SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – NOVEMBER

sexy123

Art by Tropi Delia

This month, La selva moves into winter cumbia style, with bigger warmer basslines  to keep everyone cosy at home and on the dancefloor! There are loads of amazing tunes out, here is a selection of the best below! We hope you enjoy!

Silly Tang selected:

Carmelo Torres

http://uonset.com/es-ES/descubrir/52-world-music/357-carmelo-torres

To start this month Sexy Saturday Cumbia, some very sad news indeed, but that we can all help towards. The great maestro Carmelo Torres got his sweet accordion robbed last week. Here is a page where you can actively participate in the buying of a new one for him. Even if you cannot put any money, share it! A very good cause for a much needed artist

Lascivio Bohemia – La Visherita Flashera

To follow getting on some deeper vibes via our champion Lascivio Bohemia ! Once again he comes through with a delicate but very hard hitting cumbia called, La Visherita Flashera. The production behind this man is top notch every time but in this one we can feel the drum patterns being really worked on. Very spooky synth or instrument noises which would have blended perfect into your Halloween fiesta.

San Ignacio – Os Ventos (Fertil Discos)

I wanted to stay within deep cumbia and what better track to bring you than this one by San Ignacio! Also on a great label which I have had the pleasure of meeting the owner, the great Jin Yerei . Normally not my type of music but this track caught my ear via its guitar strings and deep kicks. Very soothing tune indeed.

Stereo Beaver – Pelicula (Folcore)

Let’s stay down there within the deepness for a while eh! This is an altogether bomb of a compilation compiled by the mighty label Folcore. Lots and lots of good tunes on here but a couple have really grabbed me. I’m not sure what exactly pointed me in choosing this particular track apart from the way it has been put together. I think the lay out is absolutely on point. And as the winter is settling here in Madrid this melody goes perfectly with the clouds passing by.

Nixtamal – Eru Ara (Folcore)

So people will start saying “your French, his French” you campion him a lot! Well lol I have actually never had the pleasure to meet Nixtamal and I can tell you I would love to! Now to come back to music and production (no hippie business here). This track also to have come out on the Folcore compilation first of all has vocals which reminded of the very famous French film “The Chorists” even though I’m sure it’s not taken from there. That’s what grabbed my ears first and then the pushy mids Nixtamal always brings in his tunes are larger than life. Lovely drum work, but oh god I love this bassline!!!

Poupa Honk – The Great Dog (Folcore)

So this month for me Folcore came and did it properly, and I know personally that next month they have plenty of other surprises.

So this track is by a producer I didn’t know before, which really interested me because he has come through with a whole album of various beats. I love strings and kicks so you will understand why I chose this one to present this album.

Loquera Tradición – Santa Muerte

As you might have realised, I dig a lot of acoustic Cumbia and I truly respect its foundation. Where here is a cumbia track which blends at first the very sharp acoustic sounds and then drops into a slow digital monster! Never came across these guys but I love the way they combine the old and the new.

El Remolon – Radio Gladys Palmera

Here I wanted to present this fabulous video of the great El Remolon which I met last month. This video has been shot in the studios of a great local radio called “Radio Gladys Palmera” which I really respect for all there efforts and work. To come back to the video this is from his new EP on Fertil Discos called Senderos. A very political piece of music if you ask em and here an superb version of the track called “Guerreros del Amor”.

Aztek 732

Was it Halloween this month passed? Well yes it was if you weren’t already aware… No this mix is no joke! A person I had the pleasure to meet about a year ago has dropped this killer skilled mixtape for all our Halloween musical needs. I have to say sometimes in the Cumbia world we encounter some djs which are good but not topatop, well here is an ill mixed session by Aztek732!

Dj Masaya

Cumbiah! Mixtape (Selected and Mixed by Dj Masaya)

https://www.mixcloud.com/estebanmasaya/cumbiah-mixtape-selected-and-mixed-by-dj-masaya/

Just a little mention of this real nice mix from our good mate my Dj Masaya ! Look out for its filled proper nice cumbia hits and as always very smoothly mixed from the most famous moustache in the cumbia world.

Rafael Aragon

And to finish my month´s selection who else than our top shotter badboy Rafael Aragon. Real tropical vs Bhangra gangster this time he has come to run it with this tight little mix dedicated to the Colombian folklore. It is filled of rudeboy styles and proper dapper tunes. (Hopefully Mr Rafael would have got the joke) No seriously this is an excellent mix to get more Colombian musical culture within you!

Coconutah selected:

6Blocc – Ragga Cumbia 4

Bass music producer 6Blocc presents a “round of cumbia edits of classic reggae and dancehall classics”. What a great release! I have been secretly hoping to have cumbia edits of these classics for years, and here they are! Brought together by heavy bass and trappy cumbia beats, this is sure to get the dancefloor grooving!

Angeles Azules – Cumbia Suavecita (Nacho Libre Remix)

Digital style! Atmospherics, synths and guitars take you on a journey into digital cumbia as a stylish beat pumps in the background. Sound good? This is cumbia suevcita remix by Nacho Libre.

Dengue Dengue Dengue! – The Enemy (Sonidero Sabotaje Bootleg Remix)

Here´s a nice little edit of Dengue Dengue Dengue´s the enemy, remixed into a slow cumbia sonidera style stomper. It keeps the vocal hooks and the atmosphere while radically switching the beat up – the guiros are pretty relentless and the result is hypnotising.  Check out Sonidero Sabotaje!

Jairo Mendez & Tropikore – Peru Bass (6to Aniv. Cassette Blog)

Bass cumbia in full glory with Jairo Mendez & Tropikore distilling a cut of dirty, bassy cumbia, full of their signature sound. Wobbly bass lines are matched to perfection with a funky guitar and choice vocal cuts, while a heavy guiro rounds it off. Check this badboy out!

Kaygee selected:

Kike Pinto – Mi Corazon (El Búho Edit)

What better way to begin my month’s selection than with an edit by El Buho. I will probably be repeating myself when I say that he has once more managed to bring in his world to the original tune with smooth and deep touches all around whilst keeping the original folkloric vibe. It’s an absolute beauty !

El Búho – Pehuenche (Gente De Los Piños) (D R O S S E L)

And this month El Buho delighted us with another release, which came out on an amazing compilation: ‘VAgabunden Teil 1’. The whole tune is incredible, but I’m sure you will notice how the subs just take you to the next level. I simply recommend that you press play and enjoy the journey. And don’t forget to check out the whole compilation, which has loads of great tracks including a wonderful one by San Ignacio.

Cigarra – Hilda (Dj Nirso Edit) (Tropical Twista Records)

This is a beautiful spaced out edit by DJ Nirso. It has a lovely electronic approach to the usual cumbia beat, with a load of atmospheric shakers and cowbells to enhance the trip. It’s always a pleasure to hear Nirso’s works. Make sure you check out the whole Remix Ep on https://tropicaltwistarecords.bandcamp.com/album/cigarra-l-mbica-re-edits-tropical-twista-records-2016

INTICHE – Zurka (Cassette Blog)

Now this is hot hot hot !!! Cassette Blog have just released another one of their banging compilations, celebrating their 6th anniversary, and Intiche landed with this incredible bass business. The progression in the whole tune is amazing; it takes you, slowly but surely, into a profound undergound atmosphere.

Grab the whole compilation for free on https://cassetteblog.bandcamp.com/

King Coya feat. La Walichera – Tierra de King Coya (ZZK Records)

Yes yes yes, King Coya is back ! Here’s the first preview of his forthcoming second album on ZZK Records. This tune shows a great mix of traditional elements mixed in with heavy kicks, basslines & spaced out synths for an all in one wicked tune, leaving us eager to hear the whole album in 2017.

LA VIDA ES DURA (versiondub) INTI ZIMAN

Some of them drop cumbia bass, and Inti Ziman has just dropped Salsa Bass !! Absolute rinse out ! I love how he has maintained most of the salsa rhythm and added a fat bassline to it.

