Midweek mixxxtapes were a little delayed this week by the unshakable awesomeness of the GB 2 milli compilation… I was half expecting someone to have sent in a mix of all the tunes from the comp by now, but nobody seems to have stepped up to that yet 🙂
Mixes this week kind of representing the weather here in the UK for the past week and a half – first two are pretty chilled & summery, tunes for sitting in the garden with a beer & some tunes & racking one up… But the weather turned this week prompting some more claustrophobic bass sounds. So here’s two mixtapes for coolin in the sunshine from High Life and Tightface, plus a harder & darker selection from DJ Paradigm.

High Life

high life

Cumbia, Afro shuffle, dancehall, and the obligatory smattering of Moombahton from High Life, “Stockholm’s most tropical club night and dj-team”.

Treasures Of The Five Boroughs is TightFace’s tribute to New York rap, matching his electric funk and soulful strut to vocals from the likes of Ghostface, Nas, Talib Kweli, Busta Rhymes, Biggie, and many more. It’s also the perfect showcase for one of the most promising beatmakers around.

This tape works really well as an album, and as an update to some classic joints – take the Busta tune starting at 26.10, which works perfectly but puts the vocal in a totally new context. The beat immediately following at 29.25 is epic too and again the vocal (Mos Def) fits perfectly. In a few places in the mix the edginess of the vocal jars a little with the mellowness of the beat but that’s just me getting picky. Check it:

DJ Paradigm

A dark, atmospheric futuristic bass selection from Bristol’s Paradigm, love the mood of this mix.. The first two tunes are particularly epic, I’m loving the Doorly mix of Mr Scruff’s Moondog remix & I was straight over to juno to get Raffertie’s Ergo We Are Human, an awsesome minimal-future-psy-bass monster. Some old skool UKG action at around the 1 hour mark, wicked stuff…
