Cumbia and tropical bass continue to advance all over the world this summer, with the genres being featured in many gigs and festivals this summer. As always, releases seem to pick up in September as artists come back from their interdimensional travels and return to work. This time is no different as enormous amounts of quality cumbia is to be found. Here are some choice cuts from this month!

 KAYGEE selected:

San Ignacio – Casiotone Rosa LP (Casa Caos / Fertil Discos)

Proper deep tropical business from Argentina with San Ignacio’s new LP released in conjunction with two labels which are bringing out some great stuff recently: Casa Caos & Fertil Discos. They also invited several other artists to bring out some special edits for the occasion.

San Ignacio has managed to “incorporate his passion for literature and music” in this beautiful journey. The sounds are profound, really well produced, liberating a powerful atmosphere along the EP. Some tracks like ‘Os Ventos’ or Yule & JGB’s rework of ‘Ou Não É’ stand out for me, but I strongly recommend you listen through the whole thing; it’s a beauty !

Palenque Records Afrocolombia Remix (preview clips) (Galletas Calientes Rec.)

What a great surprise that was; I didn’t see that one coming: a 5 track remix series “to pay a tribute to Palenque Records who are celebrating 20 years of musical activism in 2016”. Galletas Calientes Rec. chose 5 artists who are currently moving the tropical / global bass scene around the world and who have now delivered 5 great remixes: Solo Moderna, Motin, Ghetto Kumbé, Dj Sabo and Rafael Aragon. All 5 of them have really managed to keep the essence and magic of the original tunes, and bring these traditional champeta & currulao rhythms straight to the dancefloor. It’s out soon on vynil on Galletas Calientes Records, so pre-order it while you can at: http://www.toolboxrecords.com/fr/product/26627/oriental-jazz-cumbia-gypsy/galletas-calientes-10/

Jhon Montoya – Chuquy (Barrio Lindo Remix)

Barrio Lindo en la casa! I always love his productions; they are so tight and create such a great atmosphere. This one has a lovely repetitive and catchy groove to it, just in place for that amazing flute to come in and hit the spot.

We had the pleasure of meeting and seeing both John Montoya and Barrio Lindo play live this summer on a ‘paradise beach’ in Croatia: it was simply fantastic.

Kike Pintos – Zorro Negro (Barrio Lindo Remix)

And here’s another remix from Barrio Lindo; the man never stops! This time he takes us on a journey straight into the Andes with a tribute to the great Kike Pintos. You can once more feel a superb ambiance building up in the tune, full of delayed details and heavy subs to bring the whole trip together. Love it!

El Búho – Cumbia de las Cosas Extrañas

I haven’t seen this new series that every one is going on about at the moment, but I’ll happily enjoy El Búho’s edit of the themetune. This edit is so potent; its strong psychedelic cumbia beat evolves so well with these incredible atmos and crunchy noises all around. I don’t know what else to say, it’s simply beautiful!

[WeAreMadeOfLove] WAMOL II (Lump Records)

https://soundcloud.com/lump-rec/sets/lmp17b-wamol-ii

If you enjoyed the vibes of the last few tunes I mentioned, I really recommend you listen to this release, one of Lump Records’ latest ones. It has 2 awesome remixes of Jota Karloza’s ‘Om’. We’re moving one step away from the traditional cumbia beats but I’m sure alot of you will enjoy the deepness and heavyness of these remixes. They are both different and bring out distinctive parts of Jota Karloza’s original tune, which make them come together really well in this EP.

Lascivio Bohemia – In love with u

I think I just missed this one last month, but here it is incase you also missed it. Psychedelic cumbia business in the hands of the great Lascivio Bohemia. His productions are always so original, and so genuine. They are always evolving and moving around, bringing in darker elements when you expect it the least, grabbing you with them on the way. I can’t wait for this one to be released. Big ups!!!

Biomigrant ft Fredys Arrietaft & Toño García – La Muerte (Regional Label)

Last but not least for this month’s selection is this amazing tune by Biomigrant, which is part of his new album recently released on Regional Label. What a tune! The whole album reflects how Biomigrant has “inspired himself from the richness of rhythms found in Latin-America and amplified them with the power of electronic music”. Make sure you check the whole album out, and once more big ups to Biomigrant and Regional Label on this one!

And here’s a little extract of Biomigrant in full live flute business:

While we’re at it, here are some other sweet live sessions , documentaries, videoclips, etc… which have come out this month:

Echoes ECR Cap. 9: Primera Parte

A nice insight into the origins and current musical movement happening in Ecuador which we are all following through artists like Lascivio Bohemia, Nicola Cruz, Quixosis, Huaira,…

Silly tang selected:

NEGRO DUB REMIX – CELSO PIÑA (REINA DE CUMBIAS)

Two very big names in the industry have come together on this remix. You can feel the very warm, dubby bassline from Negro Dub which brings this cumbia to its true colours. Then we have the king of the cumbia and his accordion with this very unique sound and way of giving us the latin American feeling.

Swindle – Connecta Ft. Ricardo China

For my 2nd choice this month I wanted to bring one of my favorite producers from the last 3 years to the table. SWINDLE is a true underground veteran and keeps on lighting us with his UK bass music hits and then takes the time to produce beautiful pieces such as this one. His production is always very based on those tight drums and a very deep bass sound. You can feel the London vibe coming straight at ya!

