Well, in case you hasn’t noticed it’s the end of a year, so it’s a time for ‘best of’ type posts… well UMB has already posted his best 2010 mixes, and posting a bunch of ‘best of 2010’ mixes seems a bit boring, so I thought I’d post some mixes which are a little further reaching in their retrospectives… so we’ve got three soulful mixes here with afro, latin and, well just straight up soul flavours, from ill.selection, DJ Needles and ID.

Wicked mix here from ill.selection full of gems… at about 24 minutes in there’s some amazing spooky steel drums courtesy of Amral’s Trinidad Cavaliers Steel Orchestra, followed by Conjunto Tipico Vallenato’s Cumbia Cienaguera which got reconstituted into Samim’s ‘Heater’. Then in the last tune there’s what sounds like distorted steel drums which are quite reminiscent of the synth sound in Township Funk which is kinda interesting… anyway this is what ill.selection has to say about it:

An hour and a half mix of organic, old-school 60s and 70s Roots music that spans genre, nationality, race, and language. They are all hybrids and manifestations of Afro musical influences that pay tribute to our African roots and transnational movements across land, sea, and social borders. Inside the mix you’ll find: Cumbia, Salsa, Funk, Afrobeat, Rara, Carnival music, Congotronics, Merengue, Calypso, Batucada, and Reggae from Africa, the Caribbean, and America.