Bert Kaempfert – Afrikaan Beat (Time to beat)

So this is not cumbia, nor salsa, but I’m sure a lot of view here love a bit of Samba, and especially when it has a hint of drum’n’bass added to it ! Straight out of Madrid, Time To Beat always releases some really nice sunny and groovy dnb edits. Make sure you also check the salsa dnb edits he has on his soundcloud.

Ondatrópica – Hummingbird

Ondatrópica are preparing a new album, ‘Baile Bucanero’ on Soundway Records or 2017 and it’s looking tasty.

Tropical Frequencies: A brief history of Peruvian cumbia (Native Instruments)

Native instruments are coming up with interesting short videos recently, including this one, with a little introduction into part of the traditional Peruvian cumbia sounds.

Like every month, as well as he great amount of releases that have come out, there has been a huuuuge amount of lovely mixtapes from all over the place for us to enjoy, and here are some of them:

Dj Nirso Mixtape 031 – Festival Nómade Colombia

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA — OCTOBER

sex-sat-cumbia-dar-al-naim-2

Artwork by Dar Al Naim

So here we go for this month´s edition of Sexxy Saturday Cumbia. The autumn is always a prolific period for musical releases, and as you will see below, this time has not disappointed. Check out a fresh selection of cumbia inspired tunes below:

KAYGEE selected:

Frente Bolivarista Vol.4 – Nômades

Has Christmas arrived a few months early? Well it certainly looks like it. This compilation has come out straight from the woods, after another great Nomade gathering, which was held in Germany not so long ago. The track list is simply perfect and includes some of my favorite producers of the moment such as Pigmalião, Vruno, Matanza, Spaniol, Dandara, Kurup, El Remolon, Intiche, and many others that I had the pleasure of discovering.

“Nomade is a festival, music label and artist collective seeking new sound territories merging the contemporary to the ancestral Latin America folk.”

Hit play and enjoy the whole lot!

El Remolon – Senderos (Fertil Discos)

So here it is, El Remolon’s new album released a few weeks ago on Fertil Discos. From what I read on their website, this work seems to be a new step for him, taking a new direction, slightly more experimental than his usual banging digital cumbia. The variety of beats and influences found in this album is really interesting: “It travels across rhythms and formats: acid sounds, house reminiscent bases, trap, deep voices, autotune and synthesizers that could either come from a minimal track or a cumbia villera”. I really look forward to hearing these new beats live on a big soundsystem.

PrΛ.Λ.H – Chamada Remixes (Nomade Records)

What a release! I must say I was already a huge fan of the original mix, so hearing so many new versions in the hands of Vruno, Pigmalião, RLHBSLCN, Dandara, Steffen Kirchhoff, Trippin Jaguar and Ninze was just one big auditory orgasm. They have all stayed quite close to the original vibe and structure of the tune, whilst adding their delightful touch to it, which brings them all together in one beautiful EP full of organic & deep sounds, and electronic layers thus creating new textures for our pleasure; and the good news is that their will be more similar projects to come.

P.r.Λ.Λ.H ~ Chamada (Jota Karloza remix)

I don’t really know why this one wasn’t released on the above mentioned EP but it definitely deserves a good listen. Jota Karloza is on my radar these days and has been coming up with some absolute gems. His remix is simply beautiful, with new crunchy details appearing here and there, enhancing his vision of the whole thing; he has also kept the original feeling and progression of the tune, and it works really well.

El Buga – Mini Conga Remixes (Regional Label)

Another remix EP was released on the all mighty Regional Label, including 6

great remixes by Larry SKG, DJ Nirso, VSKA, Mambisa, Bagre and Dúli. They are all really good in different ways, even though they all used the main flute and congas in similar ways to the original; but I must say I have a little ‘penchant’ for Dúli’s spaced out version.

I’m really enjoying the amount of remixes coming out recently, from all over the place; a proof of the constant exchange and will to share, explore and develop new ideas together.

coss – Nagual (El Búho Remix)

“Please enjoy this lovely collection of colourful music gems and take part of this journey thru time and space, silence and recreation.”

El Búho strikes again! I didn’t know the original tune, or any of the other 5 producers involved in this remix EP, but as always, El Búho has hit the spot! He always manages to create his own textures, taking you on a journey into his world. I love it.

Xique Xique – Xaxoeira (Nicola Cruz Remix) (Magic Movement)

It must be the month of remixes or something because loads are coming out from all over the place, and another great one has just landed! I loved the original tune and I must say that hearing the much-loved Nicola Cruz’s remix of it put a big smile on my face. It’s a really nice 4/4 progressive beat which slowly, but surely, gets you grooving, and builds up really well to a lovely 6 minute journey.

Universildo – Pru Etnico (Shika Shika)

Shika Shika is one of the labels of the moment, releasing beautiful journeys from all around the globe. This tune is part of “Botanas II” EP by Universildo, which if I understood correctly was made in collaboration with Chancha Via Circuito. I didn’t know anything about this project but loved it straight away and really look forward to hear more from where that came from. It feels like a deep shamanic dream into their worlds.

RAYADOR – Esquinas (WIP)

El Rayador is back! I hadn’t heard anything from him in a while and was really pleasantly surprised to hear this tune. A banging cumbia beat with a hint of hip hop and a fat bassline to get the groove going. Straight from Cordoba in Argentina, keep an eye out for this guy.

Nicolas Jaar – No (Other People)

https://soundcloud.com/ilttcom/nicolas-jaar-no

So here it is, a cumbia beat in a Nicola Jaar album (out now on his new album ‘Sirens’). This had to happen; it’s probably his Chilean roots slowly coming back to him. I must admit that I wasn’t totally convinced when I first heard it, but I think it’s what we call a ‘grower’. The more you listen to it, the more you get it, and the more you love it ! I heard Jin Yerei drop it in one of his sets the other day in Madrid and that’s when I realized what a good tune it was.

Kumbia Queers – Una, Dos, Ultraviolenta

(Cover de Los Violadores)

After seeing them in what was probably one of the best cumbia gigs I’ve seen recently, I was happy to hear a new cover from the Kumbia Queers. The energy they have is impressive, and the fusion of genres they manage to create is just amazing: proper tropical punk business.

Izem – Hafa (Soundway Records)

For all the Izem fans out there you will be happy to know that his beautiful album ‘Hafa’ is now being released by Soundway Records ON VYNIL!!! And to celebrate the occasion, here’s a little freeby from them. You can order the vinyl directly from:

https://www.soundwayrecords.com/Shop/DownloadDetails?rid=SWR_RE_115

Lascivio Bohemia – Nos faltan 43

Many of you will remember the horrible disappearance of 43 students in Mexico about two years ago; a tragedy which is unfortunately not unusual over there. Lascivio Bohemia has decided to commemorate the event trough this tune and video. “No more state crimes in any country of the world”.

Download full EP at: https://lasciviobohemia.bandcamp.com/album/nos-faltan-43

Tremenda Jauría – Con tol deskaro

Straight from Madrid, these Kumbiaton lovers have been rinsing dancefloors and festivals all around Spain for the past few months, with a touch of punk attitude and a hint of autotune, which actually works really well! If you don’t know them get involved, even though I must say that the real effect of this band really comes out during their concerts.

El Camino de Leda: Recopilando a Leda Valladares (Fertil Discos // Folcore)

Some great campaigns are seeing the light these days and this is one of them. Fertil Discos & Folcore are teaming up for a tribute to the Argentine singer Leda Valladares’ works by working on vinyl release with works from Chancha Via Circuito , El Remolón , TREMOR , King Coya , Soema Montenegro , Miriam García , Paloma del Cerro , Barda , San Ignacio, SidiRum , INTICHE , Doma Tornados , Uji , Celeste Y Las Mil Jarillas, Camanchaca , Pol Nada , Juan Sorrentino , El Pastiche , Mutienigga, and Qechuaboi. I’m really happy to see more and more vinyls appearing in this scene. I won’t say anymore, apart from the fact that I really hope they reach their goal for us to hear the final result very quickly. Find all the info you need about this campaign on: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/el-camino-de-leda-compiling-leda-valladares-music#/

ZZK Films Crowdfunding 2016

Here’s another really interesting campaign to support. Also from Argentina, the ZZK family wishes to continue spreading their love for the Latin American culture but this time under a visual format. I mentioned their first documentary a few months ago on this blog, and really like the idea of seeing more of them, and getting more insight into this scene which we’re currently bathing in.