Eyeunle: guiro para change – America afroindigena label

Here we have a very authentic and rooted cumbia sound with proper traditional instruments. I absolutely love this song. Not my traditional selection but when it comes to music made with such respect and truthfulness to its roots I just cannot stop getting inspired by its sound and spirituality. Out on the label America Afroindigena please go and get yourself this masterpiece on soundcloud for free!

Loko Bono – Sistema beat Andino Steppa remix:

Now you might know or not know that I come from the Dub scene and I truly love this music. Cumbia came along a long time after I started this love of music J So when the master Loko Bono comes forward to present us this Steppa masterpiece I just couldn’t control myself. I had to mix it and remix it for almost a whole night! The production is very nice and has totally managed to get to that Hard Steppa style, but for me what breaks it down is the vocal. This voice is truly a blessing from the sky.

Yo me Llamo Cumbia radio show – Tribilin Sound

So this is not the first time I share one of these podcasts and really they are all amazing J

I wanted to bring this one out because of two tracks which stood out for me. First of all the Loko Bono remix mentioned above and then the unreal track by Tribilin Sound called X E*vax – Hijas! It is a half breed of Cumbia and Juke together with a totally twisted melody pon top. Really dig the man´s work recently getting into more bassline vibes.

Shushupe – sarayacu taricaya ep:

Now listen to this kick and bassline starting this track. Fabulous track with those acid melodies coming in. I cannot stress enough how amazing the production for this EP is – very very potent indeed. I think this type of EP has a place within the tropical world but also on many other fronts such as Minimal techno – or even disco. Really clever and ear pleasing piece of music!

El Cifickzer X El Kombo Kolombia – El chavo banda se siente relajado (Hnry X Sonidero Sabotaje Edit):

Once again I mention the Rebajado Mix crew, Hnry and El Cifickzer I know J But honestly I think I´m developing an addiction to cumbia rebajada and well they just do real good works these days and it seems they are not here to stop. So we can hear the original vibes to this track by El Cifickzer and then those slight kicks coming in by Hnry! Really nice and smooth cumbia we have here for everyone to enjoy free of charge so go run tell your friends!

Rebel up ! Soundclash – Andres Landero – Rosa y Mayo (Rebel Up! Duckfood Remix):

Would you like some bassline cumbia for your ears ? Well if you have some huge bass sound system en casa please turn it up!!! This version by Rebel Up Soundclash of a classic cumbia is a real sound system artillery. Big ups and we hope they carry one bring in on some nice remixes or even original Cumbia tracks!

Secta Selectah – El acordeon:

https://soundcloud.com/sectaselectah/secta-selectah-el-acordeon

Now this all time player has come to us with a track that reminds me of a Totty style cumbiaton! Real nice groove on this one helped by this accordion and those breaks within the tune. You can also hear those samples coming in everywhere as the song plays which gives a real nice originality to the beats!

Cal Jader – Movimientos Nueva Colombia mix:

London Calling ? No its Colombia calling J

The mastermind behind the mighty events “Movimientos” has just landed in Colombia a few days ago from what I know and to promote his stay he delivered this sublime mixtape. I know this is the end of summer but for Mr Jader it seems winter doesn’t exist ! Special request on his travels!

Larry SKG : SmallFall – Jungler (Marimba Remix)

Getting to the end of my selection for this month but I couldn’t let you go before mentioning this amazing piece of music. I had never heard of SKG before, a producer from Greece. He has nailed it with this remix. I love the Marimba instruments and love this really ill sound he has blended with it. I´m sure a lot of music will come out from this very talented producer so keep your ears out.

Moonanga – Tropical mix

genn-bass-4

Stream: https://www.mixcloud.com/MOUNANGA/100tropical-mix-by-moonanga/

And to finish off this real good month of Cumbia I wanted to introduce you to this band. It’s a duo, a very loco guy and a lovely female accordionist. Let’s say the guy goes by the name of Chongo Reinhardt and the lady of “ I mas”. Together, they form the all mighty Moonanga! We have had the pleasure of spending lots of time with them this summer and trust me they are full of new sounds and treasures coming out. Here is a presentation mix they made filled of classic and twisted dancefloor killers.

Coconutah selected:

Morenita (Sonido Satanas Remix)

Part of a new remix LP on Tropic-all, this cumbia remix by Sonido Satanas delivers on all levels. Classic Mexican vocals combine with catchy synths and instruments and a groovy bassline in great style. Good tune for the dancefloor, arriba la bebida!

Lascivio Bohemia – La Visherita Flashera

Lascivio bohemia features again for a brand new electro cumbia release, la Visherita Flashera. A very organic buildup is followed by some more “villera style” electronic synths and leads to an eery, spooky drop. This is a great mix of potent sounds and has a very original side.

DJ Caution – Hot Steppa

This new offering from DJ Caution is red hot. A very sexy electro cumbia, dancehall inspired stomper, it brings great vibes whenever it plays. Badboy pitched down vocals ride a carribean, tropical drum beat while an amazing accordeons spices things up. Tune!

