Stumbled upon this truly amazing collection of mixtapes oozing everything you want in a series after having checked out DJ Haram as one of her mixes features amongst this great collection by Browntourage.

Browntourage is a creative crew producing diversity of aesthetics and conscious recreation. You can find out a lot more about them HERE.

I’m really impressed by this Mixtape collection and the range of artists they have featured on it, most of whom (embarassingly) are all new to me.

You’ve already met DJ Haram from my previous post and she’s dropped an awesome mixtape for them.

There’s another by Iranian, Yasi aka Jasmine Safaeian, a photographer and DJ currently living in Los Angeles.

border_convos-470x260

Then there’s 8ulentina, of Turkish heritage, and Foozool, an Iranian-Armenian and their mixtape is a collaborative visual experience and a way to share stories about identity and healing inter-generational trauma.

Jeepneys is a music, video, and performance artist based in Los Angeles and she drops another, the second in the volume.

Maieli (pronounced Mah-yell-eee) AKA Yung Honeychild, a Beat maker / Hip shaker / & Real down to Mars girl from LA via New Delhi, a producer in her own right drops one featuring mainly cool female artists starting with one of my all-time fave tracks and Nancy Ajram too!!!.

Finally, there’s the first of the series by DJ J^QI SP^RRO.

UhuruAfrika Mixtapes

avatars-000003979097-pfbyy1-t500x500

Some excellent mixtapes here from UhuruAfrika that I mistakenly posted in the Analog Players post yesterday. Here’s what these boys are about:

“Uhuru Afrika is a conscious “multi-sensory,” experience set to a unique blend of deep, soulful, Afro- rooted House music often mixed with Latin, Afrobeat, traditional tribal music, Orisha songs, and many other genres born from the African continent and the diaspora.

“Uhuru Afrika is a unique and powerful intersection of art and nightlife that challenges distinctions between the two.” –Boston Dig.

The mission is to bridge ancient traditional African music (as played by the Yoruba, the Zulu, the Maasai) and the electronic dancefloor sounds of today. Navigated by creator and resident DJ Adam Gibbons and accompanied by Malian born master percussionist Sidy Maiga, Uhuru Afrika hosts artists from all over the world to perform at their events.

Showcasing artists from LA to London as well as various African countries including South Africa, Mali, Angola and Nigeria. Black Coffee, Culoe De Song, Zepherin Saint, Zaki Ibrahim, Siji, Djeff Afrozila are a few of the many international artists who have joined Uhuru Afrika for performances. Uhuru Afrika has also opened/ closed for multiple Grammy Award winners Oumou Sangaré, Femi Kuti (2x), and co-creator of Afrobeat and ex Fela Kuti drummer, Tony Allen.

Uhuru Afrika has participated in festivals and events locally, nationally and internationally including Mi Casa Holiday in Playa del Carmen, Mexico; Crossroads Puerto Rican Pride fest at Cony Island; Afrika Nyaga Drum and Dance Festival in Rhode Island; Bembe in Brooklyn, NYC; Harvard University symposium on African Dance in the diaspora, to name a few.

Uhuru Afrika is a conscious party. We honor those who came before us and set a precedent for what we do. We honor the Ancestors, and the sacrifice they made so that we may be here. We wish to continue their legacy. We hold fundraisers, bring awareness to and volunteer for causes that mean something to us, and will better the lives of people in need as well as the community as a whole, be it locally or globally.

Sexxy Saturday Cumbia – Generation Bass Cumbia EP’s and More

ssc11

Art by 420 Designs

I have a couple morning announcements to make before getting into the music. And then perhaps roll call. Or maybe I should start with that first. Is everyone here? Good. Okay starting off here at Generation Bass we have been releasing free EP’s in the genres of dubstep, moombahton and even zouk bass among others too from time to time. We are starting to release cumbia EP’s and do you know who is in charge? Nope. Me, that’s right I am. So send me your requests and don’t waste your time with Dee Jay Umb, he is very busy with many other things. If it’s cumbia it goes to me and I’ll happily talk with you and discuss a possible EP release here.

Second up is a shameless plug. The reason I have no shame is because I work too hard and don’t have the time to feel shameful. And because I work hard all week listening to music every day, hardly having any time for my own projects, I am always speaking with artists, writing reviews, press releases, one sheets, producing album projects; producing, performing and mixing my own show The Global Bass Experience; writing and collecting cumbia tracks all week for this weekly post and holding down my actual job (I mean actual because it is the job that pays my bills and puts food in my stomach). So shame is the one thing I don’t have time for. I’m over-loaded. So I shamelessly wish to plug my hard work, I sincerely do not apologize if this offends you.