Support the campaign on: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bring-compelling-latam-stories-to-world-with-zzk-music-films#/

La Cumbia del Magic Conch Spell – Fanfare Concha Mama

I don’t really know what to say on this one, the video is so…..original.

Hit play and enjoy !

Like every month, on top of the incredible amount of releases we have the pleasure of sharing with you guys, here are some mixtapes for you to enjoy:

MATANZA – R.A.Z.A.

Sidirum – Skyy Vodka Mix 16

Bleepolar Mixtape 030 – Festival Nómade Colombia

Peter Power – Voodoocast 009 (Voodoohop)

Jhon Montoya – elita Milano Mixtape

Nixtamal – Mixtape for Inna di Mood & Groovalizacion

JULIO INTI – Sarradinha Parisina Brazilucinado

SILLY TANG Selected:

Los Mexaterrestres – Kumbia Galáctica (ft.DucNoize x Fricci)

Here we go for this month´s selection ! Very exciting time for all cumbieros as the September low has passed, and now we can start creating and getting used to our winter on this side of the globe.

This first track is from Los Mexaterrestres from their album called Kumbia Galactica ! great algum which as the name say covers a very deep spaceship type of cumbia and lyrics ! I personally love the effects and rapping over the rhythms, the heavy kicks on there with the little flute added towards the end to give it a special finish. Great job !

SAN PAOLO – Mágico González – ░░ ▀▀ ░░ тємplо░░ ▀▀ ░░

Our Madrid loco, very crazy and very sexy Magico Gonzales comes at us with this hybrid of a track. Very different from his latest work he takes us on a ride through various breaks, trap, reggeaton all followed by this Indian guitar chord. The bassline of this track is to watch out for as it is very stinky indeed. Magico Gonzales once again, coming with surreal material – music and video. Great work from this locooooooo!

Kumbia Boruka ft. Celso Piña – El Porro Magangueleño

So here we go up a level in my eyes as this is a track by a band I have been championing for a while, featuring the all-time master who is Celso Piña. I personally absolutely love this song. It has all the best components you would want in the perfect cumbia track. AMAZING instrumental as always from Kumbia Boruka and really deep, heart felt vocals. I cannot insist enough that if you have the pleasure to have a visit from Kumbia Boruka in your town go and see them, they are to Europe for me the essence of the cumbia culture and sound.

América afroindígena – Yuka – Las pilanderas (sesión en vivo)

To stay in this kind of acoustic and general rooted cumbia vibe here is a live recorded version of Yuka and a track called Las Pilanderas. I have posted about this label before, they are doing some great work putting out these raw recordings and sharing this original sound so we can really feel like we’re in the middle of the amazon. Please go and check them out, give them a like and a helping hand as we need more projects such as this one to keep this sound truly living on.

Vermilion Bird – Cumbia Mala (Wile Out)

So now we have been through the less electronic side of cumbia for this month, lets go deep and get ravey! Here we have a very dark tune by the Argentinian born, New York based producer Vermilion Bird. A dedicated member of New York’s global bass family, she comes at us with some nasty, moody cumbia, released via the While Out label. The title says it all really “Cumbia Mala,” evil cumbia. The production on this one is so deep. Lots of wicked bassline swaps and rhythm changes. I love the panning work and the horns really makes the tune sound vicious. Love it !

Niño Virtual – La barata fue de Elotes

You want to go in this month ¿ Really in ¿ Well go run tell your friend we have a new killer on the scene ! Niño Virtual with this killer track: La Barata fue de Elotes. What can i say this track combines heavy as bassline with heavy lineal breaks which keeps it Wells tructured and mental changes. I´m not sure how I have never come across this producer but trust me this is fire! The song makes me feel like ants are crawling all over me but in a good way J

STACKED – Rocky Wellstack x MAKI – Hechizo [ADE SPECIAL]

Now we’re all in, we can go further and keep on raving hard ! ha ! This is an instant hit. I know it is not totally cumbia and it has very heavy Moombathon influences but the original sample and for me the best parts of this tune are the cumbia instrumentals and cumbia beats. Then saying this the whole production on this is off the hook. These kicks and highs are just lush and well the vocal instrumental absolute killers when it comes to make you bum shake!

EL Barba Dub – “F…- .. N “

Ok on this track I have to admit as an English speaker first the title shocked me a bit and I didn’t want to post anything related to the bad word 😉

Saying this I know the man having worked on projects with him and I know how South American people say this word. No racism involved and in this particular tune it is actually based on humour. I don’t know if you have seen the videos shared by this dwarf who so badly wants to be a black person? (if not check them out,. Hilarious) Well this track is dedicated to that fella. You can diefenetly recognize the production from El Barba those breaks and this particular instrument he loves so much. Really nice and humoristic tune hermano J

COCONUTAH Selected:

NEGRO DUB – SNAPCHAT CHAT

This is a fun electro cumbia tune from Negro Dub. A sweet build up based around a high pitched up vocal leads to a funky drop where some amazing swirly synths and pads combine with a rolling, percussive cumbia beat to create a dancefloor smasher. Undoubtedly a great option for warming up the club!

Shushupe – Semarang (Tribilin Sound Remix)

Tribilin sound presents a new remix of a Shushupe tune, a heavy bass roller with a Indian atmosphere. Slow paced but with a huge sound, this is sound system cumbia. Eery atmospheres and hindu flutes create a dense, almost claustrophobic feeling, and round off the whole. Love it!

Orihuela M.S.S. – Esta Madre No Tiene Nombre Pero Se Baila Bien

We only just missed this one last month, so here it is! Stomping Mexican cumbia can be crazy, with a fine example here by Orihuela M.S.S . This track is relentless as it never stops growing, and the acid synths are absolutely rinsing! The drums are particularly great and have loads of wicked glitch / reverby FX. Check it out!

Orihuela M.S.S – 24 años de decepciones

I just couldn’t resist publishing this second belter from Orihuela M.S.S, as this is another journey of its own kind. Described as Cumbia Digital Acida, this will hit the dancefloor hard. As usual in his productions, synths are very present and always have awesome, intricate variations.

Bosq y La Candela All-Stars – Ron Blanco Con Coco ft. Luis De la Rosa Solá

Not strictly Cumbia per se, I still wanted to present part of Bosq´s new projects with La Candela All-stars. Described as Reggae salsa, this is a funky number with a great vocal “featuring the immensely talented lead singer of Orquesta Macabeo” and some beautiful instruments in the background!

Dj Brian Lopez – Dance With The Devil (Cumbia Remix)

https://soundcloud.com/djbryandallas/dance-with-the-devil-cumbia-remix

And here we continue with the Mexican sonidero vibes, with some satanic cumbia! Its name says it all; this tune will turn you into a devil worshipper. Dance with the devil!

Erick Jaimez – El Cumbiambero LP

Here is a new Cumbia Lp by Mexican tropical master Erick Jaimez. It has a very Sonidero, rebajado feel all around but covers a variety of styles, from pure cumbialist, instrumental versions, to more minimalist, heavier, trappy styles. There are thirteen tunes so definitely something for everyone over the album. Boom ting!

Loko Bono Ft. Acapulco Zombie – (%_!_¨¨¨_779= Deep Latino $$HIT

https://soundcloud.com/acapulco_zombie/loko-bono-ft-acapulco-zombie-779-deep-latino-hit-c8_0

And another Mexican banger to end this month´s selection! Here is Loko Bono featuring Acapulco Zombie with an atmospheric, hip hop inspired track.

We hope you have enjoyed this month´s selection!

See you very soon for some more crazy cumbia action.