Pinduca — Mistura de Carimbó com Ciranda (iZem’s Tropical Discoteq Special Fix)

Izem presents a cool Little edit of a original brazilian gem. Heavy shakers, a sweet cumbia groove and a catchy melody bring this number into 2016. This is very fresh and very tropical.

The Rebel – Cumbia Dub

This little nugget carries its name perfectly, and manages to build an old school 70´s dub feeling into the drums with tasty guiros over the top. A classic dub bassline and some swirling synths round the track off. Big up!

Dunkelbunt – Duck Polk

I don´t think I had ever seen Dunkelbunt, Balkan and swing legend, make a entry into the cumbia scene. This is forthcoming on his album and is certainly an original beat. Just like the previous tune, this rides that fine line between cumbia and dub perfectly. The acid guitar sounds absolutely amazing – it will trip you out.

Thanks for listening and reading and see you next month!

Art by            Tropi Delia

HO HO HO! DING DING DING!

Christmas is celebrated in different ways accross the world. It is a season of dancing and skanking; a season of music and rhythm. It is the season of praise and thanksgiving for the almighty tropical cumbia god.

La Selva is back for our third installment of sexy Saturday cumbia.

It has been a great build up to the Winter season. As you have seen from our previous installments, the cumbia scene is richer and more diverse than ever. It is constantly subject to new ethnic influences, and never ceases to benefit from the influx of producers, production techniques and production values from other musical genres.

As we scour the web for tasty new material, we have realised that the global adoptation of our cumbia dieties seems to be picking up pace, spreading across the world. It cannot be stopped! This fills us with happiness.

It is therefore with a festive spirit that we return with our contribution to this end of year; as always our selection has been divided into three sections, covering the full spectrum of styles, and an array of different formats.

We hope you enjoy the selection.

CUUUMMMBIAAAAA!!!

KayGee selected

Dubagroova – Phantom Drone (Pata De Perro Remix)

I’ll start this month’s selection with a lovely fusion of Cumbia with Dub, straight from Mexico. In this remix, we can hear how Pata De Perro combine the echoes, synths, and basslines of a heavy dub riddim with potent Cumbia guiros, kicks and instruments. All the other songs on their soundcloud, which are yet to be released, show similar CumbiaDub characteristics. I’m sure we can expect a lot from these guys.

Don Plok – Relajado, pero no regalado LP 2015 (Kumbale)

My good friend Pablo aka Don Plok has finally released his first album on the Berlin based net label Kumbale. The whole album is very eclectic and covers a wide range of beats and rhythms from all continents. An example is ‘Güera Jungle’, where he takes us from rolling jungle to cumbia breaks in a really progressive and subtle way. Grab it while it’s hot !

Ralfi Pagan – Pelao (Cocotaxi Remix) (Fania Records)

I know this isn’t Cumbia, but such a good remix of such a great Salsa classic had to be mentioned. Cocotaxi did it again!! They left the traditional vibe from the start to quickly build up a huge electronic drop that I can’t stop listening too. Their production is so tight, and full of great little details which create their own sounds and signatures. Check out the rest of the Ep, which offers two other great remixes from Coolout and K.Sabroso.

We’ll have the absolute pleasure of airing an hour session of the Swedish Duo in our radioshow in the next few weeks, keep your eyes out for Cocotaxi in La Selva.

Borchi – Vodú! EP (Tropic-All)

I’ve mentioned several fusions of Cumbia with other genres above, and will now bring to your attention Borchi’s latest EP, which brings forward a heavy hip-hop beat with dancefloor percussions, jungle atmospheres and crazy synths found in today’s global bass scene. Borchi never stops ! Big ups !

SidiRum – Intercambio (New Hispanic Music)

The tune Intercambio is a great example of the “electronic sky of tropical atmospheres and Latin vibes” found in the whole EP just released on New Hispanic Music. SidiRum, an active producer and musician in today’s tropical scene, always manages to create a trippy and floaty atmosphere with the combination of deep and sometimes dark electronic sounds with more traditional vocals, rhythms and instruments. ‘Intercambio’, which means ‘exchange’ in Spanish, reflects the process found throughout this EP of the ‘exchange’ between mainstream and experimental characteristics to create these beautiful new sounds.

AsagiSaundo – <º> 8 Infinito <º> – Encuentro Estelar

Brand new ExTerrestrial sounds and cumbia from the Mexican Capital. The progression and build up in this tune is amazing. The rhythm catches you slowly but surely and takes you to the other dimension when the synth drops. The space noises, sirens, shakers and cowbells blend in perfectly and create a wicked atmosphere. Make sure to check out his other tunes for a full ExTerrestrial tropical experience.

Chancha Via Circuito ft Wenceslada – Zorzal (Regional Label)

Found on the latest EP released by our good friends from Regional Label in Chile, this tune is a wonderful journey through Chancha’s deep and organic rhythms, percussions and atmospheres, accompanied by Wenceslada’s beautiful voice and lyrics. The whole EP is the fruit of work of many musicians, who all came together to create this unique journey. Enjoy !

Lulacruza – Uno Resuena (Nicola Cruz Remix)

Well I couldn’t go a month without mentioning Nicola Cruz.