The Global Bass Experience is the show I wish to take a moment to plug here. I work on it all week and really would love to see it grow. I’m such a workhorse that I won’t ever stop producing it, until I feel of course like there is nothing more I wish to do with it, but that day doesn’t seem like it ever will arrive in an average healthy person’s lifetime. Please check it out and show me some love and support. I make no money from it but spend plenty on it. This past episode I covered zouk and zouk bass in a special mix along with some really dope cumbia, 3ball and moombah. I hope you like it, and if you do please please please share it with your friends. Also don’t be shy, please comment and share your opinions with me.

The Global Bass Experience Episode 5 04.12.2013 by The Global Bass Experience on Mixcloud

Camanchaca shows some love and support to Copia Doble Systema with his remix of “Doble Troble.” Also along with the chill remix track is a video with scenes from “Night of the Living Dead.” It’s a must see if you like cannibalism and cumbia together.

Copia Doble Systema ft. Catar Sys – Doble Troble (Camanchaca Remix) from foxmono on Vimeo.

Speaking of Copia Doble Systema, they are getting ready to tour this year and are looking for dates. Here is a promo video you most likely will like, especially if you are into bright clothing. Now under Post World Industries, please contact PWI for booking information at [email protected]

Café De Calaveras returns to SSC with his new project through Folcore. It is a reggae-cumbia EP. This track features Bob Marley and Chuck D on the track “Survival” remixed by Café De Calaveras. For a free download of the whole EP, visit Folcore.

It has been a while since I have had Chong X around here on SSC. He’s back with a sick mystical remix of Stas’ “Spirits.”

A mixtape comes our way by way of Sonidos Profundos, one of my all time favorite nu cumbieros. Sonidos Profundos never fails to please, even when it’s a mix. This is an eclectic cumbia mix perfect for background or foreground listening.

Sonidos Profundos [email protected]_Negro_Records by Techvibes on Mixcloud

One dude that gets in the brain with his cumbia is FeroZMonas. His herb-friendly music makes the perfect soundtrack for a relaxing sit down. I wonder what his plans are for 420 this year. Silly (lame) talk aside, FeroZMonas really produces some innovative digital cumbia that is a pleasure to listen to.

Take your time with the herb; I’m not done yet. Play this new track right after the last one. El Mulato is another innovative cumbiero that deserves much respect.

DJ Linterna of Dos Mundos Radio has been quiet when it comes to producing lately. So needless to say, it brings me much pleasure when he produces and shares something new. This is the case with his new track “Lunes off.” I even featured this track as the last song on my The Global Bass Experience Episode 5 mix.
It is a beautiful production that brings lovely visuals to mind. I am positive you will enjoy this.

Snow Balderas is one of the heads behind the Soberbio Musica collective. He knows his stuff and it really shows with this edit of “Son Calenda.”

El Mencho Cumbia Dub started sharing tracks on the Nu Cumbia Experience Facebook group. I’m glad they did because these are some really deep cumbia tracks that I found myself enjoying greatly.

There is not much I can say after all I’ve already said about Yelram Selectah, he just keeps producing awesome tracks for playing out in a mix live. He is definitely one of my “go to “ producers when it comes to selecting tracks to play in a live mix.

Dany F is our deep cumbia boy, when we’re looking for it. When we want more he is a good producer for champeta and other afro-Colombian productions. This deepness is his specialty, his trademark if you will.

For another producer that loves to take cumbia to new innovative depths you should strongly consider checking out the work of AsagiSaundo. He is the master of the sci fi cumbia and he’s back!

This last track is from a duo called Cumbia Machin that I had just very recently wrote a feature on – on Nu Cumbia Experience dot com. There I go into a lot more detail and also share their whole album “Esuper Cumbia” that this song is on. Just click on this link to listen to and read more.

Another busy and productive week has come to an end with the promise of many more in sight. The new EP releases from Generation Bass produced and managed by me will be intense, so keep an eye and an ear, or better yet, both of your eyes and both of your ears, even both of your nostrils out for the EP releases coming soon.

Peace

Classy, atmospheric deep house with an old skool acid vibe and a racehorse theme, apparently:

Native Dancer, nicknamed the Grey Ghost, was one of the most celebrated and accomplished racehorses in history, the first horse made famous through the medium of television.
In his first season of racing Native Dancer won all nine races he entered, thrilling crowds with his come-from-behind running style. In his three-year-old campaign, the undefeated racehorse received a great deal of media attention leading up to the 1953 Kentucky Derby. He won both the Gotham Mile and the prestigious Wood Memorial en route to US racing’s most prestigious event but at the Derby, Native Dancer lost for the only time in his career. Following his loss at Churchill Downs, Native Dancer quickly re-established himself as one of the best horses in America. He never lost again that season and was named Champion Three Year Old Colt.
However, he had to be retired as a result of a recurring foot injury with a record of 21 wins out of 22 lifetime races. Voted the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year for 1954, he appeared on the May 31 cover of Time magazine. At stud, Native Dancer was a highly successful sire, and is an ancestor of countless modern champions.