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – AUGUST

sex sat cumbia August

Artwork by Tropi Delia

Welcome to this month´s journey into the hot, misty world of intergalactic cumbias. This selection reflects the sweet, sweaty sound of the tropical summer, and the relaxing, poetic ambience of the oceans. There is a never ending stream of tasty musical treats around at the moment – here are some of the choiciest cuts below:

 Kaygee selected:

V/A – Entre Tiempo Y Espacio (Tropical Twista Records – 2016)

WAOW ! I wouldn’t know where to start with this one. There are loads of amazing compilations coming out these days, but this one hits the spot on the variety of artists and diversity of sounds & rhythms it offers: “As a whole, the album offers an exquisite journey into the mysteries of time and space and reflects a Latin America that is united through a new musical scene that is strong, independent, transcending geographical barriers, and creating new connections.”

Make sure you listen to the while thing, it’s full of gems, as mentioned by the Silly Tang further below.

YEAHMAN! – Minca

Confluencias I: Selva (Shika Shika)

This track is just bangin’. It has it all: a sick beat, a wicked groove, and most of all, a set of beautiful and pure sounding instruments. I’m not sure how they were recorded or sampled or whatever, but they sound great. YEAHMAN is on my hotlist these days; he’s releasing some great tunes. Keep an eye out for the man !

This tune deserves its place in this great compilation, brought to us by Shika Shika. I love that they always find new artists from around the globe; this compilation has indeed brought to my attention many new ones who I had never heard of and who produce some serious tunes !!

GUAZÚ – El Club del Condor

Confluencias II: Montaña (Shika Shika)

And if one wasn’t enough, here’s another set of tracks for our delight from Shika Shika, with the second part of ‘Confluencias’. Another great selection for us to enjoy, with tunes from Nicola Cruz, Spaniol, Quixosis, amongst others; but there’s one that stuck out for me every time I listen to it. He was a stranger for me: Guazu. His tune is so deep, powerful, with a hint of darkness, slowly progressing towards the top of that mountain ! I love it !

Urban Cosmonaut Tales (Urban Cosmonaut Radio)

It’s like Christmas has come early, and it’s snowing tunes and compilations in August ! It’s amazing ! They are all so diverse, and bring to us so many new artists who deserve to be heard around the planet; as seen in Coconutah’s selection further below.

Here, Urban Cosmonaut Tales travels through the tropical diversity of this globe, stopping in different electronic environments. I strongly recommend you take the time to enjoy all of the tunes. They are all very different and come together very nicely in this compilation. The tune ‘Uwi’ by Geju, Betelgeize & J.O. seems perfect to close the whole thing!

ElPeche – Calorzito (Tropikalia Vol.1) (University of Tropical Sound)

Who said compilation ? Here’s another one fresh on the block, straight from the University of Tropical Sound, who we had the pleasure to see play and meet @Tropical Camp. Here’s another great variety of artists, including our beloved Silly Tang and 2G1B and many other ones who we often mention on this blog, as well as this banger by ElPeche. I’d heard this accordion before and really love how he’s used it here, with that groovy guitar and a fat bassline! Wicked !

And if you’re in for a more Shamanic type of experience, check out El Camo’s Ritual.

Contoneo Tropical 2016 (Taciano Records)

conteneo tropical

Stream/Download: https://tacianorecords.bandcamp.com/album/contoneo-tropical

And here’s another compilation that’s well worth a listen. It has a totally different approach to the sounds than the ones mentioned above and definitely has some heavy dancefloor bangers in there!

Vruno – Oxytocin (AKUMANDRA)

Bim ! Vruno’s in the place ! I adore his productions, and particularly enjoy the slow and progressive touch he has! A deep techno beet & bassline to get you going and allow all the rest to slowly build around you. You can really feel how this story needs these 8 minutes to be fully enjoyed & completed ! Big ups !

Make sure you check out the label AKUMANDRA ! Proper deep world business to make you travel through their amazing releases.

Intiche – Ulmos

intiche

Stream/Purchase: http://intiche.bandcamp.com/album/ulmos

This beauty also came out at the end of last month. A wonderful musical journey signed by Intiche. Another slow & progressive approach which always works on me, leaving time to appreciate the whole atmosphere and thickness of the tune, catching every little sound & detail right into the jungle.

With so much music for our ears, here are a few good videos to check out:

The Nu LatAm Sound – Ecuador Episode 1 – The Amazon Voices (ZZK Films)

I was really looking forward to this coming out and really enjoyed the watch. It gives us a great insight into the Ecuatorian artists, influence, roots, environments present in todays scene, and how they are reviving and merging with ancestral sounds. This will be a great set of episodes to watch.

Animal Chuki – Luna (Radio Gladys Palmera)

During their stay in Madrid for Guacamayo Tropical’s event, Animal Chuki recorded this live version of one of their new tunes @ Radio Gladys Palmera. Really nice chilled vibe on this one !

Sesiones Bajo Tierra – QUIXOSIS – “Cordillera” (Episodio2)

Episode 2 of ‘Sesiones Bajo Tierra’ brings to us Quixosis performing ‘Cordillera’ live. I think we just went one floor deeper; I love it !

Lulacruza – Gente Mariposa @ Szimpla Kert

While we’re on the live performance, you can enjoy Lulacruza’s performance of ‘Gente Mariposa’ @ Szimpla Kert in Budapest. Her voice is beautiful; I really hope to see her live soon.

Nomad Frequencies – Teaser Medley 2016

Here’s a wicked project we had the pleasure of seeing live a few months ago in France, a French live duo between machines & instruments, who go from Cumbia to world techno/trance with a hint of Balkan d&b. Great live show !!

Mataga – Mixtape · Viveylate Radio 1×012

Another interesting journey but this time in a flight straight to Brazil with Mataga, presented to us by Viveylate Radio.

And like every month, on top of all these tunes, compilations, videos, projects, which I mentioned above, there are always some delightful mixtapes to be enjoyed, here are some of them:

San Ignacio \IST 045 (Casa Caos)

YEAHMAN! InterCities # 5 (Summer Moments MixTape)

Sonikgroove World Electronica Mixtape

Griffin Crafts – Flavour of The Month -Julio (Shika Shika)

Silly Tang Selected

Kumbiamberos Internacionales – El Siguiente Nivel Vol. 12

This month of August is hot, festive and full of vibes as always! To start my selection this month I wanted to forward this compilation full of great artists. Some of my favourites of course; Turbo Sonidero, Dj Classic y mas! A very good selection out of the true cumbia family from, Mexico, Argentina and USA. All in all, very classic and unmissable with a twist of craziness!

Señor Chancho – Bacallao (Tropical Twista Records)

On this original killer track was the all mighty Bacallao. And then, I came across this remix with the all-around Cumbia Rastafari lol Señor Chancho ! The production of Señor Chancho, one half of the Regional label, is always getting much tighter and solid by the months. This unreal and futuristic beat must hit all the chill outs this summer to get people vaping and getting some cocktails down! So fresh it reminds me of a blend between a strawberry mojito and a lime ice cream 😉

Bigote – Tabaco (Tropical Twista Records)

The grime village king is back for more as always ! On this tip he hits a very deep note with these succulent vocals and this low deep bass. In some notes of this tracks it reminds me of a Mala (DMZ) production because of its atmos and all around production deepness. Bigote is part of the might label Caballito but this has been released on another label called Twista Records. Get the towel out and go run to the beach to stick this on your mp3 players 😉

Unqa – Panoja De Quinua

Now this is what I called a discovery ! The first kick and low bass reminds you of a funky disco tune . Then, Unqa follows with some lovely dubby effects and tribal percussions. On a very minimal tip, this tune is actually full of suprises. Love the flute with a slight effect added on and the real groovy bassline. Great song once again to listen once your sat in your hammock enjoying a nice beer.

VA – Y Desde Monterrey (Rebajado Mx)

Now now now J Another compilation in one month – what a month ey ! This time around it is the Mexican collective Rebajado Mix which are bringing this delight full of Cumbias Rebajadas. The history of this genre is funny and interesting you should check it out if you don’t know it. Rebajado mix have managed to combine such a list of wicked producers under one roof. Producers such as Hydro Selekter – Hnry – Freebot. Really great work from all producers and a superb compilation from it !

