This one is just funny.
Mikey Likes iT is the musical identity of Michael Robinson, a NJ based EDM producer whose music is a blend of intricate bass-lines and atmospheric soundscapes. I met him a few times before realizing he even MADE music. It was at some warehouse party in Jersey City that I saw him spin a set of self-produced tracks, and he did so on an old-school synthesizer hooked up to Ableton. His style could be categorized as Dubstep, but he’s one of those guys that easily crosses those thin lines that separate Electronic music styles. This release is incredibly dope, and you can cop it by naming your own price over at Bandcamp. Not only is he talented, but I have a special place in my heart for original production from New Jersey residents.

So Definate has been a busy boy. He’s my good friend, and has been knocking out high quality videos at a furious pace. We filmed interviews with Dillon Francis and Starkey. Took trips to Chicago, Atlanta, Nashville, and Kansas City to film shows I was playing at, as well as a quick drive to Philly to document me headlining Mad Decent Monday. We released an EP through Nu Urban and Rock The Dub together. And this is just what I’ve seen with my own eyes.
White Shadow produced a large portion of the newest Lady Gaga album, and asked Definate to document his life on tour with Identity Festival. I dropped him at the airport, and saw him a little over a week later in Camden, New Jersey. The antics that day were a bit ridiculous, and I knew the final footage would come out fantastic. Definate knocked this edit out in an afternoon, and it looks fantastic.
What’s bothering me is the track that’s being played. We got an email a few days ago with this banger, and it had no tags. The email account this was sent from has been deleted, and didn’t have a name attached to it in the first place. I would love to know who produced this track so we can credit them in the video, and I’m losing sleep thinking there might be a producer out there that I don’t know about. Please share this around and see if one of your friends can help us out!!

I just saw them at the California based festival Earthdance, and their live show was amazing. Not only was the musicianship perfect, but the dancing and stage show was really something to remember. They keep getting better each time.

Benedikt and Jakob just released their second EP on Man Recordings.
After their earlier 2011 EPs (“NASTY BASS” & “CHAMBACU REMIX” on Mad Decent and MUDDERS on MIxpak), the guys follow up their first Man Recordings EP “AYOBA” which featured on Showtimes “Nurse Jackie”.
The new baby is called “CARIMBO” and features 4 tracks full of bass. and bounce. and even Gnucci Banana again (on the track “Coolie Fruit”):
With their second EP on Man Recordings, Munich´s super hybrid partymeisters Schlachthofbronx return with four huge tracks that represent next level bass music.
Leading track “Carimbo” puts the sound of Northern Brasil on the New Orleans bootie map with an irresistible melody and bounce riddims. “Steel Kazoo” is an uptempo smasher that revisists the Trinidad drum legacy in 21st century fashion. “Coolie Fruit feat. Gnucci Banana” is another Bounce influenced track that jumps in your face. And last but not least “Yuh Mumma”, which gives the vibe of the Mexican gulf city another serious European re-examination.
To celebrate the release with all the fans and supporters, Man Recordings and Schlachthofbronx give out Coolie Fruit ft. Gnucci Banana for free! (for a limited period of time only)
Watch the vid, which I’m totally loving, noice to see the Shisha in there, my only vice nowadays, at least 3 times a day!

After two highly acclaimed string driven, predominantly acoustic projects, Natacha Atlas returns to the Global Dance-floor with the Mounqaliba Remixes. Globally celebrated singer Natacha Atlas’ latest release Mounqaliba was a decidedly acoustic affair, recorded with a 20-piece Turkish ensemble and a chamber orchestra & integrating western and Arabic styles. Mounqaliba (which means being in a state of reversal’ in classical Arabic) was a stunning set of original songs, evocative interludes, and a beautiful version of Nick Drake’s classic “Riverman“.
From her days singing with Transglobal Underground to her seminal solo releases, Natacha is acknowledged as a pioneer in fusing Middle Eastern and Electronica styles. The Mounqaliba Remixes finds the vanguard of the global fusion world paying homage to one of the most distinctive & beautiful voices in modern music.
Remixers Beats Antique, Nickodemus & The Spy From Cairo, Cheb i Sabbah, Bombay Dub Orchestra, Syriana, David Starfire, Kaya Project, Radiohiro, DoGbeaTs, Zab Spencer, Another Fine Day, The Kaya Project, 310, EarthRise SoundSystem, Basha Beats take Natacha’s latest opus into new directions ranging from lush ambient journeys to dynamic rhythmic explorations.
This week… Beam Up delivers the dub, Bertie Bass-Hits brings the balkan and Capricorn Productions ministers the minimal…
Not a mixtape per se, but a live set from Beam Up (aka DJ Delay, and various other names…) recorded live at Fusion Festival, with live horns from Beam Up and David Karla and based loosely around some of Beam Up’s favourite riddims.
No tracklist for this one, but they’re all forthcoming from the Beam Up labs…
Bertie – of Innamorati – draws heavily on Boom shakalaka presents: Baltik bass and Shazalakazoo for a Baltikan bass blend, with Jam Jarr’s I Am The Danger lurking incongruously at the end – love that tune but not sure it fits! Loving this mix none the less, have had it on rotation for a few days now. I think I partly love the Baltik sounds & tunes because they’re so similar to Celtic ones, which thanks to Michael Flatley are probably never gonna make it into the annals of cool but which are close to my heart.

