Smalltime Dutch operators Snug Life Records, who’ve dropped the acclaimed Ekoplekz/Drvg Cvltvre split 7” last year and who are getting ready for their highly anticipated Leyland Kirby/Cosmic Dennis Greendige 7” release, have decided to start a series of free releases. These will be focused a bit more on modern dance music in the broadest sense, whereas the 7”s will continue to bring the weirdest and experimental stuff to a turntable near you. The series is called FREE HUGS and the first installment is by young Danish producer LITTLE STEVEN SEAGAL. This cat (real name Lucas Nissen) first grabbed our attention by claiming he made sandpaper. No, that’s not a reference to how rappers ‘make paper’, but he chose this name to define his own brand of broken skweee infested music. And, as it turns out, he actually works in a plant where they make sandpaper… Can you see how Lucas and Snug Life clicked instantly?

His “Sandpaper Volume I” brings together six tracks on the edge of skweeee, broken beat and instrumental hiphop, but also switches over to slowed down house and casiohouse vibes occasionally. He listed Billy Ocean, Drexciya and Dj Premier as his main influences, so there’s no real, concrete musical direction you can pinpoint him at. And that’s actually how we like it! Check out his freebie below, for non-mp3 formats use the bandcamp, for 320 mp’s use the soundcloud or zipped up mediafire bit. Upcoming in the FREE HUGS series are Dutch technoïst Wolfskind, UK ambient head Shorty Bear and a bunch more. Just don’t expect any Skrillex…