El Buga – Mini Conga (Señor Chancho Remix)

Now it seems like Señor Chancho is in full form at the moment. Inspiration and remixes and its best, two great artists from the tropical scene in one superb track. Really groovy bassline with some hits of marimba and flutes works a treat on this one. As I said before it seems like Señor Chancho is full of love for the dub these days and that shows in his production. Really recommended track and also free to grab so go run tell your friends, and keep an eye out for more remixes of ‘Mini Conga’ to follow on Regional

Chakruna – Sabor a Selva ([email protected])

Chakruna is a producer I had never heard of if i´m honest but I came across this video the other week and it totally gripped me. I love the combination first of all of old and new technologies. Transmitted here is an old cumbia song remixed via Maschine MPC type and added effects on top of that. All manual control, and lovely composition of breaks. I´m sure we will see more from this guy.

To end this month’s selection I would like to add some info on where to grab your musical hits at festivals this summer. Here is a list of festivals where you will definitely have a good dance:

Tropical CampIbogaGoulashBalterVisual BrazilFusionBoomtownSecret Garden Party

Coconutah selected:

Sistema Beat Andino – Cumbia Explosiva remixes (Regional Label)

Regional label is an amazing outlet and an even better inspiration for many artists and music lovers. Here they do not disappoint; Sistema Beat Andino open the ball with Cumbia Explosiva, a brooding cumbia dub riddim that takes no prisoners. The torrent of remixes that follow are very diverse , going all the way from sonidero vibes with Sonido Mamalon´s version, to a more trappy version courtesy of Mister teen, to a full steppa dub experience thanks to Loko Bono. Small Fall & Owem G, Barda, El Buga, and Lascivio Bohemia round off the compilation. Big up to all involved for this great EP!

Dr. Dre’s Cumbias (Sumohair Remixes) (Kumbale)

Sumohair returns on German label Kumbale with some two chronic tunes that will take you back, back, back…. Featuring legendary Dr Dre, these are dynamic cumbialistic riddims that are full of chops, changes, and funny little edits.

Nato – Babiley (Urban Cosmonaut Tales)

“Bed time stories you tell to a younger generation”, Urban cosmonaut radio presents a compilation of down tempo, melodic tunes. Here, we focus on Babiley by Nato. Charango´s combine with spacy synths, crazy oriental vocals and groovy percussion to great effect. Very relaxing!

G-Sound – Ritmo Universal Feat. Los Master Plus (Rebajada)

Cumbia dub vibes on show from G-sound with Ritmo Universal, featuring los Master plus with awesome rebajado vocals. G-sound´s signature sound is present with layers of catchy synths and a ton of trippy FX. The rhythm is slow and langorous while the bassline has a deep, gravely touch. Great summer tune.

Tribilin Sound X E.Vax – Hijas (Terror Negro Records)

Tribilin sound is ever-present on our monthly cumbia blogs, and for good reason; new tracks are frequent and always bring heavy, heavy vibes! This is no different, as this collaboration with E. Vax takes us to the very core of spacy electro-cumbia. Check it out!

Motin – Salida Del Sol

Here are some techno-cumbia vibes to begin rounding off this month´s selection; Motin presents Temazcal EP. This is a journey through electro Andean sounds. Harmonious flute and string lines capture the listener´s attention, while a heavy techno beat is accompanied by some cumbialistic Guiros and percussions. Both tunes are a must-hear!

Selector Guita – Business, Share Trades, Easy Money

And an added bonus to finish this summer edition of Sexxy Saturday Cumbia: worldwide, heavy-hitting money maker Selector Guitar presents ‘Business, share trades, easy money’. A very futuristic, capitalism driven sound, this is not traditional electro-cumbia but is an interesting blend between juke, trap, and guiro-madness. Funny vocals add a Guita touch to uplifting stabs and accordion melodies.

We hope you enjoyed this month´s tropical summer selection! See you next month for more stomping, psychedelic cumbia.

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – JULY

Sax Sat Cumbia JULIO Bigote

Art by Bigote

As we get deeper into Summer 2016, here is this month´s Cumbia selection by la Selva – festival edition.

The Silly Tang selected:

Cumbia De Las Estrellitas (Real Cumbia Activa X Plastic Toy Sounds) – Contoneo Tropical (Taciano Records)

To start this very varied and quality month of July I wanted to include one of my favourite producers out there at the moment ¡ The all mighty Real Cumbia Activa. He has brought some ill remixes to the dancefloor and this one is not an exception. A bit trippier than his normal releases, he has gone properly in on the cow bell and vocal effects. A real hit ¡

Sonido Mamalón – Bachabé Kó(Antes Que Nada)

This 2nd selection has come to my attention because it really flirts with the cumbia dub elements I love. The folklore added to it just adds to its roots effect on the ear. Real summer chilling track.

Kraut – Marimba (Shika Shika)

This Dutch producer has brought out a Brand new fresh ep called Especials EP. It is very varied and the production sounds very German. It has a techno style of lineal sounding Groove. I recommend you go discover this producer ¡

Alvaro Llerena Martinez – Mis Amores (Bigote Remix)

Here he is again, the grime King of cumbia making us feel the weight of his mighty kicks ¡ This song originally from the master Alvaro Llerena Martinez has had a slick refix by my good friend Mr Bigote ¡

Malphino – Lalango (Names You Can Trust)

I selected this track to off course to introduce you to Malphino which production is so nice, acoustic sounding and psychedelic to its roots. I also wanted to present this fabulous label called “ Names you can’t trust. “ It has brought out a few vinyl so far and the whole of it has this trippy finish and musical excellence. Please check it out as bringing out a vinyl is a lot of effort, and this label needs all our back up J

Nixtamal – Chinga de Mixtape

Yes I like finding out new producers from France ¡ I have come accross this producer on the new “Cumbia Libertad” vynil compilation and was stunned by his track on it. Here we have a selection of tunes mixed by this cumbia veteran J

Sonido Todomono – Cundé Cundé Cumbé (Alto Perú Remix) – La Niña Emilia

LOVE THIS ¡ Proper summer business right here. Don’t look any further for your ice tea and hammock musical treats ¡ Very folkloric release and real energetic vibes on this tune. Please go check out more of Sonsonete Todomono love the work especially for these very hot summer evenings ¡

GRUPO JU-JUYLAS GUITARRAS LOKAS CON WEPA

Now this group I have been fan for years ¡ Grupo Ju-Juy ¡ Real proper cumbia band they always deliver a semi psychedelic sound and original cumbia grooves. On this track especially we can hear that guitarist going straight to the jungle ¡

Mashup Mexico – Sonora Dinamita – Las Brujas (Cumbia Edit )

I’m new to Mashup-Mexico but I really do think they have great potential. This versión brings us back a old track by Sonora Dinamita and it is also free to grab J Run Run Run ¡

2 games 1 boy – Acid Cumlib (OPL3 via Adlib Tracker II)

This has come out just in time for this month selection ¡ Our good mate and all around nuttah 2 games 1 boy has brought us this track on his analog toes ¡ Very trippy but deep production this tune goes in ¡ Free DL also so run grab it quick ¡

KayGee selected:

SOL 041 – Summer Sol (SolSelectas)

So i don’t know where to start with this compilation?! I’m listening to it again as I’m writing this and still can’t believe how incredible all of these tunes are!! The track list itself, including artists like El Buho, Matanza, Rodrigo Gallardo, Spaniol, Peter Power who are amongst the ones i know, was looking tasty! Every track is a beauty; a perfect blend (and I insist on perfect) between the artists’ organic origins and newer electronic surroundings, creating one immense trip around the world, “going from South American mid tempo, to Shamanic downtempo, to Middle Eastern deep house, to Latin tribal house, to Playa tech, to Ambient cumbia dub.”

Enjoy!!

