Because of all the moombahton heat, which still isn’t over yet, I had to skip my cumbia roundup for one week. But what is consuming most of my time is still all the last bits of primary work that needs to be done before I can finally graduate. But I realise that I cannot leave you without cumbia for again another week. Can I?
That’s why I resort to another format, just for now. I’ve seen this style on some other blogs but for me it still feels like some sort of lazy-blogging. For me, the power of good blogging is not just in sharing music, but also in doing justice to the artist. So usually for every track, I try to write something not just about why I think a track is special, but also how the artist fits into a broader scene, where it comes from and where it seems to be moving, and how dj’s and fans interested in cumbia all around the world can become part of this particular movement and help extending it. In practice this can be very difficult. Nothing is easier than missing information, getting it wrong, or unintentionally but still totally misrepresenting it. Especially when working from a country where, as I said earlier, cumbia is still a quite unknown phenomenon.
When saying this I also realising even more strongly that I am, again, missing what probably the best cumbia event on the entire European continent: Fantástica: Un Cumbia Happening, which is going on just now as I am writing this. This party is held only twice a year as far as I know and is really the destination of a pilgrimage for European cumbiamberos. They look forward to it, basically from the very moment when the last song on the just-gone-by party ends and they walk, tipsy and deeply happy, out of the venue to enjoying the morning sun over Amsterdam with the warm cumbia sounds still sweetly lingering in the backs of their heads.
On tonight’s lineup are again the La Banda Fantástica live band, Rebel Up Soundclash, Sebcat, LeBlanc, Makina and Dj Rengo Estar. Yes, I want to be there so badly that it really hurts my cumbia heart!
Since I’ll be surely done with everything within a week from now, I will most definitely be reporting from Colombia Cultural Festival in Amsterdam, where traditional Colombian cumbia is always an important ingredient!
But, coming back to what I said, this week I’ll just share the newest tracks with links where to follow the artists. Next week I’ll be back with a regular post again. Enjoy your cumbia and first, enjoy this excellent introduction into the Peruvian digital cumbia scene, delivered by Thump!
