Munchi - Perreo 101 (Cover)

I’ll start off this post by breaking down Munchi’s favourite Poem from yesterday because it might provide some clues as to his state of mind:

‘The Wanderer’ – Anonymous

“Some readings of the poem see the wanderer as progressing through three phases……

1. First as the anhoga (solitary man) who dwells on the deaths of other warriors and the funeral of his lord,

2. Then as the modcearig man (man troubled in mind) who meditates on past hardships and on the fact that mass killings have been innumerable in history,

3. Finally as the snottor on mode (man wise in mind) who has come to understand that life is full of hardships and impermanence and suffering and everything is governed by God…..”

However, the speaker reflects upon life while spending years in exile, and to some extent has gone beyond his personal sorrow. In this respect, the poem is a “wisdom poem.” The degeneration of “earthly glory” is presented as inevitable in the poem, contrasting with the theme of salvation through faith in God.

The wanderer vividly describes his loneliness and yearning for the bright days past, and concludes with an admonition to put faith in God, “in whom all stability dwells”……..”

MUNCHI : PERREO 101!

Now, enough of that Deeep shieeeeet, let’s get down to it.

“This is a project I always wanted to do, ever since I started making music.” – MUNCHI

That really says it all.  This is what started it all off for Munchi, the main reason, this goes down to the pure essence of his whole being as a Producer.

As he says in his lil’ write-up below:

“These tracks do not pretend to be anything. It’s nothing new, no builds, you know all of the overused samples and almost all tracks are around 2 minutes. Here you got 10 tracks to satisfy all your ’04 Perreo needs that were long due, even twerkifying your favorite Reggeton tracks just to remind you that you still are in ’14.”

Munchi goes back in time to around 2004 to pay homage to the sound and vibes he loves so much but brings them back up to date with a humongous BANG!

For Munchi this must be the most important release he’s ever put out, it will be his personal favourite in any event.  A record where he has not only paid homage to his favourite Reggaeton artists but where he has actually worked with some of them on it.

That’s a bit like doing a Beatles record with members of the Beatles, recording Be Bop with John Coltrane, doing an ambient album with Brian Eno, creating electronica with members of Kraftwerk, making a disco album with Giorgio Moroder or making some Daft Punk with Daft Punk.  That’s how special and huge this is.

I am just listening to this album as I am writing this post and my brain is being blown to bits.  I was into Reaggaeton around the period Munchi is talking about but I didn’t know names of the records or artists that well, or at least like an expert.  I remember Toy Selectah sending me a bunch of CD’s from his Machete Music imprint, many of which remain unopened to this very day because he sent me so many duplicates.  I loved it and it excited me.

This stuff reminds me of all that excitement and it’s going to open a lot of new ears to that vintage sound and it’s so, so relevant too at this moment in time with all the Twerk stuff around.  This is stuff you’re gonna be able to mix up with that shit and basically cause an apocalypse on the dance-floor!

This reinforces Munchi’s mad GENIUS!

Munchi - Perreo 101 (Cover)

What Munchi says about it all:

Last month I wrote that I got tired of over polishing everything, which resulted to the Rasterinha project. This month we are going out there friends, way out there:

DJ Blass’ Reggeton Sex is getting introduced to 2014: Perreo 101!

Fuck man, where to even start on this one. I decided to throw everything overboard and do this project. If you are Latino and you grew up on the sounds of Reggeton, you are probably going to have a heart attack rn. This is a project I always wanted to do, ever since I started making music. This shit is something I grew up with and eventually made want to make music – Reggeton. Not just any kind though. It’s all about the early 2000’s era of Reggeton. DJ Blass was on top of his game with a sound that on one hand sounded extremely cheesy, ripped off all the hits of that era and lacked more than it actually had but damn, there isn’t a thing in the world of music that I love more than this. Rafy, Anqueira, Goldy, Luny Tunes, Tasmania, Dicky, Eliel, DJ Joe, etc. ALL LEGENDS!

Blass is the absolute king of Reggeton in my eyes, so you can see this entire project as a dedication to his work. The way the productions always would catch you off guard, the fact that they would have 278982 tracks in 1, the pure randomness/inside jokes of it, the over the top lyrics and just the fun that oozed off the tracks. Genius man, fucking genius.

This is the time that Sean John clothing was present in every Reggeton video, Daddy Yankee and Nicky Jam were best friends, the time that Sir Speedy wasn’t considered annoying, the time that when Blass put his vocals on the track you would go fucking apeshit, the era when just about ANYBODY could get away with singing extremely bad and STILL be that dude: S/o to Plan B, Tito el Bambino, Wisin Y Yandel, Zion. I SEE YOU MAN.

Now they actually can sing and the productions got cleaned up. It was after this that I started listening to/making other genres. When I eventually found out about Moombahton it was just that – I wanted to start the fucking Sandungueo all over again.

These tracks do not pretend to be anything. It’s nothing new, no builds, you know all of the overused samples and almost all tracks are around 2 minutes. Here you got 10 tracks to satisfy all your ’04 Perreo needs that were long due, even twerkifying your favorite Reggeton tracks just to remind you that you still are in ’14.

By recording myself, using vocals that got recorded during my stay in Miami in 2012, a lil helping hand of some of my favorite Reggeton artists, and the lovely Frikitona assisting me in bringing 2004 back to reality, becoming my personal Jenny ‘La Voz’. I don’t think you can imagine how much fun this was making and what an honor it was to work with all these legends that have inspired me so much over the years.

I hope you guys digg! It’s all about Delay Llama, Plucked!, Golden Crashes and snare switch ups will NEVER DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