ÍCAROS(Cantos espirituales del Amazonas) (KONN®)

Here’s another trip, and this one goes deep into the Peruvian amazon, with powerful shamanic chants, recorded by Mr Toé during one of his journeys. He joined efforts here with 3 other great producers (Inti Che, Rodrigo Gallardo, King Coya.) for a project which first came to life in the Nomade Festival in Chile, and then came to us through this EP! I admire how they all manage to keep the original shamanic vibe of the recordings and bring it to the dancefloor in such a smooth way. Big EP!

Wenceslada – Niebla Versiones (Regional Label)

So many great EPs this month! So good to see, and hear! Now this one comes straight from the great Chilean Regional Label, with 6 amazing versions of Wenceslada’s ‘Niebla’ EP, which was also released on Regional about 6 months ago. Barda, Guazú (who i had the pleasure of discovering in this EP), RumboTumba, Doma Tornados, Montoya & Rafael Aragon bring to us 6 completely different approaches to the original tunes, ranging in rhythms & bpms for us to enjoy as a whole; with a special mention to the badman tropical trooper they call Rafael Aragon, who hit the spot with these drums. I always enjoy Rafa’s chilled tunes.

Kike Pinto – Pachamama Pachakamaq (El Búho Edit)

Now simply sit back, press play and enjoy!! It had been a while since we had had the pleasure of hearing one of El Búho’s edits, and this one is just as flavorous as expected. The edit is actually incredible; check out the original tune and see how he has superbly brought his sounds to it, with great space and quality in the production, enhancing the effect of each individual sound, taking you with them on the way.

Johnny Thrash – Acordeón Galáctico (Tribilin Sound Remix)

You recognise that guiro? These shakers? That progression? Tribilin Sound en la casa! This guy never stops; he’s probably already released a few other tunes since this one came out. It’s always so smooth, so progressive, with the whole tune slowly but surely shaping up, in a repetitive yet catchy and groovy way. Big ups!

Panther Panther! – Midnight Ritual (Tropical Twista Records – 2016)

Aie aie aie ! This is banging ! Shout out to Tropical Twista Records for this release. I didn’t know Panther Panther before, but had the pleasure of discovering their work in this new EP. They describe it as a “high-energy, bass-heavy soundtrack to further space exploration in times of darkness”, and I think if you add a few potent shakers and bells to that you get it! Really cool approach to the whole thing.

Lascivio Bohemia – Le Hot Versions

lascivio bohemia - le hot versions

http://lasciviobohemia.bandcamp.com/album/le-hot-versions

Here are 6 wicked versions of true classics, released independently by Lascivio Bohemia. His sounds are incredible. He always surprises me and gets me grooving to different rhythms and new sounds. In this case, I personally find his remix of Carlos Vibes’ ‘Rosa’ simply fantastic!

Negro Dub – 10 Years of Electrocumbia (ZZK Records)

zzkNEGRO DUB

https://zzkrecords.bandcamp.com/album/10-years-of-electrocumbia

And to keep on with the whole version/remix thing, please say hello to ZZK Records latest free release with Negro Dub, here to celebrate the occasion with a whole lot of remixes! The track list is actually very surprising, with Negro Dub remixing tunes from Lito Barrientos to David Guetta, stopping by Stromae and then onto Andres Landero. The final result is actually pretty cool and will surely be enjoyed all along the summer.

Perro Agradecido Cumbia – Detektiv

So let’s switch frequencies and go for some live band business, with Perro Agradecido Cumbia who have been uploading all the tracks of “Ánima en pena” over the past month, and brought to us the 7th instalment a few days ago. Proper psychadelic synths and heavy shakers & cowbells rinsing the place; straight from Mexico.

Orkesta Mendoza – Cumbia Volcadora (feat. Camilo Lara) (Glitterbeat Records)

Another great piece of live music shaping up is el Orkesta Mendoza’s new album, to be released in October; and here’s a little extract! Absolute banger ! The tripped out vocals & sirens, these heavy winds, the synths, with that groovy guitar riff….the whole lot. I love it.

Music is usually orientated to our ears, but can also be appreciated with and through different supports & projects. Here are two projects that currently represent this and I think have their place here:

El Búho – Dj Set · Viveylate Radio 1×09

More info on Viveylate here: http://viveylate.com/

ANDIGENA COLECTIVO – Teaser

And because it would be rude of me not to share some of the mixtapes which came out this month with you in case you missed them, here are a few:

Amuleto Mixtape – Sistema Beat Andino (Edmoon Records)

Eduardo Zambrano – ¡TAS TAS TAS TAS! mixtape

Dengue Dengue Dengue – Clash DJ Mix

Coconutah selected:

Lascivio bohemia – Ópalo

Brand new release from Lascivio Bohemia, this takes into deep tribal cumbia territory with some fast guiros and some tasty tribal percussion, warped vocals and an asian sounding guitar. Sprinklings of trippy pads finish of the journey as the listener is drawn into a dubbed out, strange sounding world that stays with you after the music stops.

Arrebalero – Valle de chalco

Arrebalero delights up with some hard hitting, stomping, synth heavy electrocumbia with this new track, Valle de Chalco. Layers of synths come together seamlessly to take you into a Robo-cumbia world, whilst the pulsing beat ensures your legs keep moving. Check it out!

Pablo Pachacutik – Cumbia Birlocha (Kumbale)

Pablo Pachacutik hits up with a new EP on prolific Berlin based tropical bass label, Kumbale. These are some original remixes as old school folclore tunes are mashed up into their future sounding versions – there are defnitely some nice trap / IDM flavours shining through on this EP.

Syztema – Madre Tierra (Prehispanic Mix) (La Restistencia Recs)

Not strictly cumbia by the book as this has a strong tribal feel to it, the heavy guiros in this track definetily make it worthy of a mention in this month´s edition. This is a great dancefloor track – check how its relentless beat will get everybody shaking. Psychedelic flute licks top the tune off and give it some added crazyness. Big in the game!

Insane Ambient – Cumbia insana

Insane ambient is a “chill-psy” project from Brazil. Here, they have gracefully left us with some deep, deep cumbia chill vibes. This is a very ambient, melodic track, and really hits the right spot with a very progressive atmosphere.

TURBOMEX – Aroma De Pecado (Orihuela MSS Remix) (Caballito Netlabel)

Caballito Netlabel always brings something different and this time does not disappoint, with a release by TURBOMEX; cumbia hip hop from mexico, this is quite varied within the cumbia genre, going from very traditional accordeons to more recent, more digital dub vibes. Special mention to the Orihuela MSS remix, adding some heavy sonidero beats.

We hope you enjoyed the selection as always! Have a great cumbialistic summer and let the guiros hit you hard! See you next month for some more cumbia bangers.

SEXXY SATURDAY CUMBIA – JUNE

sex sat cumbia Dar Al Naim 1Art by Dar Al Naim

As the clothes start coming off, the days getting longer, and the festival season slowly winding up, we are very happy to present a summery selection of freshly backed cumbia tracks!

COCONUTAH Selected:

Cholazo Sound System – Pawa EP

This is a nice release by Cholazo Sound system (we covered their debut a couple of editions ago), duo from the north of Chile. These are some sexy cumbias, with a mix of proper stompers and more relaxed, more ambiental beats. Check out Pachakuti for that deep Andean, Natural, hypnotic feeling, while Inti Taita is a real hip shaker with nice sampling and a heaaaavy bassline 🙂

CUMBIATON REMIX ! TOTY STYLEE – LA EVOLUCION DEL DJ!

DJ Toty Stylee is back with a tastefully put together electro cumbia that is sure to get the dancefloor vibing. Great use is made of sampling, starting with accordeon and progressing to some crazy vocal chops, while layers of trappy cumbia beats complete the tune.

Territorio Comanche ft Puloy- Cumbia Resistencia Remixes

A couple of editions ago, we covered the original by Territorio Comanche featuring Puloy; here are the remixes, out now on KONN recordings. The EP boasts versions by El Buga & Zambo (groovy tropical bass with an nice, soft cumbiaton touch), Andrés Digital (his usual high octane cumbiaton, this is a tune!), Pigmalião (sick psychedelic cumbia here, this will drive you crazy!), and, last but not least, Mr Toé (with a awesome electro-cumbia remix that induces deep trance!). Check it out!