In this case, it’s like a dream come true: a tune that I love and have used in my mixes remixed by one of my favorite producers. The original tune by Lulacruza was already great, but once more, Nicola Cruz has managed to create his own vibe around it, by adding some really interesting and potent touches to it. You can notice how he blends the original drums into some lovely electronic funky and crunchy sounds, and plays with the guitars and synths in a really nice way.

This tune will be part of a Orcas Remixed Vol. 1, which will be released in January 2016 and will feature artists such as El Buho, SaQi and Sleepers Work. Other remix volumes of Lulacruza’s Orcas album will be released this year, which we will make sure to bring to your attention, They will feature artists such as King Coya, Chancha Via Circuito, Desert Dwellers, Paul Feathericci, San Ignacio, David Last, Montoya, EVHA, and more.

TheNuLatAmSound Ep. 1 – ZZK Records

Here’s the first episode of a promising new doc series created by ZZK Records. In this episode, the focus is on new sounds emerging from Ecuador, featuring artists such as Nicola Cruz, Quixosis, Evha, Huiara, Juan Diego Illescas, Ivis Flies, and Mujeres de Luna who bring the traditional sounds of Ecuador to our dancefloors. It’s great to get more detailed insight from that scene, as we, spectators from Europe, discover more and more sounds from that side of the world.

Dengue Dengue Dengue – Remolinera Real (A Guide to the Birdsong of South America – Rhythm and Roots)

We will finish off this month’s selection with this brand new amazing psychedelic visual trip created by Joery Santos Gómez, based on Dengue Dengue Dengue’s tune ‘Remolinera Real’, which was released some months ago on Rhythm & Roots, on the album and beautiful project created by El Buho: A Guide to the Birdsong of South America.

Silly Tang selected

Rafael Aragon – Jose (Cassette Blog)

Waow Rafaaaaaa! What a tune our good friend Rafael Aragon has brought us on the “Casette Blog” label. A very energetic latin trap style that will get any dancefloor down to the groove. It is not a cumbia in such but I had to include this “temaso” in this month´s selection.

Sumohair – Colombia Chiquita (Compton Edit)

https://soundcloud.com/sumohair/colombia-chiquita-compton-edit

Would you like a lowrider cumbia? Well here it is! This lovely piece of music was put together by Sumohair and I really like the gangsta feel to it. Brings it back to the streets where this music originated – but on a 2015 note 😉

Los Ilusionistas – Las Limeñas (Bigote Edit) (Cassette Blog)

There he is – our national Bigote! And he has come to us with such a powerful track. Again on the cassette blog compilation, this hit is pure sensual, cumbia greatness. I have had the pleasure of playing it since it has dropped and no joke people go crazy to this anthem!

DJ Duro – Zumbaye (Original Bass) (La Clinica Records)

Here we find a much more refined song, from DJ Duro. Once again, this is a dancefloor killer because of the many factors this beast of a tune brings to the ear. The vocal is an absolute work of art, and the pre-post production of equally great talent! Big up and for all to enjoy ?

DjDus – El Borracho

Esos borachos!!! For all the heavy drinkers, here’s a classic type cumbia brought to us by Dj Dus, one of El Dusty´s aliases. I love the way it brings drunkenness and cumbia together. A very well produced cumbia classic.

Staycore – Ayida Weddo (Mobilegirl Remix) (Salviatek)

Once again this is not a pure cumbia style but I had to bring this song and artist to this blog, as I just love it so much. It is like a classic blend of reggaeton and grime-garage together. The style is minimal but works a treat with obscure sounds and dark fusion.

Coconutah selected

Miss Bolivia – Bien Warrior (Dj Caution Remix)

Madrid´s tropical scene is on fire at the moment and this remix by DJ Caution showcases one of the many sides of the scene, with a cumbia dancehall remix with some sexy carribean flavours. This combines an old school dancefloor with Caution´s personal cumbia touch to great effect. Big tune.

Carlos Vives – Rosa (Lascivio Bohemia selva-ritual-mix)

This is a lovely floaty, soft remix of a Carlos Vives classic from Lascivio Bohemia – this brings some deft psychedelic touches through some very softly textured drums and a swirling accordeon melody. Love it.

Tropical Twista Vol. Dois (Tropical Twista Records – 2015)

This is Tropical Twista Records´s second compilation and it definitely packs some serious punch, featuring a global combination of established and up and coming artists, and gathering funky ethnic influences from all of the continents. This is very fresh to mix as individual tunes but also has a nice continuity when listened to as a whole album. Must see release!

MAMA DIASPORA “Collection” (EP) – (2015 Singles)

Tasty EP by Mama Diaspora with a nice mix of dirty, electronic cumbia that has a stepping dancefloor vibe. It is tastefully finished off with some lovely balkan vocals and instrumentals that glide seamlessly across Mama´s nice tropical breakbeats. Kolo Richki is a mechanical cumbia roller.

We hope that you enjoyed discovering the selection just as much as we enjoyed preparing it.

Don’t forget to lock in to our radio show over the next couple of weeks, we will be celebrating in true Selva style, and we have some great surprises in store. All of the tunes above and many, many more will be represented.

La Selva wishes you all the best for the end of this year, and the beginning of the new one.

