This week… South African vibes via Beijing & Berlin from DJ Zhao, Slick Shoota from Norway repping the sound of Chicago & DJ Dyme with some current African urban bangers…

DJ Zhao

Pole position this week has to go to DJ Zhao… Zhao must be one of the world’s leading authorities on futuristic afro haus – only natural for a Chinese dude living in Berlin, right?? – and his mixes are always an education, on top of being pure dancefloor fyah.

Umlilo means fire in Zulu, and this mix takes us back to the Dirty South for a scorching ride through raw township sound. Exchanging smooth for ruff, Umlilo focuses on the connection between ghetto Rap and current Electro, between modern SA House and its Kwaito roots.

Futurism in Africa never disconnected at all from the body: sound design does not become a solipsistic end in itself (even though every timber and texture is perfection itslef); song form stays 100% intact in the electronic club music format; and the beats never bang on aimless and without purpose — robust machine groove reinterprets but absolutely incarnates the magic and essence of timeless rhythmic tradition.

Slick Shoota

Fresh out the ghetto this morning here’s a solid half an hour of juke & footwork from Slick Shoota mixing up classics, brand new exlusives & a few Shoota productions. This stuff really is amazing the more you dig into it, so weird and wonky but at the same time such a well defined sound, kind of feels like it wouldn’t fit in to any taxonomic tree of dance music, this isn’t ghettotech it’s alternate-reality-tech…

DJ Dyme

Found this over at Get Mziki – a poppy housey afro urban mix which will leave you in no doubt as to who the DJ is – he drops a DJ Dyme ID about every 30 seconds – and a lot of this is pretty cheesy to be honest, but there’s about 50% fyah here, well worth a listen.