TropiKhongo – Mueve Ese Culo (Tribilin Sound Refix)

This remix by Tribilin Sound will get most batties literally moving. The main vocal sample is nicely mangled and chopped, and accompanied by a very groovy cumbiaton rhythm. One for the dancefloor!

Tekila Mariachis – No tengo Dinero (Killmanjarto remix)

Tekilla-No Tengo Dinero Remix EP (por Pablo Borchi – Exclusivos Cassette)

Out on the 31st of May as another of the Amazing Cassete blog exclusives, Killmanjarto´s version of this great Balkanic cumbia has a very original feel, converting it into a more bass heavy, more electronic and more dubbed-out tune, all while retaining the ambience and guiros of the original. Be sure to check out the other, awesome non-cumbia versions by DJ Caution and Tangy bear 808.

Agrupación Illegal los Imparciales – Ni Chicha ni Limonada

http://nyctrust.bandcamp.com/album/ni-chicha-ni-limonada

This is a two hit wonder release by an amazing band from Buenos Aires, Argentina, featuring original chicha inspired, awe inspiring psychodelia on the first tune, ni chicha ni limonada. The second track, Cumbia con sabor, is a defty cumbia dub number with sprinkling of a trippy instruments including an awesome organ!

THE SILLY TANG Selected:

Emilsen Pacheco – El Ibuprofeno

This month is very special to me as it is the proper start of summer, good parties and amazing festivals. This time of the year often for us musicians, djs and music lovers is a real bubble but sometimes we come across some big hangovers! Well here is the cure J Big up to Sonidos Enraizados from Colombia and the master Emilsen Pacheco. Superb work of art on the music and the video clip.

ATODAMADRE – Monday Cumbia

What to say the man is an idol in his barrio! A mad man in the parties and a wicked producer when it comes to cumbia beats! Once again he comes through with a heavy twisted roller! I really love the drum work on ATodaMadre´s tunes you can really feel the Junglist still at it 😉

Dengue Dengue Dengue – The Enemy (Enchufada)

It is summer and it seems like Dengue Dengue Dengue have been very busy this winter. Very obscure but splendid track from the duo! This is like another taster for their album which is coming out in no time on the all mighty Enchufada label. Some like it, some don’t, I LOVE IT! Proper set bashing sounds!

Radio Rebajado Mayo 2016 / Invitado: La Selva (Madrid)

I think this is the third time I include a show from Radio Rebajado mix but, this time, surprise! We are so thankful to have been hosted on this cultural monthly show by the Monterrey Gang! Always such a vibe during these shows and personally I love the proper northern Mexican accent these guys have! Thanks again and here you have a few unreleased tunes from myself and the main man Coconutah without of course forgetting the zoom zoom zen Kaygee man dem.

AsagiSaundo – Una Marinera

What do we have here then! Here is a lovely summer time original cumbia called Una Marinera. I love this type of cumbia which is not trying too hard to be digital but keeps an original vintage sound to it. On this particular one I think the guitars sound really well put together. Big ups !

Carmelo Torres y Los Toscos – El Chacho

Now this! It has been ages since I really had to sit down and listen over and over to a tune before I could properly figure out what is going on and carry on loving it more and more. I call them growers! Carmelo Torres here delivers a traditional cumbia sounding a little like “Los Gaiteros” but the post recording production is sooooooo tight. You can hear lots of added effects and dubby elements to this which blends perfectly with the original Cumbia sound. Absolutely love this work and recommend everyone to grab one or ten copies.

Carmelo Torres y Los Toscos – La Negra Tulia (Galletas Bailables)

And talking off the master here he comes again with this title La Negra Tulia. On one of my favorite labels in the world “Galletas Calientes records” I also recommend you go run get yourself a copy of this original piece of history. Big up el señor Mathias and all the crew for their works.

Mina – Kabala (Enchufada)

To finish of this month´s selection from myself, I wanted to bring something original and out of this world. A very tropical orientated Ep out on Enchufada from an artist called Mina. Lovely production and a true underground Uk sound through both tunes. I personally really dig a lot the steel pan drums on Pineapples & Qumquat real Caribbean feeling for us to enjoy during this warm summer!

KAYGEE Selected :

Nicola Cruz – Cocha Runa (Chancha Via Circuito Remix) (ZZK Records)

What a great surprise when I found a link for this wonderful Remix album of Nicola Cruz’s ‘Prender el Alma’ in my mailbox. Thanks ZZK Records !!! With so many great artists involved in the project (History of Colour, Montoya, Umoja, Chancha Via Circuito , Captain Planet, Siete Catorce, ….and the list goes on), this was looking tasty; so if you still haven’t listened to it, get on it because it’s wonderful. All the remixes bring a new vibe to each tune, but I have to say that Chancha’s remix of ‘Cocha Runa’ just hits the spot; enjoy !

Grab your copy of the whole album on: http://zzkrecords.bandcamp.com/album/prender-el-alma-remixed

Eduardo Zambrano – RITUAL (album preview – Regional Label)

https://soundcloud.com/eduardozambranoinventor/ritual-eduardo-zambrano-new-album-full-preview-june2016

New sounds from Eduardo Zambrano (also known as Lascivio Bohemia in his other project) to be released on the great Chilean ‘Regional Label’ next week. The texture of his sounds are amazing, and really original; I really enjoy the kind of broken beats he uses; and these crunchy basslines are just lovely !!! I really look forward to hear the whole thing.

Señor Chancho – Danzajala (Cassette Blog)

Talking about Regional Label above, here’s one of their master minds’ latest EPs: Señor Chancho ‘Ensalada de Fruta’, released on Cassette Blog a week or so ago. The opening track, ‘Danzajala’ is a banger ! That potent synth and beat just hit the dancefloor, with more organic sounds coming in and out to create a great fruity atmosphere. I’m lovin’ that salad ! Make sure you check out the 3 other tracks of the EP, with one of them featuring our good friend DJ Nirso.

Derrok – Tribal (AKUMANDRA)

So I hadn’t heard anything from Derrok in a few months, and recently had the pleasure of seeing new tunes & mixes pop up everywhere ! Here he is with a brand new EP: ‘Tribal’. It’s exactly what it says on the box: proper tribal business ! Slow building atmospheres, creating mystical environments in which the chants and the instruments he uses bring you to close your eyes and travel. I’m a big fan of these long tunes, which have time to develop slowly but surely, and catch you on the way. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the journey !

John Montoya – Cumbia De Piedra (Derrok Remix)

I told you Derrok was everywhere at the moment ! And it’s great to see. Here’s a wicked remix he did of John Montoya’s big big tune ‘Cumbia de Piedra’. He kept the whole vibe of the tune, and nicely added his own ‘housey’ touch and drums to it, enhacing the progression of the journey ! Sounds wicked !

SidiRum & Barda – Los Sueños (Frente Bolivarista)

I had read somewhere that Barda was preparing something sweeeet with SidiRum a few weeks back, and here it is, another wicked joint EP: ‘Los Sueños’, released on Frente Bolivarista. I personally love both of these producers, and really enjoy hearing their sounds meet into projects like this one. Here’s their description of the the album: “ ‘Los Sueños’ presents at first an experimental narrative and slowly you feel the residual spaces being heated by the rhythms until the climax where the listener is invited to a more primitive and tribal electronic.” You can enjoy both Pt 1 & Pt 2 which are beautiful, and 3 other added delights with remixes by Dandara, Barrio Lindo & Pigmalião.

And while we’re talking about these guys, make sure you check out this new compilation which includes great tunes, amongst others, by SidiRum and Barrio Lindo (with a Don Plok bonus track at the end)

VAMOS! Sonidos Vol.1 “Hybrid Dimensions”: http://vamosfestival.bandcamp.com/album/vamos-sonidos-vol-1-hybrid-dimensions-compiled-by-selectorchico

Mr Pauer ft. Tumbao – Pronto Vamo’a Llegá (Bosq Remix) (Fabrika Music)

Here’s another one who I hadn’t heard anything from in a while, and he’s back on the Latin tip ! It’s great. Bosq adds a really groovy & funky touch to the original tune. Love it !

