Gimmee Gimmee (Bonjay’s Wire Hanger remix)

Following remixes for Mad Decent, Ninjatune, and Ghetto Arc (XL Recordings), Canadian duo Bonjay take a step beyond their local scene with the independent release of the Gimmee Gimmee EP on November 20, 2009.

Their debut will be available internationally via iTunes and Amazon digital. Canadians can get their hands on CD copies (with two bonus tracks) in select independent record shops across the country.

Title track Gimmee Gimmee has already caught the attention of some of North America’s tastemakers: Fool’s Gold co-founder Nick Catchdubs selected it for his Fader 50th Issue Mix and The Rub’s Cosmo Baker aired it out on East Village Radio.

Gimmee Gimmee, Bonjay’s own remix of the title track, and Faat Gyal showcase the duo’s crafty songwriting and willingness to breach the holiest of genre conventions. Gimmee Gimmee borrows elements from both dancehall reggae and 90s R&B, telling the story of a boy who talks a good game but can’t follow through over a sparse landscape of bass and hand claps. It closes out with a dramatic freestyle in ”gypsy”, a secret language spoken only in the South Caribbean.

Bonjay’s wire hanger remix is more dramatically percussive, built on heaving kicks and a chopped guitar lick but shifting direction halfway through to culminate in a crescendo of synthesized bliss.

Bootleg Faat Gyal starts off as a raw dancehall tune punctuated with Bonjay’s signature siren, but switches up mid-way through into a rugged R&B jam topped off with lush harmonies.

The EP also boasts remixes by some of Canada’s top producers. Montreal’s Poirier (Ninjatune) contributes an off-kilter digital dancehall stepper like only he can. Thunderheist (Big Dada/Ninjatune) producer Grahmzilla’s rub is an airy, consciousness-expanding take on UK bass music. Calgary’s Smalltown Romeo (Plant Records) take a different tack, updating the beard disco template with fresh-sounding psych and dub influences.

Bonjay on a mini-tour

To celebrate their release, Bonjay will take to the stage as headliners for a short series of shows in keeping with their basement party roots. Having seasoned their chops with opening slots for international acts like South Rakkas Crew, CSS, Diplo, and Tricky, Bonjay are no strangers to jumpstarting the dance.

NOW Magazine said of their opening slot for Kid Cudi, “Styrofoam Ones and Kid Cudi both turned in great sets, but it was Bonjay’s dancehall-house-electro-hip-hop that we were still thinking about the next day. They’re getting better with each show, and they were already awesome to begin with.”

Ex-Parisian DJ Valeo (Ex-Khiasma, Masala Radio) and forward-thinking Montreal producer Poirier (Ninjatune) will be on board to lend their support in select cities.Friday, November 20, 2009 – Ottawa, ON @ Eri Pan African Social Club