This mix is a tribute to the genre of Dub Techno, paying homage to the likes of Deepchord, Echospace and other post-Basic Channel exponents who have taken the sound forward in recent times. The music’s depth and impact evolve over time, where small things make a big difference. Sit back (hopefully at around 1am) and let this wonderful soundscape bathe you in Cold Beauty and Deep Warmth. Enjoy!
Love the name of this mix, so fitting for this kind of music, cold an expansive yet simultaneously warm and enveloping, a disembodied journey through endless tundra, or something equally undergraduate-poetic… Echospace – First Point of Aries at 45 minutes is the perfect distillation of this extremely-minimal-dub-tech sound, and the percussion on the tune that follows is intoxicating in its subtlety and precision. Definitely a solo night time mix, or (as I’ve been finding) an early-morning-sleepy-bus-ride mix.
01 Deepchord – Vantage Isle (Convextion Remix)
02 Echospace – Celestialis
03 Cv313 – Subtraktive (The Sight Below Mix)

The Bleeps and Bass keep coming! I am honestly constantly surprised at how prolific some of the artists in this scene are and also how over the past year the sound of Chip Bass has expanded and matured. Picture from Pixel Troopers.
So it is finally here and it definitely delivers, the single is a bumping piece of heavy and aggressive Chip grime. The track still has that mental Kodek sound but the Gameboy has been produced and mixed in such a way that it comes out bigger and harder than ever. Having UK Grime MC Zebediah spitting on the track places this release in a great crossover area making it accessible to a whole different scene. The other two tracks are the instrumental which really does stand up on its own as a great track and finally the zet. remix we saw last month. Definitely a great evolution of Kodek’s sound and another very solid release in the Bleep Street catalog (follow that link to purchase the single). Kodek has also dropped a freebie on soundcloud/bandcamp which is a nice wonky skweee sounding track (or skwømp or skwugg if you believe they are such things).
Cheapshot has put out two tracks on his soundcloud this month and both show how he is interested in showing his diversity of sound and style. Arguably his zOMG release really set the standard for what Chipstep can be and he could of well explored that sound/tempo more and people would of loved it, but he is constantly redefining the Cheapshot sound with heavy bass being the consistent theme throughout. So one track is a great free download future garage track made on Nanoloop 2.5 (for Gameboy Advance) this track has a great chilled Mount Kimbie style vibe and is great to see what he does with a different sound pallete. The other track is a swagger filled gameboy electro number that even at a faster tempo retains some great and unique uses of rhythm that is quintessentially Cheapshot.

Again posting videos of Knife City live performance because the guy still hasn’t released anything. This video shows the great sense of humour that goes hand-in-hand with most chipmusic and also again proves how brutal Knife City’s Chipstep can be. Seriously need some of these tracks.. You can check his soundcloud to stream some of his other tracks.
I don’t think I have posted any Demoscene stuff on here yet so this is a great first! AceMan from Poland took out the Chipmusic part of Riverwash 2011 (Poland’s largest demoparty) with this AHX track (for Amiga). Its a great little exploration of a couple of bass music genres and is really well done showing off some great tracking skills and at the end of the day being a great track.. Download mp3 here or grab the mod here.
This fellow has not been very active in the chip scene for some time but has always been one of my favourites. His way with melody and ability to make Chipmusic sound gentle and peaceful is really amazing. This new release available as digital download or limited physical CD explores some darker themes but still has a wonderful atmosphere about it and a whole bunch of bass. Highly recommended!
A great video from one of my favourite artists Monodeer with some excellent visuals by the C-Men. Great to see the Chip Bass sound be represented so well in Europe. Hopefully we will hear something new from this guy soon until then pick up his Noise.BMP release if you haven’t already (here).
Thank goodness people are more focused than I am. James over at Example Media has been vigilant in pushing his artists, and I’ve been incredibly busy. I usually already know the artists or labels I post about, or hear an incredible release that sends me sniffing out the producers. It’s nice when people put these things in my hands.
Skittles has 5 years in the game, and has been taking quick stabs at the industry. He has his next single Dot to Dot coming out in a few weeks, but ‘The Lesson’ is set to drop on Camo and Crooked’s album October 3rd on Hospital Records.
UKF picked this single up, and it’s gotten over 200k hits on youtube in the past week. Numbers sometimes lie, but this track is massive.