And now for all the people here who enjoy a good mixtape, here are several amazing ones which came out over the past month:

Quantic – 80 years of Anibal: Stop that Acordeon, the celluloid is burning!

“This is a short mix dedicated to Maestro Anibal Velásquez”, full of classics for you to dance on a nice sunny afternoon !

Shika Shika: Flavour of the Month: Mayo (Jhon Montoya)

Shika Shika always deliver great mixtapes, and this month it came straight from Colombia, at the hands of John Montoya, with an absolutely wonderful journey and a superb selection of tunes.

Nguzunguzu Drop Perfect Lullaby Vol. 3 & Buy Perfect Lullaby Edits

NZU

Nguzunguzu are massive and have been one of the most respected production teams in Dance Underground circles for some years but mainstream success has thus far inexplicably eluded them. I’m quite sure it won’t stay that way for too long. I certainly hope so anyway.

Their new Perfect Lullaby Mixtape, Volume 3 dropped a few days ago. Slept on it as I’ve been too consumed with trying to overcome the demise of my beloved Purple One. I rarely ever get emotional about these things in public but this one is really unavoidable and I can’t help it.

Anyway, the Perfect Lullaby is the best Mixtape series of the past 5 years, it’s simply GENIUS. They kicked off with the first volume in 2011, at least a few years before the Zouk, Tarraxo, Kizomba interest had hit the dance underground and so they were way, way ahead with that.

Volume 2 dropped in 2014 and now 2 years later we have Volume 3. It fills me with great pride to see many artists on this mixtape who we have either featured/been introduced on the Generation Bass blog and also released on our digi label. Artists like, Dj Paparazzi, Nindja, Willy G, Dj Express and Dj Bebedera.

The new mixtape follows the trend of the past 2, gorgeous, glorious and gigantic mind-blowing and beautiful Tarraxinha, Zouk & Kizomba tracks and edits fused with American RnB. Many of the edits are by the production duo and it’s always a delight to hear Asma’s voice in these recordings, she has such a humourous twang to it.

This is the mixtape of the year, beautifully put together and absolutely ESSENTIAL listening.

Dj Doraemon – Apocalypse EP [FREE]

Dj Doraemon-t500x500

This artist from Portugal first caught our attention way back in about 2013 when he was about 15 years of age. His productions range from Tarraxo, Afro Beat and Kuduro through to Kizomba.

For this EP we’ve chosen some of his most brutal of tracks in a dark dystopian apocalyptic vein.

When we first heard these tracks, they just blew our minds with their immense power and unique sound. The tracks exhibit a raw, unpolished demo-like quality which we would not change for the world. They also demonstrate a maturity way beyond the 15 years of age of the producer when he made some of these tracks.

The brutal beauty of these tracks is further mythologized by the fact that pre-masters or wavs just don’t exist anymore as Dj Doraemon’s computer crashed and he also did not back up any of his stuff.

So we are left with just the unmastered MP3’s in 160kbps! You must think we’re mad but this fact didn’t deter us from releasing this EP because this is essential music that needs to be heard and which we must have on our label regardless of quality and bit rate. It also ties in with the way in which a lot of underground artists of African heritage actually drop their tracks without giving a f**k as to bit rate. Now that might mean an epic fail on a great sound system but paradoxically this is the real deal in many ways!

Over the 5 tracks Dj Doraemon creates distorted polyrhythmic beats interspersed with gun shots, sirens, bells that toll for thee, animated voices, crash cymbals, screams, groans and static interference. There’s a naiveté and doom laden atmospherics to create bleak yet enthralling imagery.

3 of the tracks belong to the Tarraxo genre whilst the latter 3 to Kuduro. This is a name to watch out for in the future but we couldn’t wait and so here he is in all of his rawness!

BIO:
Dj Doraemon aka Ivan Lima is from Cova Da Moura, Lisboa, Portugal. He is now 18 years of age but started producing at the age of 10 after he saw a friend working in FL Studio 4. He feels he has developed his own style and vibe but also acknowledges that he so much more to learn.

FREE DOWNLOAD : CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE – NEVER MIND THE BÖREKS EP

Never-mind-the-børeks

Norwegian artist Center of the Universe aka Jørgen Skjulstads has been on the Generation Bass radar for a few years now. Center of the Universe does a unique brand of quirky electronica that takes in all manner of things. His releases contain traditional songs remade alongside original compositions inspired by archaic entertainment consoles and pre-iPhone computer culture ranging from Azeri Skip, Post-Reggaeton, BalkanBit, Oriental Dub, Arabic Skweee, Balkan Skweee through to Post-Rembetika amongst many other things.

For Generation Bass he has dropped this free Arabic Skweee/Oriental Dub/Greek/Turkish EP which he calls “Never mind the böreks”. This EP consists of 4 tracks.

Following our short preface, C.O.U. tells us about the tracks in his own words:

1. Sigara Böreği

This track has a very Kraftwerk vibe about it in terms of tempo and melody.

“This started out as a remix for Oslo avant-rockers Moon Relay. First I sang upon their guitars and added a lot of instruments for their remix. Then I wanted to do a break-dance-version of that remix and in the process everything except some ring modulated synths and the beat was gone out in favour of some more oriental vibes. The track is heavily inspired by Swedish Skweee-pioneer and Dj Daniel Savio.”

2. Black Feta

This is an epic track and we love the way that it builds up to that nastier wobble section. It’s got an air of Oum Kalthoum about it, that epic, lengthy, big Egyptian sound.

“A few years ago I made a bootleg of the Bendaly family “Do you love me?” I wanted to do a similar track but without sampling someone. For this I recorded some oud, some synths and a cimbalon and tried to edit them into an oriental dub-mix.”

3. Songs of Today

At first, we thought this was a Balkan track, Serbian or Bosnian, surprised when we found it was Greek. It’s got a Trap vibe about it and is a great opener for a DJ set. Sounds like a contemporary urban version of a track from a good time musical soundtrack.

“This song started with a sample from a Greek old record bought at a flea-marked. There are only Greek letters on it except of the title “Songs of today” I got a Greek friend to translate the words and it is a nice love song.

Chorus goes like: (get out my delalis* and agas** in
sejiani***) * Turkish word for the man that used to shout the news on the streets ** Turkish word for the prince *** serjiani = relaxing by looking at the horizon without doing anything.

Pretty lyrical innit!”

4. The Power of Börek

This reminds us 50 Cent. A very melodic track with an awesome DnB section.

“This song is named after a home-made semi-modular synth called the Börek energy, which provides the bass-line for the track. It is homage to US producer Lazercrotch that made a lot of nice music a bit similar to this”.

5. Sigara Böreği (Streamer’s Late Night Take-Away Remix)

A bonus remix by our friend Streamer (“Walking with Camels” EP on GB) takes C.O.U. into 90’s Madchester territory with a bumpy, groovy ‘twistin’ my melons man’ mood!

BIO:

Inspired by folk music and rhythmic excesses from all over the world the Center of the Universe made his first recordings in 2000. The group, which admittedly is not a band, but rather Jørgen Skjulstads (Now we’ve got members, Salvatore) solo project, combines heavy bass, odd meters and various exotic elements with a lo-fi approach in his recording methods.

Center of the Universe has been active in the Norwegian underground music scene since 1998 and has in addition to participating in several other projects, found the time to release a whole host of solo albums, including a trilogy where the theme was space and time. It is difficult to give a clear definition of the band’s musical impression, as this tends to change from release to release, but it would not be wrong to say that melody is always at the center. What apparently may begin as a pop song entices you into a world where nothing is as it seems and musical expectations are seldom met. For the Center of the Universe no surna is too high and no bass too deep. He has always walked off the beaten path next to the road less travelled and keeps trudging on in a landscape where the sun shines, vulcanoes erupt and it’s raining guitars, sitars and just plain’ol tars.
