I can’t deny it. In the midst of all the rush, Sexxy Saturday Cumbia is temporarily a once-in-two-weeks thing now. I was planning to do a World Cup Special but, pushed away by important matches yesterday and today, I haven’t managed yet to do such a writeup. Next week will still be a World-Cup special. For now, a minimalistic but exclusive
Sexxy Saturday Lazy Sunday Cumbia.. Enjoy!
The regular mixtapes for Regional Label are a central part of our cumbia posts and usually feature on top of everything. This new edition from the Argentinian global bass producer Bongo Laser, which has been out for a couple of weeks already, somehow escaped the radar. If you like cumbia in combination with a deep and futuristic blend of bass grooves, this mixtape is your ultimate lazy Sunday afternoon pleasure. Enjoy an hour of Andes-latin-tech, deep cumbia, dubstep, juke and trap!
The new, 31th edition of Pedrolito Radioglobal‘s Tropicalizacion mixtape series is another example of cumbia featured amongst many other flavours, this time going into the direction of oldskool reggaeton, dancehall and hiphop!
Like Regional Label, KONN Recordings also publishes frequent mixtapes. The most recent example is a stunning mix by the visionary Argentinian ancient-futurist Mr. Toé. ‘Latin American Roots’, the first edition of a new series, presents a mesmerising palette of organic, folkloric sounds from Latin America!
Just yesterday, 3ball and cumbia heavyweight Dj Gecko uploaded a great mixtape with Mexican-style edited cumbias. This mix will make you dance from beginning to end!
It has been a while since the last time he released music, but the Paris based Chilean-French digital cumbiambero Manduka is back this week with a fantastic EP. ‘Burdeos San Juan EP’ is an ep built around a track with the same name that came out half a year ago. Like the original tune, the other tracks too focus on an atmospheric blend of “deep” and “dub”, combined with tasty cumbia grooves and a hint of zouk.
A couple of days before his mixtape Dj Gecko also released an EP with five fresh cumbia bangers, some of which explore the distinctively Argentinian urban-villera flavour, while others are delicious examples of timeless Mexican sonidera grooves. One by one perfect tunes to play on mainstream latin and cumbia nights!
4:20 Music Flavor and Henry Henry are both experimental latin producers with a unique, often dark-edged style. Last week, the hyper-productive alchemist 4:20 Music Flavor released a compilation of edits of Henry Henry’s work, creatively mashed up with a wide array of different songs in in almost any thinkable genre.
For frequent readers of Sexxy Saturday Cumbia, Dj Caution is definitely no stranger, featured often with both productions and mixtapes. But what you probably don’t know yet is that he recently formed a new band, called Sonido Culebrero, together with percussionist Sergio Skaiwaka, guitar player Fernado Ochoa. A couple of weeks ago, the group’s first release, ‘Sonido Amazonico’, appeared as an exclusive release for Cassetteblog. Since this week, this beautiful tribute to the legendary chicha band Los Mirlos can also be downloaded from the artist’s soundcloud!
Back in the days when I started blogging for Generation Bass, Polymiller was one of my favourite digital cumbia producers. I lost track of him over time and finding out he is back after half a year, with this deliciously trippy cumbia-dub tune made my day today!
Two weeks ago, we saw a remix from Turbo Sonidero Futuristico of a cyber-futuristic trap tune. This week he dives into the obscure cult shadows of hardcore rap, cumbiafying Tommy Wright III‘s Meet Yo Maker. Definitely not a tune for the faint of heart and Turbo Sonidero manages to translate its violent atmosphere into an amazing dystopian futuristic cumbia vibe!
Next to his compilation, 4:20 Music Flavor has been releasing a lot more music as well. But not all of it is cumbia and because the list is vast, I just selected the one tune that blew my mind most of all: a fantastic dark, rock-hiphop influenced track, based on an original by the one and only Dj Shadow!
Most strongly on the hiphop side of things is this hort but great mini-track by Mc Mex Tape!
A huge mixtape and an even greater EP wasn’t enough yet for Dj Gecko, who uploaded a demo for another fresh new production just this morning!
Grupo Kual is one of the most, if not the single most popular sonidera bands of Mexico. Last week, the Mexico City based duo Real Cumbia Activa (for the readers who don’t know yet, RCA = Fake Moustache + Albert Dj) did this nice chopped ‘n screwed edit of their 2009 song ‘Rumba Frenesí‘!
A while ago, I introduced the Lima-based digital tropicalist Unqa in the surprise-section. This week he is back with a moody cumbia track with Unqa’s characteristic melodic, yet highly experimental style!
..also check out the retro-futuristically flavoured cumbiaton tune he did last month!
During World Cup times, excuses to chill and party aren’t restricted to the weekends and some good vibes either to celebrate a victory or to push away a defeat as quickly as possible ar always very welcome. These nice and catchy tunes give you just that!
Last year, the Argentinean nu-cumbia band AltoPeru did an epic, unlikely mashup of Kraftwerk‘s 1978 techno classic ‘Das Model‘ and Damas Gratis‘ 1999 cumbia villera classic ‘Los Dueños del Pabellón‘. This week Alto Peru presented a nice remix of that mashup by Don Alex!
I’m closing with even more epic “moombia” vibes, from Rafael Aragon, who is just about to release a whole new album on Latino Resiste, with this tune as a first foretaste. We’ll keep you updated!