MIDWEEK MIXXXTAPES: DJ ZHAO / JIMI HANDTRIX / BZH DUB FOUNDATION

This week Zhao absolutely kills it with some afrofuturefootwork, Jimi Handtrix brings us the current state of dubstep in Berlin, and The BZH Dub Foundation brings the wonky celtic dubs…

DJ Zhao

As always, Zhao kills it. The only DJ I know of to casually drop in Steve Reich references to his mixes and still keep the dancefloor sweating (or even, apparently, moshing). I’ll leave it to him to give you the lowdown:

This NGOMA volume demonstrates this reconnection, after centuries of separation, between African tradition and Afro-Diaspora: between Nigerian Juju/Fuji music and Chicago Juke/Footwork, between Ethiopian dance styles and Detroit Ghetto-Tech, between Iberian trad-modern street sounds and American R’n’B/Pop, between Afro-Punk and Club Music, between Congolese Mbira workouts and Hiphop, between Ghanaian and Senegalese drumming and Urban Bass Pressure.

Check out Zhao’s full write up over at the Ngoma Sound blog and go show him some some Facebook love.

tracklist (click for full size)

Jimi Handtrix

Gosh, it’s a while since I posted a straight dubstep tape here (in fact the last time could have easily been Jimi’s previous Berlin Dubstep Allstars tape) – I guess it’s a while since any dubstep really caught my attention. To be honest this tape only did because Jimi happened to send it to me just as I was reading about GEMA’s new royalty charging system threatening Berlin’s club scene (completely baffling, if the club owners are being honest about the effects it will have on them, this could completely change an entire city) and the connection just had to be followed up really. This is all fantastic stuff, deep bass meditations with tastefully, minimally applied wobble and midrange. The flute on Datax & Bymski – Planina makes it the stand out tune for me. Who doesn’t love a bit of dubsteppin flute action.?

The BZH Dub Foundation

This is a weird one. Blending celtic & breton tunes with electronic beats is something I’m a fan of (and have been known to do myself on more than one occasion) so I was real curious to hear this mix. Afterwards: I’m still curious. Pretty much the whole way through there’s clashes, both melodically and rythmically, between the underlying beats and the trad tunes, and I’m not convinced it’s entirely intentional, but it works really well – the tunes drifting over the surface of the beats, from conchord to cacophany and back. See it makes me all poetic.

No tracklist! Naughty DJ!

MIDWEEK MIXXXTAPES: LOWLIGHT / BEHLING & SIMPSON / ANDY H

A dark ambient shortwave excursion to open from Lowlight, followed by a chunky slowhaus selection from Behling & Simpson and some classic boombap from Andy H

lowlight

I’m really feeling the theme of this mix:

Shortwave radio signals spread across the planet, the signal fades in & out, washes of static mix with music & voice, creating an eerie mashup of music & electronics.

This is the latest mix in a series, going back years, that utilizes shortwave broadcasts & music that already has a noisy, grainy type of tone. The combination of sounds has an weird feel to it, transporting the listener around the world and back again.

As with the other shortwave mixes, this one makes use of source material from Myke Dodge Weiskopf & his website of shortwave recordings found here… http://www.myke.me/wordpress/

…because I used to spend hours at the dial of my AM radio tuning in and out of the most faintly heard snatches of music & speech which felt like they were being broadcast not just from some far away country but also from some far distant time, future echoes. Lowlight does an excellent job of recreating that feeling with this incredible mix.

Spoek Mathambo

The ‘bbq mix’ of his own Mshini Wam near the start lulled me into thinking here was Spoek in mellow mode, but it doesn’t take long to realise this mix is bonkers. That much is pretty clear from the track list but as well as the amount that’s crammed in there’s quite a lot of jarring transitions here – but the overall effect of kwaito, hip hop, soul, punk & jazz all rubbing up together is well worth a listen. Tune of the mix for me, given my recent Disco issues, was Sipho Mabuse’s ‘Breakdance’… SUBLIME

MIDWEEK MIXXXTAPES: OLIVER GOBELET / BIG SPACE / DJ KAYWISE

A sleepy selection to open from Oliver Gobelet, then Big Space comes with 20 minutes of his own afro bass productions and finally DJ Kaywise brings us some poppy Nigerian/Ghanaian tuneage.

Oliver Gobelet

Amazing selection, would be good as the name suggests to fall asleep to but I can also confirm it makes an afternoon at work with an extreme hangover much more bearable. Great sense of narrative, there’s a real David Lynch feel going from the Tom Waits spoken word bit to the really minimal take on Blue Moon at the end.

No proper tracklist, just the artist names…

with Wendy Carlos, Benjamin Folkman, Serge Gainsbourg, General Elektriks, Arthur Lyman, Ella Fitzgerald, Daniel Padden, Trio Voces De Cuba, Kenny Burrell, Haruomi Hosono, Tadanori Yokoo, Misophone, Errol Nakao, Opium Flirt, Nina Simone, Tom Waits, and Elvis Presley.