May the tropical force be strong again in 2016!

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA

gen bass selva post photo

A weird tropical incident has just occurred. There are cow bells ringing and guiros shaking. From the remotest confines of the jungle, La Selva is very proud to present the new version of Sexy Saturday Cumbia.

We are a collective from Uk / France, resident in Madrid. We listen to cumbia in all its shapes and sizes; from the most traditional on the American continent, to the most bass – face inducing, most space-travelling, to the smoothest, softest rhythms and guiros.

La Selva is three selectors, KayGee, The Silly Tang, and Coconutah. We started loving Cumbia through a variety of influences, the two most important being bass music and reggae, but we enjoy other styles of music too (rumours abound we like disco!).

One of the founding goals of La Selva was to use our various projects (La Selva Radioshow) to promote, and to provide exposure to, the least visible side of the tropical music scene. As well as enjoying more mainstream artists´ work in all its glory, we believe that many surprises lurk in the deep, dark outernational jungle.

It`s in this capacity that we are excited to now be presenting this blog once a month – we want to sow the cumbia seed further, we want it to grow, so that more people can eat its fruits and discover its tropical delights.

In contrast to many other genres of music, many of these delights are immediately available for free download, or via a small fee for a digital version (or amazing record), it`s an even greater pleasure to be spreading the love.

Part of the very nature of cumbiadelic existence is the discovery of an incredible amount of new cumbia – influenced sounds. So returning from the summer holidays has been accompanied by many new cheeky pleasures, including new albums/eps by some of our favourite producers of the moment.

All three members of La Selva will submit selections every month. So here it goes, some new tunes and some of our favourites from over the summer.

CUMMMMBBBIIAAAAA!!!

COCONUTAH selected:

Rolando Bruno – a 5 años de aca (bigote rebajadito remix)

If you heard and liked the old-school psychedelic original from Rolando Bruno last year, you will be grooving right into this deft little number, as it manages to maintain the catchy guitar melodies and themes of the original, while infusing it with tropical beats and bass. This is sure to please both more traditional cumbialists and chicha freaks, as well as those aiming for the dancefloor.

Bistech – KUMBALE EP

This freshly released EP is a must hear, with 3 very different vibes coming out of each tune. The first, Al grito de fiesta, is a grooving cumbia riddim with hypnotic synths, Munky bringing the party lyrics. The other two tunes are deeper, Pussy being a deep Cumbia bass with a reggae tang – really love this one – while Intraterrestre goes into the earth to a very deep place. Ride the cumbia waves.

La Sonora Dinamita – No Te Pongas Bravo (RCA edit)

RCA (Real Cumbia Activa) is back with another banging edit, here remixing a classic from La Sonora Dinamita. As is often the case in RCA´s tunes, it comes at you slowly with a rebajado vibe, but proceeds to pound you with relentless cumbia beats that any tropical fan will adore! Again, this is one with something for cumbia lovers of all types. We want more!

Coconutah – Welcome to the Jungle

The newest offering from myself Coconutah, this tune takes you to the great outdoors, and will make you want to book a flight to the amazon jungle. Starting with a catchy vocal sample, it blends traditional instrumentation with bare, floor shaking bass and a hard cumbia beat, leading to total immersion into the wild.

Rafael Aragon – Meecztow Revolution (Turbo Cumbia Balkanica)

Our friend and cumbia killer Rafael Aragon returns with this remix out on VLAD. The tune takes a step towards faster, grittier Cumbia beats, and is certainly a proven killer on the dancefloor at 04:00 am. Blending a rapid, unremitting cumbia-techno drive with fresh and funky Balkan flavours, this will get anyone and everyone jumping around. Cumbia and Balkan have always gone hand in hand – here both combine their party elements to dancefloor perfection.

Lascivio Bohemia – La Danza del Cóndor

Lovely melodic cumbia from Lascivio bohemia, a tune dedicated to South America Pre Columbus 1492. Sharp synths mix with a steady cumbia swing to create a beautiful atmosphere. It makes you think of flying away like a condor.

KAYGEE selected:

El Búho – Cumbias de Oro

Released on one of the labels of the moment, Frente Bolivarista, this is a true journey through Latin America with El Búho’s amazing touch on each of the 14 tunes he chooses to remix. Each and every time, El Búho creates a chilled and floaty atmosphere whilst keeping in tune with the traditional roots of the original version. My personal favourite is his remix of Grupo Kual, although the whole album is definitely a must hear.

Dj Masaya – Arisco EP

I was really happy to hear news from DJ Masaya a few months ago that he was working on his first EP, and was glad to see it released 2 weeks ago. The first 4 tracks offer a great combination of marimbas, accordions, keyboards, and chants, fused with electronic sounds and basslines. The last 2 tracks are two cool remixes that also get a dancefloor moving. You can definitely feel that Dj Masaya’s latin background (he is from Guatemala) added to the new sounds he must be surrounded with now in Stockholm.

Barda – Gruta

This brand new release on Fertil Discos is amazing. Barda explores the deeper and more atmospheric sides of the scene, as potent drums and heavy basslines mix with organic sounds and beautiful vocals. At times minimalist, but always in an elegant manner, this is what you will find and enjoy once you press play. The label describes it as a “mental journey through argentine caves and scenery”. Light up and enjoy!

