I have the internet on smash, and said nothing as my favorite Texan DJ started to post his own Chopped and Screwed edits on a nondescript message board once weekly a couple months ago. Luckily, these tracks didn’t go to waste.
Squincy Jones shot me a link to this a couple weeks ago, and I planned on posting regardless. His taste in music is impeccable, he’s a super good guy, and his mixes are usually flawless. It was undoubtedly good enough for public consumption…But I had a free second today and pressed play.
I hate chopped and screwed mixes. Or maybe I used to? I never understood how this genre was ever popular though. While I respect Screw for being different and groundbreaking, I didn’t enjoy the sound until it translated into original production for those classic Houston records. I’m particular though, and my opinion is usually quite the opposite of those that actually know what they’re talking about.
Squincy Jones is from Houston. I can’t imagine being a part of a movement in a city as it’s happening, and what effect that might have on my output. Houston is represented so well in this mix, and it’s nothing short of inspiring.
