sounding I really dig this man´s production and tastes. Very simple and at the same very effective cumbia piece by Dj Cifickzer ! Go check his productions as he is bringing a lot of stuff out at the moment.

G – Flux – Moviembre (Sumohair Remix)

Sumohair does it again! Broken rhythms, ragga delights and even a bit of Sublime ! This track is excellent for a crowd worker and also very intricate to mix as the beats are arranged in a mad very interesting way. Really dig Sumohair´s new releases!

Sargento Garcia – Personne Ne Me Stoppe – Dub Mix

https://soundcloud.com/sergent-garcia/personne-ne-me-stoppe-good-dub-mix-3

The all mighty Sargento Garcia is working on his new project/Album which will consist on a very dubbed out cumbia style. This work is to watch out because it will be an instant hit by the legend!

COCONUTAH selected:

Turbo Sonidero – Killa Kumbias

This is heavy bass orientated cumbia with Killa Kumbias, a new release from Turbo Sonidero on Terror Negro Records. Turbo Sonidero always brings a deep and dark touch with moody synths and stomping guiro rhythms. The album as a whole has a nice psychedelic nu-cumbia feel and, between synths, accordions and others, there are some awesome swirling melodies to be listened to. Special mention goes to Cartagena de Indias.

HNRY – La Fiebre

Another very original electro cumbia production by HNRY, la Fiebre is a very inspired track that blends the old, the new, and whatever inbetween to great effect. The tune is covered in some nicely sequenced samples, and is full a tiny details that seem to further push this crazy mix together. Big tune!

Santi & Tuğçe – Doña Antonia (Frente Bolivarista)

Awesome cumbia from Santi & Tuğçe on their debut album el Regreso del gallito, this tune is definetitly “sensual, mystical, and up-tempo”. Beautiful guitars combine with spacey synths and an awesome vocal from the Turkish singer to take you on a oneway trip to paraguay, while stunning percs and guiro will shake bodies on the dancefloor! Check out the rest of the album which is equally as good and, as always, a heavy release from Frente bolivar.

Fat Joe – ATWU (SpydaT.E.K. & Quality Cumbia Remix)

A tasty number by SpydaT.E.K. & Quality Cumbia, this has the balls to combine some nice gangsta rap vocals with a tasty cumbia drop. The mix really works and will definitely work in the club. As the contrast between elements hits you like a pleasant surprise, the beats will take your legs for a boogie 🙂

Capibara – Gonzo [Jhon Montoya RICARICA]

This is a luscious sounding track by Jhon Montoya, it has an awesome traditional groove that will get everybody into it. The first couple of minutes are very catchy but relatively soft, with some cut up, pitched up, and tastefully arranged vocals. There is then a great surprise drop, when a heavier beat kicks in for the dancefloor!

Latido Regional #38 (KayGee)

Killer selection this mix from our one and only KayGee, as he takes us on a journey all over Latin America to sample its deepest organic flavours as well as its most recent electronic treats. The mix flows very naturally and seems to hit the spot at almost every tune. Big up KayGee!

Thanks again to all the producers who share their music with us, and to all of you who take a moment to read a bit of sexxyness on a monthly basis !

We hope you enjoyed the selection! See you next month for more crazy cumbias!