Derrok & Vruno – Gunnii EP

https://soundcloud.com/vruno-saldivar/sets/gunnii-ep-derrok-vruno

About a month ago, we had the pleasure of hearing this EP, released on Aires Music. I had always felt there were similarities between Derrok´s, Vruno´s and Rodrigo Gallardo’s releases, and so was really happy to hear this EP to discover their joint atmospheres. They bring a sound that is slightly more techno – influenced, fusing beautiful traditional melodies and sounds. I particularly enjoyed the use of the flute in Remisión Espontánea, and loved hearing Rodrigo Gallardo’s remix of it. Can’t wait to hear more from these guys!

Rodrigo Gallardo – Agua de la Tierra

Talking of Rodrigo Gallardo, producer and musician of Matanza, I had to mention the incredible release, which he dropped on the also incredible label QTZLCTL. We’ve moved a little further from cumbia to arrive to what they refer to as Andes Step. I think that’s a great definition. Hit play and enjoy his 2 tunes, as well as another beautiful remix from Nicola Cruz.

By the way, look out for new Nicola Cruz album dropping soon. Been waiting for this one for the past year, enjoying beautiful pre-releases like Colibria, for which they have actually just done a new video clip:

And talking about new video clips, please take a look at our good friend DJ Caution’s new video clip for his great tune Cholula; video and drawing by Leandro Mosco:

THE SILLY TANG selected:

Drake & Dinamarca – 10 elasticos

N.A.F.F.I is a brand new collective from Mexico, coming up with some of the newest, most experimental, and exiting new sounds in the American continent. This particular track is very dark and very much reminds me of a lot of the early dubstep by of the hands of Pinch, Loefah etc…

On a dancefloor level, I think it creates a very personal vibe for all dancers, and just about settles that time where the party goes to the next level.

Balkan Riddims – Sensimilia (Dj Inko Remix)

My good friend Dj Inko has done it again, with a fresh and summery tune that had us all grooving this summer. Whether on the beach in Croatia, in an intimate Madrid club, or in a hyped-up spot in London, this song has made the Cumbia charts this summer. Amazingly produced, and with a very down to earth touch, the vibe is guaranteed to get the party (or after party) rolling.

Lascivio Bohemia – Pachamama San Cumba

Once more, and again and again: following his earlier releases on Regional label, Lascivio Bohemia has hit us with this fresh and groovy track. Slightly more minimal than the normal cumbia I tend to play, the quality of the mix and the air in this track have made it one of my favourites to come out this summer. A perfect track for an intro or mid-set chiller. I deeply recommend that you check out all his works, as he always unleashes true passion and vibes.

Motin – Fauna

The last tune on this monthly review from myself is from the mighty Motin on Discos Peligros. A tune called Fauna which I´m sure can get all of us thinking of the new ClapClap sound! This whole Ep is so fresh and fruity, it will get you through the end of the summer thinking you are still sipping on a mojito! With each release, Motin´s production levels just keep getting higher, as his work finds its way to a maestro sound.

We hope you´ve enjoyed our first selection for Sexy Saturday Cumbia, and rest assured we´re already selecting for our next one. Please send us any submissions / or feedback / or anything else you would like to throw at us straight to our facebook account, La Selva !

The Pannonian Sea?
“The Pannonian Sea was a shallow ancient sea located where the Pannonian Basin in Central Europe is now. The Pannonian Sea existed during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs, when a three to four kilometre depth of marine sediments were deposited in the Pannonian Basin.”
So that`s where they get their vybz from.

And who are they?

FRESH OUTTA SERBIA: MEET THE RAWBUTT!!!

10154106_819319251458278_5893433208988332187_n

I came across this artist the other day while i was listening to some JungleTerror… and I liked the sound very much. I`ve checked his location and it turned out to be my city: Belgrade, Serbia. I`ve seen the artist info – and it turned out that i actually know the guy! He`s well known in Serbia as SevdahBaby, doing some disco-funky-vocal-housey stuff (with a hint of Balkan music from time to time)… But this is something else, it`s a RawButt:

“Milan Stankovic a.k.a RawButt is no stranger to futuristic concepts, nor to raw, butt-shaking tribal beats. He is a veteran in both areas, as he is an architect by education and also a full-time posterior lover. This raw-butt wordplay explains the whole „robot“ idea perfectly, since the beats Milan makes are both „kraftwerky“ and also irresistibly physical and funky. If you could imagine a loud, lustful robot doing the booty shake, you wouldn’t have difficulty imagining the RawButt sound.”

Well, check it out, follow the guy, most of the downloads are free:

RSS B0YS DYY F()()NK

artworks-000110986125-hbyxro-t500x500

Another super-oddity of a track from the very mysterious and unique RSS B0YS.

Great stuff:

It’s taken from their new double album, which I have not had the time to check out yet but I’m sure we’ll come back to it very soon and give it some proper love.

