Generation Bass Presents The Portuguese Bass Underground.
To paraphrase one of the greatest authors ever, “something is rotten in the state of Portugal”. Still one of the poorest countries inside the European Union, the country has seen an enormous rise in creativity. Is it the proximity to North Africa? Is it the smooth Mediterranean climate? Is it the poverty forcing creativity? We don’t know. We’re not economists, historians or politicians. We do know music though and we recognise talent when we see it. And boy do we have it coming in strides from Portugal right now!
The unique sounds that are growing and mutating in Portugal have had our attention for some time and this is a project we’ve been working on for the past 12 months. We’ve bundled some of these producers and artists together in an EP that showcases their sound. This really is something fresh that’s going on right now. Blending elements of House, Kuduro, Afro, Zouk, Fodencia, Tarraxinha and Tribal music these tracks have an awesome energy in common and also a unique outlook on the new sound that is being created at present.
This EP consists of 8 official tracks that will be available in all the digital stores worldwide and 4 Bonus tracks that we’ll be giving away for free. It takes in some older, more experienced producers with some newer, younger talent. We are pretty sure everyone will agree that this is one of the liveliest Bass scenes in Europe right now.
Something big is happening in Portugal and it has nothing to do with the Fado. Buraka Som Sistema started a small revolution a few years back with their take on Kuduro and then once again last year when they gave their blessing to Zouk Bass. This led to a new surge of exploration and interest in forgotten/overlooked genres like Tarraxinha, Tarraxo and Fodencia.
At our modest little blog & label, Generation Bass, we are proud to be able to show these new developments to you and hope we can also move the scene forward by helping Portugal showcase their own, ridiculously talented producers. Support these guys and spread the word: The Portuguese Bass Underground is coming for us all!
The official EP has everything. From the slowed-down-to-a-super-funky-crawl Zouk Bass of Bison & Squareffekt’s “TGYP” with its epic string arrangement, reminiscent of the Scarface synth driven soundtrack, to the up-tempo tribal drum computer sounds of DJ NK. All these songs are about driving percussion that make you want to cut it loose on a dance floor. Paparazzi’s “African Roots” has that raw African vibe that we know and love from the grimy Kuduro mp3’s we’ve been playing the last 5 years, while the polished sounds of “Suave” by SR Mala Noche & Roulet take the sound to another level with slick girly samples and a new take on a trap beat with Afrobeat percussion and sounds. Add to that the raw Fodencia and Tarraxo vybz found in the crazy riddims in the tracks by Deejay Anderson aka Anderson Teixeira and Dj BeBeDeRa and you have another layer to the yet unexplored Portuguese Bass Underground. In the past year rising from that same unexplored bass underground are DZC Deejays whose track Tropical displays the deepest and darkest corners of Future Tarraxo aka Zouk Bass. The most established Artist here is Diamond Bass who we, Generation Bass, skyrocketed to International recognition on our blog which lead to him being picked up by Branko’s label Enchufada and here he delivers a funky Tribal cut that is as much addictive as it is hypnotic.
The 4 bonus tracks don’t let up either with King Kong’s edit of Ying Yang twins once again sending a warning sign that he means business this year. Beat Laden who has worked with the likes of Batida comes up trumps with a dub driven dancehall edit, whilst another of the previous wave, Toxic Bungula aka Infestus slows down a Buraka Som Sistema classic. Finally, the bonus tracks end with a track by one of Portugal’s leading commercial lights, DJ Ride, whose hazy psychedelic electro dub wraps up this release in astonishing style.
