Great meeting of men here, USA via Netherland’s Process Rebel and Brazil’s Transnational Bass original Maga Bo and also a great meeting of minds and musical ideas. They also recruit Capetown’s Teba Shumba on vox for a mesmerizing foray into dark Kwaito, Dub-Tribal, Industrial and Tropical riddims for a truly Transnational affair. The EP opens with the dark, brooding Kwaito of the title track with Teba singing in his native slang that combines the languages of Zulu and Xhosa but sounding like he could have come from the son of a Ragga God. “Like A Punk” is my fave with its Post-Apocalyptic Dub-Tribal stylings making the track a perfect fit as soundtrack material for any Boyle/Coppola flick. Real killa track and that bassline is raw! “Tropical Operator Riddim” continues the Tropical Rainforest theme that underpins the whole EP. With shakers and a typically Amazon type melody this track is the soundtrack to your journey into the deepest heart of the Brazilian Rainforest. The final track, “For The Grace” re-works the previous track with the addition of Shumba’s African influence that makes the track come alive and ready for the underground dancefloors of the world. Baile Funk is certainly one of my first musical love stories. Like a real one, with the « coup de foudre » or love at first hearing. The heartbeat, the passion, the anxiety, the anger, the lust, frustration and renewed pleasure, it was all of that. It happened by chance and it started with Mr Bongo. Yes, the very label we talk about today. Years ago I knew i’d have a big party coming and i didn’t want to open on the headline artist playing something casual, so i digged in the net for a few months and that raw diamond came out. It was a real fight to extract it, but i got my first Baile Funk Comp vinyl : Slum Drunk presents Funk Carioca by Tetine. And the storm of Putarias (sry i dunno what appropriate plurals are) of proibidão started. All the tracks i could get of Deize Tigrona, Tati Quebra, Tejo, Black Alien, Speed Freaks, Edu K (of course !) these were my names, my music. Thanks to Mr Bongo, Daniel Haaksman (who did an amazing job with his record label), the artists themselves (my Capoeira Mestre as well, thx Guara, i still have that recording you brought me […]]]> http://www.generationbass.com/2013/06/11/funk-globo-the-sound-of-neo-baile/feed/ 0 ISLAMTRONIC – DJ NO BREAKFAST http://www.generationbass.com/2012/08/24/islamtronic-dj-no-breakfast/ http://www.generationbass.com/2012/08/24/islamtronic-dj-no-breakfast/#comments Fri, 24 Aug 2012 16:01:21 +0000 http://generationbass.com/?p=58948 152cee7d-f8c6-4631-a2ac-213fdd83cc26

It’s been a while I’ve posted here, but always happy to return and write about good sounds and other creative spheres. Maga Bo has started a new kickstarter project, together with VJ M from the Rebel Up! crew. The goal of the project is fund the making of a live video engine for the performance of Maga Bo and two music video’s for the songs ‘Galope’ and ‘Xororô’ from his latest album ‘Quilombo do Futuro’. Here’s what they got to say about it: For the music video’s, we will seek out and contrast stark contrasts in the city Rio de Janeiro to reflect our age’s wider condition of the unequal distribution of wealth. This is especially visible in the favelas, shanty-towns consisting of improvised dwellings, known in the West mainly through connotations of poverty and social problems. Rio’s favelas, however, are also vibrant centers of creativity – many of Brazil’s most legendary samba schools originated in the favelas, as did today’s baile funk style. We want to capture the diversity and contrasts of life in Rio in an investigative manner, portraying both the hopes and dilemmas of contemporary life in the city. Besides the music video’s, VJ M will […]]]> http://www.generationbass.com/2012/07/20/maga-bos-kickstarter-video-project/feed/ 0 Post World Industries Maga Bo Releases http://www.generationbass.com/2012/06/10/post-world-industries-maga-bo-releases/ http://www.generationbass.com/2012/06/10/post-world-industries-maga-bo-releases/#comments Sun, 10 Jun 2012 12:04:24 +0000 http://generationbass.com/?p=57099
Coming in a bit late on this one but coming nonetheless. There was a massive remix release of Maga Bo’s ‘Quilombo Do Futuro ‘ this past month featuring many well known to us at least on the GB scene producers and dj’s. Also recently Post World Industries was resurrected with the recent release of Filastine’s ‘Loot’. The second big release by the newly resurrected PWI was ‘Quilombo Do Futuro’. Maga Bo called upon the producers specifically for the task of the follow up remix release. One of my favorite remixes is Chancha Via Circuito’s remix of ‘No Balanco da Canoa’. He brings the track to a new place putting the listener into a deeply pleasant trance. There are a lot of tracks so I won’t waste any more of your time, so please dig in and enjoy. http://soundcloud.com/post-world-industries/sets/maga-bo-quilombo-do-futuro/ Here are a few of my favorite tracks off the original Maga Bo album. http://soundcloud.com/post-world-industries/pwi105-maga-bo-02-no-balanco http://soundcloud.com/post-world-industries/pwi105-maga-bo-11-xororo-feat http://soundcloud.com/post-world-industries/pwi105-maga-bo-09-o-neguinho http://soundcloud.com/post-world-industries/pwi105-maga-bo-12-eu-vim-de I didn’t want to spend too much time reviewing the album as well as not just copy the press release information like so many others. It’s been an epic week for mixxxes this week! All 3 are much more than a cut above, so check em out & get schooled… Den5hion is easily in my top 3 producers worldwide but he still exceeds my expectations with his mix, Maga Bo brings a deliciously filthy tropical bass selection and DJ Zhao‘s latest mix was always going to be epic and it doesn’t dissapoint. Den5hion Den5hion is one of the absolute most exciting guys making music right now in my opinion, so it was with massive anticipation that I downloaded this one. It’s surprisingly light on the latin-leaning bass of his own productions, favouring a more sparse electronic sound. What’s so impressive about this, besides top notch tune selection, is the effortless ramping up and down of tempo and energy, the sense of movement & narrative which is carried off all the way through without the transitions seeming random. My new record, QUILOMBO DO FUTURO is finished and I’m now in the process of getting it out into the world. For that, I’m asking for YOUR help! I’ve started a Kickstarter project to raise funds to make this release possible. So far, the project is 50% funded, so we’re well on our way. There are many cool prizes for donations – the actual record, the remixes, DJ tools version and more. We would love and appreciate your help and support in making this release happen. More details about the project and see (and listen!) a video about the record here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/comandodigital/maga-bo-quilombo-do-futuro-new-album-release Please tell people about this – post it to facebook, pass this email along, tweet about it, post it on your blog, etc. Every little bit helps – especially YOUR participation! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask….. THANK YOU, THANK YOU and THANK YOU again for taking the time to check this out!