You can look forward to #GB Mix 3 coming from them in the coming weeks but check out the new album too:

Here’s what they say about their new double album:

THIS ALBUM IS LONG. AND THIS IS BIT SHORTER STORY IN ENGLISH ABOUT IT. THIS SET OF TRACKS LOOKS LIKE THE NEW BEGINNING FOR RSS B0YS. THE TRANSITION RITUAL. WHERE THEY GO TO? WHERE THEY FLY TO? WHAT THEY WANT? HARD TO TELL YET, THEY DON’T REVEAL THEIR SECRETS EASILY.

WHAT WE CAN FEEL, INTUITION TELLS, THEY SLOWLY, BUT FIRMLY LEAVE BEHIND THEIR PAST SOUND ELEMENTS, OVERLOADED CHAIN COMPRESSIONS, NOISE MUTATIONS, USE LESS TECHNO TECHNIQUES EVEN, ALTHOUGH DESERT DUST IS STILL IN THE AIR. THINGS LOOK LIGHTER, CLEARER, PURIFIED. THEY STARTED THE JOURNEY. VIVID HORISON.

THIS IS THE DOUBLE ALBUM, TWO MASKED FACES OF THE BAND. THERE ARE NO PLANS FOR LOSING THE MASKS AS WE KNOW, AND THE TITLE SHOULD BE READ AS HIDDEN. YOU KNOW. STILL.

CD ONE, YNHOOMYN IS MORE ABOUT STUDIO WORK, MORE CONSTRUCTIONS AND ANALYSE. IN THIS PART WE HEAR TWO TRACKS PRODUCED IN COOPERATION WITH MIGHTY SEBASTIAN BUCZEK WITH HIS ALTANOVA PRESS MACHINERY – B0YS SENT HIM SOME MUSIC, HE FILTERED IT VIA ORIGINAL ANALOGUE SYSTEM HE BUILD HIMSELF AND IT LANDED BACK IN RSS STUDIO. THIS IS CONTINUATION OF THE WORK, SPECIAL PHYSYC00L SERIES THEY DID TOGETHER AT THE END OF 2014.

SECOND CD, YMM00NY IS MOSTLY BASED ON CONCERT 4TRACK RECORDINGS AND OTHER LIVE SITUATIONS. MORE ENERGETIC DRUMS, CRAZY SYNTHS, PEBBLES FROM COSMOS. AND IMPROVISATION FROM OUTERSPACE. FUNK? YES, IT’S HERE. THE JOURNEY TO MANY DESTINATIONS AT ONCE. DEPARTURE TIME.

THE WORD „COSMOS“ ITSELF, OR BETTER TO SAY IN RSS WAY „C0SM0S“ IT’S THE KEYWORD HERE. SURE, WE HAVE AFRICAN ELEMENTS PRESENT, LIKE WE HAD ALWAYS BEFORE, BUT THEY SEEM TO BE LIFTED OFF INTO SPACE. PROBABLY FUTURE MATTERS ESPECIALLY. ROOTS. GHOSTS. HUES. RAYS. SATURATION.

COVER ART MADE BY AMAZING PUSSYKREW, POLISH ARTISTS DUO, NOW RESIDING IN BRUSSELS IS EXTRATERRESTIAL AS WELL. IS IT A CRYSTAL FLOATING AMONG THE SPHERES? THE COMET WITH THE BUBBLING SURFACE? OR MAYBE THE WHOLE GALAXY HIDDEN UNDER THE GIGAMOUNTAIN OF ASTRO-GLASS? OR AN ALIEN BEING EXISTING IN THE UNKNOWN WAY FOR US? ANYWAY, IT IS SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL, ATTRACTS US WITH ITS COLORFUL, REFRESHING LIGHT. WE WANT TO TOUCH IT.

ALBUM IS LONG, MORE THAN 100 MINUTES. MANY WILL SAY THAT IN OUR PRESENT ADHD, CONSTANT STREAM JUMP AND ALL-SHORT-ATTENTION-SPAN TIMES SUCH ENDLESS ALBUM IS JUST A PURE MADNESS. WHAT CAN I SAY – ONLY BRAVE PEOPLE WILL SAVE THE UNIVERSE, OR AT LEAST WILL STAY TALL. AND MOST OF ALL – CAN YOU IMAGINE SERIOUS INTERPLANETARY TRIP BEING THE SHORT ONE? I WANT TO GO, BACK AND FORTH, MANY TIMES. TRAVEL IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS IN OUR SHORT LIVES. I WANT TO TOUCH IT.

JAN MIKUŁA, JANUARY 2015

PS: BTW – THIS RELEASE IS THE EFFECT OF CLOSER AND CLOSER COOPEARTION BETWEEN MIK MUSIK AND BDTA LABELS. GOOD AND INTERESTING.

Listen to Bamboo Bass vol.7 by DJ Silent Pressure [Interview]

10386304_1068770133148580_191428532311861378_n

There is special case of dj creating good mixtapes, and Dj Silenet Pressure do it very well. We’re living in a period the figure of DJ is missing. Most guys want to be producer. That’s ok ,but you know… there is a difference from be a DJ and be a Producer, you feel it on a mixtape. And when I listened to Bamboo Bass vol.7 I knew that DJ Silent was a real DJ.

