Re-watching part of Fatih Akin‘s movie Crossing the Bridge, i couldn’t help myself thinking of how much i was stuck into my misculture being so remote from all the great things that happen in the world. Happy and sad, because first you don’t need to be living in a big westerner capital to make beautiful music, sad cause not living in a big westerner capital can result in you being fairly ignored despite your talent. That saying Istanbul is a great city, self-sufficient in all aspects. And i’m sure they don’t care about being considered by the European or American continent.
Crossing the Bridge : the sound of Istanbul a film by Fatih Akin
What i noticed in the Turkish modern music is the persistence of live instruments with electronic, which to me seems an approach really opposite to ours where we try to emulate every single instrument with our machines – of course i caricature.
Minas is a Turkish Dj, leader of the crew S.O.A.P running the club Mini Müzikhol. The club is more of a laboratory, where musician can experiment different approach of music, through improvised jams. Eurasia is a musical collective including Minas and Baris and a few others. The quality and the spontaneity of the music is a delight.

But good things are not only happening in Turkey. Check this band from Morocco/Palestine.
“Da Arabian MC’s (Suhell Nafar, Tamer Nafar, Mahmoud Jreri)
Heralded by the major French newspaper Le Monde as “the spokesman of a new generation,” DAM, the first Palestinian hip hop crew and among the first to rap in Arabic, began working together in the late 1990s. Struck by the uncanny resemblance of the reality of the streets in a Tupac video to the streets in their own neighborhood of Lyd, Tamer Nafar, Suhell Nafar, Mahmoud Jreri were inspired to tell their stories through hip hop.”
From the official website.
Beautifully arranged, touching, over romantic, excessive, with lyrical outburst, the tracks are what we love and hoped to find in such an ambitious band. Crossing the bridge of cultures DAM is the union that is, while said to be impossible. Their music speak many languages. You just need to listen.
DAM – a letter from prison
DAM – Juliano’s way
DAM will be touring the States end of March.
“Initiative artistic avant-garde from representatives of the Counterculture Casablancaise, Dubosmium an artist whose innovative and experimental work were appreciated both inside and outside of Morocco, Dubosmium is a performance combining arts and cultures electronic music.”
From SC page.
I met Dubosmium a few years ago. Great guy, modest, and passionate about music, his curiosity as wide as his culture, he was already working on spearhead projects in Casablanca.
DUBOSMIUM – Waragine A ragine
You actually know Dubosmium if you’ve been following ShazaLaKazoo. He actually remixed for them Brasshopper Plague. An 8bit madness, crossover between Venetian Snares and Super Guachin on amphetamins, with a lovely Balkan flavour of course.

Also know that Dubosmium releases are available for free (except the track reserved for a charity project). You’ll find them on Fresh Poulp Records weblabel page.

Hope you did so, cause this superb band from Haifa might come up with some good surprises soon ! By that time you now can put lovely images on the beautiful track Sparks as they recorded a live session a few months ago. Great performance !