Bamboo Bass is a tropical and fresh mixtape. He played sounds like: moombahton, zouk bass, rasterinha, trap, twerk, kuduro, dancehall and reggaeton, all of it in one mix. Sometimes I get me asking: How a guy from Berlin can dig musics from Brazil? Ok, internet – duhhh. But….you know the point rigth? Try to do the same thing, look for some special material from Berlin. It’s hard.

Thinking on that, I asked few questions to DJ Silent Pressure to know more about his work. Before you start read, play on this amazing mixtape. It’s tropical, so I sugest to you open a beer. I did it on second time.

Tell me about tour carrear, how do you started?

I started at the age of 16 with German rap, but quickly discovered the rough flavor of dancehall & reggae music. Short time after buying 12 inches, was replaced by 7 inches and I started spinning mainly reggae and dancehall for a couple of years. What I kept from hip-hop was the fascination for the art of cutting and scratching records which I always try to include when mixing all kinds of music.

Later, I opened up my selection discovering soca music which consequently let me to all kinds of African music which was also encouraged by traveling & playing in Ghana.

In my “early years” around 2006/07 I used to play around with some simple blends mixing dancehall with electronic sounds. This set was the first step into a more diverse direction which was getting more concrete when discovering the first Major Lazer, Douster, SchlachthofBronx and munchi tracks. My first Global Bass Tape “Firepower” gives a good overview about that time.

Over the years the sound developed including more and more genres.

After running the Bass dive party for a couple of years I founded the Bamboo Bass Party with a couple of friends in order to establish a regular party for Tropical Bass in Berlin. We had people like Uproot And,  Murlo or Bomb Diggy playing with us.

In 2011 I joined the Berlin based SWS (sound with soul).

I traveled different countries in Europe playing my sound and playing shows with great musicians, such as Major Lazer, Uproot Andy, Serocee from Toddla T and many more.

How do you create your bamboo series?

The idea came up when we first started the party in December 2011. Being a little bit bored from only having dancehall-reggae partys, we decided to start something up to introduce a broader view on urban music & consequently establish a proper Tropical Bass in Berlin. As most of the Berlin party massive didn’t know what Tropical Bass was, so I wanted to give them that they could listen before they go out that night.

That’s when I started with the Bamboo Bass series. The concept is to illustrated how a selection on a party could look like and summarize the different subgenres of tropical bass in one fluent mix. In the beginning it was more about moombahton, UK funky, kuduro some Soca & dancehall tunes and that house influenced by tropical stuff as well as some cumbia and reggaeton. With the years and the rise of trap, twerk and zouk bass, our selection included those styles as well as the current bashment remixes from guys like Ape Drums. My partner in crime from tropicalbass.com with whom I m running the bamboo bass parties is moreover responsible for the latest zouk and afrobeats. All in all why try to give the people a very versatile danceable selection of global bass club tunes.

Unfortunately I couldn’t do a tape for each party so that the numeration isn’t exact anymore.

 1533960_511168328999523_735531811_nBamboo Bass Party at Berlin

How do you search for new music?

Checking soundcloud + bandcamp from artists and producers, promo mails, checking the blogs of each (tropical) genre + portals like Juno and beatport. Plus exchanging tracks with DJ colleagues.

I Like sounds that are pushing and get people moving but are at the same time not to heavy and overproduced when it comes to the drop.thus I try to avoid the to crazy edm stuff. The tunes need to have a special balance and a catchy and still kind of organic type of sound. Traditional samples or original vocals are also a plus.

Rythymwise I’m a big fan of any kind of dem bow riddim adaption & currently totally up for all productions that mix up dembow & twerk beats like those great tunes from e.g. tropkillaz.

How is your creative process to create a mixtape?

I usually start with some freestyle juggling which becomes more concrete when I m preparing my sets for gigs. From that first ideas for certain cuts and smaller sets result. Then I work on the general concept and think about how the mix should develop (e.g. going from Zouk Bass to Bashment then getting faster ending up in Trap).

When I feel like having enough fresh tunes that fit I start sorting out the selection. Then I look for similarities in lyrics or special parts that could be good in a mixup and for samples to scratch etc. Afterwards I work on the cuts as long as I everything fits and record the tape, add the efx and send it to the mastering.

Tell me your 2 favorites tracks on Bamboo Bass vol.7

Actually there are a lot of personal favorites on that tape but if I have to name two I would go for:

– Prince Lokoni – Luku a meisje (Uproot Andy & Geko Jones Remix)

Because it perfectly blends those African vocals with trap sounds before switching to its uptempo kuduro-ish vibe. Moreover the drop of the trap part has this great kind of deep but still powerful but still not to overproduced sound that I miss in a lot of Trap tracks (which are to heavy for my taste).

– Tropkillaz – Alright.

Because of its great switch up between trap and dembow rhythyms as well as fitting in those feel good vocals (without being to cheesy).

If some one want to contract you, how they can find you?

Check me via my Facebook page (Facebook.com/djsilentpressure) or link me & listen all my mixes via soundcloud (soundcloud.com/djsilentpressure) or say “hola” via mail ([email protected]). If you re in Berlin you can find me at the dancehall party Bass Dive and of course at our tropical bass rave Bamboo Bass.

We are currently working on new dates and there is gonna be a Bamboo Bass compilation coming up. Stay tuned for more!
